I understand the full concept of "welding" in a plastic filler piece, smooth the weld, filler and sanding it all even... but what do you guys do with the paint? Do
Offline you completely sand down to bare plastic? Or do you use some kind of plastic friendly solvent that eats the paint away? It's easy to sand away the paint
around the side markers I want to shave, but the entire bumper will need to be stripped for a respray right?

It's easy to sand away the paint around the side markers I want to shave, but the entire bumper will need to be stripped for a respray right?

and you dont want to weld either you want to use either a FUSOR or 3M product that is for plastic pieces and then glazing to smooth it into the rest of the

Why can't I weld... if you weld behind the bumper and use that PolyFlex or some other kind of glaze to fill it in the front, why not just save my money and
use a soldering gun.

And what should I use to strip the bumper completely... might as well do it... will cut cost down at the body shop.

8-6-2004 w/e dude if you welded plastic be4 and like to do it and are good at it have at it... but easier and faster to do it my way.... and you dont strip the bumper
1355 posts down either... you apply a plastic adhesion promoter to the part you filled then spray primer on that part then wetsand down the whole bumper with 600
and apply a quality sealer

if you look on my thread u see i said prime that area... then scroll to the bottom my bumper is sprayed with sealer

you will wanna block it with eithe 120 or 80 but 80 might be to coarse then final sand it with 180 maybe even 220. then you will want to use plastic filler for

sand down the area round where your patches are going. bring it down to the raw plastic, then do your plastic welds/fusor whatever you chose. There is no

if u plastic weld you dont really need to sand anythign down. as u melt all the plastic the paint is goign with it

4764 posts call me silly, but wouldnt that be like trying to weld metal without removing paint? paint inside any kind of weld wouldnt be good, would lead to failure.
better safe than sorry and it also makes for easier featheredging during bodywork.

i got a question now that the topic is at hand. not to hijack either

when your plastic weilding, is it best to do it from the back? or both the frotn and back of the bumper? like for example, plastic weilding one side only. or do
you have to do both.

This is my first attempt at a picture post, hope it works,

I plastic welded these mk2 indicator holes in to my mk1 clipper bumper using a welder normally used for seam welding vinyl flooring, i used strips of plastic
cut from a spare bumper as filler rod, the results are very smooth welds which require very little filler, this was my first attempt and came out very well,

As for paint removal if you run the welder over the paint it comes off in seconds,

The welders aren't cheap to buy, but you could all ways hire one , i borrowed mine from a friend who lays floors,
