Show: Society meeting is to be held Wednesday 12 October 7:30pm at the Canowindra Bowling Club. All members are welcome to attend and provide feedback and suggestions for next years Show. Club: work will be commencing on the RSL Club this week. First to be actioned will be the auditorium so that it will be ready for the Zone Judging of the Western Region Showgirls of the Agricultural Society of NSW in February 2012. The company that has been awarded the contract for the rebuild and repairs has accepted tenders from local tradespeople over the last few months. Snakes: there have been a number of sightings of some very healthy large brown snakes already this season. As it is also the best time to be in the garden, make sure you wear long pants and boots, and look where youre poking around with your hands! Gardening: mulch mulch mulch! Take advantage of the moisture in the ground after the recent rain. Tip: water your pot plants with your used dishwater, or put it into a spray bottle to spray your roses to deter aphids. The detergent fixes repellent soil (when the water beads on top & doesnt soak in). Just make sure if any worms come up to the surface of the soil, wash them off in clean water and place them elsewhere. Pool: opening this Monday from 2-6pm until November, then business as usual from the beginning of November 10am to 6pm. CONGRATULATIONS: Christina & David on one of the most unique weddings ever, but also the most honest and loving. Best wishes for your future happiness. Even though the weather didnt dampen the enthusiasm of the bridal party or guests, the ceremony and reception held at the Falls was a celebration of love and great friendship.

CANOWINDRA SHOW REPORT We couldnt have planned for better weather for this years Show. Perfect Spring days ensured a huge crowd gathered at the Showground for the 110th Show. A huge thanks goes to Robyn Henry and her mum Madeline who gave so much of their time, and at the last minute, to take the many entries in the office in the two weeks prior to the Show. Thank you also to Tony, Trish and Vicki Davis who once again allowed us to take over the foyer of their reception area to display all the trophies so generously given, and take the entries for the exhibits. The Cobley Pavilion was filled with colour and talent, and the new trophy cabinet looked great. Its looking like the photography section may have to be housed by itself in a few years. The Ladies Auxiliary did a fantastic job of organising and displaying the various entries. In a hotly contested and quite contentious judging of Cut Flowers, Margaret Hamilton took out Champion Bloom with her fine specimen of a daffodil. Moyne was the Most Successful Exhibitor, and also took home the Isabel Russell Trophy for best iris. Tom Cobley was awarded the Ivy Dunkley Champion Camellia Trophy. And in what was nearly a two horse race, Peggy Nash won the photo finish as Most Successful Exhibitor for Decorative Flowers, with Moyne awarded the Kit Craven Memorial Trophy for Best Floral Arrangement. The ASC Special Rich Fruit Cake local competition was won by Jean Goodacre who won the right to go straight into the Regional Level competition, as Canowindra is the last Show in our regional zone. Unfortunately Jean missed out, however went home with the $50 prize for Champion Cake donated by Jack & David Rice, and Most Successful Exhibitor honours. The popular Mens Chocolate Cake was won by Darren Howard. Tara Jenkins and Brooke Tattersall battled it out in the Under 16 years section, with Tara taking home the Champion Cake honours with her Decorated Plain Cake. The Homemades Section would not be fully reported without mentioning Joanna Balcombe, who should have won the Most Patient Exhibitor as she waited for her missing chocolate cake to be found. Fortunately it won first prize for that class, so it was worth the wait. Steve Flannery won both Preserves crowns with Most Successful Exhibitor Overall and Champion Exhibit. Jean Goodacre was awarded the trophy for Most Successful in Classes 25-31. Needlework had a good showing with Daphne Quigg awarded Most Successful Exhibitor in the District section as well overall. Janet Robson won with her Champion Piece of Needlework, and Best Article in Wool Trophy, donated by Ros Finn was won by Merle Parrish. Narelle Hughes won Most Outstanding Piece of Craft Work of $25 and a ribbon, and Samuel Durkin won the Most Outstanding Junior Craft. Peter McNamara won the ribbon for Most Outstanding Junior Secondary Craft Work. Jean Goodacre took out the Clarrie Craven Memorial Trophy for Garden Produce, and Gwen Jolliffe won the Mrs RHE Brown Memorial Trophy with her citrus after a tie with Joanna Balcombe saw her name drawn out of a hat. In Fine Arts Stella Henry won both Best Local Entry and Most Successful Exhibitor, and Chrystal Golding took out Best Open Entry and Overall Winner. Xavier Lynch won the Best 3D exhibit. The Photography exhibition was brilliant again with Grant Cummings winning the Virginia Cullane prize for Best Digital and Overall Champion Photograph, and Beth Bowd was Most Successful Exhibitor. The Federation Fotos trophy and ribbon for Best Film Photograph was won by Robyn Thomson Greg Hamilton was the winner in Prime Sheep on the day being awarded both Woodlock trophies for Most Successful Exhibitor and Champion Pen of Lambs, Allan Gray & Co Trophy, K B Ryan Memorial Trophy, Max Glasson Memorial Trophy, John Payten Memorial Trophy. Stuart Gavin took out the Minoru Pastoral sponsored Open shorn lamb pen of 2 class. Alfalfa won the Pearce Memorial Prize. Stud Beef Cattle Supreme Animal of Show was won by Waugoola Pastoral Donk which also took out Supreme Champion Male, with Melton Park Gillian III awarded Supreme Champion Female. The Dairy Goat section Grand Champion Dairy Doe was won by Avago Zsa Zsa by G & J Cassell; Champion Buck: Illoura Park Jonty by J Jones; and Best Exhibit: Avago Zsa Zsa by G & J Cassell. Junior Art and other exhibit and event results will be included in next weeks issue of The Phoenix.

TROY GRANT - MATTERS OF STATE COUNTRY P ATIENTS TO B ENEFIT Its tragic to think that some country people are declining medical treatment because of the long distances of travel involved. That's why I have welcomed the NSW Governments $28m boost to the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS), which will enable country patients who travel long distances for medical treatment to receive 30% more in their accommodation subsidies. This the first time the accommodation subsidy has gone up in 11 years. Country patients can also receive a 25% boost in petrol subsidies. The funding boost demonstrates the NSW Governments commitment to ensuring that the people of regional NSW have access to timely and quality health care regardless of where they live. For the first time since 2006, there will be an increase in the rates for travel and accommodation assistance for people needing to travel at least 100 kilometres one way for specialist medical treatment. Accommodation subsidies increase by 30%, to $43 per single person and $60 per double, up from $33 per single and $46 per double. Reimbursement for car travel will now be at 19 cents per kilometre, up from 15 cents. It will also be easier for patients to stay with family and friends when receiving specialist medical treatment, with a subsidy of $140 per week, up from $30 per week. The new arrangements, which come into effect on 1 January next year, will also allow any patient travelling at least 200 kilometres in one week to claim IPTAAS subsidies. Previously, only patients travelling to access renal dialysis services were eligible to claim under this rule. There will also be a change to the current $40 administration fee charged for processing claims made by patients who are not pensioners or health care card holders. From 1 January, once a patients IPTAAS subsidies reach $1,000 within a year, the $40 administration fee will be waived. GO PLAY DURING S CHOOL H OLIDAYS It's school holiday time and I encourage parents and children to take advantage of a free NSW Government resource to help plan SWING INTO CANOWINDRA One of Canowindras graces is that it moves to its own rhythm. Businesses, and owners, come and go and things have remained pretty much the same. Now, when you walk down the street there is colour and vibrancy, more businesses are opening for the whole weekend, rather than tumbleweeds rolling silently by after the IGA closed on Saturday until opening again Monday morning. On the weekend Swinging Bridge opened their cellar door in the restored Finns Building, in the section closest to Charlies Holden Museum; and Melissa Barber has her gallery on the other side, closest to the laneway. Finns itself has been operating now for 12 months, and the three businesses under one roof complement each other perfectly. The lounge and outdoor seating are perfect areas to catch up with friends for a coffee.

fun and educational activities in Sydney and regional NSW. The Go Play website lists more than 350 possible activities catering for all ages and a range of different interests, with many activities listed being free for families. Seventeen different NSW Government agencies have contributed to the Go Play site and more than 50 000 people have already visited the page, with an additional 2000 people downloading the iPhone app. This is a great, user friendly tool for local families and I encourage people to visit the site or download the app and participate in the range of arts, cultural, sporting and recreational activities that this state has to offer. The Go Play site is: www.goplay.nsw.gov.au SOPRTS V OLUNTEERS RECOGNISED Sport at grassroots level is very reliant on volunteers the mums, dads, former players and other community members play vital but unpaid roles such as coach, official and club committee member. These people who give freely of their time, skills and passion will be recognised for the first time with a dedicated annual sports awards program. The Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley has launched the inaugural NSW Sports Volunteer Awards which will recognise the efforts of individuals, as well as acknowledging excellence in volunteer management by sporting clubs and associations. I have had the privilege of meeting many volunteers and I understand how vital volunteers are to local sporting activities in my electorate. Award programs play an important role in recognising volunteers, and also highlighting the invaluable work of volunteers across the community. The NSW Government is currently developing a Volunteering Strategy for NSW and I look forward to working closely with the sports sector on promoting volunteering and supporting volunteers. Almost a third of all volunteers in NSW volunteer in the sports sector. I urge all local sporting organisations in my electorate to nominate worthy volunteers at www.sportnsw.com.au The restaurant in the Royal Hotel is reinventing itself once again, this time with Dan Lambert, previously of the Old Vic Inn and Canowindra Hotel, who is serious about creating exciting cuisine and forging his mark in our town. pomegranate, chosen because of what locals call him, and a fruit originating from Persia, a style of cooking about which Dan is passionate. Teapots & Tiaras made a massive move to Gaskill Street from The Green Shed, giving space for Dot Cain to express her creative flair for the eccentric with How Bazaar & Cafe on Tilga Street. There is the new cafe Deburgabar which even though it hasnt opened yet, the cleaning of the long empty shop, and colourful signage on the front has already helped make our street brighter. A real estate office will be taking over Leannes Flowers old premises in the near future, and Comprinting and The Phoenix office will be moving to the old Canowindra Star building on Ryall Street behind the Junction Hotel, once council approval and work has been carried out to restore some of its original dignity and features. With more people visiting our town, it would benefit businesses to stay open a little longer on weekends to extend the Canowindra shopping experience.
