Daniel Ball, AIA, NCARB


Mr. Ball, Founder and President of dba, Architects & Planners, pursued his undergraduate studies in Architecture and graduate studies in Urban Design at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. For twelve years, he worked in federal community development programs, including planning and nancing of housing, community facilities, energy conservation programs and alternative energy production. After government service, he served as Senior Architectural Manager for several national homebuilders. He was responsible for designing single family, townhouse and multi-family structures in seventeen states. Mr. Ball represented the National Association of Homebuilders at National Code Hearings for several years, testifying on behalf of homebuilder positions on critical issues. In 1994, he founded Daniel Ball and Associates, Inc, providing design and construction administration services. The rm produced designs for many building types, receiving awards for numerous projects. Mr. Ball is a member of the AIA, a NCARB certicate holder and registered in eleven states.

Patricia Brown, Assoc. AIA


Patricia Brown, Vice President of dba, Architects & Planners brings a diverse educational background including Interior Design, Architecture and Business Management studies. Her career reects the diversity of her educational background and includes various venues including retail, hospitality, health care, government housing, mixed use and residential. Patricia Brown has held positions from Owners Representative, Project Manager, Estimator, Senior Designer and currently as Vice President.

PROJECT EASTPORT LANDING


LOCATION Eastport, Maryland STATUS Unbuilt This proposed project incorporates progressive green roof technology into the historic setting of Eastport, Maryland. Residential units range from one-bedroom to two-master suite units, with up to approximately 2,000 SF of living space. Many units feature panoramic water views of nearby creeks and marinas, as well as the sky line of Historic Annapolis.

STATUS Proposal This proposed inll project reuses a former school site in a targeted redevelopment area outside of Washington DC. The target market for the complex is the young urban professional. Traditional Washington DC architecture guides the design for this proposed mixed-use development. The residential building provides 140 units, with an additional 44 condos located in the mixed-use building. Approximately 30,000 SF of commercial space makes up the remainder of the mixed-use building. Surface and structured parking is provided for both residential and commercial uses.

dba provided interior architectural services for a marine insurance agency, located in a mixed-use building. The design invokes a nautical feeling through the use of a barrel vault over the centralized le and circulation area to mimic the hull of a ship. The concept is reinforced by the selection of xtures and appropriate nishes.

PROJECT CROWNSVILLE TOWN CENTER


LOCATION Crownsville, Maryland STATUS Complete Crownsville Town Center is a 21,200 SF three story retail and ofce building in a rapidly developing suburban neighborhood. Located on a difcult site due to shape and numerous regulatory constraints, the building provides the owners with maximum allowable building size. Retail spaces face the existing main thoroughfare, while still providing layouts for maximum exibility in leasing. The two upper oors are for use as ofce spaces. The structural layout and mechanical systems allow unlimited exibility when dividing the space for multiple tenants.

STATUS Complete The newly remodeled restaurant was renovated into an upscale dining facility which was named New Restaurant of the Year by the Washington Times. The interior was designed to facilitate 270 seats and a new bar area. The open kitchen and private dining areas are some of the elements that maintain the charm of this structure. Currently, a rooftop dining addition is being planned. The project encompassed major renovations to a structure which is a combination of ve different buildings, some portions dating over 100 years old.

PROJECT FIBERLAM OFFICES


LOCATION Richmond, Virginia STATUS Complete This ofce building was designed as the clients main headquarters for their manufacturing and distribution operations. The exterior was designed with a dynamic entryway as the main focal point of the complex. Interior spaces provide ample room for management and staff with meeting and training facilities.

Whether your project requires architectural analysis -- existing conditions reports, brochure level conceptual design, and code or zoning analysis -- or a custom built, interactive nancial model, we have the professional expertise in-house to help you make decisions. dba was engaged early to assist in determining the feasibility of an adaptive reuse of this former volunteer re station. The scope of our services included existing conditions documentation, code and zoning analysis, nancial analysis, programming, and conceptual design. Also, an environmental consultant was engaged to perform a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA).

Over the course of the project, several building programs and phasing scenarios were developed and tested. Each scenario was nancially veried by our model, built specically for the project. Ultimately, one building program proved to be the most nancially feasible and was in compliance with the Clients needs. The Client chose to move forward with the program; a program that was signicantly different than the original concept.

STATUS Complete The nal phase of a 29 year Master Building Plan consisted of a 9,500 SF addition with renovations to the existing church facility located on a 3.3 acre waterfront site. The new addition expanded the existing educational space, and made the building handicapped accessible. Extensive renovations were completed to the administrative spaces and support areas. With the completion of the master building plan, the entire complex is now 41,500 SF, able to support a congregation of 2,200 people, as well as their successful Pre-School, and many other ministries.

PROJECT FIRST CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY


LOCATION Annapolis, Maryland STATUS In Progress A master building plan for a vibrant and expanding independent church outside Annapolis. Their ambitious plan will be built in four phases. The ultimate plan will require ve acres be acquired, in addition to their present 5.5 acre site. Phase I, completed in 2000, consists of a 750 seat sanctuary, 110 seat choir, 10 seat orchestra pit, administrative space, several meeting rooms, state of the art multimedia and recording studios in a 17,000 SF building. The next several phases will be dedicated to the development of a Christian education program, and a family life center. The entire complex will total 42,000 SF.

PROJECT MOUNT ZION UNITED METHODIST


LOCATION Eastport, Maryland STATUS Complete Restricted by the surrounding neighborhood, this unique 0.136 acre urban site necessitated a two story design solution. The design relates back to the existing streetscape fabric. Programmatic features include a 250 seat sanctuary, fellowship hall, classrooms and administrative ofces. Phase I construction is complete and consists of 8,250 SF. Phase II will complete the master plan, and requires the acquisition of adjacent properties.

PROJECT HEMINGWAY MEMORIAL


LOCATION Chapel Oaks, Maryland STATUS Unbuilt This 80,000 SF structure on 12.85 acres is for a multi-level church outside of Washington DC. A 1,550 seat sanctuary is the main focal point of the plan, which includes a 220 seat choir, 20 piece orchestra pit, audio visual studio and gathering center. The Recreational Ministries, Music Ministries, Christian Education Center, and an 800 seat dining room will be included in this large multipurpose facility.

STATUS Complete The sensitive restoration of this late 19th Century French Second Empire Revival won the prestigious Historic Preservation Award from Historic Annapolis Foundation. The award recognized the adaptive re-use of existing building materials, major restoration of most of the existing fabric of the house and updating of the major systems.

PROJECT_ KENT ISLAND STATION


LOCATION Stevensville, Maryland STATUS Under Construction Following a several month long Feasibility Study, dba was awarded the design contract for a renovation and adaptive reuse of the former Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department. The project scope included both interior and exterior improvements to the structure, originally built in 1948. The projects prominent location on Main Street in the historic town of Stevensville required maintaining the character of the rehouse while updating the building envelope and creating visual interest. Windows were added to the second oor to allow more natural light to enter the space and garage bay doors were replaced with an insulated glass storefront. Large canopies were added to reduce solar heat gain during the summer months and to add protection from foul weather when entering the building In addition to shell and base building improvements, the project included the buildout of rst and second oor tenant suites. This included building system upgrades, revisions and upgrades to the means of egress, and the creation of reception areas, ofces, and conference rooms.

Located in a transitional area of residential and commercial structures, this project contains the rst green roof constructed in Annapolis. This green roof reduces stormwater runoff, while providing additional pervious area to the site. The structure includes six residential units, commercial space and enclosed parking.

PROJECT CAMDEN CROSSING


LOCATION Baltimore, Maryland STATUS Under Construction

Built on a former industrial site, this project faced stringent design guidelines due to the remediation measures. Classic exteriors, coupled with modern interiors attract the target market of urban professionals. The Neo-Traditional site plan provides alley loaded garages, along with common park spaces. This project has been a catalyst for revitalizing the neighborhood.

STATUS Complete Designed for a large community near a metro station in Maryland, the client outlined a building program that would provide for the diverse needs of the occupants. Major features include a community room, business center, tness center, internet cafe, kitchen, summer lounge, and large terrace.

PROJECT PATRIOTS GLEN CLUBHOUSE


LOCATION Elkton, Maryland STATUS Complete dba designed this clubhouse and community center for a planned residential community with a golf course. The main exterior focal point is the dynamic entryway. Interior spaces provide for a spacious community room adjacent to the kitchen, along with a bar area accessible from the deck. The large deck has a covered area, accommodating patrons for various functions, with an expansive view towards the golf course.

STATUS Complete Designed on a challenging site, this 6,200 SF two-story clubhouse required that the pool and exercise facilities be located on the main level. The more formal rooms are located on the top oor. With its coffered ceiling and large expanse of glass, the community room offers space for large gatherings that can take full advantage of direct access to the spacious rear terrace.

PROJECT SNOWDEN CLUBHOUSE


LOCATION Columbia, MD STATUS Complete The concept for this 12,000 SF clubhouse was to create a beautiful facility for an Active Adult Community in Howard County, Maryland that would evoke memories of European architecture from travels for the sophisticated buyer within the community. The exterior was designed to complement the European inspired architecture of the adjacent villas within the same community and harmonize with the natural surrounding of its wooded hillside location. The exterior deck is positioned off the large community room, overlooking the beautifully landscaped pool and across the community and surrounding woods. Amenities include a banquet room, media room, tness center, ofce, summer lounge and kitchen.

STATUS Complete Occupying a full block in the newly developed Cameron Station Community in Alexandria, Virginia, this luxury condominium project includes 148 units and two levels of secure parking for residents and guests. The four-story building features traditional brick detailing and standing seam metal roofs. Available features include nine and twelve foot ceilings, lofts, balconies and access to a central landscaped courtyard. Other amenities include a fully equipped exercise room, a business center with conference space, two formal lobbies and concierge services.

PROJECT TOWNHOUSES
LOCATION Odenton, Maryland STATUS Unbuilt This high-density upscale rental community combines multi-level townhouses and ats arranged within buildings to create a neotraditional community with a sophisticated urban feel. Most units have garages served by rear alleys, and have interior rear stairs providing access from garages to units. All buildings front on extensive green spaces that further unify the community and encourage recreational activities. A centrally located clubhouse contains the rental ofce, clubhouse facilities and pool.

STATUS Complete The Lakeside Condominium building is fourstories of luxury condos built over a two-story parking garage. It is part of a redevelopment of the Town Center and is built on the former site of a movie theater. A 4-story wood structure was combined with a concrete parking garage and designed to t in the urban setting. The complex satised the stringent rules and requirements of the local community. There are 48 units and the fourth oor units have lofts and roof top terraces that overlook a nearby lake.

PROJECT MAXWELL PLACE


LOCATION Frederick, Maryland STATUS Complete Located on Carroll Creek, in the Historic District of Frederick, MD, Maxwell Place contains 68 condominium units and parking for 196 cars. The building, designed to be compatible within its historic setting, draws on the many architectural cues of its civil war-era neighbors. Units range from one-bedroom to two-master suite units up to 2,000 SF in area. Many units include unobstructed views of Carroll Creek and the Historic District of Frederick.

STATUS Complete The design concept for the Villas was inspired by the hillside villas scattered across the Tuscan landscape. Extensive use of earthy stone colors contrasted with the soft color palette of the siding, shutter and trim further enhance the European inspired architecture.

Features include long front balconies, glass enclosed towers and welcoming porches. Interiors of the Villas offer open and light lled spaces with expanses of glass that capture the views of the wooded property. The villas range from 2,700 to 3,600 SF.

LOCATION Frederick, Maryland STATUS Complete This design is traditional in exterior appearance while the interiors were designed to offer the buyer many of the features sought after in todays market, such as optional room extensions, libraries, sitting rooms off the master bedroom, upgraded master baths with soaking tubs and optional nished lower levels. Full basement, English basement, garage and full out of grade elevations provide the builder the ability to site the townhouses in many diverse communities.

STATUS Complete This award winning home was developed for a builder of executive level homes in upscale communities. It offers an open oor plan, 4-5 bedrooms, sunroom, 3-car garage as well as many other options. The large 2-story foyer and luxurious main stairway accent the entry. A second stairway connects all three oors. Three elevations, some with brick or stone, are available on this home.

LOCATION Pennsylvania DATE Unbuilt The design parameters were to create a Neo-Traditional product line for a builder who needed to completely update their portfolio with single family homes that have a contemporary focus. This new product emphasized timeless design that drew inspiration from regional architectural style and utilizes local materials. The house types range in size from 2,000 to 2,800 SF and offer such features as open oor plans, full wrap around porches, integral garages, and well thought out oor plans for todays lifestyles.

PROJECT PRIVATE HOUSE


LOCATION Highland, Maryland STATUS Complete This home was designed for an active family in a community of executive homes. The French country design was developed using a combination of stone, brick and low maintenance ber cement siding with decorative elements that complement the architectural style. Most living areas relate to the rear yard area, which abuts pastures of an Equestrian center. Careful detailing of porches and other architectural details maintains the integrity of the design.
