In light of the perceived resurgence of heinous crimes in the Philippines, Vice President Jejomar Binay called for the reimposition of death penalty to give Filipinos a "discipline". The capital punishment in the country was abolished on June 24, 2006 by former PresidentGloria Macapagal-Arroyo

January 2 Seven people are killed in a bus-jeepney collision in Ibaan, Batangas.[1] January 5 Heavy rains spawn flash floods and landslides that leave at least 10 people dead in several regions in Mindanao.[2][3] January 8 Five people are killed in a gunfight between government troops and suspected rebels in Compostela Valley.[4] January 9 Over a million devotees join the feast and grand procession of the Black Nazarene.[5] The event leaves hundreds of people injured.[6] January 16 President Benigno Aquino III appoints Sixto Brillantes as the new chairman of the Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec), replacingJose Melo.[7] January 18 The Supreme Court (SC) denies Lauro Vizconde's appeal for reconsideration of its decision acquitting Hubert Webb and six other co-accused in the Vizconde massacre case.[8] January 19 Vice President Jejomar Binay joins calls for the re-imposition of death penalty in the country, in light of the perceived resurgence of heinous crimes.[9] January 21 Three people are killed and fifteen others are critically injured in a truck-jeepney collision in Tablon, Cagayan de Oro.[10] January 22 Raymond Dominguez, suspected leader of a notorious carnapping syndicate, surrenders to police in Malolos City, Bulacan, after being tagged as the mastermind in three gruesome murders. The Dominguez brothers, Raymond and Roger, are allegedly involved in the killings of car dealers Venson Evangelista, Emerson Lozano, and the latters driver, Ernani Sencil.[11][12]

The countrys first successful liver transplant is performed on a child, three-year-old Catherine Erica Buenaventura.[14] A 17-year-old student of the University of the Philippines, Danica Flores Magpantay, is named the 2011 Ford Models Supermodel of the World.[15]

January 25 A bus explosion in Makati City kills at least four people and wounds at least 18 others.[16] January 27

A site accident kills at least 10 construction workers in Makati City. The workers were killed when an electric gondola they were using while constructing the 39-story Eton Greenbelt Residences along Gallardo Street collapsed.[17][18] During a hearing at the Senate, former military budget officer Lt. Col George Rabusa bares a "pabaon" (send-off) system in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and reveals how AFP chiefs allegedly raked in millions in illegal wealth. According to Rabusa, then outgoing AFP Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes allegedly received not less than P50 million as pabaon when he retired in 2001.[19][20]

At least six people are killed in a delivery van-jeepney collision in Davao City.[21][22]

January 28 President Benigno Aquino III puts up a P1-million reward for information leading to the arrest of the people behind the January 25 bombing of a passenger bus.[23] January 29 A fire in Navotas City kills twelve people. About 100 houses were burned while 130 families were left homeless.[24]

February 1 Heidi Mendoza, a former auditor at the Commission on Audit (COA), reveals alleged irregularities and cover-ups in financial transactions involving the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).[25] February 3 The Court of Appeals clears Senator Panfilo Lacson for the alleged murders of publicist Bubby Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito.[26][27] February 4 The Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters win the 201011 PBA Philippine Cup, its third PBA championship.[28] February 8 Former Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Angelo Reyes commits suicide amidst graft charges.[29][30] February 10 Roger Dominguez, suspected carjack ring leader and brother of Raymond Dominguez, is arrested after being flagged down for violating traffic rules in Timog Avenue, Quezon City. Like his brother, the older Dominguez is linked to the killings of Venzon Evangelista and Ernane Sencil in January.[31][32] February 11 Seventeen Filipino seamen are kidnapped by Somali pirates off the coast of Oman.[33] February 12 Seven people are killed in a gunfight between government troops and suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in the hinterlands of Basilanprovince.[34] February 13 Four people are killed in a family massacre in Cainta, Rizal.[35] February 16 Three Filipinos (Ramon Credo, Sally Villanueva and Elizabeth Batain) are sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking. The three were imprisoned separately in 2008 and they were convicted and sentenced in 2009. They would be the first Filipinos to be executed in China.[36] February 18 Following a visit by Vice President Jejomar Binay, the People's Republic of China agrees to postpone the executions of three Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking.[37] February 20 After months of little activity, the Bulusan volcano suddenly erupts and sends a plume of ash 2 kilometers high.[38] February 24 Ilocos Sur Representative Ronald Singson, son of former Governor Chavit Singson, is sentenced to 1 year and 6 months of imprisonment in Hong Kong for possession of illegal drugs. Singson was caught by local authorities in July 2010 with 6.67 grams of pure cocaine and two tablets of the narcotic Nitrazepam at Hong Kong's international airport.[39][40]

March 1 After being sentenced to over a year of imprisonment in Hong Kong, Ronald Singson resigns as the representative of the first district of Ilocos Sur.[41] March 6 President Benigno Aquino III appoints Lieutenant General Eduardo Oban as the new chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.[42] March 8 Four people are killed and eighteen others are wounded after a passenger bus plunged into a creek in Barangay Pook, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.[43] March 9

A three-bus collision in Sorsogon kills at least four people and injures 32 others.[44] President Benigno Aquino III appoints retired AFP chief Ricardo David as the new immigration commissioner.[45]

March 11 Following the Thoku earthquake and tsunami, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issues a tsunami warning to parts of the Philippines along coastal areas and then raises alert to level 2, forcing evacuation.[47][48]

March 14 - The National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines, the highest governing body on issues and policies relating to science and technology, spearheaded a roundtable discussion on "How Sustainable Is Organic Agriculture?"

April 215 people consisting students, teachers, and 2 drivers were held hostage in Brgy.La Purrisima, Agusan del Sur. April 3 - 1 hostage freed. April 5 - 2 hostages were set free by hostages to get medicine but the Crisis Management committee convinced them to not go back. April 613 remaining hostages were abandoned in the hostage site. A press conference was held in the house of the mayor."Ondo Perez Group" is the said verdicts.

April 7 - A press conferenece in DOJ was held. BIR Kim Jacinto-Henares filed a case against Rep.Mikey Arroyo, his wife Angela and Brazilian model-actress Dianna Menezes. April 17 - Child actor AJ Perez, died at age of 18 due to vehicular accident. April 22 - An unexpected landslide happened on Compostella Valley, where 13 miners are killed.

May 89 - Typhoon *"Bebeng" entered the Philippine area of Responsibility, and hits Bicol region where 20 people reported dead while 2 still missing. May 10 -

The government of Camarines Sur, declared the said province under a state of calamity due to Typhoon Bebeng. Typhoon Bebeng leaves the country, along with about billions of dollars in property damaged.

May 13 - Veteran journalist and University of the Philippines professor of Mass Communication department Lourdes Simbulan (also known as Chit Estella) was reportedly killed in an accident of a bus (Universal Guiding Star Bus plated UVC-343) and a taxi that she was riding on (Abu Addey taxi plated TXH-532).[55]
