Day/Time: This is an online course. You must login to the Moodle course shell at least once a week. This will be counted as your attendance and active enrollment in this course. You can also make an appointment and schedule a meeting if you need to meet with me in person.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Formulate the problem or opportunity. Determine the research design; Determine the data collection method; Design the data collection forms; Design the sample and collect the data; Analyze and interpret the data; and Prepare the report, including a table of contents and a bibliography. Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be able to: demonstrate the appropriate level of competence in written expression

TEXT AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:


In addition to the students independent paper, readings may be assigned as needed. The instructor may place required articles or chapters on reserve in the library. Research tutorials can be found on the librarys web pages, online resources, at http://www.unva.edu/on_line_library.htm. (See librarian for sign-in instructions and research assistance). Please also review APA resources provided by the instructor under the course shell. Textbooks needed to conduct research are in stock at the campus virtual e-campus bookstore. This bookstore can be found on UNVAs website www.unva.edu. Click on learning resources and then click bookstore. This bookstore provides an easy-to-use and inexpensive way to order textbooks on-line. Students receive substantial discounts on both text books and general books. Students also can sell used textbooks on this site.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS, GRADING POLICY AND DUE DATES


This is a special course for selected students to do research under the guidance of a faculty member. This course requires the student to conduct research on 4 different Topics as listed in the List of Topics. This course enables the student to complete an information systems/Computer Science projects in their concentration. The project swill be monitored by a supervising faculty member and must be defended by the student as the final examination. Based on the students concentration, this course require students to develop an operational program or database, a detailed network/ internetwork design, or a network security plan demonstrating mastery and comprehensive knowledge of the learning outcomes in a students curriculum.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO FOR THIS COURSE You need to conduct research on 4 different topics as listed on the Topic Listed below and submit a research paper of 12+ pages for each of these topics by the due dates. Each research paper worth 25 points. Late submissions will not be graded. Your papers must follow APA style of writing. I have provided resources for APA. Late submissions OR submission via Email will NOT BE GRADED No Exceptions please.

You must submit an MS Word Document 10+ pages to the Link provided by the due date 7/23. Project Description SAP is one of the top leaders in providing ERP Enterprise Resource Planning software applications. Go to SAP web site www.sap.com and also review other resources such as oracle ERP package and current research/literature/books, articles related to ERP.

SAP Business suite software that you must research /study :


SAP ERP (enterprise resource planning) SAP Product Lifecycle Management

Conduct a comprehensive and detailed report for each of the above modules and discuss the followings.

A) The functionality and description of each module. B) Applications of each module, who /what company can benefit from them, C) Summarize your finding by discussing how companies can benefit from ERP software applications to improve their business.

Project #2: Cloud Computing

In the last few years Cloud computing has grown from being a promising business concept to one of the fastest growing segments of the IT. Write a 12+ page and: a) Define What is Cloud Computing and what are its applications b) Discuss security issues and concerns regarding Cloud computing and explain the best practices for providing security assurance with cloud computing

c) Who are the first top 5 largest software companies by market capitalization.

Project #3: Advances in Knowledge discovery and Data Mining


Due Date: Due Date: No later than 11:59 pm (EST) Sat Sept 3. Total Points: 25 points.
You must submit an MS Word Document 12+ pages to the Link provided by the due date 9/3. Project Description Review current literature in knowledge discovery and information visualization in data mining and knowledge discovery and write a 12+ pages research about the current advancements and discoveries in this field.

Project #4: Choose a current topic of you own


Due Date: Due Date: No later than 11:59 pm (EST) Sat Sept 24. Total Points: 25 points.
You must submit an MS Word Document 12+ pages to the Link provided by the due date 9/3. Project Description Review current literature in any IT related filed of your interest and writes a 12+ pages research about the current advancements and discoveries in your chosen topic.

Also review APA resources provided on the Moodle. 5- GRADING POLICY To achieve an "A" grade, the project must be excellent in content and presentation format (full compliance with APA style), timely submission of all requirements by the due date/s as listed under due date section. In addition your paper must be related to current development/research in computer science/Information Technology. Late submission/s will result in point deduction as listed above.

Grading Scale
The course grades are assigned as: 91 100% -------------A 81 90% ---------------B 71 80% -------------C Below 71%------------F

Grade disputes: If you disagree with final course grade that will be issued for your project you must make an appointment and meet with instructor to present your case. Your paper will be reviewed by a group of 2/3 IT faculty chaired by your instructor. You must present all the original sources that you have used to prepare your research/project and do a Power point presentation to defend your research. The committees decision on you grade will be final. Grade dispute concerns VIA EMAIL WILL NOT BE

RESPONDED. Grade disputes must be discussed / resolved in person

UNIVERSITY POLICIES:
Library Usage Library usage is required and will be expected in the development of one or more of your class projects. Library resources provide essential sources of data and information that you will need to successfully complete this course. The UNVA library offers a large number of resources, particularly online, for the student to use in this course for literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and other projects or papers. Students can gather information on current events, case studies, and scholarly research. Examples include current newspapers (Wall Street Journal), magazines (Business Week), databases (ProQuest, Business Source Complete), other online resources and access to the Internet. Students will become familiar with the library resources and shall incorporate them into assignments or projects as appropriate. Internet Usage: You will be expected to have daily access to the internet and e-mail. Assignment updates, additions and changes may be sent by e-mail. If you do not own a computer, there are computers accessible to you in UNVA computer labs and the UNVA Library. Related to internet usage, it is also expected that you are able to: Attach files to e-mails and retrieve attached files Use proper grammar and etiquette when writing e-mail Use virus protection utilities on your computer Use common applications such as word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Please be aware of the limitations of e-mail and adhere to the following guidelines. Unfortunately, because of past experience, the guidelines now include those e-mail behaviors to which no response will be given. Write the Course Code in subject line, then the topic (example: EDLD510: Annotated Bib. clarification). Include a greeting and salutation in all your e-mails. Include the name you prefer to be called. Retain all related e-mails at the bottom of any response you send and place your response at the top. I will not search through previous e-mails to attempt to discover the topic of our e-mail exchange, nor will I search through a message for new information. Content questions that require in-depth explanation are inappropriate for e-mail and you will receive a response asking you to come to office hours to have the question answered. In online courses, or blended courses, you may be directed to post your question or comments to the appropriate online discussion forum. Do not use e-mail in emergency situations or when you need a response in less than 24 hours. The following types of e-mail will receive no response: Any e-mail which contains hostile or accusatory language will remain unanswered and the sender may be reported to the appropriate authorities. Any e-mail sent requesting a change of grade for any reason other than an error in calculation or recording of points will remain unanswered. Any e-mail sent which contains student opinions about the fairness of the course or exams will remain unanswered.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY


A course grade of incomplete will be given only under very unusual circumstances. Instructors have the option of issuing an incomplete grade to students whose work in the course has been satisfactory and only if the student has completed at least 75% of the assigned work by the last day of class and only when an incomplete contract is

signed and approved by instructor. Incomplete grades must be changed no later than the end of the following term. (Egg. If a student is issued an incomplete grade in Winter 2010 , the student must complete the required work no later than the end of Spring 2010 and a grade change must be submitted by the instructor, otherwise Incomplete grade will automatically changed to an F.

ATTENDANCE, ABSENCE, LATENESS, INCOMPLETE:

There is no regular class meeting. This course is an independent research course. Student can meet with the instructor as many times as they wish with prior appointment during instructors office hours. A course grade of incomplete will be given only under very unusual circumstances, and only if the student has completed at least 75% of the assigned work by the last day of class and only when an incomplete contract is signed and approved. Students receiving Veterans benefits and International students in the US on F-1 visas are reminded that regular attendance is required. The university is required by law to report excessive absenteeism by students in these two categories.
