INTRODUCTION 1.

1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Is it real that lack of sleep can affect students performance? According to Collins Cobuild Learners Dictionary (page 1034), sleep is defined as a natural state of rest in which your eyes are closed, your body is inactive and your mind does not think. After that, stay up late means that if you stay up, your remain out of bed at a time when most people have gone to bed on at a time when you are normally in bed yourself. All-nighters had become a habit to all institution of education. A lot of experts say that sleep can act as a medicine or a good bathe that helps a person to rejuvenate himself. Instead, sleep also may be a way of recharging and gives the brain an opportunity to reorganize data that have been set in our mind. People who sleep less than six hours per nights is said to be have lack of sleep or insomniac. But, those who sleep in between the duration of six to eight hours per day were having a normal sleep. Human must sleep at least six to eight hours a day. Some sleep experts also said that the amount of sleep each person need is largely dependent on individual. An article about Sleep Duration and Health abstract from Truestar Health by Gregg D. Jacobs ,PhD in which a study conducted by Dr. Daniel Kripke and his colleagues at the University of California at San Diego belief that human need to sleep eight hours per night to stay healthy. Their findings shows that seven hours may be the most ideal sleep length in terms of longevity because sleep may just like a food, too little or too much is unhealthy. So, the optimal amount may help us to live longer.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

As competition is increasing from day to day, college students are forced to join in the rat race in order to become the best. As saying said be the best, beat the rest .This is the reason why more and more college students are willing to spend sleepless nights. Other than that, some students thought that they will consider as idle or poor if he or she does not stay up late. However, the trend of stay up late among the students in college especially before sitting for their crucial examination had become a rampant problem in which people believe it is not only disrupt their health but also their psychological condition. Not just that, doing an activity such as chatting, online, playing games and watching movies was also the reason for the all-nighter to stay up late. Therefore, to identify the main reason why college students stay up late a research was carried out. On top of that, an observation and surveys was done to see how will the college students perform in their study if they have insufficient sleep and tend to sleep during lecture and also the effect towards students academic performance. Furthermore, the sleeping pattern among college students that stays up late will be compared with the normal sleeper to study the problem. How many hours of sleep that a students supposed to have so that, we consider it as a normal sleep and the average sleep time that they had every day.
