Sport on the Barcoo
A great afternoon of junior
football last Saturday concluded
with a solid win by the Blackall
under 13s defeating Barcaldine
34-16.
The boys were keen to get in and
play a good hard game after having
had a number of weeks off due to
byes and forfeits and a great effort
by the whole team made this win
possible.
Dylan Kangan had a great
game, scoring three tries and one
conversion, and causing havoc for
the Sand Goanna defence every
time he touched the ball.
Dylan Dolinski terrorized the
defence with his charges and was
rewarded with two tries.
Brady Prow controlled play
around the ruck, setting up
a couple of tries, kicking two
conversions and making several
breaks.
Also playing strong games were
John Hauff and Jack Politch,
strong in defence and constructive
in attack, the latter nishing with
two conversions to seal the teams
convincing win.
This team is one to watch,
getting stronger with every game
they play.
Blackall provided the majority of
under 7s players in a game which
was very competitive, full of great
attack and defence by all players.
The children really enjoy
their football and show marked
improvement across the board.
The under 9s also showed great
improvement, playing a very
competitive game.
Braedan Carolan had his best
game since changing codes from
AFL and is gaining condence
with every outing, nishing with
three tries and starting to aim up
in defence.
A solid game by Peter Blucher
saw him rewarded with two tries
and a good defensive effort.
The under 11s saw an evenly
contested match with the
momentum in the game dictating
the scoring pattern.
Strong games were had by Kelly
Hauff, Jake Richardson and Will
Butler.
This side is coming on in leaps
and bounds and is becoming a
real force in the competition.
The next games will be held in
Barcaldine on June 16.

Blackall Junior League nish with a win
Sunday, June 3 saw two good
games of rinks played.
D Carter, J Bowyer, J Carter
and R Browning proved a shade
too strong for G MacNamara, A
Cameron, M Chapman and M
Gray, winning 24 15.
In the game between J Blucher, P
Hayward, C Pngst and D Holden
against R Schluter, R Doyle N
Kelly and G Whiteld, the lead
changed four times between ends
14 and 21 with Gary Whitelds
team nally winning 27 21.
In a social game Andy and Hazel
Johnson defeated Roy Black and
Lloyd Alexander 15 12 on 15
ends.
In another social game of ve a
side, each bowling three bowls,
Dally Holdens team defeated
Ross Brownings team 4 3 after
six ends.
No bowls were played on
Sunday, June 10 due to players
travelling to Barcaldine for open
trebles which was won by a team
from Blackwater.
Games for next Sunday are:
Pairs M Gray and M Chapman
v J Blucher and D Daly; T Holden
and A Cameron v L Alexander and
R Robinson; and C Pngst and D
Holden v J Bowyer & R Browning.
Bowls will be held in Longreach
on Saturday, June 16.

Due to the long weekend and
other commitments, numbers were
down for the Aub and Janet Carter
standard match held on Sunday
June 10.
Winner on the day was Bruce
Coward with a top handicap score
of 619.
Runner-up was Robyn Lound
with 593 and 3rd place went to
Noelene Gleeson with 578.
Other scores were Spencer Astill
on 548 and Aub Carter on 488,
after having a few equipment
problems.
Top round was a 92 shot by
Bruce Coward in the 10 second
round.
An enjoyable couple of hours
was had by all when members and
visitors enjoyed a barbecue lunch
for ex-Blackallites Brian and
Lorraine May, who called in to say
hello with a contingent of tourists
enjoying the sights of central
western Queensland.
The next ofcial shoot is the Les
and Cathy Wheelhouse centre re
and sports pistol event to be held
on June 24 at 9 am.
The Black Stump Open shoot is
coming up on July 7-8.
Bowlers get into the rinks
Jack Politch converts another try.
Blackall under 13s show a strong
defence.
Blackall residents are
maintaining the rage over the issue
of forced council amalgamations,
taking their protest message to the
streets last Monday and into the
letterboxes of federal politicians
Kevin Rudd and Simon Crean.
A march and rally organised by
the Blackall Action Committee
Against Amalgamation (BACAA)
brought six western Queensland
mayors to the town to join local
mayor Les Wheelhouse and
around 200 angry residents with
a message for the Beattie Labor
government they are not giving
up their local identity without a
ght.
A vote of no condence in Premier
Peter Beattie and his governments
amalgamation policy was passed
in a storm of cheers, along with
another resolution directing the
state to abandon its compulsory
amalgamation process and resume
talks with shires.
One of the towns newest
citizens, retiree Josie Holden told
the crowd which rallied to the
Blackall showgrounds that she
had experienced amalgamations
in Victoria where small towns were
now struggling to survive.
Amalgamation is a terminal
illness it attacks slowly, she
said. You will nd that social
events become non-events.
I came to your town by choice.
Now its my town and its in
jeopardy.
She was followed up by local
pharmacist Ian Kinsey who owns
six businesses and employs 30
people in Blackall, and had a
simple message.
If amalgamation happens, local
ownership will be gone from local
people. Dont let that happen, he
said.
BACAA member Terry
Brennan described the threat of
amalgamation as the greatest
most of its post-WWII residents
had faced.
This issue is beyond politics,
he said. Its about an ill-conceived
government decisionthat has
the potential to decimate western
Queensland.
I challenge the Minister to tell me
whether the services he envisages
amalgamated councils providing
will be anywhere near as good as
the ones we already have.

He obviously has no idea what
we do out here.
The crowd also heard from
a number of National Party
politicians who made their way
to Blackall for the day, including
shadow Local Government
Minister Howard Hobbs.
He said the Premiers aim was to
shift the publics gaze away from
water issues and all the dead sh
starting to stink in the bottom of
their dams.
The other thing he wants to do
is take over council water assets.
Theyre worth $18 billion and
you can bet he wants to sell them
off or franchise them to service his
growing debt.
He was joined on the platform
by Nationals candidate for
Flynn, Glenn Churchill and state
Member for Gregory, Vaughan
Johnson who said communities
would keep rallying until they got
satisfaction.
We are going to make the
difference, he said.
Apologies were received from a
number of federal politicians on the
day as well as Local Government

Blackall racing patrons celebrated
Oaks Day in plenty of style, with
around 400 people dressing up
and heading out to the course for
the Matilda Highway race series at
the beginning of June.
Beautiful autumn weather and
55 starters got the champagne
owing and kept the bookies busy
for the afternoon.
One of the chief sponsors of the
series, the Craiglea Stud came up
trumps in the 1200 metre class
six handicap, taking out the race
with Try Some Magic in a sizzling
time of 1:09.65, nudging out local
favourite Gidyea Coals, owned
by Barcoo Amateur Race Club
president Paul Banks.
Craigleas Stan and Marilyn
Johnston, from Kenilworth but
based at Tambo for the Matilda
Highway series, scored a quinella
in the Ray White Rural weight
for age event, managing rst and
second placings with Craiglea
Warrior and Craiglea Bob.
Longreach race club president
Julie Eggerling also had a double
for the day when her horse Innarto
won the Grant Daniel Long class
B handicap, followed by a win for
Dolanity in race two, the Black
Toyota Maiden Plate.
Barcaldine trainer Todd Austin
nished the meet with two wins,
Contractual in the Landmark class
one handicap and Unknown Fact
in the Elders Ltd class three.
Just as important to many on
the day was the results in the
Fashions of the Field stakes.
Women In Racing director
Jennifer Campbell-Bartels was on
hand to present the coveted prizes
to Caitlyn Johnstone, daughter of
local trainer Tommy Johnstone,
Emma Betts, who has just moved
up from Coonabarabran, NSW to
work at local Santa Gertrudis stud
Ravensbourne, and to Heather
Hirsch, Caranna, Charleville.
Local ambo David Everett won
the best dressed stallion prize and
Chloe Kings received a Women In
Racing award for the style that
most epitomised racewear on the
day.
Race club president Paul Banks
said the big numbers of horses
always pulled a good crowd in,
which included Tasmanian and
South Australian tourists camping
at Blackall for the weekend.
The word about our great
Fashions of the Field prizes has
really spread around the district
too, Paul said.
There were plenty of women in racing
at Blackall on the weekend, when
Barcoo Amateur Race Club secretary
Kylie Banks (right) made a presentation
to Longreachs Julie Eggerling for her
win with Dolanity, along with strapper

Oaks Day at Blackall races
The Blackall Magpies hosted the
Barcaldine Sand Goannas for the
weekends rugby league xture
at the Blackall showgrounds in
very cold conditions last Saturday
night.
Barcaldine dominated play with
their strong attack and Blackall
did very well to keep the score to
26-nil at halftime.
Blackall had opportunities but
were unable to convert them into
points.
After halftime, the Blackall
players had to work very hard to
contain Barcaldine who piled on
more points to take the nal score
to 56-nil.
Barcaldine try scorers were
C Woods (1), C Jackson (2), C
Bowering (1), M Hansen (2), D
Blucher (1), D Chilcott (1) and
5 conversions, G Maloney (1),
I Moulds (1), R Kelly (1), and 1
conversion to D Mahoney.
Blackalls Man of the Match was
Lachlan Krieg and Players Player
was Errol Moller.
An understrength team of
Blackall Magpies travelled to
Ilfracombe the previous weekend
to take on the Scorpions.
The Magpies had only eight
regular players and recruited eight
others for the xture.
At 2pm the game was in doubt
as Ilfracombe had not been able to
locate a referee.
With all Blackall players keen
to play they were able to get the
services of John Robinson from
Tambo.
The Magpies put in a valiant and
gutsy effort although the score
blew out to 103 to 4.
The Ilfracombe players and
ofcials were full of encouragement
for the Blackall boys, who did not
Sand Goannas take honours in
weekend footy clash

Sue Frost has completed her traineeship with the
Barcoo Independent and now holds a Certicate II in
Print & Graphic Design.
Sue completed all the requirements for her course
at the end of May and is now employed by the Blackall
Shire Council to continue her work with both the
paper and at the Visitor Information Centre.
Blackall Newspaper Group secretary Sally Cripps
congratulated Sue on taking up the challenge of the
traineeship and making such a success of it.
Sue didnt have any special knowledge of computers
or the Adobe program before she started but shes
gained a great amount of knowledge on the job that
has really made the paper stand out, Sally said.
A state government subsidy funded the year-long
traineeship at no cost to the newspaper group, but it
must now use some of its own money to pay for the
portion of time that Sue spends each week putting
the newspaper together.
Sally said this was only an interim solution as the
newspaper group didnt have the nancial capacity
to employ someone full-time.
We are operating as a community venture not as
a commercial operation, in the absence of any local
private initiative, so we havent been trying to make
lots of money, she explained.
We were unable to nd a suitable trainee to
replace Sue despite numerous advertisements and
personal enquiries, and so we have to raid the money
set aside for photocopier maintenance and computer
replacement, for wages instead.
At this stage this arrangement will only last until
mid-September when the peak tourist season is over
at the VIC, and when the newspaper groups fund
are run down.
We are looking into various ways of remaining
open after this but we are really in a predicament at
this stage, Sally said.
Substantial extra funds may be needed to keep
the paper going if we are not able to nd someone to
make use of another print media traineeship.
The newspaper group held its annual general
meeting in April, re-electing Margaret Warren as
president and Lynette Davison as treasurer, as well
as secretary Sally Cripps.
Annual membership forms have been distributed
with this issue of the Barcoo Independent, and
donations will be warmly received as well.

Reform commissioner Bob Longlands and Local
Government Minister Andrew Fraser.
Two glaring omissions from the apologies list were
Premier Beattie and union representatives, who did
not reply to invitations to attend.
Blackall was amongst the 80 shires which joined in
the Red Friday protests three days earlier, featuring
a Red Ghost on horseback.
Dressed in Victorian costume made by Robyn
Adams, Alison Krieg symbolised Blackalls past
in a tableau around the towns Australian Labor
Federation monument, chasing characters dressed
as Minister Fraser and Premier Beattie away from
their attempts to whitewash the towns rights.
Alisons costume will now be displayed at the Visitor
Information Centre with the towns amalgamation
story beside it.
Red T-shirts bearing the slogan Save Our Shire
are the latest fashion item in the town, and a new
postcard campaign is about to begin amongst
residents.
Pre-addressed to aspiring Prime Minister Kevin
Rudd and the federal Minister responsible for Local
Government, Simon Crean, the Blackall action group
hopes to get them to apply some pressure to state
colleagues to reconsider their actions.

Attending Blackalls garden expo during the
Heartland Festival has paid off for Veronica Driver.
Just by taking part in the Arid Garden workshop
run by Desert Channels Queensland at the expo,
Veronica has won a $10 000 garden makeover.
Her very own Backyard Blitz includes plants,
materials, equipment and contract labour, using
waterwise plants and design concepts.
The chance to win the garden makeover was one of
the things that attracted around 70 keen gardeners
from Tambo, Aramac, Barcaldine and Longreach to
the expo according to organiser Kylie Banks, joining
many of Blackalls green thumb enthusiasts.
Kylie said it had been very exciting to welcome that
number.
Garden designer Shelley Darks presentations
were a real drawcard and the WaterWise information
presented by Desert Channels Queensland went
down well, she said.
Mulch treatments that look good and conserve water
at the same time were one of the topics explored,
with the plentiful gidyea stone given a big tick for its
water retaining properties and interesting colours.
The natural alkalinity of most soils in the region was
highlighted with a practical session of soil testing.
Maximum contrast and strong lines were some of
the principles outlined by Shelley Dark when she
spoke about giving gardens that Wow factor.
Multiple plantings and complementary colour
schemes were other tips she passed on, before taking
her audience on a garden journey to Italy.
The expo was followed by a day trip to Barcaldine
to visit the gardens there that are part of the Open
Garden Scheme this year.
Opening their gardens to the public were Jane and
Greg Castle, Heather and John Livingstone, and
James and Sue Walker at Cumberland.
Kylie said the arid garden at the Barcaldine State
School had proved a real talking point too.
It had a lot of rare and beautiful plants and it was
very impressive by all accounts, she said.
Veronica wins garden makeover
Desert Channels Queenslands arid gardens guru, Jeff
Poole and garden makeover winner, Veronica Driver of
Blackall hold up the lucky entry that was drawn out of the
barrel.
Raising money for Queensland
Cancer
The Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer hosted by
Lavina Anderson on Wednesday, May 30 outside
4 Square was a low-key affair, due in part to well-
needed rain falling on the day.
With donations of food and money, a total of
$128.10 was made from the morning tea and $47
from the rafe, totaling $175.10 in the aid towards
a cancer cure.
Lavina will hold more Queensland Cancer
fundraising activities, including a Fun Run on
August 5 and Daffodil Day on August 24.
Merchandise for sale on the day will include Daffodil
Day merchandise and fresh daffodils.

A very successful morning tea hosted by the
Anglican church ladies was held on Thursday, May
31 in the church grounds.
A total of $1266 was raised for the Cancer Council
from the morning tea sales and a multi-draw rafe.
The day is becoming very popular for the yummy
array of food on offer and the relaxed setting of the
gardens.
The day would not be possible without the wonderful
support of individuals and business houses which
contribute in many ways to make the day a huge
success.

The families of Barbara Bauer, Nell Brumby, Agnes Choyce
and Betty Turner were special guests at an Easter service
at Holy Trinity Anglican Church when two stained glass
windows, part of the rebuilt church front, were dedicated
to the memory of these four special women. The windows
were funded by the four families and dedicated by Bishop
Godfrey Friar of Rockhampton. They were made by former
Blackall resident Diane Colomeitz (nee OKeefe) who lives
in Brisbane.

The Rotary Club of Blackall present Matthew Wemyss
with a cheque for $250. Matthew will be travelling to the
USA to attend the nals of the National High School Rodeo
Association in Springeld Illinois on July 16. Matthew came
second at the National High School nals in Dubbo at the
end of April to qualify for the team to the USA.
Blackall shire councillors are set to resolve the
ongoing wrangle between disabled street crossing
access and car parking at the western end of the
Shamrock Street CBD.
Cr Barry Muir has argued that the wheelchair
access ramps beside IGA and the newsagency, which
provide a gentler slope onto the street than the
kerbing, should be signposted and kept clear, even if
it means the loss of parking spaces before and after
the ramps.
They get used a lot, he said. Using the gutter
isnt as easy as it looks.
On the other hand Crs Mac Allan and Tina Holden
have objected strongly to taking more parking spaces
out of the busiest section of Blackalls CBD.
The whole gutter is a ramp, Cr Holden said.
What were talking about is a certain percentage of
the population taking away the access of others.
Consulting engineer Graham Wills was asked for
his advice on what would be needed to signpost the
ramps to be in line with trafc and parking rules,
and he presented his interpretation, called gopher
access, to council this week.
While this needs to be checked with the Department
of Main Roads, Mr Wills said that no parking signs
could be erected 10 metres before and three metres
after the ramps, on both east and westbound lanes
of Shamrock Street.
This would only have a minor impact on parking
on the northern side as the IGA driveway access
takes up most of the 10 metres required, but on the
southern side of the street, up to two vehicle spaces,
or 13 metres of parking, would go.
Mr Wills said a suggestion that the ramps be
moved closer to the Coronation Drive intersection, to
minimise the loss of parking spaces, had been looked
at but judged not safe enough.
Cr Les Wheelhouse asked if the access ramps could
be moved further east along Shamrock Street where
the impact on parking would be less, but Cr Peter
Skewes suggested that people wouldnt use them in
a different location.
Council will continue to debate the matter at a
future meeting, once MRD advice is received.
Can we lose any Shamrock Street parking spaces? Council to debate issue

Forced amalgamations of rural
shire councils could leave a lin-
gering bad taste for country resi-
dents according to president of
the Rural Doctors Association of
Queensland, Dr John Hall.
In some rural shires, signicant
health infrastructure is provided
by local councils and not by state
government or private investors,
Dr Hall said.
Current examples include
Birdsville Clinic, and equipment,
vehicles and accommodation in
Cloncurry.
Similar council-owned clinics
are planned for Jandowae and
Charleville and are expected to at-
tract and retain doctors there.
Our fear is that forced amal-
gamations into super-shires will
prevent the development of more
local solutions like this, Dr Hall
said.
The Birdsville Clinic and Dia-
mantina Health Service are fantas-
tic examples of how shire councils
nd and fund local solutions to lo-
cal problems.
Small shire councils nd so-
lutions where huge bodies like
Queensland Health or proposed
mega-shires dont have the neces-
sary exibility.
RDAQ members cant see how
mega-shires can achieve the same
positive results for health.
At the RDAQ Conference at Yep-
poon on Saturday, Health Minis-
ter Stephen Robertson was asked
if he would be a voice of reason
when amalgamations are dis-
cussed in Cabinet.
Forced amalgamations, driven
by economic rationalist ideals,
could have devastating long-term
effects on small rural communi-
ties, said Cloncurry doctor Dr
Sheilagh Cronin.
There is no way a mega-shire
could provide the different solu-
tions each different community
might need, and still seem fair or
impartial. Communities within the
mega-shires arent all the same,
one size wont t all, Dr Cronin
said.
Forced amalgamations: bad medicine for
rural shires?

Chemical cleanup service coming
A program that improves farm
safety, chemical storages and
appropriate disposal awareness all
in the one hit will be collecting in
the Blackall shire again shortly.
The ChemClear program has
received registered bookings from
holders of unwanted chemicals in
the area so is planning a collection
run through Queensland in late
July or early August.
Group 1 chemicals, currently
registered ag and vet chemicals
manufactured by companies
supporting this stewardship
initiative, are collected free of
charge under the program.
Group 2 chemicals are those
chemicals that are no longer
registered, unknown, out of date,
or mixed ag and vet chemicals.
The ChemClear service is free
to primary producers disposing
of group 1 rural chemicals, and
Queenslands Environment
Protection Agency is providing
funding to cover 50 per cent of
the group 2 classied chemical
disposal costs.
There are currently 12 000 litres
of group 1 chemicals registered for
collection and 5300 litres of group
2, totalling just over 17 000 litres.
ChemClear is hoping to get this
quantity up to around 25 000
litres so is urging people to take
an inventory of their products and
register for the collection to be
eligible for the 50 per cent funding
subsidy.
ChemClear collects from any
person holding unwanted ag and
vet chemicals.
They are largely primary pro-
ducers but can be ag-businesses,
golf courses, councils, government
agencies and chemical distribu-
tion stores.
The collection is being scheduled
for late July-early August so get in
quick.
ChemClear has undertaken
nine collections across six states,
culminating in a total of over 88
tonne of unwanted and obsolete
rural chemicals being retrieved.
National program coordinator
Lisa Nixon said that as well as
safety, health and stock benets
of the program, its also aimed
at supporting users of ag and vet
chemicals comply with impacts
of environmental and farm
management systems by providing
a service to meet quality assurance
standards and maintain good
environmental practices.
Weve found that users of the
program are relieved to hand over
their unwanted chemicals that in
some cases have been lying around
for up to 30 years, she said.
The chemicals we are collecting
can result from changes in farming
direction, deceased estates,
inherited chemicals from relatives
and are often due to the purchase
or sale of a property.
To see the relief on waste
holders faces to nally drop off
their chemicals to an appropriate
disposal program is very
satisfying.
For registrations contact 1800
008 182 or go online at www.
