Remarkable comeback in father/son game

In A singles between father and son at the Blackall Bowls Club on Sunday July 8, John Carter staged a remarkable comeback after being down 27-17 to beat Dave 31-30. Unfortunately Dally Holden could not do the same thing in B singles, with John Bowyer leading all the way to win 31-16. In another hard-fought B singles game Tina Holden and Greg MacNamara matched motors for 36 ends with Tina nally winning 31-26 in a very good game. In sets of nine ends Ross Browning was too strong for Don Daly, winning 12-6 and 11-9. Sunday, July 1 saw the rinks nal for 2007 played in a hard fought game with Woody, Rob Doyle, Lou Kelly and Gary Whiteld against Dave Carter, John Bowyer, John Carter and Ross Browning. Gary led 17-14 on the 18th end then lost the next ve ends to give Ross a commanding lead of 29-17, with Rosss team winning 29-18. Congratulations to Ross and his team. Racing patrons enjoy full program

A full seven-race program, free entry and ne winter weather combined to give race goers an entertaining afternoon at Blackall on Saturday. The Barcoo Amateur Race Club had two events added to its program when a wet track stopped racing in Barcaldine last weekend. One of the extra races was the last in the Matilda Highway series for 2007, which was won by Cocktail Shaker, trained by Shane Iverson and ridden by Ross Tilley. The feature race of the day, the Noel Allom Memorial Cup was won by Tones from Todd Austins stables in Barcaldine. Fashions of the Field at the Blackall races is becoming an event of its own. The elds are as strong as the races themselves. Terrence Ellison won the Best Dressed Man prize, Rebecca Richardson won the $300 fashion voucher from Opal Creek Feedlot and Seymours Dept Store, and Talia Anderson won the Best Hat award.

Magpies stick it out against the odds

Blackall Rugby League president Gwynne Stockwell has praised the senior rugby league team which took to the eld for an away game against Barcaldine last Saturday. Fielding the bare minimum of 13, with no interchange players, the Magpies were soundly beaten 96-6 by the Sand Goannas but were given a guard of honour and cheered from the eld by their opposition at the end of the game. It would have been easy to forfeit and go to the races but that word is not in my vocabulary, Gwynne said. I cant describe how proud I was of these young blokes, who played hard all afternoon and were goodhumoured the whole way. The team consisted of Brett Hayman, Lachlan Krieg, Josh Duncan, Dallas Kowald-Dawson, Chris Williams, Jeremy Barron, Errol Moller, Mitch Horsten, John Turner, Jamie MacMillan, Alex Stockwell, Blake Carolan and Kahem Elmy. Ben Avery coaches them. By agreement with Barcaldine the game was played in four twenty-minute quarters. While the score blew out,

Gwynne said it was not a true indication of the courage shown by the Magpies, who were down to 11 men at one stage due to injuries. They battled on until the nal whistle and drew much admiration from the spectators and Barcaldine players for their persistence and refusal to say die, she said. Josh Duncan, who also won the Players Player award, scored Blackalls try and Chris Williams made the conversion. Responding to negative comments about the future of rugby league in Blackall, Gwynne said she had complete faith that the Magpies will be around for some time after seeing some of the efforts put in this year. Our sponsor support is good and we still have the best crowd support in the central west, she said. The Magpies have a home game this weekend when they host Ilfracombe at the Blackall showgrounds, starting at 5.30 pm. The following week is a bye for the Magpies and then the Winton Devils will travel to Blackall to play an afternoon game at 3.30 pm.

Sudoka solution from pg 14

The Blackall Shire Council this week resolved to prepare the way to conduct a referendum on forced shire amalgamations. This follows advice from the Local Government Association of Queensland that it would be lawful for councils to hold a poll on the issue. LGAQ president Paul Bell said it was the only way to give people a say. I fully understand that the results of these referendums will not be legally binding on the state government, he said. However, it will be a very brave government that bucks the will of the people. The Blackall council would go ahead with such action in the event that forced amalgamations or boundary changes are recommended by the Local Government Reform Commission on August 1. The proposed date for the poll is August 18, shortly before expected debate on amalgamation in state parliament on August 27. With less than three weeks to

Blackall agents to contest Young Auctioneers nal

Two of Blackalls stock and station agents, Anthony Hyland from Landmark and Chris Williams from Newforce Livestock, are amongst the eight nalists for the Queensland Young Auctioneers competition to be held in Brisbane during the Ekka. They qualied at an auctioneers training course conducted by the Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association in Rockhampton recently, attended by 38 young agents from as far away as Mareeba and Katherine, NT. Chris rst participated in the scheme last year when he joined the learner program but was sent to the advanced group to polish his skills this time round. He said that clients appreciated knowing they were employing someone who could bring them the best results and so he was happy to take on board all the advice on speaking clearly and projecting his voice.

Juniors in city/country league carnival

Two of Blackalls younger footballers, Dylan Dolinski and Wylie Wilson took part in a city/ country rugby league carnival at Roma on June 24-25. The boys were members of the Central West under 14 side at the carnival. Their rst game was against a Roma side. At halftime Central West were down 16-0 but came back to record a narrow 20-28 defeat. In their second game of the weekend, Central West was up against a very well drilled side from Brisbane. The country boys tackled and defended their line on many occasions to go down 38-4, not the blowout score many were expecting. The nal game was against South West, which included players from towns around St George. Central West was looking for a win and there was plenty of talk and support on the eld. At the half-time break, CW was leading 8-0. They only let SW in for one try with the nal score being 14-4 to the Central West. Neville Dolinski said his son Dylan had only been playing with Blackalls junior Magpies this year in the under 13s, but played primary schoolboy games last year for Central and North West teams, representing the CW under 13s in Gladstone earlier in the year. Wylie represented a Central West under 15 side in Townsville early in 2007 and also travelled to Gladstone for rep football. He is playing this season with Barcaldines under 15s after starting off last year for the Gemelds under 14s in the Emerald area.

That was but one day in the life of a Flying Doctor plane, but it was a day that touched our lives. This venture has given me the opportunity to say thank you. Census gures are grim

Recently released population statistics paint a grim picture for the Blackall district. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the 2006 census counted 1456 people in the Blackall shire, a drop of 20 per cent from when the last count was taken in 2001. At that time there were 1822 people living in the shire. Shire mayor Les Wheelhouse expressed surprise at the extent of the decline. I thought we would have stabilised a bit more than that, but I guess the increase in numbers at the school and in the town has only happened in the last 12 months, he said. Its hard to pinpoint any one thing you cant blame the rail closure because all their staff are still here. People have been going out of wool for a while, but I guess theres been a fairly major decline on the rural side, with properties sold and amalgamated into a single unit.

Rebecca is now heading to Birdsville for the races, thanks to sponsorship by Holden, and will be raising the RFDSs prole on the gate and at the bar over the weekend. She said she was planning a ball towards the end of her campaign to thank the community for its help. The judging and awards presentation takes place in Brisbane on November 15-16. Until then, Rebecca said local people can help by continuing to support her rafes or add to the donation tin at the Visitor Information Centre.

Cr Wheelhouse added that the mineral boom on the Central Highlands had drawn people away too. I think things are looking up though people are moving back and new families are coming to town. We can look forward to continued growth with the projects the council has in hand, such as the spelling centre at the saleyards, the Jericho-Windorah roadworks and the planned industrial estate. He said there were also plenty of job opportunities for people in the area, both on the land and in town. Women just outnumber men in Blackall - 49 per cent of the population were male and 51 per cent were female. The average age of people in the shire is 42 years, compared with 37 years for Australia in general. The median weekly rent in Blackall in 2006 was $100, compared to $190 in Australia at large. The median monthly housing loan repayment was $499, compared to the Australian average of $1300.

Collars to track wild dogs at Blackall

A project to t wild dogs with collars containing tracking devices has begun in the Blackall region, aimed at nding out more about dog dispersal activity. This is an extension of a project which started in the Yuleba region last year, in which seven dogs were trapped and collared and then had their activities monitored. One travelled 100 kilometres in four days and eventually roamed over 200 kilometres in two, twoweek jaunts curtailed by the Barrier Fence. Senior zoologist with the Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries and long-time wild dog researcher Lee Allen undertook the tracking study at Yuleba last year and is now doing similar work at Blackall and Kumbarilla, southwest of Dalby. In May Lee told a group of Blackall shire councillors that the three-year Blackall Project, that monitored dog activity before and after baiting in the Blackall, Barcaldine and Tambo shires between 2003 and 2006, found that there wasnt any difference in wild dog activity between the properties that baited compared to those that did not bait. There were 100 tonnes of meat and 20 kilograms of Doggone baits put out in that time, he said. The three councils put $15,000 per annum towards the research project. What the study did show is that baiting at certain times seemed to increase activity. Spikes on the graph showed that dog activity increased by 80 per cent after baiting in March/April and by a massive 216 per cent when baiting was carried out in October/November. Baiting from May to September brought a 46 per cent decrease in wild dog activity. One hypothesis is that baiting resident wild dogs creates a sink for young dogs to move in to, while another theory is that baiting campaign survivors are moving around more looking for mates. It is this need to understand the lifestyles and patterns of dogs movements that has led to the collaring project. Three dingoes from 18 to 21 kilograms were trapped along the Barcoo River in May and are now being monitored. One of these dogs, trapped on Woodbine just north of Blackall, has subsequently travelled 100 kilometres south-west to a property adjoining Idalia National Park before returning to the Blackall area. This movement took about 16 days and crossed open downs and sheep properties, an unbelievable movement, according to Lee.

He said that the focus on how to manage wild dogs was changing. Were now thinking of how to take these young dogs out of the equation to reduce the need for dispersal. While he said he wouldnt like to see producers or the council move away from baiting at the most effective time of year, around May, he felt it would be worthwhile to trial coordinated baiting programs through the summer months of November, December and January in order to catch pups dispersing to new areas. Baiting in the Blackall region hasnt traditionally taken place at this time and people at the meeting werent condent of a positive initial response. During the meeting Lee also highlighted the use of Maremmas as guard dogs, as they maintain a territory that would be a deterrent to young dingoes. They offer the potential of protecting stock without baiting, he said, adding that there are signicant training and handling issues before they would work effectively.

Kindy funds still badly needed

The Diamonds in the Dust formal ball just over a fortnight away is the latest in a string of fund-raising activities organised by the Blackall Kindergarten Association to help manage the groups nancial difculties. President David Everett said he had a great committee working hard but last years nancial crisis brought on by unpaid superannuation and tax debts, although managed, still meant the groups position was quite precarious. I did some sums recently and our expenses are going up so we could still be faced with a signicant shortfall, he said. We are not able to put any money away. Wages make up about three-quarters of the Kindys expenditure. Small enrolment numbers 10 to 12 in day care and 14 in kindy mean there is a diminishing base to draw on to pay for wages and costs. The Kindergarten Association is employing four staff this year, Anne-Maree Newman, Kristy Olive, Leanne Eagle and Bec Olive. David said the staff had given really valuable input into helping the committee manage the business and had done everything they could to minimise the hours without decreasing the service. The committee is still working towards becoming a branch of the Crche and Kindergarten Centre. As well as increasing fees and undertaking a mammoth fundraising effort which has included a number of catering jobs and the Quick Shears, the group has sourced two grants, one from the Gambling Community Benet Fund for play and educational equipment, and another from the Australian Governments Department of Family and Community Services which will provide a new fridge, fax, cordless phone and washing machine.

the McGregor Summer School in Toowoomba has recently been highlighted by former resident Jan Gall. Although records are patchy, Jan believes that Blackall has had at least one person in attendance at over half of the 40 highly regarded performing, visual and creative arts schools. Sometimes this number has been as many as four or ve Blackall people attending at the one time, she said. This is due in large part to the Molly Greenhalgh Memorial Scholarship, initiated in 1981 and funded jointly by the Blackall Cultural Association and the Blackall branch of Queensland Arts Council, of which Molly was a founding member and patron. It is made available annually for a local resident to attend the residential school, paying a large portion of the costs of attendance which, because of the distance from Toowoomba, includes board and travel expenses. The scholarship was rst awarded in 1981 to

The latest fundraiser, the ball will give the community a chance to dress up and enjoy the ne things in life as well as help out the kindy. One of the organisers, Mardi Noonan said elegant nger food would be served amidst a lavishly decorated Cultural Centre to give an intimate feel to the evening. The band comes from the Gold Coast and travels to island resorts to play large crowds, she said. They have a huge range of music from the Beatles/Eagles to Match Box 20/Cold Play. The dance sport tutor will also be on hand to play some old-time dance music. For the fashionably on-time, Presidents Drinks will get underway at 6.30. All the Kindy needs now is a group or individual to help out with a baby-sitting service. Mardi said all monies would go to the service provider, not to the Kindy.

none other than Mollys granddaughter, Vynka Greenhalgh. Disciplines undertaken by Blackall students have covered a wide range of interests including painting, pottery, sculpture, weaving, silk painting, patchwork, embroidery, furniture making and silversmithing. But this was only the beginning of the benecial effect that attendance has had on the Blackall community, according to Jan. People back in Blackall saw the results of time spent at McGregor and wanted to start learning themselves, she said. As a result, Blackall now has its own residential Arts Centre, albeit on a much smaller scale than McGregor, where it conducts its own bush schools and workshops so that more and more people out west are able to avail themselves of the opportunity to participate in creative pursuits. The latest Molly Greenhalgh Memorial Scholarship, for tuition to the 40th McGregor Summer School in 2008, is now open for applications.

Good numbers at Yaraka gymkhana

Blackall had its usual strong presence at the Yaraka gymkhana on Saturday, helping to ll out the nomination sheets despite the cancellation of the Sunday campdraft. While the ongoing drought conditions made it too difcult to stage the draft, the dry track worked in the districts favour for the gymkhana, with nominations approaching last years record of over 100. Mike Wacker and Alister Macdonald were rst and second in the mens bending nal, Jessica Lloyd and Gill Russell posted similar results in the womens event, while Boyd Russell and Jake Lloyd claimed rsts in their age groups, and a third placing went to Wilson Sprague. In the ag races, Conan Russell and Bronte Lloyd secured second placings while James Harlow and Colin Wood were rst and third in the mens event. Figure of eight races saw Wilson and Holly Sprague with rst prizes, while Hilary Wood and Bronte Lloyd took out second prizes. Nan Harlow and Ingrid Wood were rst and third in the ladies event, and rst and second went to James Harlow and Colin Wood in the mens. Wilson Sprague was rst in his barrel race, as was Jake Lloyd in his event, with Conan Russell close behind in third. Courtney Lloyd claimed third place in her age group, Nan Harlow second in the ladies and James Harlow rst in the mens. Georgia Sprague was second in the Up and Back event for the 6 and under 9 age group while the Blackall trio of Jake Lloyd, Hilary Wood and Conan Russell trifectaed their Walk, Trot and Lead, and Bronte Lloyd was second in her age bracket. Jessica Lloyd streaked away from the opposition in the adult Walk, Trot and Gallop, followed by Kirsten then Michaela Russell. Conan Russell partnered with Nick Brown to win the under 12 Musical Chairs, Jessica Lloyd came third in the melon race, and Cracker and Alister Macdonald managed to keep the buckjumping antics to a minimum to take third place in the rescue race. James and Nan Harlow teamed up to win the Thread the Needle novelty event and James was named the champion male rider for the day. Organisers said the day would provide an excellent nancial result for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and local charities.
