Solution: a) 30 + 41 + 29 + 32 + 35 + 85 + 27 =279 Mean = 279 7 = 39.85 39.9 mm Arranged data {27, 29, 30, 32, 35, 41, 85} Median = 32 mm b) Median. The figure for June, 85 mm, is an outlier / extreme value. The mean is not a good representation because of the extreme value. It is larger than 6 out of 7 of the observation.

If the median mark is 3, what is the range of values of y? (3 marks) Using the largest possible value of y found in (a), calculate the mean mark. Then determine which measure is a better estimation for the marks in the class? Explain your answer. (3 marks)

The biggest value of y occurs here. RHS = LHS Excluding the 3 5+7+y=5+5+4 y=2

The smallest value of y occurs here. RHS = LHS Excluding the 3 5+7+y+5=5+4 y = 8 Thus the smallest value for y = 0. (Take note that y cannot be negative)

Hence the range of values of y is 0 y 2 . b) When y = 2, Mean = (7 + 4 + 18 + 20 + 20) 29 = 2.38 The calculation of the mean involves all the data and there are no extreme values in this data set. Thus, the mean is a better estimation for the marks scored by the class.
