From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! This weekends Gospel from Matthew (22:1-14) reminds me of the experience I had living in New York City when I was in my early thirties. Moving to a place like Manhattan, I quickly discovered that people can be so focused on their careers and professional advancement that other values and considerations especially friendship-- can often and easily be disregarded. Ill never forget making a luncheon appointment with a colleague once: Great, he said. Next Wednesday sounds fine. Ill just pencil you in on my calendar and get back to you. I quickly caught on to his not so subtle message: Pencil you in meant Ill be happy to get together unless I get a better offer in the meantime. So much for friendship or commitment. Todays parable about the king (not just anyone, but The King!) deals with the importance of making and keeping commitments. A monarch issues an invitation to several of his subjects, who basically ignore his overture. Many of them decided, incredibly, that they had received a better offer. Not even the kings messengers could coax or cajole them into committing themselves to being present to the banquet he was planning for his son. Ultimately, the king flies into a rage at their rude rebuff and has them and their world destroyed. Sadly, the second round of invitationsapparently given at random to anyone and everyoneis met with less than complete respect as well. Whats going on here? Its not at all difficult for us to piece together the symbolic message of this story: the king is God; the son is Gods Son, Jesus. The first recipients of the invitation are the original hearers of the Wordin this case, the Jewish leaders who rejected the invitation to respond to the message and person of Jesus. The second group of potential guests includes the Gentilesoutsiders-- people like ourselves. Still, acceptance of the invitation implies some responsibility. One is obliged to respect both the giver and the gift, which obviously, the gentleman who declined to put on the appropriate garment knew full well. How are we in our relationship with God and with others? Do we accept Gods invitation to enter more deeply into His Presence and Love? Or do we pencil Him in to try to justify our lack of commitment or response? Maybe we even react with hostility (active or passive) to any suggestion that we change our lives, deepen our relationships, honor our commitments.

God is remarkably patient with us and never ceases to offer us His friendship and love. But there are consequences for our rejection of that friendship by our own volition, we become alienated and estranged from God, from others, and from our very own selves. Today and every single day of our lives, the Lord extends to us His invitation to enter more deeply into His Presence and Love. We are challenged to stop making excuses and to commit and prepare ourselves for the banquet to which we are welcome guests. Dont just pencil God in make a commitment and put it in ink. Indelible ink. God bless,

Elsewhere in the Parish

Many thanks to all who participated in the wonderful celebrations for St. Francis weekend last week. Thanks to all who participated in the St. Francis Day fair sponsored by our parish school, Old Mission Montessori School. This years event, in conjunction with Old Mission San Luis Rey included crafts and food booths, the traditional horse drops his lunch event, pet adoptions, and the Blessing of the Animals. We also had the chance to bless our newly-renovated Koi Pond. The evening before the Feast of St. Francis is called the Transitusa special celebration of Word and prayer in the Old Mission Church. Our Guardian, Fr. Larry Dolan ofm, presided. Thanks to the combined parish choirs directed by Lupe Rios, our lay Covenant Members, as well as the participation of Secular Franciscans and parishioners. Our special guests this year were our brothers, the Benedictine monks of Prince of Peace Abbey as well as the friars of the Society of St. Francis of the Episcopal Church, who drove down from Los Angeles to be with us. The Sundays liturgies were equally rich, including the recitation of a morning Franciscan Crown rosary in the Old Mission Church, with a procession led by our Altar Servers and members of the Alhambrans. Again, the parish choirs sang beautifully. Also, we hope you noticed the beautiful handcrafted color streamers made by Abigail Guzman-Lopez Next Week: Fr. Chuck will be in Ohio on vacation October 12-19. Correction: The correct email for graphic designer Mar Muyco is mardesign@cox.net. Mar is responsible for the beautiful logo designs on the new church shirts worn by our Religious Education catechists.

October 9, 2011 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time| 7

No ms amistades y compromisos. An as, el aceptar una invitacin implica alguna responsabilidad.
