Collage Descriptions

Present Day Collage Images that represent social changes include Hurricane Katrina, going green, aiding people in poverty, abortion, the Unabomber, obesity, the earthquake in Japan, and gay rights. Going green caused people to change the way we live through new technologies, methods, and ideas in order to help the environment. New propositions for abortion and gay rights impacted the world by making people think differently and questioning previous laws. Helping people in natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Japan allowed people to reach out and assist others in need, which we also do in poor countries around the world. Images that represent political changes include healthcare, Obama being elected president, 9/11, the war in Iraq, the Berlin Wall being torn down, and the capture of Osama bin Laden. Obama being elected president impacted the world because he was the first black president and he brought new ideas, such as healthcare. Healthcare impacts the world because it would propose universal treatment in the US. The war in Iraq as well as the capture of Osama bin Laden

affected the world because they have caused much conflict, but at the same time have been used to help people in those countries. Images that represent economic changes include rising gas prices, conversion to Euros, the recession, the stock market crash, and foreclosure of homes. Rising gas prices impacted the world by making more people find alternative means of transportation. Conversion to Euros affected the world by creating a universal monetary system for Europe. The recession had a huge impact on the economy of the US, making many people lose their jobs and putting a lot of people out of their homes. Images that represent technological changes include 3D movies, new discoveries about our solar system, cell phones, the Hubble Telescope, Facebook (the Internet), and the advancement of computers after Y2K. 3D movies have appeared everywhere, and took the movie industry to a new level. Cell phones have revolutionized communication in the world today by making it very easy to get in touch with others. Facebook, as well as the Internet in general, has also made communication and staying in touch so simple. Information is able to spread very quickly so that everyone is informed.

Industrialization/Imperialism Collage Images that represent social changes include the Enclosure Act, the wealth of the middle class, women and children working, and labor unions. The Enclosure Act made people move from small farms to big, crowded cities. There middle class became very wealthy in comparison to the working class, and was in charge of all

the large factories. Women and children also began to work in order to make enough money for their families. Images that represent political changes include imperialism, alliances forming, and laissez-faire. Imperialism of other countries occurred because everyone wanted the natural resources of places like Africa and South America, as well as to keep up with other countries. Alliances formed because of this, which affects WWI later on. Laissez-faire also began when the government was letting people do what they want in the economy and not interfering. Images that represent economic changes include monopolies, triangular trade, the banking system, and inflation. Monopolies become widespread during industrialization, so some companies took over and dominated certain industries. Triangular trade was used during imperialism to exchange materials between America, Africa, and South America. Inflation occurred during the Industrial Revolution because prices were going up but wages were low. Images that represent technological changes include the light bulb, the steam engine, factories, the cotton gin, guns, the telephone, and steam ships. The steam engine allowed faster transportation across the US and, therefore, the faster spread of ideas and information. Factories were widely used during industrialization to provide a faster way of creating materials. Steam ships were used during imperialism to transport materials from continent to continent in Triangular Trade.
