English summary of speech Mr. Alvin Tugbo

Theses statement: Christianization developed the Philippine Baroque culture through the building of churches during Spanish colonization. Baroque is a period and the style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in architecture, sculpture, painting, literature, dance, and music. The style started around 1600 in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. One of the 3 main forms of Baroque: Baroque that was primarily associated with the religious tensions within Western Christianity -It a response in protestant reformation. Martin became disgusted by the Catholic Church's practice of selling indulgences. The purchase of an indulgence assures the buyer a remission of sins and thus a shorter period in purgatory. As part of the program, the Catholic Church used art of the magnificent display for the campaign. It was intended to emotional appealing so that it could influence the largest possible audience. The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia in the Western Pacific Ocean. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural resources and made it one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world. The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 Spanish colonization and settlement began with the arrival of Miguel Lpez de Legazpi's expedition on February 13, 1565 who established the first permanent settlement on the island of Cebu. The expedition continued northward reaching the bay of Manila, where they established a new town and thus began an era of Spanish colonization that lasted for more than three centuries. Missionary priests came to spread the Catholic faith. The introduction of Christianity was the biggest influence on Philippine culture by Spain. Christianization led to building of churches. Christian rituals called for interior dcor, statuary, paintings and liturgical music. Out of these religious needs developed Philippine fine arts, architecture, painting, sculpture and many more.

Being a predominantly Catholic nation, the Philippines boasts of many exquisite Baroque-style Catholic churches spread across its archipelago. These churches are remarkable for at least two reasons: (1) The churches are the reinterpretation of local Filipino craftsmen of the Baroque-style Catholic churches in Spain and its colonies in Latin America, which the craftsmen did not personally see but which they used as replicas for the churches they were building based on their indigenous knowledge of architecture. (2) The churches were built both to withstand (endure) assaults(attack) from revolting(rebel) locals against the abusive colonizers and to survive the Philippines strong earthquakes and typhoons that are typical in countries lying in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This architectural style eventually became known as Earthquake Baroque.
