Topic: A study of fuel efficient new serious petrol engine from Maruti Suzuki limited. Introduction
The automobile industry has been around for more than 100 years. The automotive industry is one of the biggest and fast growing in the world. In India the leading passenger car manufacturer is Maruti Suzuki ltd having 45% of market share. Maruti Suzuki has maintained their no.1 position by providing low cost fuel efficient vehicles. Maruti Suzuki has14 variety of passenger car models. Customer requirements are increasing from time to time, so to sustain in the market it is in evitable to design and manufacture fuel efficient engine. This topic is focused on Maruti Suzukis new serious fuel efficient petrol engines. The latest fuel efficient engines manufactured by Maruti Suzuki are Kseries petrol engine. It is fitted in the basic models such as Alto, Wagon R, Ritz, Swift, and Dzire. A-star and Estilo. In all the reports available in the electronic media the K-series engine is said to be much better fuel efficient petrol engine available in the market. Maruti has finally made a breakthrough in developing an engine suitable for low cost vehicles.

Fuel efficiency
The highlighting part of the K-series engine is it has improved fuel efficiency by 10% of which it gives 20.2kmpl. The highest among the A2segment. Fuel distribution is through multi point injection system with high pressure fuel system (maintaining 10:1compresion ratio) which takes the air fuel mixture separately to each cylinder. The multi point injection is controlled by ECU. The ECU takes reading of various sensors from the engine such as crank shaft sensor for knowing the position of the piston, the air flow sensor which measures the amount of air passing through the intake valve and adjusts the fuel to maintain the ratio of 14.7:1. The cylinder valve is operated by double over head cam shaft. There are 4valves per cylinder. For intake of air fuel mixture and for the exhaust. Normally more than 2 valves per cylinder are used to improve the flow of intake and the exhaust gases thereby improving combustion, power and performance. The Cam shaft is operated through silent timing chain which reduces the re-adjustment frequency. Ignition system is Smart Distributor Less Ignition (SDLI) system with dedicated plug top coils. The spark plug life is increased from 20,000kms to 40,000kms.

Emission
The performance of the engine cannot be stated without looking at Emission. The amount of pollutant that can be released into the atmosphere by an New series engine from Maruti Suzuki Page 2

automobile is controlled and strictly followed by the government. The company is the first to release automobile with BS IV standard norms.

Friction
Normally all the moving parts will have friction. Especially in engine the friction is more between piston and cylinder. The K-series engine is coated with a resin which helps to reduce friction and increase performance which in turn results is fuel efficiency.

Transmission
The 5 speed manual transmission controlled by cable wire for easy gear shifting. By eliminating livers for gear shifting the number of moving parts are reduced with helps in NVH reduction.

NVH
Noise and vibration is reduced in K-series engine by improving the stiffness in the engine and use of advanced technology like silent timing chain to improve NVH characteristics. Silent timing chain helps to drive the cam shaft.

Weight reduction
Unlike manufacturing the engine with the standard materials the company has used lighter weight aluminium for the entire engine. Weight reduction has taken place in both fixed and moving part of the engine. The fixed parts like the cylinder block or the engine block which is the most weighted part in the engine, the engine is designed in such a way that the New series engine from Maruti Suzuki Page 3

weight of the cylinder block is reduced substantially. The intake manifold is also a part which is mounted on the cylinder block which is usually aluminium or cast iron for low cost automobiles but it is made with plastic material. In the moving part of the piston skirt area is shortened to reduce the weight and increase the performance. When weight reduction takes place in the moving part it is a major improvement towards the performance of the engine and also it is applicable to all the products. And the Nut-less con rod (crank shaft without any fasteners) for light weight on functioning parts. Such major changes made in all the above mentioned parts have substantially reduces the weight of the engine. Once if the automobile weight is reduced then the power required to operate the automobile is reduced. This will directly improve the efficiency and the performance of the engine.

Conclusion
The K-series engine provides the best fuel efficient, high performance, low emission, light weight with lower noise vibration harness. As far as the first servicing is concerned, the spark plug life is increased from 20,000kms to 40,000kms and the first oil changing is required only after 15,000kms as of present automobiles it is 10,000kms average. Maruti has planned to take this technology to the entire variant which is in current use.
