Poem review: Bat by P.

Shultz
By Daniel
Formatted: (Asian) Chinese (Taiwan)

This poem is called bat Bat and is it written by an author called P. Schultz. This poems main subject is the authors son. This entire poem is an extended metaphor. The poem expresses the authorsauthors feelings and emotions and how the author feels about his son going out every night, the author prefers his son to sleep during the night and socialize with him during the day. The son on the other hand wants to chat with his friends and go to night clubs and hang out at night and party.

Comment [JH1]: Great introduction, but you need to include a thesis to show how the author uses, form, figurative language and mood to develop his ideas.

The poem called the Bat has a lot of figurative language, actually the whole poem is an extended metaphor. You can see this just by looking at the first sentence. My son is a bat, Tthis proves that the whole poem is an extended metaphor and the rest of the lines continue it. The poem expresses the follow up by saying things like; His eyes blink when darkness comes out and others like Attracted to false light. These basically mean he is attracted to night clubs and is always awake at night. The last line of the poem states that he sleeps all day, where he will sleep all day.

Comment [JH2]: Do you think it has a lot, or d you think the poem is just a long extended metaphor?

Comment [JH3]: You need to conclude your ideas here Daniel, why is the language important?

The body structure of this poem is especially made for an extended metaphor. This poem has noon rhyme because the poem is all describing how the authors son is a bat. There is no rhyme or repetition of syllables or specific sounds at the end of lines in this poem so this poem does not have any musical purpose or tune. Although this poem is just a metaphor there is an aspect of it where the author is telling a story. The poem tells up us how the authors son behaves and acts from when night starts to morning.

Comment [JH4]: Good, but what is the struct of the poem? How does this help the poem to be effective?

This poem has two very different types of moods. In this poem we have the author, and the authors son. The author is feeling sad and lonely, he wants to talk to his son, but he is always out at night clubs. The authors son is feeling as if he wants to chat with his friends and hang out with them, but spent less time with his father. We can find the moods of both these people by looking at a few lines; He mingles with his batty friends and His roof is the stars. These lines mean that the authors son is always outside and socializing with other people that are always awake during the night and sleeping during the day.

Comment [JH5]: Great example of the mood created for the son, but what are the lines that support how the father feels?

The author is writing this because he misses his son and that he misses the company of him. The author is concerned about the safety of his son and does not want him to go out every night to go out because the author does not know where or what he is doing. This shows that the son is happy, but the father is upset. The mood that the author expresses helps to emphasize this idea. I think that tThe author wants to know his son better and by comparing his son to a bat as thinking of a bat as a mysterious creature, the author thinks that he does not know his son and what he has been doing at night. Bibliography:

Comment [JH6]: Ok, I see here, but these ide need to be in one paragraph!

Comment [JH7]: Avoid informal language.

Comment [JH8]: Ok good start to your conclusion but you need to restated your thesis, how does the mood, structure, form and figurativ language help to make the poem effective?
