Dubai, a key destination for Austrian Airlines

Dubai: Austrian Airlines, which is celebrating the 15th anniversary of flying to Dubai this year, considers Dubai as an important destination in its Middle East strategy and plans to offer more services in days to come, its top official said on Tuesday. The Vienna-based airline, having a fleet of 82 aircraft, is planning to enhance the product portfolios, increase its focus on the corporate sector and improve cooperation with its partner, the Lufthansa Group, to provide better service to the travellers in the region. Austrian enjoyed a 45 per cent increase in passengers on its Dubai-Vienna route in 2010 over 2009, indicating a strong recovery from the international financial crisis. On March 27, 1996 the inaugural flight of Austrian from Vienna to Dubai was operated with a Boeing 737. Due to rising demand, the flight schedule has increased from one flight a week to one flight a day using Boeing 767 with 225 or 230 seats. Regarding introduction of flights to Abu Dhabi, the officials said that the airline was always evaluating new destinations.

UAE joins war against polio virus

Dubai: The UAE has joined hands with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in its campaign to save children's lives by combating polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Health, said yesterday. The two Asian nations still report a huge number of polio cases and face several other health challenges, Dr Hassan, who earlier opened a meeting of the WHO Regional Commission meeting for Polio Eradication, said. He said the partnership between General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been particularly notable for providing basic vaccinations that are critical to ending the disease's threat. Gates writes in his annual letter that: "Most people who live in rich countries assume the disease is long gone and that it doesn't kill or paralyze children anymore." Mass mobilizations to administer the polio vaccine had helped eliminate polio in the US and most developed nations decades ago, Gates notes. The campaign in developing nations, however, still faces a funding shortfall of over Dh2.5 billion, he pointed out.
