Misson, Approach and Layouts

Introduction

Our Misson

Encouraging the School of Thought

We believe that 3I Central should be a place where thoughts and can flow freely in a spirit that best encourages sharing, brainstorming and problem solving. By creating a space that is free-flowing and vivid in colour, we look to bring to the fore and draw parallels between the organic character of brainstorming and the setting. 3I Central is an accessible and incongruous place for officers and partners alike to share their ideas, past and present. The space will also contribute to enhancing the innovative culture of MHA and encourage pen communication between officers.

The Approach

Our Design Direction

The aim is to create a space that spurs innovative thinking and encourages a flow of ideas. One major impediment to the sharing of ideas and thoughts is the fear of said idea being inadequate. An approach to counter this would be to create a space that is open in concept, and to adorn the area with vivid colours that are similar to those found at a childs play area. The lack of physical boundaries within the space lessens the feeling of being boxed up and would stimulate creative and abstract thinking. Having an area within the space that exhibits ideas that have been adopted in varying degrees through the years would also promote sharing and appreciation.

Existing Layout

Assessment of the Existing Space

Although the current layout of 3I Central has worked well for some time now, the existing elements do not lend themselves well to the new proposed floor space, or new objectives for the space. Currently the elements limit the spontaneous flow of ideas, due to large numbers of partition walls, dividers etc. Redesigning allows the space to become a more collaborative environment.

New Layout

Proposed Zoning

The new space allocated allows for a smoother transition between areas, thus allowing the free-flowing concept to be adopted without much physical obstruction. Abstract representations of nature are integrated into the space in line with the idea of childhood and the organic growth of vegetation. Open in plan, users can look across the entire length of the space. Privacy is not compromised as curtains can be afforded to create more insular discussion areas. The Inspiration Gallery threads along the inner wall, spreading ideas across the entire layout.

The Entrance

Elevation Concepts
Visitors will come upon 3I Central and be greeted by artistic illustrations, drawings and inspirational quotes. This break from the design of a generic office building will immediately inform the visitor of the unique nature of the space, where thinking outside the box is encouraged.

The Lobby

Sketch Perspective and Concepts

The Lobby serves as the opening sequence to the melting pot of ideas within the space. The main holding area for partners and visitors, the Lobby is also the ideal place to introduce ideas that have been discussed and projects that have been undertaken by the Home Team officers. Bits of information and pockets of displays will bring forth the flow of ideas, and also showcase the creativity of the officers.

Hot-Desking

A Space for Quick and Easy Access to Resources

The Hot-Desking area is designed for Home Team officers to retrieve information easily via the Internet and Intranet. It is located in an unobtrusive corner and users can access information in private, from behind opaque glass panels.

Infinity Theatre

A Space for Unbounded Imagination and Immersive Experience

Taking up the largest area within 3I Central, the Infinity Theatre is large and expansive enough to cater for seminars, talks and presentations. The walls are modelled after curves and waves, organic in style and multi-functional it can double-up as a display and seating area. In line with the theme of nature and organic growth, projection screens are created to resemble trees. The flexibility of the space allows for rearrangement of certain furniture elements, giving more segregation to facilitate smaller group discussions.

3D Perspective Rendering: Roll-out Curtains

To create more privacy in the Infinity Theatre, a track curtain system can be introduced. Two roll-out curtains can be arranged in many configurations, enclosing the space and allowing more private discussions to take place.

Inspiration Gallery

A Space to Inspire and Promote Sharing of Ideas

The Inspiration Gallery is threaded throughout the inner walls of 3I Central. This element will allow for officers to take in the ideas as they walk around the area. The gallery will be presented as such in a less constricted and structured manner, giving a greater flow to the place. The space will showcase semi-permanent or short-term mini-expos of Home Team innovations, setting up a repository that allows for easy reference in future. Divisions or individuals can reveal the challenges they face in the course of their work and officers are then encouraged to contribute ideas.

Inquiry Area

A Space to Facilitate Problem Solving

The Inquiry Areas main objective is to create an environment that is conducive to problem solving and the generation of ideas. As such, the space is designed to be cosy and comfortable. Small groups of people would be able to lounge around and hold discussions, utilising boards and charts for brainstorming purposes. Two main areas are available for groups, one with more structured walls, allowing for more private in-depth discussions and a second with a more relaxed feel, encouraging better brainstorming and creativity.

Extras, Optionals and Furniture

Site Layout
Option B
For this option, the design of 3I Central as a whole stays relatively the same as the first. The addition of a wall and removal of the second Inquiry Area are the only changes to this design.

Off-site Inspiration Gallery

Optional Element
Located away from the 3I Central space, a secondary Inspiration Gallery follows the same organic, nature-inspired design as the main Inspiration Gallery.

29

Suggested Furniture
Inspiring Creativity
Another new and distinct feature to 31 Central would be the furniture used within the space. Further representations of nature and items found in a childs play area can be adopted and integrated into the open space. The innovative and atypical choice of furniture will add an element of fun to the space. Proposed ideas: Items like pencils and crayons can be used to create seating, or even display areas for the sharing of ideas Soft cushions made to resemble rocks and pebbles can adorn the lounge area to create a warm and cosy setting A mobile interactive screen, resembling a tree, can be placed against the wall within the Infinity Theatre to facilitate discussion, and double-up as a cover for doors leading to the store rooms. With wheels, it can be easily shifted to other areas if necessary.
