CERAMICS

Cinema Verite Hollywood films are too polished and overworked - often they lack the life and vigor of reality. Cinema Verit, the New Wave of film techniques and ideas from the 1960s, changed the world with gritty realism. Its time to change it again - like Goddard and Truffaut - with real, honest, storytelling. This class is open to actors and filmmakers. Age 16+ 5wk 9/12-10/10 M 5:45p-7:15p B. McManus $75 Screenwriting How did they write that snappy line of dialog? How do you know when one scene is over and the next one starts? Basic storytelling structure is the foundation of an excellent screenplay. Proper, industry standard formatting is essential for getting your script produced. Everyone has a story to tell, develop yours. Age 16+ 10wk 9/12-11/14 M 7:30p-9:00p B. McManus $150 Filmmaking for the Senses When you step into the art gallery, you see the autumn sun hanging heavy on a movie screen, and you smell freshly cut grass, and are offered a bite of watermelon. For a moment, you are transported by CityArts filmmaking for the senses class, back to your childhood. When film is created alongside sound, food, fragrances, and textures - its meaning is powerfully enhanced. No prior film experience required. Age 16+ Supply list: notebook, pens, pencils, etc. 5wk 9/13-10/11 Tu 7:30p-9:00p B. McManus $75 Basics of Filmmaking Every film starts with a good story, but it doesnt stop there. It has to be built, like a house, from the ground up. Have you ever wondered how a film is made? Learn the foundation for becoming a great filmmaker. Grow in your ability to tell stories from script to screen. Age 16+ Supply list: notebook, pens, pencils, etc. 10wk 9/14-11/16 W 5:30p-7:00p B. McManus $150 Contemplative Filmmaking Filmmaking could be described as the art of capturing time and light. Is sound as important as silence in a film? How does an image have meaning? What about film affects us emotionally? Contemplative filmmaking is a gentler and more generous approach to filmmaking, which explores the big questions in life. Age 16+ 10wk 9/14-11/16 W 7:30p-9:00p B. McManus $150 Stop Motion Animation Take ordinary objects like clay, and paper and make them come alive with stop-motion animation. Learn the techniques used in Wallace and Gromit, as well as by famous Czech animator Jan Svankmajer. Age 12+ (if signing up an adult and child combined price of $180) 7wk 10/13-11/17 Thu 6:30p-8:00p B. McManus $110 Editing Short Films The craft of editing, when done right, is invisible yet unmistakable. Find your own rhythm, and develop the skills you need to tell a story with shots. Draw on Eisensteins (Battleship Potempkin) theory of montage and McCuskers (3:10 to Yuma) mantra of the dance of eyes, and edit a short film into reality. Age 16+ 5wk 10/17-11/14 M 5:45p-7:15p B. McManus $75 Experimental Filmmaking World renowned experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage was from Kansas City. Experimental Filmmaker and multimedia artist Bruce Connor was from McPherson. Whos from Wichita? You are. Time to make an experimental film. Age 16+ Supply list: notebook, pens, pencils, etc. 5wk 10/18-11/15 Tu 7:30p-9:00p B. McManus $75
