111250 Home Nadine Gordimer I. Responses 1. Realistic story with natural reactions 2. Ironic relationship 3. Racial discrimination 4. Finding her home - comfortable place 5. Slow plot/extensive description and explanation 6. Different races causes different thinking - barrier to comfort 7. Numerous flashbacks with repetitions II. Key Elements 1. Character (Nils and Teresa) - Difference in races and culture affects their marriage since they dont understand each other because they grew up in different surroundings or environments - Textual evidence: the guy prefers not to do anything drastic about Teresas familys situation; he prefers to talk to officials rather than go there himself whereas the girl gives off hints that she wants to go there herself despite the danger, which happened in the end. 2. Setting - Era of Apartheid (which was introduced in the 1940s and lasted until 1994) - the setting affected the story because during that time, the government promote racial discrimination thus Teresa was brought up somewhat hating the people enforcing apartheid while at the same time fearing the things they could do to her and her family. In which case, Nils cannot relate to for he was not brought up in an environment where he had to fear for his life due to the color of his skin. 3. Plot - Chronological but with flashbacks concerning Teresas life in her hometown. - There were repeated statements which further stress the events in the story yet somehow also made the reader confused - Gives the readers an idea on who the characters are, how the characters think, and what they could possibly do in the succeeding paragraphs. For example, it was shown in the story that Teresa hated her mother due to her unfortunate childhood life but despite that, she still loves her mother that she would willingly go save her mother in spite of the dangers - It also showed the conflicts in the story (which is the key issues in the story) 4. Point of View - Third person limited - follows Nils in most scenes *events not involving Nils (or those nils cannot presently see) are not mentioned

III. Key Issues 1. Racial Discrimination - Due to Apartheid which makes the black citizens in South Africa slaves to the white minorities. 2. Description of home - A place where one feels comfortable. - The story showed that despite the many years Nils and Teresa are married, both still do not trust their wife/ husband enough which causes the tense air they have at home. ~ Nils shows his distrust to his wife when he started thinking that Teresa might have a different lover and is cheating on him. ~ Teresa shows her distrust to her husband when she does not consult him when she suddenly left to go save her family from the governments clutches. 3. Interracial marriage disadvantage - They suffer from prejudice of others - They suffer from differences between their cultures. 4. Effects of the Apartheid on the Africans - Segregation of races leading to discrimination. Information about Apartheid: A. Delivering Africans into the hands of white minorities (B. Davidson, The Black Mans Burden, 1992) B. Started in South Africa - African nationalists launch passive resistance to apartheid but draconian laws defeated it. C. Era of racial segregation and discrimination based on slavery/ on very cheap African labour (B. Davidson, Africa in History, 1988) D. Laws where made which prohibits marriage between non-whites and whites (M. Chokshi and company, The History of Apartheid in South Africa, 1995) E. In 1953, the Public Safety Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act were passed, which empowered the government to declare stringent states of emergency and increased penalties for protesting against or supporting the repeal of a law. The penalties included fines, imprisonment and whippings. (M. Chokshi and company, The History of Apartheid in South Africa, 1995)
