Board of Directors
EXECUTIVE BOARD Brenda Lemmon Minuteman Press of Butler Board Chair

ANNUAL CELEBRATE BUSINESS DINNER SEPTEMBER 15, 2010

Comments from the Chair
Good evening, and welcome to the Chambers Annual Dinner. In 2007, when I was asked to be 2nd Vice President of the Chamber Board, I knew that in three years I would be Chair. Honored and nervous, I set out to observe the individuals who chaired before me. I had excellent role models in Sherry Kyne, Tom Graham and last year, Jocelyn Howard Sinopoli, who on behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to recognize and thank for her dedicated service on the Board of Directors and as Board Chair in 2009. Jocelyns commitment to the Chamber, her commitment to the business community, and her genuine love of the City of Butler and Butler County shines through in everything she does. Its an honor to be following in her footsteps. First and foremost, I would like to thank you, our members, for your steadfast and loyal support of the Chamber, not just this past year, but for most of you over many years. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors and the past presidents for their support and guidance throughout this year. Jim Hackbart, our longtime Treasurer, retired from Chamber duty at the end of 2009. Id like to thank him for his many years of service. I would also like to thank Sherry Kyne who stepped forward to assume the Treasurer position this year. I would like to thank our Chamber staff, Jennifer and Bobbi Jo, who continue to support the Chamber with their positive and upbeat attitudes, their efficiency, and their amazing work capacity. And, of course, Id like to thank Stan, who is making my job as Chair so easy. Abraham Lincoln once said, Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. Its the words that speak boldly of your intentions, and the actions which speak louder than the words. Its making time when there is noneits coming through time after time, year after year. Commitment is the stuff characters made ofthe power to change the face of thingsthe daily triumph of integrity over skepticism. Our Chamber has been doing just that - transforming promises into reality, coming through time after time, year after year. We are consistent, reliable, but ever evolving. Under Stans expert leadership and vision, we have continued to support and promote our member businesses in a variety of ways. Stan has developed excellent working relationships with our surrounding Chambers as evidenced by the ever popular networking mixers we have held in Slippery Rock, Foxburg, and Seven Fields. These events make it easy for our members to meet new people in a relaxed and fun setting, giving them opportunities to expand their business across county lines. We have also continued to offer affordable educational opportunities through our Lunch n Learn series. And this fall we are offering two excellent workshops from Sandler Training. In Lincolns quote, he says commitment has the power to change the face of things. I cant think of better examples of changing the face of things than Leadership Butler County, Butler Downtown and the Unified Plan. Tomorrow, our Leadership program begins its 19th class year. This program continues to build community leaders by teaching them about our County and how their leadership skills can help to make our County a better place to live, work and play. Many of these individuals have taken active volunteer roles in various community organizations. This programs reputation is so solid; we have a waiting list of 20 men and women for next years class before this years class has even begun. Butler Downtown has been working tirelessly and we are beginning to see the fruits of their labor. In January 2010, the City of Butler implemented a Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance, or LERTA, ordinance. Butler Downtown is currently working with the County of Butler and the Butler Area School District to adopt the LERTA ordinance as well. This summer we had bike rides, walking tours, and Centre City summer jam concerts. Weve watched as beautiful murals are being painted on the sides of our buildings. Weve recently had some of the downtown streets painted with the shared-lane markings to indicate travel lanes shared by bicyclists and other vehicles. Currently Butler Downtown is waging a campaign to Help Save the Bantam Building as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservations This Place Matters Community challenge. The Chamber has been a driving force behind the Unified Plan. In 2009, Phase I of the plan was completed by a task force appointed by the Butler County Board of Commissioners. This task force helped to develop and implement a unified plan for community and economic development for Butler County. Through the development of a key set of recommendations, Phase II plans to: 1) establish a process for coordination and cooperation of stakeholders so we can speak as one, much more powerful, voice when approaching State and Federal officials with regard to County investment needs; 2) establish a process to prioritize and advance critical infrastructure in the County such as roads, sewer & water, and broadband; 3) help business recruitment and retention activities; and 4) formalize a business support infrastructure. So this is how you change the face of thingsby committing to the development of leaders through a Leadership program, by committing to revitalizing downtown through a Main Street program, by committing to bringing key stakeholders in the County together, to sit down at the same table, and begin implementing a unified plan to move forward for the betterment of our County. And your Chamber is right there leading the way - helping to address the issues of our business community. Tonight we are here to pay tribute to a long-standing Butler County-based financial institution, NexTier Bank. And we are honoring our winners, Tom and John Buckner of Ibis Tek, the Butler Eagle, and the Butler Health System. I would like to personally congratulate our winners and I look forward to their award presentations later this evening. In closing, I thank you again for your continued support of the Chamber. I hope you will tell every non-member you know how much the Chamber is doing for our business community and encourage them to become members.
