PERFORMATIVE INTERACTIONS: INNOVATION, CREATIVITY & ENTERPRISE - ALL TOGETHER....

Could a normal conference have the same profound impact what the LMAI conference achieved? The answer was a unanimous NO. Organised on the lines of the AFTA conference held every year in various locations in Asia, the LMAI conference welcomed a range of prestigious speakers from some of the worlds biggest brands to Goa. The conference not only brought in International experts to discuss case-studies and throw some light on success stories and best practices, but also brought the entire industry together to celebrate and cheer as one Global Family. A report he Indian label industry scenario is one of the best success stories ever written or told. This fast growing industry that has evolved in this last decade and reached staggering heights is not just a simple success story. But a story of grit and determination to reach heights and achieve world level standards in whatever it does. Call it the power of integrity and hardwork. This same camaraderie was seen at the Innovations Unlimited conference held at Hotel Park Hyatt in Goa, this July end. Organized by Label Manufacturers Association of Indias (LMAI), this conference was one of the best networking sessions ever organized by any association in the Indian printing industry. And what a conference it was! Something that caught everyone by surprise as not only it was aided with power packed sessions imparting

knowledge but equally enthralling were the fun-filled networking session sessions that winded up way into the night; bringing the industry much closer than it was ever before. The due credit for such a wonderful conference cum networking session goes to the LMAI team headed by President Vivek Kapoor and equally supported by Sandeep Zaveri, Amit Sheth, Ajay Mehta, Ajay Agarwal, Harveer Sahni

and the rest of the organizing team. The LMAI that had been toying with the idea of holding a conference for long time were really apprehensive of the response that would be meted out to them. And hence had targeted the number of delegates at a modest 125 and booked the hotel rooms accordingly. However, a targeted approach by the whole team coupled with the event organizers and media support not only hyped up the conference but found new takers too. Says Harveer Sahni of Weldon Celloplast: When the event was conceptualized, the LMAI team was very optimistic and eager to hold the conference at Goa. As we came closer to the date of the event it became a little uneasy situation as even the event managers had not been finalized. Somewhere around the end of January 2011, Vivek Kapoor the LMAI President pressed the panic button. What followed was a concentrated build up to an amazing event. Vivek called all in his team across India daily and talked for hours. All of us still joke - Vivek has free telephone lines. The team gelled together, worked hard and what evolved months later will be a part of history of label in this country. Such was the impact that not only the whos who of the label industry had sent in their confirmations, but more people were interested to be a part of the event. The organizers on their hands now had a gigantic task as the figures rose from 125 to 160 to later 220 to finally settle at 270! Whoa!! The event was already a hit even before it started. Since the venue couldnt accommodate all of them together at one place, nearby properties were booked. And though it was quite a distance from the main venue, none of the guests were complaining. Neither did the delegates complain of having to attend the conference session immediately after registration for presentations at the conference hall. Curtain raiser was a Bang On The high-level LMAI conference took off post lunch on the 29th July with a welcome note by Vivek Kapoor who welcomed all the delegates to the conference. And since we all talk of the Indian success story, Ajay Mehta of SMI Coated Products gave a presentation on good entrepreneurship skills. He was followed by Jean Pierre DeMoor VP Esko Artwork on Security designs and anti-counterfeit techniques and Boon Chai Tan of DuPont Packaging who discussed on the New techniques in plate making technologies and HD Flexo. He also spoke on how DuPont is working closely with EskoArtwork

benefits of HD Flexo with digital DuPont Cyrel to give unsurpassed sharpness and detail, fine highlights and vignettes and enhanced solid ink density. With HD Flexo, the flexo converter will notice many significant advantages; especially the sharp detail in plates and high quality text and line art. With an exceptional dot structure and extraordinary screening, tints are smoother and easier to print. Meanwhile, there is a smooth vignette transition throughout the highlights to zero and a high contrast in highlights and shadows without visible, hard edges. After the hard hitting sessions clustered with mind boggling details and knowledge on innovative developments in the field, the delegates were now ready for something entertaining to unwind. There was suspense in store. No one could even wildly imagine that LMAI will be arranging for some mind blowing performances by African drummers from the group Drum Caf to bring in power, passion and energy to the event. As one might be aware of, the drum is an ancient tool of communication and community building among many other cultures around the world. Yes, before any major tribal decision were made, the community gathered together at the centre of the village to make music. This joyous making of music broke down barriers and created a sense of Said Sheetal Mishra, Business Manager Flexo Image Graphics: The program was so nice, it transported me to Africa for some time. I enjoyed it very much and I had a wonderful time. Added Amitabh Luthra of Printers Supply Co. Kolkata: With the entire auditorium drumming to one beat, Innovations Unlimited has caught everyone unawares and surprised all present out here. I should say, this is a fabulous start to a great conference. The enthusiasm amongst all the delegates was very high and the session was successful beyond our expectations cheered Ajay Mehta of SMI and a core LMAI Team member. The sudden start and stop technique worked as a booster and a revitaliser as our minds stared feeling the rhythm! added a delegate. Yes! Even I feel so as these Drum Sessions not only sparks creativity but also promotes creative or out-the-box thinking as the Left and right brain are used simultaneously, said another. This drumming session winded up when the bar was thrown open and delegates and guests kept enjoying till late at night. Learning and insight Day two of the conference had two sessions pre-lunch and two sessions post-lunch. Though the delegates winded quite late at night, yet they were fully present to catch the first paper of the day. The first session of the day started with the opening address by Sandeep Zaveri the Co-Chairman of the LMAI conference committee and YMC President. Bhrigav Jain of Monarch Graphics followed him speaking on the latest technologies related to intermittent presses on behalf of Label Planet. In-depth conference presentations were delivered by highprofile experts following him including a presentation on New flexo technology drives lean manufacturing and sustainability by Jeff Feltz of Mark Andy. Just before the coffee break was called, Federico dAnnunzios presentation on Flexo v/s Digital was one worth noting as it imparted more knowledge on the

unity, thus enabling communities to become more effective in their decision-making. As the African drummers on stage started to hammer on the skins of their drums, a hall fully packed with delegates that belonged to the Indian label fraternity quickly reached an Alpha state, relieving their stressful journeys (if any) hitting the drum placed squarely in the here and now. Initially confused with what to do with the drums given to them, the delegates readily became involved in the drumming, turning the tables from the expected environment of spectator / performer to an interactive environment where the lines between spectator and performer merged.

with a discussion by Itsik Krief, Global head (label solutions) HP on The Digital Challenge: When and how to go digital. He reiterated that digital printing offers print quality as good as or better than flexo, while making it possible to quickly adapt labels and packaging for seasonal promotions, etc. Panel discussion on presses One of the most looked forward to debate was the Panel discussion on presses headed by Roger Pellow, MD - Labelexpo Group and included all the major press manufacturers on one dias. They provided more ideas and insights as well as cleared the airs and doubts of the printers on the kind of presses that would suit their style of business. This panel discussion was the most sought after especially to those who were looking at investing in new and advanced range of presses to accelerate their growth. Materials, Consumables, Liners and siliconising Post tea break, the session focused on post production and finishing with a paper by Keith Montgomery of ABG on Digital web finishing including Braille and booklets, to later move into Stamping foils decoration and brand protection by Wolfgran Buckard of Kurz who adhered that stamping foils are not only used for branding, decoration and security purpose but they create a strong anticounterfeit barrier besides enhancing the brand equity of the product. George Lyle of Flint Group in his presentation on New technologies in Ink gave more insights into the world of inks. The final and the last paper in the series were presented by Michael Bethge of Ahlstrom on Efforts,

Digital - Flexo Concept from Gidue -The new benchmark for the labels and packaging industry. Delegates to the second session pre-lunch got to hear a presentation on Innovative packaging and improving brand security, brand awareness and functionality by Andrew Crawford of Avery Dennison. Kishor Sarkar of Gallus offered an insightful presentation on the Threats and opportunity of self adhesive label applications. After him, Dilip Shah of Nilpeter delved into the Advantages of using combination presses and related technologies. In absence of Rotatek Vice President Gaetan De Charry who was supposed to be speaking on New technologies in intermittent converting, Ranesh Bajaj of Creed Engineers took the position and presented the paper before the lunch break was called. The post lunch session started off

challenges and tasks of the recycling of siliconised liner. The Label industry has been struggling with this concern for years. This was well tackled in this paper. Party time and a time to say goodbye As all good things come to an end, even this interactive conference concluded with a vote of thanks by Ajay Agarwal, Chairman of the LMAI Conference Committee. It was time to party yet again. The delegates were given two hours to rest and change into casual attires while the event managers Pooja Ghai and her Tranquil World team got busy in resetting the venue from the drab conference look into something sensational for the evening. When the guests returned to a new setting in the hall, it was time for the awards for the sponsors before the

When I took over as President of the association, LMAI had hardly 40 members. Due to many such initiatives by the entire team today, not only has the membership grown to 280 but seems certain that this list will continue to grow rapidly. In the run-up to its various initiatives, LMAI also established a global young label leaders network to promote the sharing of ideas and information amongst this segment headed by Sandeep Zaveri as President and has been termed successful. Today, LMAI is also recognized globally and is a part of the L8 team that established a framework for the exchange of association information, regional market data and general information about the narrow web industry, signed off Vivek.

For paper and transparent substrates, the electronic web guide comes equipped with ultrasonic sensor for easy process as well as the IR cell for counting with silk spot labels. While the touch-screen monitor guarantees ease-of-use, a selfdiagnostic software informs the user about any specific stops or problems. Consistent growth aided by Prati investment Webtech has grown to become one the largest manufacturers of selfadhesive labels in India. Chhajed comments: We purchased a Mark Andy in a Print exhibition almost on an impulse and the machine was just sitting around in our factory for the next six months. Then I learnt to operate the machine myself, as there were no skilled operators available. At that time Elf lubricants was screenprinting on its plastic containers. We convinced them to use sticker labels. Today many of the automotive oil companies in addition to most of the pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies are our clients. We have added roughly one printing machine every year since inception and have one of the largest manufacturing capacity for self adhesive sticker labels in the sub continent. Passion for Labels The self adhesive label specialist provides specialty and customized labels including high security and anti counterfeit solutions and Chhajed adds: The label industry has become a passion and now our goal is to rapidly expand operations to more locations within and outside India. DIGICON LITE IS THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR SIMPLE CONVERTING NEEDS..

B Graphic International has announced the sale of an Omega Digicon Lite finishing line to The Label Makers, Bradford. The system will join a range of existing label converting and finishing lines supplied by AB Graphic International over recent years and will be used to take simple jobs from the companys recently installed, high performance, Omega Digicon Series 2 machine. The high specification Omega Digicon Series 2 is equipped with flat bed hot foiling, cold foiling, embossing, screen module and two UV flexo units. These enable the production of a wide range of decorative labels, but make basic jobs less practical. The Digcon Lite will be used to convert simple label jobs for food, food supplements, toiletries and drinks such as those used by micro breweries and free up the high

specification model for more sophisticated work. The Omega Digicon Series II line is h i g h l y specified and this is fantastic for high embellishment drinks and cosmetics labels, but we have a large number of jobs that only require a varnish and die cutting, explains David Webster, Managing Director of The Label Makers. The Digicon Lite has a much shorter web path which means more cost effective production. This coupled with its quick set-up and slitting facilities make it a very good finishing machine. The Digicon Lite combines all the basic functions required for

t the Package Printing Zone, organized by Tarsus in Hall 12 during LabelExpo 2011, Nuova Gidue S.r.l. unveils the new Food Packaging Program for UV Flexo developed to support label converters in their introduction into the flexible packaging industry. Federico dAnnunzio, MD, discloses the recent installation at a major label converter in Italy of a new Master M5 630 Digital Flexo press, in line with a totally new development from Gidue, the Master SL 630 Solvent-Less Laminator. The combination of UV Flexo and in-line solvent-less lamination is potentially revolutionary for the flexible packaging market. Our solution avoids any contact of UV inks with the reel (and with the food), by protecting the UV printed surface with a laminated film before rewinding. Risks of UV ink migration are virtually eliminated. In particular label converters, who know UV flexo technology since years, could enter the lucrative short-runs flexible packaging market, with a limited learning curve, providing excellent UV flexo print quality. The Food Packaging Program for UV Flexo developed by Gidue reduces the need of entry legal and laboratory costs for food acceptance certifications. It also increases the overall converting productivity with a all-in-one-pass printing and laminating process (over 70% of food packaging is laminated). The new Master SL 630 solventless laminator has been developed

focusing on short set up times, automated operations, quick change of the lamination roller, servo driven bicomponent mixing, semiautomated linear pre-web guide, to enhance the in-line productivity of the Master M5 630 Digital Flexo press. Mr. dAnnunzio concludes:it could take some time, but the combination of the Master M5 630 UV flexo press in-line with the Master SL 630 solventless laminator is a serious opportunity for label converters looking at new areas of growth. Label converters could start one step ahead by entering the flexible packaging industry, introducing the narrow web established culture of shortruns efficiency, high print quality and creativity. Nuova Gidue S.r.l. will present live at LabelExpo, Hall 12 Booth 100-110, three new flexographic press lines (Combat M1, Combat M3, Master M5) and one platform with offset modules (Xpannd M7) for the labels and packaging industry.

mart Papers recently announced that its Kromekote Label 60-lb. IN-fusion premium lightweight cast-coated label and packaging papers are now RIT certified to run on HP Indigo WS4050, WS4500 and WS6000 label and packaging presses. Kromekote cast gloss is the first lightweight cast-coated paper to be performance certified by RIT for use on HP Indigo narrow web presses. The newly certified products are Kromekote Label for cut and stack glue-applied labels as well as Kromekote Label Converting for pressure-sensitive label applications. The certification from the RIT Printing Applications Laboratory is important for HP Indigo narrow web press owners in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific because, for the first time, they now have access to premium, high-gloss cast-coated label stock optimized and certified for their equipment. This gives HP Indigo press owners the ability to expand their offering to customers and win new sales and profit opportunities. Pressure sensitive label converters must still qualify their own p/s label

constructions with RIT. Smart Papers said it would provide R&D support to key converting customers. Smart Papers is one of the worlds top producers of premium high-gloss cast-coated printing papers. Kromekote Label coated one-side (C1S) applications include standard cut and stack label, wrap or packaging applications and pressure sensitive label stock. RIT is the worlds top printing test laboratory that certifies printing papers for use on digital printing presses. The Kromekote Label IN-fusion certification gives HP Indigo owner/operators, specialty label and packaging printers, converters and paper/packaging distributors confidence that Kromekote Label performs well on press. The results were very good and this is a very good product for specialty label and packaging printers, said Tim Richardson, digital printing technologist at RIT and the chief tester of Kromekote Label. There are no concerns with this product on any front. In addition to providing a new option for label and packaging printers, this development is important for pressure sensitive label converters, explained Paul Simpson, executive vice president for SMART Papers. HP Indigo paired with Kromekote IN-fusion produces a compelling label solution for label and packaging printers, converters and distributors. RIT put Kromekote Label 60-lb. TASA (Industrias de Transformacin de Andoain), an independent producer of siliconised release liner in Spains Basque country, is investing strongly in more capacity, optimal manufacturing and finishing quality, and better logistics. New coater: Following the installation of a custom-built, high-speed 2.3M-wide BMB coater in 2008, the company has just installed its twin a new BMB 1.65M-width coater, capable of running at 800 metres per minute, which is now beginning production trials. This brings ITASAs coating capacity to four machines, supported by advanced automatic silicone mixing. Finishing: Complementing the coating capacity are a selection of slitters at 2.3M and 165mm widths, plus a new machine capable of slitting narrow-width rolls down to just 20mm and, since around 20% of ITASAs production requires a customer logo, two printing machines: one inline, which offers the best cost/performance solution for volume production; and one offline. Coating capabilities: With ITASAs current coating capability, high-speed coating of all types of paper release base is possible, from 30gm2 up to 200 gm2 krafts, PE coateds, clay coateds, C1S and C2S, with equal or differential release characteristics, to meet the needs of a variety of tape, labelstock, industrial, and composite applications as well as self-adhesive graphic arts (at the highest gram weights) and envelopes and hygiene (at the lowest gram weights). Current production capacity: CPC is 450 million M2 per annum which, with the commissioning of the new coater, will be closer to 600 million M2. 80% of the companys production is exported 50% within Europe, and the balance in the USA, Mexico, and Asia. New warehousing facility: The company is additionally currently in the process of completing a major extension to their building in Andoain, to create a total of 6,500M2 of dedicated raw material and finished goods storage an increase of nearly 50%. The project has involved building a special protective retaining wall, since the site is on the side of a hill, as well as a massive underground water tank with associated sprinkler system to meet the requirements of the EU safety regulations. Together with the new machinery, this represents a 20 million investment. Founded in 1974 by two local families, ITASA has built an admirable reputation as a relevant and reliable supplier in the paper-based release liner market.www.itasa.es

tlantics Zeisers wealth of technological expertise is helping label printers create a highly competitive and responsive offering. At LabelExpo 2011, Brussels, Atlantic Zeiser will focus on the flexible adoption of the Drop-onDemand (DoD) Inkjet-Technology while printing variable data on different label substrates and -formats. At booth R95 in hall 11 it will highlight its versatile drop-ondemand (DoD) inkjet printing technology in security and commercial label printing of variable data on different substrates and formats via its integrated DIGILINE Web 300 platform. Other production possibilities being demonstrated will include the high-speed DELTA 105i greyscale printer outputting from roll to roll equipped with a VERICAM camera-based verification system guaranteeing zero-defects in the end product. It will print and code, from the roll, industrial labels from its partner, 3M as well. With a GAMMA 70 P full-colour module for CMYK inkjet printing, the DIGILINE will also produce industrial labels for another self-adhesive 3M high-performance film. 3M Partnership Success: Paramount in high quality label production is the choice of substrate which is why Atlantic Zeiser has partnered with world leading 3M and received particular certification for use of its printing modules and inks on different foils and products. Not only does this certification guarantee performance quality but it also highlights the variety of end results possible helping printers add value. 3Ms portfolio includes white and silver polyester films resistant to media and friction with matte or gloss surface coatings, which are ideal for digital UV inkjet printing. Their exceptionally high resistance to ageing makes them the perfect label materials, as they are able to withstand most chemical reactions. The challenge for Atlantic Zeiser is how to permanently print the necessary information on these adhesive substrates. To be able to guarantee performance 3M also subjects selected printing technologies to these approvals. This enables the company to offer combination options for films, printing processes and inks that label and equipment manufacturers can rely on. Think Ink: Atlantic Zeisers combination of specially developed inks and environmentally friendly UV-LED curing is virtually unbeatable. With its own inhouse ink development and production departments, it has considerable expertise, particularly with challenging surfaces offering low ink adhesion. Also developed in-house with the label market in mind is the SmartCure AIR and SmartCure UV-LED curing system series for virtually every printing width and printing speed.

The cost-saving systems cure UV inks in an environmentally friendly manner thanks to their low energy consumption, absence of ozone emissions and their operating life that outlasts lampbased systems by a factor of one to ten. The curing systems are formulated to the flexible printing systems Omega, Delta and Gamma families. Together these technologies offer printers competitive and reliable solutions to meet the increasingly high performance criteria end-users expect of their labels. Cost efficiency benefits: All Atlantic Zeiser solutions deliver outstanding efficiency and the ability to switch quickly between print jobs to enable users to exploit new business opportunities in a host of industry applications. Designed for maximum flexibility essential in label printing, they ensure all the required information is clearly printed on the material while delivering utmost ink durability, light-fastness and contrast. But it is the high level of security delivered by coding of security labels like tax and excise stamps and the track & trace features that enable operations to deliver an integrity assured service. At the event Atlantic Zeiser will also demonstrate how to code tax labels and excise stamps with common, individual barcodes and plain-text information at speeds of up to 150 m/min. At the same time it will address the challenge of printing the absorbent special paper for tax labels at maximum speed with outstanding image quality, so the variable data is easily read for goods identification. All standard product tracking codes from GS1, all types of numeric codes, and 1-D and 2-D barcodes can be included to check the legitimacy of the packaging and product online. And the Vericam high-speed camera system automatically reads and verifies the selected layout and checks the digits. If the check code does not match the reference data, the module rejects the product. Typical applications include quality control of any font, bar codes 1D/2D, numbering and conformity. Codes for goods tracking and batch identification as well as production, usage and expiry data change frequently. This means the content of the print layout has to be modified regularly, so the printing technology must offer maximum variability in setting the print data. It is this comprehensive array of requirements that greatly restricts the technical printing solutions that can be used. The most cost-effective and versatile print technology is industrial DoD inkjet digital printing. Atlantic Zeisers Vice President Digital Systems Ralf Hipp comments: In such a diverse and competitive market Atlantic Zeiser has created a portfolio of solutions that can meet even the most exacting requirements and all to a very high quality. No matter what the application end-users can be assured of the integrity and security provided by these reliable and responsive solutions.

he worldwide debut of the VIVA 340 Aniflo will be presented with 5 colors plus varnish and will run 4 jobs every day, to highlight the print consistency and also to show how easy a color proof can be produced. Codimag will organize the same presentations as they did 2 years ago where they will have a plate making facility on the booth with the Agfa Avalon N4 CtP system and the Toray plate processor. With the trend toward shorter and shorter runs, intermittent presses with quick set-up, no cylinder changes and pre-press limited to plate making are getting more and more suitable for the market. The VIVA340 is a modular press that can be specified according to customers needs. The VIVA340 is one of the very few intermittent presses on the market with all the major printing or finishing processes in line in intermittent mode: Waterless offset, Letterpress, Screen-printing, Hot Foil Stamping, Embossing, Flexo Varnishing, Wet Laminating, Die-Cutting. All labels from simple 4 colours label to the very appealing labels for wine or cosmetics can be printed in line in one pass on the press. Intermittent feed for short and medium run: On the VIVA340 any print length from 5" to 12" can be printed without cylinder change thanks to the intermittent technology and servo control of the web motion. As a result the press is perfect for short and medium run with short make ready and minimal waste. The main printing technologies used on the VIVA340 for 4-colour-process are offset and letterpress. Both processes allow a high level of flexibility on the press. Unlike Flexo, those print techniques do not rely on anilox rol for ink volume and do not require plate mounting with double sided tape. Pre-press is limited to only plate making. With intermittent press the only job-dependent component is the plate. You can stay away from costly tools or cassettes for every format. The VIVA 420 Aniflo will also be presented in combination with hot-foil, probably with a wine label design. The ANIFLO print system is unique to Codimag with an anilox roller feeding a form roller which inks the waterless plate before printing on a blanket and then the web. Codimag also decided to organize some promotion around waterless offset technology, together with Toray. Codimag will have a brochure available, dedicated to Toray and Codimag to show their involvement in waterless offset. Toray will be present in the booth and will display different materials and applications printed in waterless offset: plastic cards, in-mould labels, commercial printing, and newspaper printing Le Figaro, the first French newspaper to be printed waterless offset on a KBA Cortina press will be distributed in the booth every day. This is all to show customers that waterless offset is not only Codimag, but also many other users. Toray will continue to supply waterless offset plates and to develop waterless offset technology. Codimag will be in attendance at Label Expo 2011 in booth 3429, which is being held in Brussels this year. TORAY ANNOUNCES LABELEXPO PARTNERSHIP

Waterless platemaking specialist Toray Industries and intermittent feed presses manufacturer Codimag will combine their expertise at Labelexpo to showcase a range of optimized flexible print production solutions for label and packaging markets.

quipped with Toray plate processing capabilities Codimags VIVA 340 will run four jobs a day to highlight live changes, proof-matching and day-today reproducibility while the VIVA 420 will run one job per day in combination with hot-foil. Both will feature the innovative Aniflo unit (keyless anilox offset) that offers a predictable and repeatable print system, for reliable colour management. The event will also showcase various applications of waterless offset in the high-end label and packaging markets from labels, plastic card printing, CD/DVD printing, security printing, packaging up to newspaper printing. This includes the daily distribution of Le Figaro, the first French newspaper printed waterless offset on a KBA Cortina press, and also De Morgen printed by Eco Print Center on 12-tower KBA Cortina waterless press - both using Toray plates. Pascal Duchne, Managing Director at Codimag, comments: As a press manufacturer, Codimag has been active in waterless offset technology for label printing since 1999. We are convinced that this technology brings many advantages to our customers. Printing labels inline in one pass improves register between the processes and reduces time and material lost in second or even third passes while optimizing productivity. Codimags intermittent feed presses work with all sizes without the need to change cylinders or rollers while enabling fast make ready, low waste

and high productivity. As for the Toray relationship at Labelexpo he adds: We are very pleased to work in partnership with Toray and show how the waterless world is much broader than label printing, with high quality newspaper, plastic card or commercial printing also achievable. Founded in 1978 by Mr. Tison and Mr. Demol, Codimag began by manufacturing CODA a semi-rotary press for the business form market that later expanded into three different versions. In the early 90s these were joined by a semi-rotary press for the self adhesive label industry. In 1993 the first VIVA 300 was installed, primarily as 4-colour UV letterpress machine, and then as 6color machine. In 1997, the VIVA 300 naturally became the VIVA 340, to reflect higher productivity thanks to a maximum printing area of 305 mm by 340 mm. Wet lamination, hotfoil stamping, screen-printing were added. In 1999 the VIVA 340 became available in waterless offset. The higher quality, in terms of fine dots, high screen ruling, and fine vignettes, especially on textured materials, such as vellum or linen papers soon opened up markets in wine, cosmetic and food labels. Codimag has now more than 300 VIVA presses installed in Europe, Brazil, South Africa, North America, Russia and Europe. Toray Industries Inc., the leading manufacturer of waterless printing plates world wide, has a global presence with factories and sales offices in Asia, Europe and America.

XEIKON COMES OUT ON TOP OF LIGHT FASTNESS BENCHING EXERCISE

Visitors to the Xeikon stand will have the opportunity to see a new version of Xeikons QA-I toner in spot red and orange at Labelexpo Europe 2011. They will also get to see the results of a recent light fastness benchmarking test, which confirms Xeikon as the best performing digital printing technology on the market.

eikon will launch a new version of its QA-I toner in spot red and orange at Labelexpo Europe 2011. The new spot colors feature a vastly improved light fastness up to a level of 6 on the blue wool scale. In addition, both colors now meet FDA food safety requirements for both direct and indirect dry food contact. Visitors to the Xeikon stand will also have the opportunity to see for themselves the results of a recent light fastness benchmarking test, which confirms Xeikon as the best performing digital printing technology on the market. When Xeikon first released the QA-I toner at IPEX 2010, it raised the bar of digital color print toners to new heights. Uniquely developed for the label and packaging market, the new toner featured major advances in color gamut, fast lightness and food safety. It was released in all the standard CMYK process colors along with a series of off-the-shelf spot colors (orange, green, red, blue, extra magenta, clear and white). At the time, however, the performance of spot orange and red lagged slightly behind the rest of the family in both

light fastness and food safety. Since that initial release, the toner R&D group at Xeikon has continued to optimize the pigments used in the toner and have now lifted both colors up to be in line with Xeikons traditionally high standards. Red and orange are both used a lot in the chemical industry, says Filip Weymans, Marketing & Business Development Manager, Labels & Packaging at Xeikon. For example: Warning signs placed on the outside of large drums carrying potentially dangerous contents typically use these two colors and they are often exposed to UV light for long periods of time. With the light fastness of both colors now lifted to 6 on the blue wool scale, labels created with QA-I toner can easier meet the demanding requirements of this market. During the same period, the R&D team also focused heavily on improving the food safety performance of the two QA-I spot colors. When first released, they met the FDA requirements for indirect food contact. By optimizing the color pigments, they now meet FDA requirement for both indirect and direct dry food contact. The new release of QAI toner in both spot red and orange will start shipping as from Labelexpo Europe 2011 (i.e. from 1 September 2011). The raised performance of both light fastness and food safety of the two spot colors now enables label printers to broaden the range of applications they can offer, adds Weymans. Xeikon comes out on top of light fastness benchmarking exercise Visitors to Labelexpo Europe 2011

will also be able to observe first hand the results of a benchmarking exercise that was conducted recently between different digital printing technologies. During the exercise, which was carried out by an independent printer, three identical labels were printed on the same material using three different technologies: UV inkjet, liquid toner and Xeikons dry QA-I toner. Each label, lying side-by-side, was exposed to 800 hours of sunshine during the 4 months of April to August this year. The deltaE, which is the unit of measure of color difference, was measured for seven different colors of each label. At the end of the 800 hours, the deltaE of the Xeikon printed sample was significantly less across all seven colors. The results clearly reaffirmed Xeikons high standard of quality in light fastness with an average deltaE of 7.6. This compared to 12.2 for inkjet-printed label and 37.3 for the alternative liquid toner technology. Xeikon will exhibit at Labelexpo Europe 2011 in Hall 9, Stand 45. The company will showcase an impressive line-up of five solutions dedicated to the digital label printing market, including digital label presses, converting lines and integrated software. On the stand there will be live demonstrations of a wide web label solution with its Xeikon 3500, the most productive digital label press available on the market. The show will also mark the launch of the DCoat500, which will be showcased in World Premiere as the in-line finishing solution of the Xeikon 3500. A pioneer in digital printing, Xeikon designs, develops and delivers high-end digital colour printing systems for the industrial, document and commercial printing market segments. These systems are composed of advanced web-fed printing engines using LED-arraybased, dry toner electro-photography, open workflow software, exclusive toner and other consumables. Xeikons production and R&D operations are based in Belgium and its solutions are distributed and supported through a worldwide network.

design detail are standard requirements on printing jobs. ClearLogic, the user interface, features user-friendly screens that require fewer touches, removing much of the complexity potentially involved in the set-up process. The packagingspecific software accompanying the system is compatible with a wide range of materials and die-cutting processes. This is highly beneficial to a company like Positive Packaging, which converts many opaque, transparent and reflective substrates, such as BOPP, metalized film, high-gloss cast polypropylene film. The system offers fast set-up times of just a few minutes, even when changing to a different substrate type and thickness. This simplicity is ideal for an environment like Positive Packaging where productivity depends on minimal downtime as nearly half of the companys jobs are between 25,000 and 30,000 linear meters. Autotrons mark-recognition system helps reduce make-ready waste by locking on to even low-contrast marks at make-ready. It provides secure mark localization and a quick transition to the new production substrate without needing to stop the press. In this way, makeready waste can be confined to a few hundred webmeters. A key factor in the decision to invest in the Autotron 2600 system was the close relationship that Positive Packaging has enjoyed with QuadTech for many years. QuadTechs technical support crew provides training sessions so that the operators can exploit the full potential of the system from the beginning. We also receive online remote diagnostics, to prevent any problems from emerging, Mr. Pranesh Kankanwadi explained.
