Oil / Petrol Mix Usage

- The Yezdi Manual, says that 3% SAE 50 oil should be added to the petrol. Unfortunately plain 50 grade is not easily available in the market today as most oil companies have stopped making it. - Also a problem with petrol. When the Jawas & Yezdis were first made the petrol available was ONLY LEADED and of around 87/89 octane . Today if we use NORMAL petrol then we get UNLEADED 87/89 octane. If we use Speed or Power, we get 89/90 octane with additives to ensure smooth clean burn. Over the years, Yezdi / Jawa owners have found that using 30 ml/ltr of SAE40 the best option. If 40ml/ltr or 50ml/ltr is used, the end result is just choked silencers. Extra oil does not necessarily mean healthier engines. Today's oils are far superior and are formulated to keep the engines healthy and clean for longer periods of time. Besides,do we REALLY need the pollution caused by exhausts smoking with either low quality or extra oil? The SAE brands of oil are more viscuos and are not specifically tailored to run with an Oil/Petrol mixed engine. They are basically engine oils to be used in a gear box. 2T oil is essentially an SAE 40 oil with additives to improve its characteristics especially petrol miscibility. 2T oil which requires lesser quantity /litre of petrol and will not affect the fuel consumption at all, helps in reducing the carbon deposit formation in the cylinder head & cleaner spark plugs thus proving protective for the engine. Others say that their bikes become more smoother when they switchover from 2T to Sae 20W40 or Sae 40. The correct amount is 30ml of SAE40 oil/ltr. 2T oil can be used but you will find that on long runs your bike will tend to overheat. It is much better to use straight SAE40 like MAK Gold 40 or Castrol 40. DO NOT USE 20W40 as this will not lubricate the bearings only burn out. Given the factors it has been found that 30ml/ltr is the MOST efficient and producing the least wastage/emissions. If however long high speed running is required then 40ml/ltr may be used for the run and then return to the usual for everyday use. While it all depends on the bike and the rider, the thumb rule that is arguably concluded upon isCity: Regular Petrol with 5% (50ml/lit) 2T Mix, or 5% manually mixed 2T Oil (preferable) - result - less smoke. Highway: Regular Petrol with 5% (50ml/lit) 20w40 or 20W50(or SAE 40 ) oil.

For some who've used Castrol SuperTT since 1987, have found that their average mileage was around 30 to 32 kms/ltr. The engine burned much less smoke and the plug, exhaust ports and exhausts were clogged far less. The engine was exceptionally smooth and there were absolutely no starting problems which is typical of a number of Yezdis and Jawas. The type of Spark Plug that is used also plays a very important part. Sae 40 or 50 does clog up the exhausts. Owners could find a thick grey sludge that would drip out from the exhausts every time they parked their bike on the centre stand. Whereas Castrol SuperTT leaves a normal, very thin and black colored oil that leaked out, the black color showing that the oil/petrol mix and tuning of the carb was correct. The additives in todays high performance oils do contribute a great deal to engine cleanliness and the down time between cylinder/piston/exhausts decarbonisation is reduced tremendously. The impression that a thicker oil makes your bike run smoother is just a false notion. In fact, thicker oil could cause loss of energy 2T oil viscosity wise is equivalent to the company specified SAE 40 and it feels thin, because of its additives for better mixing with petrol. This additive burns in the combustion chamber leaving the oil with equivalent properties of SAE 40 (information from an IOC source) The Indian Oil Pumps (the orange hoarded ones) store two kinds of packet 2T Oils in their pumps... one is a 40ml and the other is 60ml.. the 60ml is a silver packet and this has been found to be way better than any other packeted 2T Oil to mix with the fuel. There has been some debate over 2T vs Sae 20W/40 multigrade oils and their proper usage. The important thing to understand about the SAE oils are that they are multigrade oils which means that they change viscosity based on engine temperature. The temperature change in our fuel tanks are dependent mainly on the outside ambient temperature which normally occurs depending on the weather and not on engine temperature. That is, during summer, our fuel tanks are likely to get warmer and cooler in winter depending on where we park our vehicles. Apart from this, SAE multigrade oils are designed mainly for 4 stroke engines and are used in the transmission sump. The oil is then filtered through an oil filter and through an internal pump, used to lubricate the cylinder and piston. The oils being multigrade, change viscosity

during high engine heat. This change in viscosity is necessary as when an engine heats up, the oil used for lubrication should be thinner to facilitate better lubrication of the engine and thus the piston and cylinder. So basically, in a 4 stroke engine, the same oil used in the gear box is used to lube the piston and cylinder. Our Jawa's and Yezdi's do not have a seperate oil tank and pump which is now a standard feature on all new motorcycles. We have to use a petroil mix manually put into the fuel tank. The Govt. of India has made it mandatory for all petrol pumps to have an oil injection attachment to the pump to enable the proper mix of oil and petrol when you fill up. There was an attempt by Yezdi to incorporate and oil pump on one of the models but it failed.(Yezdi "Oil King") One very important point to be noted here is that once a particular brand of 2T oil is used, avoid using another brand or type, as oil to oil, there are a few differences in additives that may be detrimental to the engines in the long run. Oil from certain petrol pumps, sometimes use recycled oil and there is no way you can identify it. as contributed by Keith & other Yezdi clubbers
