On Friday evening November 18th, Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters will host its Annual Gala from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford. The fundraiser is being called World of Possibilities. Plans for the evening include a cocktail reception, a 3-course sit-down dinner, award presentations, Live and Silent Auctions, a guest list jam packed with especially vibrant people, and a whole lot of surprises that are still being orchestrated. The events Cochairs are David E.A. Carson, the former Chairman and CEO of Peoples Bank and Walter Harrison, President of the University of Hartford. The journey that children make as they transition through our programs is more often than not a tremendously positive one, said Darlene Roberts, Director of Fund Development for Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters. Its a journey during which a childs implied promise is consistently nurtured until that promise transforms into fullled dreams. Thats why we believe that our events very hopeful title, World of Possibilities, is especially appropriate. We requested feedback from attendees of past Nutmeg galas, said Roberts. Almost uniformly, respondents were enthusiastic about having the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed, informal evening. World of Possibilities is being organized to deliver exactly what they outlined. This year, gala-goers can look forward to an evening thats every bit as laid back as it is fun and lively. The venue for World of Possibilities, the legendary Hartford Golf Club, is well known for lending a sophisticated ambiance to festivities of all kinds. With its, elegant dining and function rooms, its world-class chefs, its awardwinning cuisine, and its white glove service, the club has been enchanting members and guests since 1896. I know attendees will be struck by the wall of windows in the clubs dining room, said Roberts. They look out on a spectacular view of the facilitys beautifullymanicured golf course and gardens.

President & CEO

Andy Fleischmann

Andy Fleischmann Chosen To Lead Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters

Following a nationwide search, nine-term Connecticut State Representative Andrew M. Fleischmann has been named President & CEO of Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, the states premier youth mentoring organization. The announcement was made by William J. Carew, Chairman of the non-prots Board of Directors. We are excited that Andy has agreed to lead Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters into this new era for the agency, said Carew. Andys unique blend of energy, intelligence and passion, and his experience in both the private and public arenas, will help us to expand the impact of our mission in the communities we serve. I can think of few organizations that help children more profoundly than Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, said Fleischmann. Studies show that the support it gives at-risk children makes them less likely to become involved with drugs, alcohol or crime. And it makes them more likely to stay in school, get good grades and reach their full potential. I am honored and excited to have been selected as Nutmegs next President and CEO, and cant wait to get started. Fleischmann has represented Connecticuts 18th House District (West Hartford) since 1995. He serves as Chairman of the Education Committee and Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee for Education. A longtime advocate for children, Fleischmann has championed sweeping reforms to help ensure that all of Connecticuts children have access to high quality education that prepares them for the 21st century workplace. Outside of the legislature, Fleischmann has spent the last six years as Chief Operating Ofcer of SpeedReading People, a communications training rm. As one of the rms co-founders, he led the capitalization of the company and was integrally involved in the development of its strategic plan. Hes also played a key role in developing strategic partnerships and programs on leadership and team effectiveness there. During his public career, Fleischmann has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including: the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Legislative Award (2010), the Connecticut Family Resource Alliance Friend of Families Award (2007), and the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut Chapter Award (2006). Fleischmann received a bachelors degree from Princeton University, graduating from its Woodrow Wilson School of Public Affairs cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. 4 Mentors And Others Honored By Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters

Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters formally recognized four state Bigs (adult mentors) for making a signicant contribution to advancing the mentoring concept and changing the lives of disadvantaged children for the better. The awards were presented at the non-prots annual Volunteer Recognition Event, held this past spring at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center in Wetherseld. Receiving an award were Vivian Felten of Collinsville, a resources conservationist with the National Resources Conservation Service. Vivian has been a mentor since 2006. Shes matched with a 13-year-old girl from Torrington. Also receiving an award was Farmingtons Loel Meckel, who has mentored twice since becoming involved with Nutmeg in 2001. Loel is an Assistant Director at the State of Connecticuts Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Hes currently matched with a young boy living in Southington. Other recipients of the Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring awards for 2011 are: Michael Wood of Windsor, a Principal Human Resources Specialist at the Connecticut Department of Children and Families, and Andrea Cuascut of Hartford, a retiree whos been volunteering as a senior mentor at the M.D. Fox Elementary School since 2006. Nick Goodine, a former Little Brother (mentored child) was recognized for exemplifying the organizations program ideal. The non-prot presented community partnership awards to The Travelers Foundation and the Northstar Recycling Group. We salute all of this years award winners, said Gloria Talbot, Vice President of Program and Operations at Nutmeg. They are both amazing and inspiring. They, along with the children with whom theyre matched, are tangible proof that mentoring works and is a powerful tool for transforming individuals, families and communities.

A Swinging Time At Nutmegs 19th Golf Classic

Beneath the bluest of skies and the most temperate of late spring breezes, Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted its 19th Annual Invitational Golf Classic. The event was held for the third year running at the legendary Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford. This years outing saw a large eld of golfers participating, with approximately 200 players taking to the 115-year-old clubs superbly-manicured fairways and greens. Besides a challenging day of world-class golf at an impeccablymaintained venue, attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch, oncourse contests, local TV news coverage, a cocktail reception, dinner, a rafe, player awards and live and silent auctions. Master of ceremonies for the program portion of the evening was NBC Connecticut news anchor, Brad Drazen. Chairman of the golf events organizing committee was Tom Daily, a Nutmeg Board member and partner at the Reid & Riege law ofces. One of the after-dinner speakers was veteran Big Brother Rich Bartlett, who has been a mentor to 4 different boys during his long association with Nutmeg. The Platinum Sponsor for Nutmegs 19th Annual Invitational Golf Classic was Northstar Pulp & Paper Company. Gold Sponsors were: Aerodyne Alloys, USA Hauling & Recycling, Travelers and Invesco, LLC. Silver Sponsors were: Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge, John Hancock Life Insurance Company, Reid & Riege, P.C., Signal Service, Inc. and Ovation Benets. Bronze sponsors were: CNC Software, McGann, Bartlett & Brown, PPI Benets Solutions, Universal Connectivity, Stewart Stafng Solutions, Freeman Spogli & Company, RM Bradley and Ryan Business Systems. Thanks to our very generous sponsors and event attendees, we dramatically surpassed our nancial goal for our 2011 golf fundraiser, said Darlene Roberts, Nutmegs Director of Fund Development. This is especially exciting news because, even during a still-precarious nancial period, it makes it possible for us to move more at-risk local kids off our waiting list and into productive, life-altering matches.

One of the award-winners at the Volunteer Recognition Event was Big Sister Vivian Felten, on the right. With her is her Little Sister Hilary, left.

Brownstone Park Hosts Splashtastic Event!

Early in summer, Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park in Portland opened its gates, free of charge, to more than 80 Bigs and 80 Littles from Nutmeg. This is the fourth consecutive year for this Brownstone-hosted event, called Mentoring-InMotion. In addition to Nutmeg, Brownstone invited more than 30 of Connecticuts other approved oneon-one youth mentoring organizations to participate. Nutmeg and the other organizations do amazing things for kids in need throughout the state, said Sean Hayes, Brownstones Chief Financial Ofcer. Were glad were in a position to help out groups that work so effectively and consistently to make our communities better places to live and work. Thanks to Brownstones generosity, many kids, and the adults who mentor them, had the chance to take part in a dizzying array of activities in and around the centerpiece of the park, a Class-A fresh water quarry lake. There was cliff jumping, rock climbing, hiking, cliff climbing, snorkeling, wake boarding, zip lining, kayaking, swimming and, for the adventurous, even scuba diving lessons. I cant tell you how much we appreciate the kindness of everybody at Brownstone, said Gloria Talbot, Nutmegs Vice President of Program & Operations. They, and all the organizers of the MentoringIn-Motion activity, made it possible for our Bigs and Littles to take part in adventures theyll talk about for years to come.
Taking a break from Brownstones cooling waters are Big Brother Rocky Holland and his snorkeled and goggled Little Brother, Abryan. Trying to decide which of the water parks attractions theyll sample rst are Big Sister Willow Quinn and her Little Sister, Marlena.

All life jacketed-up and ready for some aquatic action are Big Sister Ana Robles, far right, her Little Sister, Yesenia, in the middle, and her daughter, Madelyn, on the left. Not only did media celebs Curtis Grevenitz, left, and Heather Hegedus, right, report on the event for WFSB-TV, they also took a dip or two in the Brownstone lake.

Big Brother Makes Big News!

While a late-in-the-day summer storm was pelting down outside, Big Brother Damoy Davis was sitting for an interview in the New Britain Herald newsroom along with his two Little Brothers, Malik and Louis. Damoy explained to Herald reporter, Robert Storace, what Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring meant to him and how much he felt it beneted kids, and communities and families. All Malik and Louis wanted to talk about was how much fun theyre having with Big Brother Damoy. The story in the New Britain Herald couldnt have turned out better. Similar stories featuring other matches ran this summer in the Hartford Courant, the Waterbury RepublicanAmerican, the West Hartford News, the Bristol Press, the Manchester Journal-Inquirer, the Willimantic Chronicle, the Avon News, the Canton News, the Simsbury News and the Thomaston Express. We even had the opportunity to visit La Bomba radio for a live in-studio interview with the stations morning show personalities. All of this media coverage was designed to draw attention to the fact that we are very much in need of male mentoring candidates, especially African-American and Latino males. The campaign scored some solid hits and because of it we were able to move a good number of boys off our waiting list and into match relationships with caring, inspirational men. That said, we are still very much in need of male mentors...and the need is statewide. As many of you know, approximately 80% of the children on our waiting list are boys, many of them AfricanAmerican and Latino. Know any good mentoring candidates? If you do, please have them contact Program Assistant MaryBeth Goral. Her phone number is: 1-800-237-5437, ext. 117. Her e-mail address is: mgoral@bbbsnutmeg.org.

Rock Cats Go To Bat For Nutmeg

Text: The always generous New Britain Rock Cats have taken the word generous up several notches this past summer... into homerun territory you might say. By offering free tickets to Bigs and Littles, the Rock Cats made it possible for hundreds of matches to get an up close and personal look at some jaw-dropping baseball action in June, July and August at legendary New Britain Stadium. And that doesnt even take into account the delicious ballpark food, the roving band of costumed mascots, the on-eld promotions and the night time reworks! The ball club even made it possible for 10 Littles to receive free bicycles and free bike helmets.
At a summer claw fest between the New Britain Rock Cats and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Big Brother Mark Blau, right, and his Little Brother, Dwayne, give the game and their 4-monthold match a big thumbs-up.

Thrilled to receive a free bicycle and equally thrilled to meet Rocky, the New Britain Rock Cats playful mascot, is Little Sister Johanna. Shes happily matched with Big Sister Melissa Prifti.

Posing for a quick photo following their New Britain Herald interview are, from left, Little Brother Lewis; Big Brother Damoy Davis; and Little Brother Malik.

High in the stands and taking a break from watching the action down on the playing eld behind them are Big Brother Herb Wishow, left, and his Little Brother Terry.

Wheely Happy!
At almost 6 feet tall, Little Brother Angel has outgrown the red, black and white Trek bike Big Couple Bobi Molchan and Bear Holcombe got for him years ago. So, Bobi and Bear thoughtfully donated it to us. We found somebody who could really use the bike: Little Sister Faith. Shes beyond excited about it. Shes wheely, wheely happy! Bobi and Bear, whove always been generous to Nutmeg, have come through once again. Bear, by the way, is a former Board Member, former Board Chairman and current Trustee. Bobi has been a driving force behind many of our galas and special events over the years. Thanks to both of them for the gift!

Liberty Bank Foundation Donates $5,000 To Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters
The Liberty Bank Foundation has donated $5,000 to Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, Connecticuts premier youth mentoring organization. The donation will support our long running Windham School-Based Program, a collaboration between Nutmeg , the University of Connecticut and the Windham School District. The program is held at the Natchaug School, W.B. Sweeney School, Windham Center School, North Windham School and the Windham Middle School. Darlene Roberts, Nutmegs Director of Fund Development said, Now that our Windham School-Based Program has kicked-off its 2011-2012 academic year, this generous gift from the Liberty Bank Foundation is especially appreciated. It will help enrich the volunteer experience of college student mentors. It will help broaden horizons for Windham school children mentored via the program, and their families. For administrators and teachers in the 5 Windham area schools we serve, it will further enhance an already valuable resource. Since its inception in 1997, the Liberty Bank Foundation has provided almost $6 million in grants to nonprot organizations within Liberty Banks market area. Bigs and Littles Take To The Wild Blue Yonder

For the last 9 years, the members of the 43rd Aviation Flying Club have donated their time, expertise and equipment so youngsters in the Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters program can become familiar with the basics of ying and then experience the thrill of actual ight in carefully-maintained and fully-equipped 4-seat, single-engine planes. The activity has become so popular at Nutmeg that a lottery has to be held every spring to regulate the ow of candidates. This year, 5 very lucky matches took part. The ying adventure has multiple benets, in addition to being an adrenalin-booster and major learning experience. It exposes Littles to possible career options. It empowers them by introducing them to an activity few of their peers have taken part in. Also, because Bigs and Littles go through this activity as a team, its yet another way to cement their match bond.
High above the Connecticut River, Little Brother Bailey takes the controls and experiences the thrill of steering an aircraft thats cruising along at more than 150 miles per hour.
