Guide to Assembling your Computer: This guide can also be used as a troubleshooting guide to find out why your

computer is not working. NOTE: The beeps described are intended only as a guide and may not be the same as the beeps your board makes. Also many newer boards will have a guide telling you what your beep codes mean. NOTE: Some CPU coolers mount with a push pin type connector, these take quite a bit of force to install. It would be better to install this type onto the motherboard before it is installed into the case so you can properly support it while applying that much force, it also allows you to see if the pins are fully inserted. It is also easier if you are using some of the larger aftermarket CPU coolers, to install those prior to mounting the motherboard inside of the case. Assembly and start up: Install the power supply, case fans and bay devices, install CPU, install CPU cooler (don't forget to use a good quality thermal paste and dont use too much of it). Mounting the motherboard: Install only the 1/4" stand off risers that line up for your motherboard. (not all of them get used) make sure the board does not touch the tray or case in any way. It should only have contact at the standoffs that line up with your motherboards mounting holes. each board has different standoff positions. (dont over tighten standoffs because they are brass and will strip easy) NOTE: Do not just screw in all of the standoffs they give you, this will cause a short to occur from the unused standoffs touching the board and the PSU will shut off immediately if it detects a short so if your computer wont turn on, it could be the board is touching something it shouldnt. If this is the case, don't panic because it rarely causes problems because PSU have built in safety features. Just remove the unused standoffs that are shorting the board to the case and everything should come on and work fine. Now plug the power supply unit (PSU) into the motherboard connections and case fans, plug your power cord in and turn power on. (don't forget there is an on/off switch on the back of the PSU, make sure it's on) You should hear a series of long beeps & all your fans should be turning. The long beeps means the board is looking for memory. That tells you your motherboard, CPU, & PSU are working ok. Unplug the power cord. This is very important to avoid shorting out the motherboard against the motherboard tray, because a PSU always has low voltage power going to the motherboard when cord is plugged in so it can turn itself on. RAM MEMORY: Install your sticks of RAM in the appropriate slots as identified on the motherboard, it should be marked something like 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b. In this example the numbers would mean the slots 1a and 1b are memory channel 1 and slots 2a and 2b are for memory channel 2. Always check your motherboard manual carefully to be sure you are using the right slots. Ram slots are often colored to guide you so keep this in mind because often you would put both sticks of ram into the same colored slots. In most cases you are almost always supposed to use the first and third slots. In most cases you will never put ram into side by side slots unless you are using all 4 slots or the board only has 2 slots. NOTE: If this is your first build, be aware that the ram sticks can take more pressure than you think

to seat them. use even firm pressure with both thumbs while gently lifting on the locking catches with your fingers until they lock into place, and dont worry nothing will break. VIDEO: Now if you have onboard video you should plug in your monitor and then you can Plug your power cord in and turn your power on. You should hear a power up test which is 1 short beep. You should then see your CPU, RAM, and video card recognized on the screen. If all is well up to this point then you know that your PSU, Motherboard, CPU, RAM and Monitor are working ok so turn off power and unplug the power cord. If you dont have onboard video then install your video card making sure it is fully into the slot and secured well. Install the external power wires (it may or may not require these depending on your card) and then plug your monitor into your video card. Plug your power cord in and turn your power on. You should hear a power up test which is 1 short beep. You should then see your CPU, RAM, and video card recognized on the screen. If all is well up to this point then you know that your PSU, Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Video Card, and Monitor are working ok so turn off power and unplug the power cord. It is normal to get a disk boot failure alert showing on the screen because you dont have any drives installed yet. This means that everything you've installed so far is working correctly. Turn off power and unplug the power cord. DRIVES: Install your CD/DVD Drives and your Hard Drive, plug in the data and power wires for the drives and turn power on and you will see your drives recognized on the boot screen. Now all your components are working and you are ready for programming. NOTE: Setting up your BIOS is done automatically by the motherboard detecting your hardware and using standard default settings for this hardware but it is advisable that you double check them by following the instructions in your manual and if needed enter the correct settings for your installed components and saving them. If you wish to customize any of these settings to something other than the factory recommended settings then that is your choice but it is easy to cause damage to your system if they are set incorrectly so do so at your own risk. INSTALLING DRIVERS FOR YOUR COMPUTER: NOTE: Drivers that come with any parts that you buy are almost always outdated so always check for newer ones at the website of the manufacturer. when you download the latest updated drivers, you should always select to save them to your desktop first, then select run to install them. Because you have them downloaded on your desktop, later on, you can use them to make a Driver CD with all the latest updated drivers for all the hardware on your computer. That way, if you ever need to reinstall windows you will already have them handy so you can reinstall them. Now install the motherboard drivers, I recommend going to the website of the manufacturer and download the latest available drivers straight from there. These are usually the chipset, audio, modem, and LAN. Now install your video card driver, I just ignore the one that comes with video cards on that CD, I recommend going to the website of the manufacturer and download the latest available drivers. (drivers that come with video cards on that CD are always outdated)

Now install drivers for any sound or networking cards that were added and not part of the motherboard itself by going to the website of the manufacturer and download the latest available drivers from there. OPERATING SYSTEM & SOFTWARE: Now install the operating system and restart your computer. Now don't do anything else yet until you install a good antivirus. There are many good free anti-viruses out there that work as good or better than the ones that you have to pay for so save your money here. A good anti-spyware program will also keep your computer running fast. (I recommend the Ad-Aware anti-spyware program & Avast 4 Home Free anti-virus) Now go to Microsoft update site and fully update windows, often this requires several restarts and going back for more updates until there are no more updates available so be patient. Now install the software and games you want on your system, then check for any available updates or patches from the manufacturer website then reboot. Now go to Microsoft update site and check to see if any more updates are needed. Often Microsoft will have updates for Microsoft related software you may be using. Now go to: (Start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools/ System Restore) and run windows Disk Defragmenter to streamline everything and speed up your computer. Now you are finished and you should create a new system restore point by going to: (Start/ all programs/ accessories/ system tools/ System Restore) Now you are finished and ready to enjoy your computer, but I advise you to collect all your manuals, paperwork, to keep them in a safe place along with your software.

Afraid: 'Killings of LGBTs in Philippines on the rise' MANILA, Philipines - There has been a steady and alarming rise in violence against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) community in the Philippines over the past 15 years, new research conducted by an LGBT advocacy group suggests, in line with a call for the police and the Commission and Human Rights to acknowledge and formally look into the troubling trend. For the first half of 2011 alone, as of June 17, the Philippine LGBT Hate Crime Watch says it has documented 28 killings within the gay community. This figure already nearly equals homicide and murder figures for 2010, which is pegged at 29. Expanding the timeframe to as early as 1996, a total of 103 (killings of LGBTs have been monitored), the group said. Of the 103 cases that the group considers hate crimes, 61 attacks were against gay men, 26 against transgenders, 12 against lesbians, and four targetted bisexuals. The figures were collated from news and personal accounts sent to the group through e-mail and Facebook. Marlon Toledo Lacsamana and Reighben Labilles, the groups coalition coordinators, admit that their data is very raw, and needs to be cross-checked with police records. But the two are having difficulty verifying the staggering data because the victims relatives are often unwilling to cooperate. Equally problematic: the police do not actually track crimes along the lines of whether or not they targetted LGBTs. Homophobia and transphobia (negative attitudes against transexualism) present among most of the victims families also made it impossible to procure sworn statements, narratives which would have expounded on the situations surrounding each murder, the group said. Lacsamana, who founded the group after two of his gay friends were brutally killed in 2009, said the victims relatives would rather have the police tag the incident as mere robberies than an overt and targetted attack on homosexuals. The victims families also feel stigmatized when the media sensationalize such crimes. They feel ashamed that their loved one is gay, he added. They often decide not to pursue the case anymore especially when the tabloids sensationalize the crime in the headlines. With these obstacles in sight, Lacsamana said the figures they have may be incomplete, but they definitely represent just a tip of the iceberg. In 2009, following the tragic deaths of his friends one was killed in March, the other in August Lacsamana, a librarian by profession, started collecting reports and archival data on hate crimes. With the help of Labilles, he is now bent on calling the attention of the government regarding hate crimes. Lacsamana, who is also openly gay, said there is a need for legislation protecting the LGBT community from these brutal crimes. Based on the groups study, victims of hate crimes endure

gruesome deaths like being stabbed multiple times, raped, tortured, suffocated, dismembered or being burned alive. Labilles is calling on Congress to investigate these crimes and to make people more aware of the LGBT communitys vulnerability to such attacks. Currently, the Anti-Discrimination Act of 2010 or House Bill 1483, filed by Rep. Teddy Casino of Bayan Muna, remains pending in Congress. The proposed law seeks to protect LGBTs against unlawful discrimination in employment, education, health services, public service, commercial and medical establishments including protection from police and military harassment. Without a law in the country that explicitly deals with hate crimes, most killings involving the LGBTs are simply reported generically as murders or homicides, with no provisions for deconstructing and analyzing the reports along the sector's concerns. Just imagine those that are unreported or are just categorized as mere robberies, Lacsamana said. The group is reaching out to the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Philippine National Police to help them verify each of the reported cases and to help identify other victims of hate crimes. While the group attests that a more thorough analysis of the reported cases is needed to verify that these are indeed prejudiced or hate crimes, they consider the killed individuals as victims of hate crimes because they are members of a minority group. At this point, were not sure if these are hate crimes, Lacsamana said. But we are sure that there are dead people who are victims from the LGBT community. For their part, the CHR welcomes the study from the Hate Crime Watch and invited them to send their study to them. Its a cause of concern for the CHR, said lawyer Chris Ocampo, CHR executive assistant. "The CHR is already attending various fora on LGBT rights with these reported cases. Earlier this month, actor-director Ricky Rivero was stabbed in his apartment by Hans Ivan Ruiz, a friend he met through Facebook. Rivero sustained 17 stab wounds but survived the attack. In a recent interview, Rivero admitted that he had sexual relations with Ruiz, whose girlfriend is said to be pregnant. Rivero allegedly woke up being stabbed by Ruiz. It was just the fourth time that Rivero allowed Ruiz to sleep over at his apartment. With the spate of crimes committed against members of the LGBT community, Lacsamana said they cant help but live in fear. We feel like sitting ducks, he said. We arent sure who will attack us next.

Lacsamana said the LGBT community is most vulnerable online, especially on Facebook, when they are "looking for love". He said the gay community shouldn't be blamed if they become too trusting. "Most homosexuals have clear intentions," he said. "They're just looking for love." Based on the group's study, Mindanao is the most dangerous region for lesbians with six out of 12 having been killed. Most of the victims are between the ages of 25 and 44. Of the six killed in Mindanao, two were shot; two others were stabbed; one was killed with a blunt object; while another died of unknown cases. Meanwhile, the Greater Manila Area is the deadliest for gays, bisexuals and transgendered with a total of 42 deaths. Based on recent figures, 28 of those killed were gays, 12 were transgendered, while 2 were bisexuals. Most of the victims died from multiple stab wounds.

Philippines urged to pass decade-old law protecting maids MANILA, PhilippinesSeveral labor advocacy groups have called on Philippine legislators to speed up the passage of the Kasambahay Bill (kasambahay is a Filipino word that means househelper), a proposed law that aims to increase the minimum wage of domestic workers and extend more rights and protection to them. Ellene Sana, director of the Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA) said lawmakers at the House of Representatives have been sitting on the legislation for some 10 years now. I dont understand why its taking them this long, Sana said. Sana trumpeted calls for the bills passage following the International Labour Organizations adoption of Convention 189: Decent Work for Domestic Workers on Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland. According to Sana, once the Philippines ratifies the Convention and passes its own legislation for domestic workers, it can then leverage for similar protection and benefits for its nationals overseas. We will have the moral high ground to demand from the receiving country more rights for our workers, Sana said. Agnes Matienzo of the Migrant Forum in Asia echoed Sanas concerns and stressed that passage of such legislation is an excellent complementary action to the Convention. Matienzo said the ILO convention is a good way to boost the campaign, for the Kasambahay Bill. Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who heads the labor committee in the upper chamber, has earlier lambasted the House of Representatives for failing to act on the House version of the bill. The longer we delay this, the longer we are depriving them of decent working condition, benefits and labor rights, Estrada was quoted as saying. Last year, the Senate approved on third and final reading the Senate version of the bill, which stipulates that employers need to pay their domestic helpers at least P2,500 if they are within

Metro Manila; at least P2,000 if they are in first class municipalities; and at least P1,500 for those in third class municipalities. According to Estrada, the Kasambahay Bill has been languishing in the legislative mill since 1996 when then Sen. Francisco Tatad filed a Senate Bill for household workers during the 10th Congress. It is high time to enact the long overdue Batas Kasambahay in order for the household helpers to have a decent living, Estrada added. The ILO estimates that there are between 53 100 million domestic workers in 117 countries. Around 83 per cent of these are women or girls and many are migrant workers. In the Philippines, household workers receive only half of the minimum wage in the National Capital Region, while the rest of the country only pays them 45 percent of the minimum wage. Yet, they work much longer hours than other workers who are legally entitled to a minimum, the ILO said. According to the ILO in the Philippines, about half of domestic helpers work more than 10 hours a day. WOMEN BRACE TO FIGHT DISCRIMINATION In line with the Islamic norms and values Sisters of Deenul Islam (SOD) a newly established organization of young girls has been set up to bring an end to discrimination on women with head scarf (Hijab). The organizations Motto Restore Islamic Pride focuses on Islamic values. President of SOD Mariam Kamara a student said they mostly face discrimination based on their Islamic dress code. At times people frown at us for our dress-code and embarrass us in public, she said. Sister Kamara went on to say that some women with head scarves have lost their jobs while others were asked out of institutions or are not allowed to participate in some activities. Some say that we are inferior in the society which is not correct and not right for them to thinks so, she said. She went on to say that the growth of Islam in the world needs more teaching. An Education Officer Amina Bawoh said the organization was set up to encourage Islamic women to cherish their religion more especially when they are attaining Western education. They should not forget their Islamic dress code and what Allah says about the dress of women in the society, she said.

She pointed out that they want to promote peace, unity and a forum of understanding among the universities and colleges in the country. It is our right to be educated but we should not forget our religion, she stressed. She noted that eradicating discrimination against women will go a long way for the country especially when religious tolerance is enjoyed in the country. Head scarf is a dress Allah asked us to put on as Muslim women. I feel good when I dress in such a way and I will do all I can to keep my pride and the respect I have in the society so that the society will not look at me differently, she said. Currently, SOD has over 20 members who are in universities and the Voice of Islam is serving as their head office. Among the activities lined up are radio programmes on discrimination for people to be better informed of what head scarf is all about. The organization has received a lot of commendation from various groups and women right activists. Some argue that a country like Sierra Leone should not practice such discrimination because of the kind of religious tolerance we are enjoying. It is not only for us but for our children says sister Bawoh. Anonymous Male Abuse Stories In Kelso, a man had been out drinking and came home to fall asleep on the couch. His wife took an iron skillet and beat him. He was taken to the emergency room of the hospital and stitched up. He was taken there by police, but no charges were filed against his wife. My wifein one of her drunken ragestook our daughters baseball bat and used it to smash the locked door to my study, where I was trying desperately to meet a deadline. And since Im over 6 feet tall and muscular, I wouldnt get much sympathy posing as a battered man!: I had thought of calling the police that night. When I recalled this incident to my divorce lawyer some time later, his response was: Its a good thing you didnt, because the police probably would have arrested you. My son was married to a violent young woman for a few months before he left her. He is much larger than her and is a one time amateur boxing champion. She never used weapons, so she never came close to hurting him physically. But she hit him whenever she got the notion to, she cut up his clothes and threw them in the yard, she destroyed the trophies he had accumulated in various sports competitions since childhood, and she destroyed a wedding album my wife had made for them. Neither party was blameless, but the physical violence was all hers. If my son had ever hitten her, there would have been evidence for weeks. I was in a hellish marriage with a woman who had difficulty controlling her rage, which would frequently erupt with her hitting, verbal abuse, and screaming. If fighting with her did occur, it was self-defense; if she threw a punch or kicked, I defended myself. In one particular case, after

she initiated a fight by kicking and throwing punches, she called the police to report me as the violent abuser! When they responded, I was seen as the bad guy, she was the victim!
