To order individual reagents or test kit components, use the specified code number. USE OF THE OCTET COMPARATOR The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent color standards. A test sample is inserted into the openings in the top of the comparator. The sample can then be compared to four color standards at once, and the value read off the comparator. For optimum color comparison, the comparator should be positioned between the operator and a light source, so that the light enters through the special light-diffusing L Mott screen in the back of the comparator. Avoid viewing the comparator against direct sunlight or an irregularly lighted background.

PROCEDURE FREE AVAILABLE CHLORINE 1. Rinse the test tube (0106) with sample water. Fill to 10 mL line with sample water. 2. Add one *Chlorine DPD #1R Tablet (6999A). Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 3. Immediately insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6978). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as Reading #1. Do not discard this sample if testing for Monochloramine, Dichloramine or Total Residual Chlorine. NOTE: Reading should be made within one minute of adding reagent. Reading #1 = ppm Free Available Chlorine MONOCHLORAMINE 4. Add one Chlorine DPD #2R Tablet (6904A) to sample from Step 3. Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 5. Insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6978). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as Reading #2. Reading #2 - Reading #1 = ppm Monochloramine DICHLORAMINE AND TOTAL RESIDUAL CHLORINE 6. Add one *Chlorine DPD #3R Tablet (6905A) to sample from Step 5. Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 7. Insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6978). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as Reading #3. Reading #3 - Reading #2 = ppm Dichloramine Reading #3 = ppm Total Residual Chlorine

TOTAL RESIDUAL CHLORINE AND COMBINED CHLORINE 1. Rinse test tube (0106) with sample water. Fill to 10 mL line with sample water. 2. Add one *Chlorine DPD #1R Tablet (6999A). Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 3. Immediately insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6978). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as ppm Free Available Chlorine. 4. Add one *Chlorine DPD #3R Tablet (6905A). Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 5. Insert test tube into Chlorine DPD Comparator (6978). Match sample color to a color standard. Record as ppm Total Residual Chlorine. Combined Chlorine, ppm = Total Residual Chlorine - Free Available Chlorine TOTAL RESIDUAL CHLORINE *Chlorine DPD #4 Tablet determines Total Residual Chlorine and is used where a differentiation in the type of chlorine is not required. 1. Rinse test tube (0106) with sample water. Fill to 10 mL line with sample water. 2. Add one *Chlorine DPD #4 Instrument Grade Tablet (6906A). Cap and mix until tablet disintegrates. 3.
