Above table presents the starting rank and last ranks of the first and last students who did
admissions to a particular branch of a particular college. Start rank of a college refers to the rank of
the first student who got admission to that particular branch in that college and similarly last rank
is the rank of the last student who got admitted to it. So the table is self explanatory but it’s
recommended to go through the following facts regarding the colleges and admission trends.

If start rank and end rank corresponding to a particular branch of a specific college is
missing, then that branch does not exist in that college.

If the end rank of a particular entry is much far away or larger than the start rank, then
following facts may be concluded:-

A top ranker student named ‘top’ with good rank r1 might have opted for the first seat in x
college (any branch) and after him a student with rank r2 which is much far way or much poorer
than r1 (example - if r1=1200 then r2=2200) would take admission to the second seat in that x
college (that branch) then all the students with close ranks near to the rank of the second student
i.e. near to r2 take admission to that x college (that branch). So actual state rank should be 2200
but it’s 1200 due to r1 ran getting into this college although he deserved much better college.

This think happened because of many things like and are not happening since last year:-

Placements in ORISSA colleges before 2004 were scarce and very poor. (not only with
ORISSA but with all private ones and govt. too) so students did not consider placements in
those colleges and got admitted to the college of their choice…i.e. there were no rankings
of the colleges then and students with a range of rank were distributed in many colleges. So
bad colleges got some good students in that way. But trend has changed from starting from
last year. Due to heavy placements in top 8 colleges (listed here) of ORISSA students with
good rank went to college sorted according to performance in placements and were
admitted to a particular branch in cluster i.e. for a branch of a college start ranks and end
ranks were closer.

Also in 2004 and before students selected their choice branches and most choose
Electronics & Telecommunication as their first choice irrespective of colleges. So start
ranks for this branch was also good for not so good colleges. They thought that telecom
sector is a consistent sector so demand will not fluctuate but they did not knew that only IT
companies hunt ORISSA for software jobs and core companies don’t come to any
campuses here except NIT. Again many did choose electrical even tough they got CS. This
was again due to same factor demand for IT may decrease and increase. But that was not
real scenario. IT sector will only grow and grow. So from last year students are choosing
Computer Science IT as top choice ahead of instrumentation, electrical and mechanical and
electronics-telecommunication is chosen if it interests the candidate. So IT was taking
much poor rank students last time but now it’s most preferred after CS and Electronics. (all
the placements except a few had software companies for recruiting every one for software
jobs….so IT and CS are being given some kind of preference by top recruiters like wipro
and TCS)

And outside state candidates can take admissions any where except in government
colleges. Also any types of reservations or quotas are not applicable for/to the outside state
candidates and they will be admitted under general cvategory but I’m not sure if there’s
separate rank for OS candidates or not. (This is as mentioned in orissa jee brochure and
it may not be correct as sufficient information regarding this is not provided by orissa
jee brochure or website)

You’ll be surprised to see that much poor rank students got admissions to some good colleges
in 2004.
Reason - Placements were very poor those times and the students did not want to read here
because of this. So they got admissions into many private colleges in top cities like Bangalore and
Chennai expecting good placement there (but that was not d case) and the fresh +2 pass outs were
reluctant to get admissions in these colleges in orissa even after securing gppd marks, so they
prepared for 1 more year to get admissions to NITs IIITs etc. But now ORISSA colleges are on top
and attract outside state students too b’coz of nice placements and good environment, so it’ll be
difficult to get into top colleges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are other orissa colleges in the list?

If you have a decent rank less than 3000 or 4000 then you can get admissions to the top colleges
listed above.(those are sorted according to placements for 2008 passing out batch). Here in those 8
colleges listed above placements are plenty and you’ll have maximum probability of being selected
in placement in these 8 colleges even tough it’s up to you and your preparations. Also the
probability of getting selected in placements by top companies decreases as you go down the list in
the table here. And in other colleges which are not listed placement figures are much lower, so
your chance of getting placed there is less.

Tell me about other colleges that are not in the above list but where some/any people get
placed before completion of B.Tech or just after it?

Other good colleges are GIET Gunupur , GHITM Puri, COEB Bhubaneswar, KEC Bhubaneswar,
GITA Bhubaneswar , Padmanava engineering college Rourkela, Synergy Institute Dhenkanal,
EAST Bhubaneswar sorted in descending order of placement figures in 2006 & 2007 and few
other factors. Student in these colleges mostly get placed in companies by attending the open off
campus placement drives conducted by companies where companies allows all B.Tech students of
a particular year irrespective of colleges to attend placement at one place. Few companies visit
campuses of these colleges for recruiting students.(some times when companies have heavy
requirements and need 1000+ employees from orissa at one go then they come to these colleges
after taking many students out of the top 8 colleges). Also colleges outside Bhubaneswar are not
given any importance by many candidates.

What about analysis of admissions to the colleges not listed here?

After seats in those 8 top colleges are filled up students randomly in their own choice get
admission to these colleges and the students with rank above 4000 generally get distributed among
these colleges non-uniformly (as in 2004) as there can not be any ranking among these same
colleges and they will fall to same rank. This is the reason why i did not mention these colleges in
4

the main analysis table .Among those colleges GIET Gunupur , GHITM Puri, COEB
Bhubaneswar, KEC Bhubaneswar are generally preferred by students over other institutes. OSME
Keonjhar is agovernment college where you can study electrical, mechanical, mining but I doub’t
if hardly any placements exists there.

What about other branches?

I covered top 6 preferred engineering branch and did not mention any thing about branches like
Civil, Chemical, Manufacturing, Textile, Biotech . These branches are not present in most colleges
of orissa. Civil is present in colleges like ITER (started fromlast year) and CET and UCE Burla
and OEC i think. Civil engineering is meant for those who aspire to become a real civil engineer
and is not a choice if you just want to get an engineering degree (civil is a poor rated branch
considering placements). Biotech students are not allowed to sit in placements of some companies
like satyam. Other branches exist only in few govt. colleges in orissa and have recorded very poor
placements. Even few companies like ATOS Origin, Mindtree doesn’t allow mechanical students
to attend their placements here.

Will the analysis of orissa jee 2004 reflect in 2007?

Definitely not! Colleges have improved a lot and orissa jee counseling has become very
competitive indeed. It’s difficult to make it to top colleges in orissa now. For example in 2004
sillicon engineering colleges got students ranked from 1084-5000+ and in 2006 it’s seats were
filled up by 1800+ rank and similarly in ITER it finished up about rank 1200. So it’s getting more
competent because of placements and large number of candidates from other states who want to
read in orissa. But the analysis will report which are the most preferred colleges in orissa in
general and the ranking of top colleges will be reflected too.

I have x rank in orissa jee, year 2xxx where I would get admission?

Just read rest of contents of this document and apply your brain and according to ranking and facts
analyze where you would read and where you are eligible to. Please don’t ask us regarding it.

Note - Information regarding any other colleges of orissa which don’t take students from orissa jee
counseling are not mentioned here. Also colleges that started after 2004 are not mentioned.

Special Note For Outside State Candidates

Information regarding outside candidates that are mentioned here may not be correct as sufficient
data regarding outside state candidates of orissa jee are not ,mentioned any where in orissa JEE site
or brochure. So we can’t be held responsible for any thing.
