Current National Energy Policy

The objectives of 1979 National Energy Policy; [1]. Supply To assure adequate, secure and cost-effective supply of energy; [2]. Utilisation To promote efficient utilisation of energy & discourage wasteful and non-productive patterns of energy consumption; and; [3]. Environment To ensure factor pertaining to environment protection are not neglected in production & utilisation of energy.

Energy sources determined by Fuel Diversification Policies [1]. 1981 Four-Fuel Diversification Policy To reduce over-dependence on single fuel source To focus on four main sources of fuel; oil, hdyro, natural gas and coal [2]. 2000 Five-Fuel Diversification Policy To incorporate renewable energy as a fifth fuel To expand fuel sources to comprise oil, hydro, gas, coal and renewable energy

Malaysia Comprises of Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah. Malaysia Peninsular contributes to 40% of land area (about 132K sq.km), these areas are divided into 11 States & Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with 80% of national population.

Sarawak and Sabah contributes to about 60% of land area (about 199K sq.km), but there is only 20% of national population.
Is it suitable for SMR NPP to be developed in Sabah and Sarawak due to its small grid and the availability of renewable energy from hydro power?

NEW NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY INCORPORATED IN TENTH MALAYSIA PLAN (2011)

[1]. Increasing & diversifying generation capacity. Development of alternative sources of energy, particularly hydro as well as importation of coal & LNG by 2015 to improve security of supply. To further reduce carbon emission,super-critical coal technology will be explored; Nuclear energy as a longer term option will be considered in Peninsular Malaysia, with detailed feasibility study, human capital development and awareness campaign. [2]. Strengtening transmission and distribution networks [3]. Restructuring the electricity supply industry.

[4]. Improving customer service delivery.
