economic partnerships. The agreement announced at the World Federation of Exchanges in Johannesburg said the nations Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa represented a combined listed market capitalisation of US$9.02 trillion, equity marketing trading value/month of US$422 billion and 9,481 companies listed. "As a logical second phase in the alliance, the exchanges have agreed to work together to develop new products for crosslisting on the respective exchanges," Russell Loubser, CEO of the JSE said in a statement. ************************************************ THOUSANDS OF JOBS CHOPPED IN S.A. FORESTRY The South African forestry industry, which is worth more than R40 billion a year, has shed close to 12 500 jobs since 2008 and continues to decline, Michael Peter, the executive director of Forestry South Africa (FSA), Business Report reported. It quoted Peter as saying that, unlike its international counterparts, the local forestry industry had no tariff protection from imports, no subsidies and incentives for domestic production, and was far away from many of the key overseas markets. ************************************************ CARBON CONSCIOUS A WINNER WITH CLEAN ENERGY ACT Australian-listed company Carbon Conscious Limited, a developer of forestry plantation projects to deliver carbon offset credits, says it expects to be a major beneficiary of the passage of the Clean Energy Bill 2011 through the House of Representatives and declared it as a major milestone in the birth of Australias new carbon economy. Steve Lowe, Executive Chairman of Carbon Conscious, said in a statement that the passage of the Clean Energy Bill 2011 through the lower house was a great day for Australias carbon abatement industry and paves the way for substantial expansion of the Companys carbon forest sink operations. ************************************************ DROUGHT SUCKS VALUE OUT OF FPC FOREST PLANTATIONS Meanwhile, the West Australia Forest Products Commission has reportedly wiped millions of dollars from the value of its pine plantations and been forced to harvest thousands of drying trees prematurely due to drought. The West Australian has reported the FPC announced an annual loss of A$13 million, blaming record dry and hot conditions for sucking water out of the forest area for the write down in the value of its plantations. ************************************************ ALTO PARANA PLANS $50M ANNUAL INVESTMENTS Alto Paran, the Argentine offshoot of Chiles Arauco, has announced that it will undertake an annual investment plan of more than $50 million in order to improve their, lift productivity and consolidate their positioning in the world forest products markets in a sustainable manner, Misiones Online reported..

************************************************ CMPC SCOPING US$2B BRAZIL PULP PLANT EXPANSION Chiles CMPC is planning a pulp project in Brazil that could end up costing between US$1.5 billion and US$2 billion, its reported. The company has said the project would add 1.3 million metric tons of capacity to its Guaiba plan, expanding capacity to 1.75 million tons annually from the 450,000 tons. ************************************************ FORESTRY AGENCIES HONOURED FOR SANTIAGO PARK PLANTINGS The Chilean Wood Corporation (CORMA) and the Forest Research Institute (INFOR) have been honoured by the Metropolitan Park of Santiago (PMS) for their contribution to the recovery of soils, through tree planting in the Park, which has today become a green lung for the city of Santiago. BOLIVIA HALTS ROADING PROJECT THROUGH AMAZON FOREST Bolivia's Chamber of Deputies voted recently to approve President Evo Morales' decision to halt a controversial road project through the country's eastern Amazon rainforest in order to consult with the local population. Chamber of Deputies president Hctor Arce said halting the project would open the way for an "informed dialogue" with the affected communities. Despite the voteand a police attack on their camp last monthindigenous protesters who oppose the highway project said they would continue their cross-country march on La Paz. The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Arts and Media Building (NMIT) picked up three awards.
