INTRODUCTION

Definition of furniture
(comfortable environment.form,shape,size,color and texture)

Furniture is the mass noun for the movable objects which may support the human
body (seating furniture and beds), provide storage, or hold objects on horizontal surfaces
above the ground. Storage furniture (which often makes use of doors, drawers, and
shelves) is used to hold or contain smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and
household goods.

Furniture can be a product of artistic design and is considered a form of decorative art.
In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose.
Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and
lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many
materials, including metal, plastic, glass, fabrics and related materials. and wood. Furniture
can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which often reflect the local culture.

It ranges from the simple pine chest or country chair to the elaborate marquetry-work
cabinet or gilded console table. It is usually movable, though it can be built-in, as are
kitchen cabinets and bookcases. It can either reveal or hide how it was constructed, and it
can be highly stylized. The design and building of furniture is related to both architecture
and interior design. Throughout history the functional and decorative aspects of furniture
have been influenced by economics and fashion. See bentwood furniture; Early American
furniture; Shaker furniture. See also particular categories of furniture: e.g., bed; chair;
table.

In the multitude of design styles for furniture from chairs to sofas to desks, however,
since ancient times to the contemporary era, furniture design and making has been an
expression of culture and civilisation, of how we view the world and how we think it
should be ordered, moving it above and beyond the merely functional aspect.Furniture is
all around us, taken for granted, and its real meaning can be obscured and then lost. This
site seeks to open the eye and reveal furniture once again to us as one of the fine arts, as
an expression of human genius and beauty.

CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE
WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE?

CONTEMPORARY furniture is characterized by simple and clean lines. This style is

void of the heavy carvings and ornate features of other furniture styles. Many pieces will
utilize geometric forms and futuristic appearances. Practical functions in the products
take precedent over dramatic and lavish appearances. Contemporary designers may
incorporate classic and traditional features in subtle and understated ways. The wood and
fabric used in contemporary furniture is often light, exotic, and trendy. Colors will follow
the path of "ready to wear " clothing and are subject to change as fashion changes.

Contemporary Collections
Keep pace with the trends and freshen up the look of any space with contemporary
style. Contemporary furniture brings a minimalist approach to design with clean lines and
soft curves. Introduce a bold mix of function and fashion to create a style with
personality.

Contemporary or Modern design is considered to be the Zeitgeist of style.

It¹s sleek, stark, and spacious with angular and geometric lines. Modernists create a
cool, clean, sculpted look. Contemporary style is simple and refined using color
schemes for their effect rather than their coordination.
TRADITIONAL FURNITURE
WHAT IS TRADITIONAL FURNITURE?

TRADITIONAL furniture is characterized by distinct design features. Carvings,

overlays, pilasters, columns, pediments, claw, ball, masks, and animal heads are often
incorporated in this generalized category. The classic details of traditional furniture are
reflections of the periods and influences of years gone by. In the days before mass
production, the ornate and elaborate features described above were made possible by the
careful execution by the old world craftsmen. Modern day technology can duplicate
many of these hand made and craftsmen inspired designs. The woods used in traditional
furniture will usually include cherry, walnut, mahogany, and oak. Fabrics include
damasks, brocades, tapestries, and prints.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL SYTLE?

Traditional or Classic design is considered to be timeless.

Quality craftsmanship is one of the key elements of traditional styling.
Period furniture, luxurious fabrics and rich colors coalesce, creating
an elegant and formal ambience that never goes out of style.

HISTORY OF FURNITURE DESIGN

History

Furniture has been a part of the human experience since the development of non-nomadic
cultures. Evidence of furniture survives from the Neolithic Period and later in antiquity in
the form of paintings, such as the wall Murals discovered at Pompeii; sculpture, and
examples have been excavated in Egypt and found in tombs in Ghiordes, in modern day
Turkey.

Furniture Styles

This historical look at furniture making, art and design is an attempt to relate the
meaning of furniture styles and history to the present day needs of home furnishings and
decor, to acquaint the reader with the knowledge and understanding required to
accurately express her own tastes in furniture. We hope you enjoy it.

Neolithic Period

Skara Brae house Orkney Scotland evidence of home furnishings i.e. a dresser containing
shelves.

A range of unique stone furniture has been excavated in Skara Brae a Neolithic village,
located in Orkney, Scotland. The site dates from 3100-2500BC and due to a shortage of
wood in Orkney, the people of Skara Brae were forced to build with stone, a readily
available material that could be worked easily and turned into items for use within the
household. Each house shows a high degree of sophistication and was equipped with an
extensive assortment of stone furniture, ranging from cupboards, dressers and beds to
shelves, stone seats and limpet tanks. [[1]] The stone dressers were regarded as the most
important as it symbolically faces the entrance in each house and is therefore the first
item seen when entering, perhaps displaying symbolic objects, including decorative
artwork such as several Neolithic Carved Stone Balls also found at the site.
The Classical World

Early furniture has been excavated from the 8th-century B.C. Phrygian tumulus, the
Midas Mound, in Gordion, Turkey. Pieces found here include tables and inlaid serving
stands. There are also surviving works from the 9th-8th-century B.C. Assyrian palace of
Nimrud. The earliest surviving carpet, the Pazyryk Carpet was discovered in a frozen
tomb in Siberia and has been dated between the 6th and 3rd century B.C.. Recovered
Ancient Egyptian furniture includes a 3rd millennium B.C. bed discovered in the Tarkhan
Tomb, a c.2550 B.C. gilded set from the tomb of Queen Hetepheres, and a c. 1550 B.C.
stool from Thebes. Ancient Greek furniture design beginning in the 2nd millennium B.C.,
including beds and the klismos chair, is preserved not only by extant works, but by
images on Greek vases. The 1738 and 1748 excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii
introduced Roman furniture, preserved in the ashes of the 79 A.D. eruption of Vesuvius,
to the eighteenth century.

Early Modern Europe

The furniture of the Middle Ages was usually heavy, oak, and ornamented with carved
designs. Along with the other arts, the Italian Renaissance of the fourteenth and fifteenth
century marked a rebirth in design, often inspired by the Greco-Roman tradition. A
similar explosion of design, and renaissance of culture in general, occurred in Northern
Europe, starting in the fifteenth century. The seventeenth century, in both Southern and
Northern Europe, was characterized by opulent, often gilded Baroque designs that
frequently incorporated a profusion of vegetal and scrolling ornament. Starting in the
eighteenth century, furniture designs began to develop more rapidly. Although there were
some styles that belonged primarily to one nation, such as Palladianism in Great Britain,
others, such as the Rococo and Neoclassicism were perpetuated throughout Western
Europe.

19th Century

The nineteenth century is usually defined by concurrent revival styles, including Gothic,
Neoclassicism, Rococo, and the Eastlake Movement. The design reforms of the late
century introduced the Aesthetic movement and the Arts and Crafts movement. Art
Nouveau was influenced by both of these movements.
Modernism

The first three-quarters of the twentieth century are often seen as the march towards
Modernism. Art Deco, De Stijl, Bauhaus, Wiener Werkstätte, and Vienna Secession
designers all worked to some degree within the Modernist idiom. Postmodern design,
intersecting the Pop art movement, gained steam in the 1960s and 70s, promoted in the
80s by groups such as the Italy-based Memphis movement. Transitional furniture is
intended to fill a place between Traditional and Modern tastes.

Asian history

Asian furniture has a quite distinct history. The traditions out of China, India and Japan
are some of the best known, but places such as Korea, Mongolia, and the countries of
South East Asia have unique facets of their own.Traditional Japanese furniture is well
known for its minimalist style, extensive use of wood, high quality craftsmanship and
reliance of wood grain instead of paintings or thick lacquers. Japanese chests are known
as Tansu, and are some of the most sought after of Japanese antiques. The antiques
available generally date back to the Tokugawa era.

Chinese furniture is traditionally known better for more ornate pieces. The use of un-
carved wood and bamboo and the use of heavy lacquers are well known Chinese styles. It
is worth noting that China has an incredibly rich and diverse history, and architecture,
religion, furniture and culture in general among many other aspects can vary widely from
one dynasty to the next.

Oriental Furniture

The story of the Asian furniture world is in sharp distinction to the European. Over a
great many centuries styles of design changed little until contact with the Western world
ensued.

INFLUENCE

Design’s Multicultural Influences

That thought could be expanded to include that the hands are where designers’ varied
experiences come together. After all, Urquiola and Forsythe, as well as fellow speaker
Jason Shatilla, have all found that the products they create are profoundly influenced by
their interactions with other cultures. Now, even as she becomes a design world sensation
and her sphere grows ever more international, she brings into her work elements from
everyday Spanish life, such as the hammock she reclines in on the June 2005 cover of
Metropolis. From a cultural point of view Patricia Urquiola feels highly attached to the
Spanish tradition, while from a professional point of view she feels Italian. Becoming his
assistant lecturer. He remains the biggest influence on her work. Nearly every time
she discusses it, she references the late designer. In 2001, with the experience and
influences absorbed from the worlds of art and architecture and above their Milan-based
protagonists, she participated in the international seminars of the Domus Academy
Design Exhibition in Australia, and chaired the jury of the 19th CDIM Award.

Sofas design such as ‘ Tufty-time’ and Fat-fat are both informal yet modular in
design and alluring yet practical in nature. The Fat-fat is a table, container, and

Highlands Seating Collection

Highlands's narrative path is the natural continuation of the language expressed

through Lowland. Once again we interact with a type of "seating" which
communicates through modular systems but also through its unique configurations.
Highlands "focus" element is movement, its possible verticality, a theme which, in
recent years, has been little addressed.

Armrests and backs have two possible positions and their movement is sinuous,
fluid, almost organic, never mechanical or performing. Thanks to the plasticity of
each element modularity is the obvious end result. Surfaces make a strong impact
through their covers, their style, and the extreme detail paid to the seams as well as
the careful attention taken in manufacturing them.

Table-poufs, featuring an impeccable upholstered body and a metal-textured top,

may be found either freestanding or integrated in the configurations. Characteristics
Collection Highlands has completely loose covers except coffeetables (codes 0AL -
OCY) and is not available with pattern repeat fabrics. Seat in wooden frame covered
with stress-resistant polyurethane foam at varied densities and polyester fiber. Back
and armrests, steel, cold foam injected polyurethane with reclining device, covered
with polyester fiber.

Table tops are in DECO stainless steel plate electrochemically stained. Feet, screwed to
the frame, are in black polypropylen. Elements can be linked together with a black ABS
jointing device.
Canasta by Patricia Urquiola

Designer Patricia Urquiola has designed a range of outdoor furniture for B&B Italia’s
Outdoor Collection. Called Canasta (the Spanish word for basket), the range is inspired
by woven patterns and the geometric shapes of Vienna straw. The collection includes
seating, loungers and tables. The seating pieces are woven from 30mm wide polyethylene
plastic fibres in bronze and white. Cushions are made from tough fabrics designed for
outdoor use. The tables are made from varnished steel and topped with ceramic tiles.

The "Bergère" with pouf is inspired by the forms of tradition: it is a padded
armchair with a varnished metal base and upholstered in removable fabric. The
seat has two inclined settings: conversation position and repose position.
