Unless all incidents of crime are reported, the police will think that everything is okay in our town. So that police can be rostered on duty here when they are needed. Closed: The offices of Cabonne Council will be closed on Friday 28 October 2011 for Picnic Day & will reopen at 9am Monday 31 October 2011. For bushfire emergencies, please phone 000. Paul Brierley, Mike Harrison-President RSL Sub branch, Bob Edgerton & Allen Brierley
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM... On 2 July 2011 at the Canowindra Hotel Paul Brierley, descendant of Albert Edgerton gave a very moving speech and handed over some invaluable family and historical artefacts. An excerpt from Pauls speech follows: Albert Edgerton was born in Carcoar 12 November 1912 to Arthur Edgerton and Elizabeth Edgerton. He was educated at Blossom Vale and worked on family property of Edgeleigh which was on the Woodstock Road, Canowindra. He later worked for a Stock and Station agent in town and was known as an outstanding athlete, tennis and cricket player. He signed up for Military Service 4 July 1940 and was assigned to the 9th Australian Division. On the formation of the 2/3rd Anti-tank regiment, Albert was one of the initial members based at Ingleburn. On 16 October Albert married Mavis Brierley, who he had met in 1937, at Canowindras All Saints Anglican Church. It was the first military wedding for the town in WWII. On 14 November the regiment departed from Sydney on the Orion, disembarking at Haifa 18 December 1940. In April 1941 the Regiment arrived in Tobruk. For eight long months, the men of the Tobruk garrison, mostly Australians, withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages, and daily bombings. They endured the deserts searing heat, the bitterly cold nights, and hellish dust storms. They lived in dug-outs, caves, and crevasses. The defenders of Tobruk did not surrender, they did not retreat. Their determination, bravery, and humour, combined with the aggressive tactics of their commanders, became a source of inspiration during some of the wars darkest days. In so doing, they achieved lasting fame as the Rats of Tobruk. The next major attack on the enemy was planned for the 24 October, a night of the full moon. The 9th Battery in which Albert was now a sergeant, was supporting the 2/15 and 2/17th Infantry Battalions. During the days fighting on the 25 October 1942, Alberts gun was subjected to a direct hit from a German Tank and it is understood that he died instantly along with Bdr Cameron and Gnr Follington. Mavis told the story that Alberts photo on her dressing table fell over on that day. There were many brave and courageous men involved in many actions but by 5 November the Battle of El Alamein was won. The cost to the Regiment had been some 107 casualties, including 23 killed. Albert was buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery on 16th November 1942. The reason why we are here today is to carry out Maviss wish that Alberts medals be entrusted to the Canowindra RSL Sub Branch for safekeeping. Allen Brierley (Maviss Brother) and Bob Edgerton (representing the Edgerton Family) presented Alberts medals along with a photo of Albert and history of the 2/3 Anti-Tank regiment Target Tank to Mike Harrison, representative of the Canowindra RSL Sub Branch. Lest we forget.

NATIONAL CARERS W EEK 16-22 OCTOBER Wednesday 18 October is National Carers Day and local girl Felicity Roberts is the proud recipient of the Local Young NSW Carer Award for the Cabonne Council area. The Department of Ageing and Disability Services, in partnership with Carers NSW, the Carers Awards recognise the valuable support people of all ages give to people with a disability, those with chronic health issues or the elderly. There are 748,000 carers in NSW, and it has been estimated that if their work was quantified it would come to over $10 billion a year, DADS Minister Mr Constance said. The hard work of carers often goes unnoticed, but this is one way for the community to recognise the incredible sacrifices they make. The 152 awards, one for each local government area in the state, include people or organisations in any one of eight categories including: Young Carer, Carer Support Group, Senior Carer, Caring Partner, Carer-Friendly Workplace, Caring Family or Parent, Caring Volunteer or Community Member, and Caring School. Each local council will receive support with running a presentation ceremony during Carers Week. To commemorate NSW Carers Week, the Minister also launched a new publication Identifying and Supporting Young Carers designed to specifically raise awareness of people up to 25 years of age who provide care to the most vulnerable in the community. ST E DWARDS FUNDRAISER St Edwards School will be hosting a Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday 1 November as part of their 2011 fundraising. The luncheon is open to all members of the community at a cost of $35 per person for a 3 course meal. Tea and coffee will be supplied on the day, but all other drinks are BYO. The lunch will be held at Riverside Canowindra, the home of Tony Grant and Sarah Cartwright, starting at 12 noon. Snail and Guinea Pig Races will feature throughout the day, as well as prizes for Best Hat, Best Dressed Male and Female. Tickets can be purchased at the Deli Lama or at St Edwards School Office. A bus will be running to and from Riverside and town at a cost of $5, so people can enjoy the day without worrying about driving. For booking or bus enquiries, please call Sarah on 0437 102 006.

After the AGM we will have a discussion on CWA Hall refurbishment. Please bring a plate of finger food to share during our discussion. We would appreciate members attending this night so we all can contribute. RSVP 25/10/11 Penny Nash on 02 6364 0218 or on email at penny2@ipstarmail.com.au

FINNTASTIC! Its hard to believe that Jackie and Geoff Yeos Finns Store has been operating for 12 months now. Opened 13 October 2010, Finns has become a meeting place for coffee for family, friends and community groups, and a haven for finding that unusual gift or unique piece for your home. When Jackie and Geoff first moved to Canowindra after purchasing the landmark building, they wanted to have their retail business in the middle section of the store, and leasing the two large spaces on each side to ventures in keeping with the character of the building. This has been achieved and then some! Less than 12 months of operation, Finns now houses Swinging Bridge Cellar Door and Melissa Barbers studio and gallery. Tom Ward of Swinging Bridge Wines is a direct descendant of TJ Finn the original owner and commissioner of building the premises. Since the opening of Finns, Canowindras Gaskill Street has changed remarkably, and the efforts of shop and building owners need to be applauded for improving and maintaining the uniqueness of our streetscape buildings. Congratulations Jackie, Geoff and family, and hope that the next 12 months are as productive and successful as the last.

SENIOR CRICKET Canowindra won their opening game of the 2011/12 cricket season against Bowling Club on Saturday with Alex Myers starring taking 6/31 off 8 overs. Skipper Nick Guthrie lost the toss and Canowindra were sent into bat. Canowindra got off to the worst possible start losing Pete Guthrie on the fourth ball of the game which led to wickets falling regularly within the first 15 overs. Jake Devlin (13), Matt Beaton (8) and Rohan Toole (3) all lost their wickets in this period. Nick Guthrie and Ian Morrow then joint each other at the crease and runs began to come more freely for Canowindra. Guthrie (34) was caught trying to go over the top which ended the 62 run partnership in an impressive 12 overs for the home side. Wickets again started falling regularly with Alex Myers (2), Shaun Craven (6), Nick Traves (0), Michael Traves (1) and Brett Traves (1) all unable to stay with Morrow (38NO) as Canowindra were all out for 111. In reply to Canowindras 111 Bowling Club started similarly losing an early wicket in the second over. Opening bowlers Nick and Pete Guthrie gave nothing away and were backed up very well by Canowindras top class fielding. Nick Guthrie finished his spell (2/12 off 7) and soon after so did Pete (1/20 off 9) and the skipper threw the ball to spinner Alex Myers. Myers bowled with patience and was rewarded bagging 3 wickets in his opening 5 overs. Nick Traves supported Myers down the other end as the wickets kept falling. Jake Devlin collected to stumpings off Myers eighth over which ended Bowling Clubs innings on 79, 32 runs short of victory. It was a great start to the season for Canowindra with stand out performers being Alex Myers, Nick Guthrie and Ian Morrow. Next week Canowindra has the bye before another home game the weekend after.
