AMMON (son of my relative). AMMONITES . Ben Ammi in Gen. xix.38. Descended from Lot. The people occupied the territory afterwards given to Reuben and Gad, after driving out the Zamzummim (Deut. ii.20). Jabbok was their border on the N. They were nomadic, restless, and predatory, as the Moabites were settled, civilized, and industrious. They opposed the march of Israel to Canaan, and although favored by Moses (Deut. ii.9), yet they were hated and warred with always. They worshipped Moloch, also called Milcom, and Malcham. Saul was made king (the second time) on account of his relief of Jabesh from the Amalekites (I Sam. xi.). Women of this people were in Solomons house. The last mention of them is in I Macc. v. 6, 3043. MOAB (from father) Son of Lot, and founder of a tribe, located E. of the Dead Sea (Gen. xix.37), in the district once occupied by the Emims (Gen. xiv.5; Deut. ii. 11). Zoar, the city of this tribe, was probably N. E. of the Dead Sea, from which the Amorites drove them, and which was given to Reuben. The whole region is undulating, without any high ridges or sudden hills, except near the Dead Sea and Jordan, is covered with sites of ruined towns, on every hill or other convenient place, and its soil is rich. The country must, when prosperous, have presented a scene of plenty and happiness scarcely equalled. The Roman roads have not entirely disappeared, on which there are still milestones of the time of Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, and Severus, with the numbers yet readable. The argument in favor of the truth of prophecy receives great strength from the consideration of the past and present condition of Moab, especially when it is known that the prophets spoke at the time of its greatest prosperity (Is. xv., xvi., xxv., B. C. 720; Jer. xivii., B. C. 600), 12 years before the invasion of Nebuchadnezzar (xxvii.3); and the country was promised to the Arabs of the east (Bedawins), who now occupy it (Ez. xxv. 8-11). Sanballat, the Moabite (Horonite), was a chief among the Jews who laughed the Jews to scorn, after their return from captivity, and when they attempted to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Neh. ii.19). Manasseh, a son of Joiada, the highpriest, married his daughter (xiii.28), and became high-priest of the Samaritans in the temple built by his father-in-law on Mt. Gerizim (Josephus). The Moabites probably had a national record of events, from which the account of Balak and Balaam (Num. xxii.-xxiv) was borrowed. Of Mesha, a king of Moab, an interesting relic has this [1870] year been found by the Palestine Exploration (see KIR HARESH ). MOABITE. Descendant of MOAB (Deut. ii.9). MOABITESS. A female of MOAB (Ruth i. 22). }- (heap of ruins). Benj. (Gen. xii. 8). HAI. E. of Bethel. The second city taken by Joshua in Canaan. Eight miles N. of Jerusalem.2. Burial place of Elon, in Zebulon (Judg. xii.). R. Capital of Moab, on the Arnon (Num. xxi. 1528). The place is still called Rabba, and is 17 miles E. of the Dead Sea, 10 S. of the Arnon, and its ruins occupy a low hill over looking a plain, where are found the remains of two Roman temples and some water-tanks. It was burnt by King Sihon (Is. xv. 1). Rabbath Moab. RNON (swiftnoisy). River forming the boundary between Moab and Ammon, east of the Dead Sea (Num. xxi; Judg. xi.). Fords of Arnon (Is. xvi. 2). Near the Dead Sea the stream is eighty-two feet wide, four feet deep, and flows between almost perpendicular walls of red, brown, and yellow sandstone. Now the Wady Mojeb. (Josh. xiii. 9), Aroer that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river. There is a ruin at the junction of the Lejum with the Arnon, name not known. RER (ruins). Name of several places east of Jordan. 1. On the Arnon, north bank, ten miles from the Dead Sea, now in ruins. A Roman road connected it with cities north and south (Deut. ii. 36; iii. 12, iv. 48; Josh. xii. 2; xiii. 9; Judg. xi. 26; 2 K. x. 33; 1 Chr. v. 8).2. Gad, facing Rabbah (Num. xxxii. 34; Josh xiii. 25). Ayra, six miles east from the Jordan, two miles north of W. Sheriah.3.

BEER 1 (Is. xv. 8). BETH-DIBL-TH}IM (house of the double cake). Moab (Jer. xlviii.22). BETHGA-MUL (house of the weaned, or camel). Moab, in the plains. Um-el Jemail, a few miles south of Busrah, in the Hauran (Rob.). BETH-MEON. House of habitation (Jer. xlviii. 23). B4ZRAH (enclosure; sheepfold). Chief city in Edom (Gen. xxxvi. 33). The modern name is Buseirehlittle Busreh (Rob., ii. 167). It is still a strong fort on a hill-top among the mts., about 25 ms. S. E. of the Dead Sea, half way to Petra (Is. xxxiv. 6, lxiii. 1 Jer. xlix 13, 22; Amos i. 12; Micah ii. 12). It is the centre of a pastoral region.2. In the plain countrythe land of Mishor(Jer. xlviii. 24). E. of the Dead Sea and Lower Jordan are high table-lands, called Belka, where there are three ruins, named Um-el-Jemal (Beth-gamul), Kureiyeh (Kerioth), and Busrah (Bozrah), in the N. E. section, which is a rich district near the Hauran. The walls of Bozrah were 4 ms. in extent, and they did not include the suburbs. Temples, churches, mosques, and a beautiful theatre, are all in ruins; only a strong castle is left entire. CHMOSH (subduer). The national god of the Moabites (1 K. xi.7; Jer. xlviii.7), who were called the people of Chemosh (Num. xxi.29). Also of the Ammonites, though Moloch was afterwards their god (Jer. xlix). Moloch and Chemosh may mean the same god, who might have been also called Baal Peor. Traces of the same worship are found at Babylon, Tyre, and it was introduced among the Hebrews by Solomon, who built a high place on the Mt. of Offense, so named for that act. The Arabs worshiped a black stone as his emblemas a black stone in the Kaaba at Mecca is an emblem now worshiped by all Mohammedans. This idol represented some of the planets: perhaps Saturn. DIBON. E. border of Moab, 3 ms. N. of Arnon river (Num. xxxiv. 45). Rebuilt by the Gadites. Dibon-Gad (xxxii. 34). In Reuben (Josh xiii. 9, 17). The ruins are still called Diban, and are extensive. Dimon (Is. xv.9).2. Judah. DIMONAH (Neh. xi. 25). DIMON, WATERS OF. Streams E. of the Dead Sea. Moab (Is. xv. 9). DIBON . EGLAIM (2 pounds). (Is. xv. 8). Moab. Lost. ELEALEH (Gods hight). E. of Jordan, on the plateau of Moab, 1 m. N. E. of Heshbon, on the summit of a conical hill. Was once strongly fortified; and there are ruins of walls, cisterns, etc. Rebuilt by Reuben (Num. xxxii. 37). HESHBON (Num. xxi. 26). Capital city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, on the western border of the Mishor (Josh xiii. 17), and on the boundary between Reuben and Gad. The ruins are 20 miles east of Jordan, opposite the north end of the Dead Sea, on an insulated hill, scattering over a space more than a mile in circuit, with not a single edifice entire. Many cisterns are whole, and a large reservoir near the base of a hill recalls the text in Cant. vii. 4, Thine eyes are like the pools of Heshbon. The view from the summit is very extensive over the great undulating plateau, embracing the runins of a great number of cities, whose names resemble those of the Scriptures. J}AZER (Yah helps) Amorite town, E. of Jordan in Gilead (Num. xxxii. 1). Rebuilt by Gad, and assigned to the Levites (Merarites, v. 35). Famous for its vineyards (Is. xvi. 8, 9). The land of Jazer; Seir, west of Ammon, north of Heshbon. J}HAZ. JAHA ZA (Josh. xiii. 18). JAHA ZAH . JAH ZAH (Num. xxi.23). A place where the battle was fought between the Israelites and Sihon, king of the Amorites. Jeremiah mentions it (xlviii. 21) as in Moab. Not yet identified. K RIOTH (cities). (Josh. xv. 25). Judah, south. Kuryetein (two cities), 15 miles S. of Hebron. The town from which Judas Iscariot was named.2. A town in Moab, mentioned with Dibon, Bozrah, and others (Jer. xlviii. 24). Now Kureiyeh, six miles east of Busrah, on the west slope of the Hauran. There are many ruined columns; and a cistern having a stone roof supported on a triple row of columns, under which are benches, rising like a theatre. A Greek inscription on one of the benches dates the cistern A. D. 296. The houses had walls four to eight feet thick, of solid basalt, with roofs of slabs of stone reaching across from wall to wall. In Amos ii. 2. Kirioth means the cities of Moab. KIR H}RESH, KIR HARASETH, KIR HARESETH, KIR H RES (brick fort) and KIR MOAB (2 K. iii. 25; Is. xvi. 7; Jer. xlviii. 31, 36). One of the chief fortified cities of Moab (built of brickheres). When Joram, king of Israel, invaded Moab, Kir was the only city not taken, and this was saved by the sacrifice of the king of Moab of his eldest son, on the wall (2 K. iii. 27). Kerak (the modern name) stands on the top of a rocky hill, about 10 miles from the Dead Sea, and 3,000 feet above its level. It was at one time strongly fortified, on the top of a high hill, surrounded on all sides by a deep valley, and again enclosed by mountains higher than the town, from which hights the slingers threw stones into the city, as mentioned in 2 K. iii. 25). The entrances to the ancient city were only two, and tunnelled through the solid rock for a hundred feet, on the north and the south. On the western side stands the citadel, a strong building, built by the Crusaders, containing a chapel, on the walls of which are some rude paintings. On clear days Bethlehem and Jerusalem may be seen from here. Rev. Mr. Klein (of the Palestine Exploration) in 1868 found a Semitic monument in Moab, on which there is an inscription (translated by Mr. Deutsch, of the British Museum), giving an account of many cities named in the Bible, which king Mesha built, among which is Karkha (Kerak). This is the oldest monument in the Phnecian language that is known. It adds to our knowledge of that day. In 2 K. i. 1, is a mention of a rebellion of Moab, which was put down by Israel and Judah. This stone gives particulars, not in the Bible, of the acts of the king of Moab; his conquest of cities; rebuilding others; his religious wars; and that he believed himself divinely guided by the god Chemosh. Almost the whole of the Greek alphabet is found on this stone, such as in use now, and identical with the Phnecian, even including those letters which were supposed to have been added during the Trojan war; and also the Greek letter pslon, which was supposed to have been added later. The most ancient letters are here shown to be the most simplemere outlines. KIRIAH (town). Kerioth, Kartah, Kartan, Kiriathaim (Ez. xxv.9). In Moab. One of the glories of the country, named among the denunciations of Jeremiah (xlviii. I. 23). LUHITH, THE ASCENT OF (Is. xv. 5; Jer. xlviii. 5). A famous pass somewhere in Moab, not yet identified. MEDEBA (quiet waters). In Moab (Num. xxi. 30). Name of the Mishor south of Heshbon (Josh. xiii. 9, 16). The Ammonites were defeated here by Joab, Davids general (I Chr. xix.). Not recorded as possessed by Reuben, and was probably only tributary. It was a strong fortress in the time of the Maccabees (1 Macc. ix. 35; Ant. xiii., i. 4, 9, 1). Ptolemy locates a Medeba between Bostra and Petra. Eusebius and Jerome mention a Christian village east of Medeba. It was a noted bishopric of the patriarchate of Bitira Arabai, and so named in the acts of the Council of Chalcedon (A. D. 451). A large tank, columns, and extensive foundation, on a rocky hill 4 miles S. E. of Heshbon, on the Roman road, mark the site. MEPHAATH (slightly). Moabite city in Reuben, near Heshbon (Josh. xiii. 18; Jer. xlviii. 21), given to the Merarite Levites. The

Romans had a garrison here in the time of Eusebius. Lost. MILCOM (little Molech). The abomination of the children of Ammon (1 K. xi. 7). MISGAB (lofty fort). City of Moab (Jer. xlviii.1). Mizpeh (1 Sam. xxiii. 3.). MOLECH (MELEK , king). The chief god of the Phniciansmentioned as the god of the Ammonites. Probably known to the Israelites before the time of Solomon. Human sacrifices (infants) were offered up to this idol, the victims being slowly burnt to death in the arms of the idol, which were of metel, hollow, and could be heated on the inside. Manasseh sacrificed his son to Molech. Solomon erected an altar to this god on one of the summits of Mount Olivet (see JERUSALEM , p. 150), described in 1 Kings xi. 7. This idol worship being continued, both there and in Tophet, until Josiah abolished it and defiled the altars (2 Kings xxiii. 10, 13). His son Jehoahaz revived this worship (2 Kings xxiii. 32). Molech was worshiped by the Phnician colonies, as at Carthage, where there were at one time sacrificed 200 boys, believing this would relieve the city from a siege. See PHNECIA . NEBO (interpreter of the gods). A Babylonish god. Nebo was the god of learning and letters among the Chaldans, Babylonians, and Assyrians (Is. xlvi. 1; Jer. xlviii.1). Nebo was the Babylonian name of the planet Mercury. The word is in the formation of several names, such as Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuzaradan, Nebushasban, etc. The cut represents the statue of the god set up by Pul, King of Assyria, in the British Museum, London. NIMRAH (pure water). In the land of Jazer, afterward called Beth Nimrah (Num. xxxii. 3, 36); in the tribe of Gad. The name Nimrim (panthers) is found in several localities east of Jordan (Porter). Two miles east of the Jordan, on the road from Jericho to Es Salt, are the ruins near copius fountains (Is. xv. 6; Jer. xlviii. 34). Eusebius says it was a village north of Zoar. If our location of Nimrah is correct, Zoar must have been north of the Dead Sea. RABBAH (greatness). Several places of this name. 1. (Deut. iii. 11). A very strong place east of Jordan; almost the only city of the Ammonites. This may have been the city of the Zuzims, in Ham (Gen. xiv. 5). The sarcophagus of the giant Og was here (Deut. iii. 11). The extensive ruins of Rabbah, now called Amman, are found on both sides of a perennial stream, the banks and bed also being paved through the city, about 19 miles southeast of Es Salt, and 22 miles from Jordan, in a long valley, a branch of the Wady Zerka. The theatre is very large and well preserved. Roman and Christian buildings are also found. Some of the columns are five feet in diameter. Ezekiels prophesy is literally fulfilled, and the place has become a stable for camels and a couching place for the flocks (xxv. 5). David took the city by his general, Joab, when Uriah the Hittite was killed (2 Sam. xi.). It was named Philadelphia by Ptolemy Philadelphus, B. C. 250. Coins of this city are extant, bearing the figure of Astarte. The Christian Church is still in excellent preservation.2. The city of AR was also called Rabbath Moab.3. A city of Judah (Josh. xv. 60). Lost.4. In Josh. xi. 8, Zidon is called Zidon Rabbah, translated great Zidon. RABBATH. Of the children of Ammon (Deut. iii. 11). SHEBAM (Num. xxxii. 3). East of Jordan. Given to Reuben. It was a land for cattle. SHIBMAH or SIBMAH . SHIBMAH (Num. xxxii. 38). Shebam, east of Jordan. SIBMAH (Josh. xiii. 19). East of Jordan, in Reuben. SHEBAM . Lost. ZOAR (little), (Gen. xiv. 2, 8). One of the oldest cities of Canaan. First called BELA . When the cities of the plain were destroyed, Zoar was spared as a refuge for Lot (ib. xix. 22, 30). Zoar was seen by Moses from the top of Pisgah (Deut. xxxiv. 3). Following Josephus (Ant. I. 11,&, 4), the Crusaders, and later travelers, Zoar was on the LISAN , a promontory on the E. side of the Dead Sea, and now seen in extensive ruins in the lower end of Wady Kerak. Palms once flourished here so abundantly as to give it the name of City of Palms

(William of Tyre, xii. 30). Some have supposed Zoar to have been much nearer to Jericho, and on the E. of Jordan, in the Wady Seir, near Nimrim.

The Births of Moab and Ben-Ammi

Gen 19:30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. Moses delivered the entire book of Deuteronomy to the Israelites in in the land of Moab in 1452 B.C. per Yahvehs instructions. The rest of the passages cited in Deuteronomy specifically mention Moab, Ammon, the Moabites, or the Ammonites.

Jdg 3:1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; Jdg 3:2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof; Jdg 3:3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath. Jdg 3:4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD , which He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. Jdg 3:5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: Jdg 3:6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. Jdg 3:7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD , and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves. Jdg 3:8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years. Jdg 3:9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD , the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Calebs younger brother. Jdg 3:10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim. Jdg 3:11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. Jdg 3:12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD : and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD . Jdg 3:13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees. Jdg 3:14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. Jdg 3:15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD , the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab. Jdg 3:16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh. Jdg 3:17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man. Jdg 3:18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present. Jdg 3:19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. Jdg 3:20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat. Jdg 3:21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly: Jdg 3:22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out. Jdg 3:23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them. Jdg 3:24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber. Jdg 3:25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. Jdg 3:26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

Jdg 3:27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them. Jdg 3:28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over. Jdg 3:29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man. Jdg 3:30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years. Jdg 3:31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

Israelites Worship Gods of Moab and Ammon

Jdg 10:1 And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim. Jdg 10:2 And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir. Jdg 10:3 And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years. Jdg 10:4 And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead. Jdg 10:5 And Jair died, and was buried in Camon. Jdg 10:6 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD , and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD , and served not Him. Jdg 10:7 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon. Jdg 10:8 And that year they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. Jdg 10:9 Moreover the children of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed. Jdg 10:10 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD , saying, We have sinned against Thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim. Jdg 10:11 And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? Jdg 10:12 The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to Me, and I delivered you out of their hand. Jdg 10:13 Yet ye have forsaken Me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more. Jdg 10:14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. Jdg 10:16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD : and His soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. Jdg 10:17 Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh. Jdg 10:18 And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Jephthah and the Ammonites

Jdg 11:1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah. Jdg 11:2 And Gileads wife bare him sons; and his wifes sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our fathers house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. Jdg 11:3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him. Jdg 11:4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel. Jdg 11:5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: Jdg 11:6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my fathers house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? Jdg 11:8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. Jdg 11:9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? Jdg 11:10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words. Jdg 11:11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh. Jdg 11:12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land? Jdg 11:13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably. Jdg 11:14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: Jdg 11:15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: Jdg 11:16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh; Jdg 11:17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh. Jdg 11:18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab. Jdg 11:19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place. Jdg 11:20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. Jdg 11:21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. Jdg 11:22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. Jdg 11:23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it? Jdg 11:24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess. Jdg 11:25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them, Jdg 11:26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of

Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time? Jdg 11:27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him. Jdg 11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD , and said, If Thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Jdg 11:31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering. Jdg 11:32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands. Jdg 11:33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. Jdg 11:34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. Jdg 11:35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD , and I cannot go back. Jdg 11:36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD , do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. Jdg 11:37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. Jdg 11:38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. Jdg 11:39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel, Jdg 11:40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year. Ephraim Upset With Jephthah Over War With Ammonites Jdg 12:1 And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire. Jdg 12:2 And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands. Jdg 12:3 And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me? Jdg 12:4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites. Jdg 12:5 And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; Jdg 12:6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand. Jdg 12:7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead. Jdg 12:8 And after him Ibzan of Beth-lehem judged Israel. Jdg 12:9 And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. Jdg 12:10 Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Beth-lehem. Jdg 12:11 And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.

Jdg 12:12 And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun. Jdg 12:13 And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel. Jdg 12:14 And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years. Jdg 12:15 And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.

Ruth the Moabitess

Ruth was Davids ancestor. The commandment in Deuteronomy 23:3 prohibiting a Moabite from entering into the congregation is masculine, thus excluding Ruth. She was a daughter of Abraham. Ruth chose to stay with Yahveh and Naomi, while her sister-in-law chose to return to her gods.

Rth 1:1 Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-lehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. Rth 1:2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. Rth 1:3 And Elimelech Naomis husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. Rth 1:4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years. Rth 1:5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. Rth 1:6 Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited His people in giving them bread. Rth 1:7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah. Rth 1:8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mothers house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. Rth 1:9 The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. Rth 1:10 And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. Rth 1:11 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Rth 1:12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons; Rth 1:13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me. Rth 1:14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. Rth 1:15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law. Rth 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Rth 1:17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. Rth 1:18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. Rth 1:19 So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi? Rth 1:20 And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the ALMIGHTY hath dealt very bitterly with me. Rth 1:22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest. Rth 2:1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husbands, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. Rth 2:2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. Rth 2:3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. Rth 2:4 And, behold, Boaz came from Beth-lehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee. Rth 2:5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this? Rth 2:6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: Rth 2:7 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house. Rth 2:8 Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens: Rth 2:9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn. Rth 2:10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger? Rth 2:11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. Rth 2:12 The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under Whose wings thou art come to trust. Rth 2:13 Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. Rth 2:14 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. Rth 2:15 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: Rth 2:16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. Rth 2:17 So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. Rth 2:18 And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed. Rth 2:19 And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The mans name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz. Rth 2:20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD , Who hath not left off His kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen. Rth 2:21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest. Rth 2:22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. Rth 2:23 So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law. Rth 3:1 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Rth 3:4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. Yahveh Defeats the Moabites and Ammonites in Jehoshaphats Reign

An Ammonite and a Moabite Conspire Against Joab

2Ch 24:24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash. 2Ch 24:25 And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings. 2Ch 24:26 And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.

So much did the children of Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third. 2Ch 27:6 So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God. 2Ch 27:7 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. 2Ch 27:8 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. 2Ch 27:9 And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.

Ezr 9:1 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. Nehemiah 4

Jer 25:29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by My name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Jer 25:30 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter His voice from his holy habitation; He shall mightily roar upon His habitation; He shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. saying, Jer 27:2 Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck, Jer 27:3 And send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyrus, and to the king of Zidon, by the hand of the messengers which come to Jerusalem unto Zedekiah king of Judah; Jer 27:4 And command them to say unto their masters, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say unto your masters; Jer 27:5 I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. Jer 27:6 And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him. Jer 27:7 And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his sons son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him. Jer 27:8 And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, saith the LORD , with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand. Jer 27:9 Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: Jer 27:10 For they prophesy a lie unto you, to remove you far from your land; and that I should drive you out, and ye should perish. Jer 27:11 But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD ; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.

Jeremiah 40
Jer 40:1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD , after that Nebu-zar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon. Jer 40:2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place. Jer 40:3 Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as He hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD , and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. Jer 40:4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go. Jer 40:5 Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go. Jer 40:6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land. Jer 40:7 Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon; Jer 40:8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. Jer 40:9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. Jer 40:10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken. heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan; Jer 40:12 Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much. Jer 40:13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, Jer 40:14 And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not. Jer 40:15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? Jer 40:16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Jeremiah 41 - Ishmael Departs to Go Over to the Ammonites

Jer 41:9 Now the pit wherein Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain. Jer 41:10 Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, even the kings daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebu-zar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites. Jer 41:11 But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, Jer 41:12 Then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. Jer 41:13 Now it came to pass, that when all the people which were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad. Jer 41:14 So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, and went unto Johanan the son of Kareah. Jer 41:15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the Ammonites. Jer 41:16 Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from Gibeon: Jer 41:17 And they departed, and dwelt in the habitation of Chimham, which is by Beth-lehem, to go to enter into Egypt, Jer 41:18 Because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor in the land.

Jeremiah 48The Moabites

Note in verse 47: Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD.

Jer 48:1 Against Moab thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed. Jer 48:2 There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee. Jer 48:3 A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction. Jer 48:4 Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. Jer 48:5 For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry

of destruction. Jer 48:6 Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness. Jer 48:7 For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. Jer 48:8 And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken. Jer 48:9 Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein. Jer 48:10 Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood. Jer 48:11 Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed. Jer 48:12 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD , that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles. Jer 48:13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth-el their confidence. Jer 48:14 How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war? Jer 48:15 Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, Whose name is the LORD of hosts. Jer 48:16 The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast. Jer 48:17 All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod! Jer 48:18 Thou daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds. Jer 48:19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done? Jer 48:20 Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled, Jer 48:21 And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath, Jer 48:22 And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim, Jer 48:23 And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon, Jer 48:24 And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near. Jer 48:25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the LORD . Jer 48:27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy. Jer 48:29 We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart. Jer 48:30 I know his wrath, saith the LORD ; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it. Jer 48:31 Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kir-heres. Jer 48:32 O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage. Jer 48:33 And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting. Jer 48:34 From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate. Jer 48:35 Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD , him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods. Jer 48:36 Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and Mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished.

Jer 48:37 For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth. Jer 48:38 There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the LORD . Jer 48:39 They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him. Jer 48:40 For thus saith the LORD ; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab. Jer 48:41 Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty mens hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. Jer 48:42 And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the LORD . Jer 48:43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD . Jer 48:44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD . Jer 48:45 They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. Jer 48:46 Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives. Jer 48:47 Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the LORD . Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

Jeremiah 49The Ammonites

Note in verse 6: And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon. Very similar to the prophecy concerning Moab in Jeremiah 48:47.

Jer 49:1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD ; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities? Jer 49:2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD , that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD . Jer 49:3 Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together. Jer 49:4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me? Jer 49:5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth. Jer 49:6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD .

Ezekiel 21
Eze 21:19 Also, thou son of man, appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city. Eze 21:20 Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced. Eze 21:21 For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver. Eze 21:22 At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort. Eze 21:23 And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken. Eze 21:28 And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering: Eze 21:29 Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end. Eze 21:30 Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity. Eze 21:31 And I will pour out Mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of My wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy. Eze 21:32 Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it.

Ezekiel 25

Eze 25:6 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast clapped thine hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all thy despite against the land of Israel; Eze 25:7 Behold, therefore I will stretch out Mine hand upon thee, and will deliver thee for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut thee off from the people, and I will cause thee to perish out of the countries: I will destroy thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD . Eze 25:8 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Moab and Seir do say, Behold, the house of Judah is like unto all the heathen; Eze 25:9 Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim, Eze 25:10 Unto the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations. Eze 25:11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab; and they shall know that I am the LORD .
