A Sunday School teacher asked her children Why should you be quiet during the sermon?

One child replied Because people are sleeping. In a former church, the Cobb family owned and operated a dairy farm of about 75 cows. Everyday, including Sunday, Mr. Cobb was up at 4:00 a.m. and milking by 5:00 a.m. When sermon time came, his eyes closed automatically. He was embarrassed about it and would apologize often. Of course I understood and would joke about it. One Sunday he asked me What words should I pray to prepare for your sermon? I said How about, Now I lay me down to sleep? Listening is always important whether it is a sermon, your spouse or your conscience. I once read that God gave us two ears and one mouth because we should listen twice as much as we talk. Jesus said, He that has ears to hear, let him hear. Just consider the many ways God has spoken to people. In the Bible there was a burning bush, a ladder to heaven, a mans donkey, graffiti on a wall and a baby in Bethlehem. Nothing in my life has been that dramatic. For me, God speaks mostly through scripture, prayer, and people I trust. But regardless of how God speaks, I must listen. Some Christians travel faster than the speed of sound. They are so busy doing they cant hear Gods voice. Thats why God says, Be still and know that I am God. If you fall asleep like a dairy farmer in church, so be it. Youll just be a little more rested. And for all you dairy farmers here at Eastmont, I know that when those eyes are closed, you are simply praying for your Pastor. Ill see you Sunday.
