paragraphs since those have nothing to do with the integral arguments of the paper. I'm also considering including a section immediately after the introduction titled a woman's place in America, a brief history but I'm unsure if it'll be relevant. Thesis: Social anxiety over changing societal structures offered women opportunities for empowerment but inertial barriers prevented women from mobilizing a true equality movement. Paragraph 1: Female public agency in America was at an all time high during World War One. They were working, and many of them were able to escape from the homes of their fathers and husbands to engage in the public sphere. Paragraph 2: The return of the soldiers and the horrors of World War One had a chilling effect on progressive movements in American society which negatively impacted women. Women in the Labor Force Paragraph 3: What were the positive and negative aspects of increased labor representation for women? Being able to make their own money was an avenue to empowerment but women now had to deal with the increased scrutiny of men in close quarters. Paragraph 4: How does the intersection of race and class affect women in the public space? The constructions of racial difference during the period disrupted female solidarity. Women and purchasing power Paragraph 5: Economic momentum from World War One and mass production infrastructure create a new market for domestic products for women. Paragraph 6: Advertising fragments 'the feminine consumer' into separate economic classes for maximum sell-ability. Paragraph 7: Products like cigarettes offered women the opportunity to reject old norms of femininity and create new identities through purchasing. Paragraph 8: Having access to a vehicle was both a physical escape from the home but also an escape from the prescriptive identity which is intrinsically tied to it. Paragraph 9: Narratives of 'the road' offered liberatory escapes from static gender roles but also could serve to reintrench normativity. Women and the perception of Beauty in Society Paragraph 10: What is the beauty myth & how does it expand during the 1920s?

Paragraph 11: How do societal images of beauty affect African American women in the 1920s? Paragraph 12: African American Women were able to reclaim positive images of beauty by opening their own salons. Paragraph 13: Corsets are a tool of capitalism to restrict womens liberty and commodify the female body. Women and public sexuality Paragraph 14: There is puritanical resistance to women possessing their own sexual agency which is symbolized by the changing fashion of the times. Paragraph 15: The seizure of sexuality from societal norms posed a risk of objectification in a time of changing images and production of images. Paragraph 16: Advertisers used the idea of a masculine lesbian figure to scare women into consumerism. Paragraph 17: Synthesizing these characteristics of society's perception of women shows with each new gain in rights and agency a new set of oppressive restrictions develop.
