The meaning of the thousand holy names given in this book, is based on the glorius commentary, Bhagavad Guna Darpana of Sri Parashara Bhatta. Our sincere thanks to Manalur Veeravalli Sri U Ve Ramanujachariar Swamy, Gnyana Bhakti Bhushana Sri U Ve Satyamurthy Iyengar Swamy, Dr Sri U Ve V V Ramanujam Swamy, whose books on Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama were of immense help in compiling this work. We also thank Smt. Rekha for her timely help in translating the tamil version of this book to English. We do not find words to express our gratitude to Sri Rajan of RNR Printers, without whose untiring efforts this service of publishing the calendar and this book in large numbers within a short time would not have been possible. Bhtabhvana - Nourisher and nurturer of all His creations; hence the Supreme Master. Pttm - The Purest Self ; One who is untainted by defects of the sentient and the non-sentient, that constitute His body. Paramtm - The Supreme Soul unlike all others who have. Him as their inner soul, He has no other superior inner soul. Muktnm Paramgati - He, who is the final Goal, that is desired and reached by all the liberated souls. Avyaya - He, who does not part with anyone. One who has reached Him in Vaikuntam does not go back to the cycle of birth. Purua - One who joyously bestows on His liberated souls the perennial enjoyment of His qualities and Himself; Donor par excellence. Sk - One who witnesses with Supreme delight His liberated souls enjoying the Eternal Bliss He has bestowed on them. Ktraja - The knower of the Eternal land where the released souls enjoy Him.

Pradhnapurua vara - Supreme Master of the primordial matter and the jivas bound in it. Nrasimhavapu - He, who incarnated as the unique half man half lion. rmn - One with the lustrous man and lion forms beautifully combined. Keava - One with lovely locks of hair and mane. Puruottama - The Supreme amongst the individual souls categorized as bound, liberated and ever-free. Sarva - Sustainer, who is all-in-all. arva - Remover of evils of all that are His body.

Sthu - One who is steadfast in blessing everlasting benefits to His devotees. Bhtdi - He, who is eagerly resorted to by all as the Supreme goal. Nidhiravyaya - One who is the inexhaustible treasure. Sambhava - He, who is hidden like treasure and manifests Himself at the appropriate time to His devotees. Bhvana - Savior who, during His manifestations, rejuvenates all by dispelling their obstacles. Bhart - Supporter, who nourishes His devotees by giving them His very self. Prabhava - One whose birth is exalted and of sublime nature that mere contemplation of Him destroys all sins. Prabhu - The All-powerful who even during a fellow-human incarnate, granted salvation, to His foe iupla and His devout gopi Chintayanti. vara - The Supreme ruler who controls all even if He takes an ordinary and simple form. Svayambh - He who manifests Himself by His own free Will and Grace, and not as the result of actions.

ambhu - One who pleases His devotees with his Auspicious attributes and Ever appealing form. ditya - Resplendant Lord who resides in the interior of the Sun, lustrous like molten gold. Pukarka - The Lotus-eyed, this being His sole identity as Sovereign Lord of the entire Universe. Mahsvana - He, who is of sacred sound, praised by the Vdas. Andinidhana - He who is Ever-young, one without beginning or end. Dht - The Creator who created Brahma for furtherance of creation. Vidht - He who nurtured and produced Brahma first. Dhturuttama - One who is far superior to Brahma. Aprameya - One who cannot be defined, explained, measured by the senses; even to the Gods. Hkea - The controller of the sense-organs of one and all, Supreme blend of Happiness, Prosperity and Plenty. Padmanbha - He who in His navel the lotus that is the birthplace of Brahma. Amaraprabhuh - The powerful Lord of the gods to whom He delegates their duties of creation and destruction.

Vivakarm - The Originator of all actions before and after creation of Brahma. Manu - He, who wills; The Great Thinker who created this Universe with just a small part of His conscience. Tva - The Chiseller who carves out the different forms and names of all beings in this universe. Sthaviha - He, who expands during creation the sentient and non-sentient, that are His body and were atomic during deluge, into the beings created by Him. Sthavira - He, who is Ever existent; Always consistent and constant. Dhruva - He, who is Invincible, uses His form to create, but whos innate nature does not change. Agrhyah - One who is beyond the realisation of all; who cannot be enticed by intelligence. vata - Tireless in His actions of creation, protection and destruction, He is Eternal. Ka - He, who is always in a state of Bliss, indulging in His three roles as play. Lohitka - One with eyes red like the beautiful lotus in fresh bloom, caused by these activities.

Pratardana - The Destroyer who consumes and consolidates within Himself the entire universe during the deluge. Prabhta - He, who is affluent, enriched with the eternal Bliss of His Abode, even when all the worlds disappear during the deluge. Trikakuddhma - The Radiant One who has r Vaikunam, thrice bigger than the transitory temporary world as His permanent Abode, . Pavitram - He, who is Purity incarnate without flaws. Magalam param - One who is the Embodiment of Supreme Auspiciousness, diametrically opposite to all that is of a blemish. na - The universal Supreme Ruler. Prada - The life-giver; Giver of strength to the ever-free, souls to experience His glory and serve Him. Pra - He who is Life, is dear like Life to the ever-free souls whose minds are rivetted in Him. Jyea - One who is the First and foremost; and hence the oldest. rea - He, who is praised by the ever-free souls.

Prajpati - Lord of the ever-free souls in vaikuntam, who are superior to the bound souls; He willingly accepts their service. Hirayagarbha - He, who lives in a sublime Eternal Abode that is pure and lustrous like gold. Bhgarbha - Protector of His divine spouse Bhma Devi (Earth) like a child in a womb; rescuing Her from under the seas as Varha incarnate. Mdhava - He, who is inseparable from His consort Lakshmi. Madhusdhan - The slayer of the demon Madhu ; Destroyer of all evil forces. vara - The Absolute Ruler whose Will is true and beyond impediments. Vikram - He, who is most Powerful and capable of clearing all opposition. Dhanv - The Unparalleled wielder of the bow rga, befitting His unsurpassed valor. Medhv - One who has the most powerful knowledge; The Omniscient, befitting His Glory. Vikrama - He, who has Garuda, personification of the Vedas, as His exclusive mount, to move about at His Will and pleasure. Krama - One who is highly prosperous in Paramapada, His Celestial Abode, The All-pervading God.

Anuttama - He, who is unsurpassed. Durdhara - Unfathomable like the ocean, Lord of the Universe, cannot be influenced, disturbed or conquered. Ktaja - He, who is grateful to His devotees however meager their worship. Kti - One who kindles the virtuous acts of His devotees. tmavn - The Supreme Master, who possesses the souls who perform Dharma as wealth. Sura - The Lord of all the gods including Brahma.

He is the means and the end; He is the medicine and the feast

Vivaret - One who is the seed, root cause and usherer of the Universe; He creates the senses for His service alone. Aha - One who never forsakes anyone; who is like the Day that awakens people from ignorance.

Samvatsara - He,who lives in the heart of His devotees to lend them His helping hand; Giver of intellect for them to reach His shore. Vyla - One who assures and accepts His devotees by sending His representatives to them. Pratyaya - One who provides confidence to His devotees to whom He is Everreliable. Sarva darana - He, who displays Himself with all His Glory to His devotees. Aja - He who removes all obstacles in the path to reach Him for His devotees. Sarvvara - One who reaches all who surrender to Him without analyzing their qualification. Sidda - He, who is Himself an established, independant means to reach Him. Siddhi - He, who is the result of all virtues performed.

100. Sarvdi - The Supreme Source for granting to His devotees, bounties high and low as sought by them. 101. Acyuta - He, who never separates Himself from His devotees who surrender to Him.

102. Vkapi - He who manifested as the Varha incarnate, a personification of virtues. 103. Ameytm - He, whose Grace (what He bestows) to His devotees is beyond measure. 104. Sarvayoga vinissta - One who is attained by all means. 105. Vasu - One who dwells in the hearts of His devotees, even if their love for Him is a mere fragment. 106. Vasuman - He, who cherishes His devotees as a valuable treasure. 107. Satya - One who is well disposed to fulfill all the wishes of His devotees. 108. Samtm - The Impartial one, whose treats all His devotees without discrimination. 109. Sammita - He, who is subservient to His devotees. 110. Sama - One who treats all His devotees equally; who is of uniform disposition, not differentiating them as old or new. 111. Amogha - One with whom contact is never futile; bhakti is never fruitless. 112. Puarkka - One who is like the eye to the residents of pundarika (ri Vaikuntam). 113. Vakarm - One whos righteous actions induce us in the right path. 114. Vkti - One who is an embodiment of dharma; cool and refreshing like elixir. 115. Rudra - One who moves His devotees to tears (of joy) ending their misery.

Bahuir - He, who is multi-headed like Adisesha. Babhru - The Supporter, in His form as Adisesha, bears the entire world. Vivayoni - One who embraces His devotees to Himself. ucirav - He, who listens to the pure words of His devotees in the form of their prayers. 120. Amta - The Bestower of liberation, who is inexhaustively sweet to His devotees who are never satiated seeing Him. 121. vatasthu - He, who is Eternal and steadfast, unlike the elixir of the Gods which can be tasted only once. 122. Varroha - One who is the most supreme object of attainment.

Six Qualities
123. Mahtap - One who possesses Infinite knowledge. 124. Sarvaga - He, who has the supreme strength to conslidate in Him, all that has been retracted during deluge. 125. Sarvavit - The All-Bountiful; He who obtains all back again, through re-creation after the deluge. 126. Bhnu - He, who is unchanged even during this creation.

127. Vivaksena - One who has the power to hold an army for the protection of the universe. 128. Janrdana - The Splendorous one who destroys the wicked without external aid.

The threefold duties of the three


129. Veda - One who grants the vedas. 130. Vedavit - He, who fully and correctly comprehends the Vdas. 131. Avyaga - He who knows completely the six limbs of the Vedas - phonetics, grammar, metrics, lexicon, astronomy/astrology and manual of rituals. 132. Vedga - One who has the Vdas as His body. 133. Vedavit - One who is realised throught he vedas; One who makes people practice the rites in the Vdas and and hence attain Him. 134. Kavi - One who assimilates everything beyond ordinary perception with exceptional fore-sight. 135. Lkdhyaka - Lord Superintendent, who closely observes the subjects in the world who are eligible to practice Dharma. 136. Surdhyaka - He who perceives the gods who are appeased by the participants of Dharma.

137. Dharmdhyaka - Master of dharma, One who knows its fruit and grants it. 138. Ktkta - The Granter of fruits of this world as well as that of the Eternal world.

The four qualities of the four


139. Caturtm - One whose Self has a four-fold manifestation as Vsudva, Sakaaa, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. 140. Caturvyha - One who is in the four mental stages of development of the worshipper state of being awake, dream, deep sleep and complete realisation. 141. Caturdamra - One who, as Paravsudva, has four canine teeth (identity of the Supreme soul). 142. Chaturbhuja - One with four arms in the transcendental form of Paravsudva. 143. Bhrjiu - The Ever Resplendent, Radiant one to those who worship Him. 144. Bhojanam - One who is the object of enjoyment to His devotees, like food that is as appetizing as ambrosia. 145. Bhokt - The Enjoyer, who rejoices the offerings made by His devotees out of pure Love. 146. Sahiu - One who forgives readily the sins committed knowingly and unknowingly by His devotees.

147. Jagaddija - He, who is the first born of the Trinity, as Mah Viu. 148. Anagha - The Sinless, untainted one even if born in this earthly world. 149. Vijaya - He, who is Victory Incarnate, and makes Brahma and Rudra victorious in their duties of creation and destruction. 150. Jet - The Conqueror who makes Brahma and Rudra carry out the duties ordained by Him. 151. Vivayoni - The Cause of the Universe in its emergence, sustenance and dissolution. 152. Punarvasu - One who lives as the Inner soul of Brahma, Rudra and all other gods.

153. Upendra - One who appeared as the last of the dityas, as Aditis twelth son; the younger brother of Indra. 154. Vmana - The Dwarf Incarnate who bestows happiness to those who worship Him. 155. Prmu - One who immediately grew tall and, as Trivikrama, measured the world with His feet. 156. Amogha - One whose acts are never fruitless; He extended His sublime Grace to Bali and Indr at the same time, without discrimination.

157. uchi - The Purest one who does not expect anything in return for all that He does and gives. 158. rjita - One with the power to subdue Mahabalis son, Marici. 159. Atndra - One who is superior to Indra even though younger than him. 160. Sagraha - He, who is easily comprehended by genuine devotees. 161. Sarga - He, who grew as huge as Trivikrama to make His lotus feet accessible to His devotees. 162. Dhttm - One who is a balm to all the souls by giving Himself to support them. 163. Niyama - He, who subdues the enemies of His devotees. 164. Yama - Remover of obstacles to His devotees; The Inner Controller.

165. Vedya - He, who can be realized by everyones senses due to His simple manifestations. 166. Vaidya - One who knows the art of releaving His devotees of birth. 167. Sad yog - One who is always awake to protect His devotees. 168. Vrah - The slayer of strong men of wicked nature who try to hinder devotees, by evil and false arguments, from reaching Him.

169. Mdhava - The Proclaimer of the true knowledge of Himself as the Supreme Being. 170. Madhu - One who is like honey to His true devotees.

171. Atndriya - He, who is beyond comprehension by the sense organs which are our means of comprehension. 172. Mahmya - One who conceals (envelops) Himself in My, the blinding screen, from those who are not devoted to Him. 173. Mahotsha - He, who is of great enthusiasm. 174. Mahbala - The Omnipotent; one with Immense power, without need for external assistance. 175. Mahbuddhi - He, of infinite knowledge who comprehends all things, at all places, at all times, at once. 176. Mahavrya - One without change. 177. Mah akti - One with utmost Power to mould prakti which is part of His own body to create the world, like the spider that secretes its web and finally consumes it again.

178. Mah dyuthi - The Ever Splendorous one, luminous to the extent that the suns radiance is small in comparison. 179. Anirdeyavapu - He, who possesses a Super Form of incomparable Excellence that defies description. 180. rmn - The most Beautiful one, adorned with an array of jewels of rare Excellence, worthy of His divine body. 181. Ameytm - He, who is the Supreme Majesty, unfathomable like the deep ocean.

188. Surnanda - One who delights the Devas by dispelling their distress. 189. Govinda - The Benefactor; Recipient of praise from the devas. 190. Govidmpati - The Lord of those who know the Vdas. 191. Marci - Ray of Light who shows His impeccable form to even those who are blind from birth. 192. Damana - He, who is the Dispeller of the sufferings of worldly life with His radiance. 193. Hamsa - He, the Incarnate of the pure Swan. 194. Supraa - One possessing charming feathered wings, that can lead all souls to the other shore across the ocean of samsra.

Matsyavatar (The Fish manifestation)


211. Guru gurutama - One who taught Brahma; Preceptors Preceptor (teachers Teacher). 212. Dhma - Savior, as Matsya, during the deluge,steered the boat carrying the seeds of all mobile and stationary objects; abode of the sentient and non-sentient. 213. Satya - Personification of Truth, who is true to His devotees like Manu who sought refuge in Him during the deluge. 214. Satyaparkrama - One of unfailing valor; genuinely gallant to Manu. 215. Nimia - One whose eyes are closed towards the enemies of His devotees. 216. Animia - He, who always keeps His eyes open to bless His devotees. 217. Sragv - He who is always adorned with the garland Vaijayanti, made of five divine gems - pearl,ruby, emerald, sapphire and diamond. 218. Vcaspati - The Lord of Speech, since He explained the Vedas through Matsyapura. 219. Udradh - He, of broad disposition for the welfare of all. 220. Agra - One who leads His devotees to the highest abode, Sri Vaikuntam. 221. Grman - He who leads His devotees to the liberated and ever-free souls in Vaikuntam.

222. rmn - One whose wealth is His lotus eyes; Nurtures all by his sight, like a fish nurturing its fry. 223. Nyya - The Just one, who does what is right for His devotees. 224. Net - The Great Redeemer who fulfills the requests of His devotees, as in the Fish incarnate. 225. Samraa - One who performs acts that are sweet to His devotees.

233. Sampramardana - The Dispeller of the darkness of Tamgua, for those who take refuge in Him. 234. Aas-samvartaka - One who swirls the discus of time, that has divisions such as day, fortnight and month. 235. Vahni - The Supporter of The Universe in the form of the supreme ether. 236. Anila - The Bestower of life-breath (prana vayu). 237. Dharadhara - The Supreme ruler, Bearer of the Earth by His Divine Will. 238. Suprasda - The Granter of favors to those who request Him. 239. Prasanntm - The Ever-Serene one who is Calm and Composed as He is free from unfulfilled desires. 240. Vivask - One who creates the Universe out of sheer kindness, paying no heed to the flaws and crimes of the souls. 241. Vivabhugvibhu - One spread throughout the universe as The Universal Protector 242. Satkart - He, who honors the good. 243. Satkta - He, who is worshipped by the good; Lord Rm accepted offerings by abari, an earnest devotee. 244. Sdhu - One who fulfills whatever His devotees desire; be it as a Messenger or a Charioteer.

255. Siddhida - Bestower of eight super-human powers - to become miniscule, huge, light, stout and ability to read, persuade and control peoples minds. 256. Siddhisdhana - He who has the means to reach Him (bhakti) itself as a sweet one. 257. Vh - One who shines in the form of Dharma, who makes the day the devotees reach Him an auspicious one. 258. Vabha - He, who showers His cool nectarean Grace on those who are scorched by the heat of worldly bondage. 259. Viu - The who pervades all by showering His Grace on those who seek Him. 260.
