Executive Summary

The highest incidence of poverty occurs in the rural areas and we believe that the very people who are feeding us, the farmers who work tirelessly to provide us with food, don't have to remain poor. We, Team CPMPC of YMA Season 5, has been tasked to do a wide range of Social Marketing efforts for a poverty alleviation program of the Municipality of Consolacion. We are campaigning to support Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan. It is a project which aims to train farmers about modern fruit and vegetable production. Basically, farmer beneficiaries from all over go the farm demo site in Consolacion to be trained through the education capabilities of Harbest Agribusiness Inc. The project is currently recieved mobilization funding from SM Foundation Inc. for the project operating costs which includes training and transportation allowance of the trainees. We aimed for great social impact and awareness by tapping on the social media applications that most people are using today. Our elaborate Social Marketing Plan revolves around a lot of network connections, ad campaigns being disseminated through the new media and raise all forms of support possible since our farmer beneficiaries will need farming tools, supplies, fertilizers, seeds and seedlings to be used in their respective farms. Our mission is to 10,000 pesos or signatures of commitment and 1,000 Facebook Page supporters, and create a social impact and raise awareness and sympathy to our farmer heroes. Thus, we branded the campaign as "iluvfarmers" to unify the values and realize our visions. The logo design, art direction of the campaigns, messages, and brand promise have been consistent as an entity on and offline. We had set up social media accounts for greater reach and as of October 18, 2011, our Facebook Fan Page (http://facebook.com/ iluvfarmers) now has over 981 supporters and we had a 108% increase in Facebook Post Feedback Score meaning people actually not only cared enough to read but also liked, shared and commented on photos and statuses we make. Our Twitter account (http://twitter.com/ iluvfarmers) has engaged in conversations to 80 followers, got promoted 21 times by our followers, and gained the support of personalities online like Janette Toral, Anna Oposa, Bettina del Rosario on Twitter The iluvfarmers Campaign was featured on 19 websites and even made it to the countrys premier blogging institution, CebuBloggers.com. Our blog (http:// iluvfarmers.blogspot.com) now has 218 pageviews as it publishes life stories of selected beneficiaries and updates regarding the project. We also have asked the endorsement from prominent Cebuano youth personalities and ordinary citizens to become the face of iluvfarmers in a series of ad campaigns that went abuzz online. Also we have gathered around 1,261 signatures of commitment from the students in different colleges and universities and have pooled together Php 3,225.00 in donations.

Background of Supported Program/Project

Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan is a season-long training for vegetable farming among the Filipino farmers initiated by the SM foundation together with Harbest Agribusiness Corporation, and jointly implemented with the Department of Agriculture Regional Offices and the Local Government Units. This training program for short-term, high value crops is an intensive dual-tech hands-on training on commercial production technology for different vegetables and shortterm fruits such as melon, watermelon, cucumber, eggplant, squash, ampalaya, sweet corn and papaya. The programs aim is to empower our farmers with practical knowledge to improve their farm practice and increase yield, thereby providing better income opportunities to support their families. Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program is a joint undertaking of both private and government agencies. This collaborative effort is initiated by the SM Foundation under the supervision of Harbest Agribusiness Corporation which conducts the necessary training while the Local Government Units coordinate their farmers to the Department of Agriculture and provide other incentives and allowances to the participant-farmers such as food and transportation. The on-going project is taking shape in the lands of the Municipality of Consolacion specifically at a 5,000 square meter agricultural land in Barangay Danglag as the farm demo site. There are 125 farmers trainees from the different barangays as well as municipal agriculturists organized to join and assist in the training program. The training program started last September 11 and will end on November 11, 2011. It consists of lectures and hands-on farming techniques and practices such as land preparation, plot/bed making and plastic mulch installation. So far in their sixth week, the farmers had already achieved seed beds treated with complete fertilizer (organic and inorganic), covered with plastic mulch and already planted vegetables like ampalaya, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumber and squash. After the training program the farmers are expected to apply what they have learned from the training to their own small lands with their own resources. The project has graduated more than 2,000 farmers throughout the Philippines in the past two and a half years with 18 project sites. The graduates are very grateful for the technologies that helped them produce more and better vegetables with very little capital. It has given them renewed confidence in pursuing their family as a reliable source of income.

Internship Experience

First week (September 15, 2011):

We were told to report first to the Municipal Agricultures Office and we will go together with the staffs to the farm demo site. This was the first time we got to meet the farmers and we were tasked to observe first. They had arrived at the site 2 hours ahead of us. They were already gathered and even others were already piqued. But they were then immediately oriented about what to do which was to plot and lay-out the land first before making the plant beds. Everyone then gathered their tools and started working. On the other hand, we helped on the preparation of the place for the lecture. It was a very small place and quite far from the site since it was the only available area with access to electricity. The tent was put up along with the tarpaulin for the projector. We were then tasked to go back to the site to check the attendance of the participants. It was challenging because we were not expecting the heat of the sun to be that painful so we didnt bother to bring long sleeves. We have also to deal with the demands of the farmers to call them first while others raised suggestions to do the checking better. We explained why we did it the way that we did and soon enough they understood. A number of farmers cant write so others had to sign for them. Others kept on apologizing about how bad their penmanship were, a Nanay also apologized for her being so slow in writing her name which were all unnecessary. We assured them that it was really okay and we had no problem with it.

During the afternoon lecture, the farmers were gathered again and despite the lack of chairs they managed to huddle together by squatting on the floor while others preferred standing. There was no microphone for the speaker to use so everybody tried to be very quiet and listened very intently. They showed their interests further by jotting down notes and raising questions. After the 2-hour lecture all of us went back to the farm site, men and women alike were very adamant in finishing their plant beds. We have learned that Land Preparation takes the longest time in farming and to ensure good harvest, farming procedures should be followed. In farming, wearing the proper attire which is a combination of long-sleeves, hat and pants is a must or else youll get your skin burned. Second Week (Sept. 22, 2011): Because of the heavy rains the past days the farm demo sites soil was too soft for farming so the Harbest Agriculture trainer decided to allot the whole day for lecture. The lecture took place at the Municipal Agricultures nursery at Barangay Laray, Consolacion, Cebu City.In the nursery you will find plant seedlings, vegetable gardens and a 4

greenhouse where the vegetable seedlings are kept. We helped in preparing the venue, the place was too small for 125 farmers so we managed to get as much chairs inside the room as possible. During the lecture we toured the whole nursery together with Maam Jeanna, one of the agriculturists and took photos of the seedlings that will be planted later on the seed beds. Aside from the tasks given to us by the MAO officers, we also took the opportunity to interview our farmers about their farming lives and the importance of the program to them which will be later featured on the iluvfarmers blogsite. We interviewed three farmers namely: Vicente Lacion, Conchita Andrade and the youngest of all the farmers, 16 year old Dandy Ponce. All their stories were posted at iluvfarmers.blogspot.com.

Third week (Sept. 30, 2011):

Since last weeks session was allotted for lecture, the third weeks allotted for whole day farming. Aside from checking the attendance of the farmers we also helped on the land preparation. A large portion of the land was already ploughed and plotted with seed beds so the groups of farmers worked on treating the beds of complete fertilizer. Others, including us were still preparing the other unprepared portions of land and the ones which were also destroyed by the heavy rains. The complete fertilizer is a mixture of a specified amount of organic fertilizer and an inorganic fertilizer (urea). They are measured by kilo. The treated plot/seed beds were then sprinkled with water and were then covered with plastic mulch before planting. Mulching is a technique which has been used by vegetable growers for many years. Plastic mulch has a number of benefits, 1. It can be used effectively to modify soil temperature. Black mulch applied to the planting bed prior to planting will warm the soil and promote faster growth in early season, which generally leads to early harvest. 2. It prevents soil water loss during dry years and sheds excessive water away from crop root zone. 3. Black plastic mulch prevents light from reaching the soil surface, which in turn prevents the weeds from growing. 4. It reduces fertilizer leaching. 5. It prevents cultivation equipment from injuring crop roots. 6. It improves plant growth. The plastic mulch was then secured on the edges to prevent it from flying off. After which, the mulch was holed through a creatively improvised tin can with embers inside it to prevent the plastic from further tearing. Planting of the seedlings then followed. It was a day of hard work indeed and to see everything taking shape right in front of our eyes was remarkable, something we were privileged to have experienced. We also got to interview a veteran farmer Florentino Cosido. We have learned that growing vegetables for commercial use requires a vigilant work. It is important to take note of the factors during the process. We also learned that too much fertilizer can damage the soil and kill the vegetables and crops. There was also a tip we heard from one of the veteran farmers, he said that water may not be sprinkled to the treated soil because once its covered with mulch, it will 5

moisturize itself.

Fourth week (October 7, 2011): Before going to the farm, we presented to the MAO staffs the screenshots of the social networking sites that we are maintaining to promote the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program with its campaign name iluvfarmers including photos, farmers stories and supports. They were exuberant about it. The idea of the photos of the farmers and stories posted online delighted them more. They had also joined in the iluvfarmers fever and were so excited to tell the farmers about it. The questionnaire that we were also tasked to make was also presented.

It was a session of fun and excitement. The farmers were already used to our presence as we to them. We could say that we were like a big family; we also ate our lunches together. Still, we were tasked to check their attendances and distribute their lunches. We were also tasked to take charge while the staffs were away to practice for their presentation for the upcoming Fiesta. The farmers chatted and joked around while working. There was also an uproar when the Miss Consolacion candidates visited the site.To add, we also got to interview another farmer, Demeterio Tubod and was amazed by his touching life story of getting up after falling. We ended the day with a pictorial with the whole MAO staffs spearheaded by Mrs. Evangeline Puao and with the participation of the Harbest Trainer Mr. Leonard Mirador. We learned how to appreciate life at its simplest that day. It was also our chance to have our team picture taken with the project site as a YMA Graduation requirement. But we also had the photo opportunity with the beneficiaries and the agriculturists too.

5th Week (October 14, 2011) The farm was already full of vegetables, and it was almost done. The farmers were working double time in installing the trellis for the vines. As expected, we were still assigned to check the attendance and distribute the farmers lunches. There were 4 plots still left without plastic mulch so we helped out on the securing of the mulches. It was very windy, so the plastic mulch has to be really secured. There was also a problem with manpower, since a lot has been absent.

One of the good things was vegetables were growing; others already had their flowers opening up. It was a sight to see. Plastic mulches covering the rows looked like flowing water. We also had the time to chat with the farmers while working. We discovered how caring the farmers really are for most of them told us that they wouldnt use pesticides because it can harm us. Sadly though, we were called to go home early because the MAO staffs were to prepare the venue for the Agrifair on the morrow.

We learned to value simple farming tasks like securing the mulches could greatly affect to make a perfect place for the vegetables to live. Every process in planting should be taken seriously; we salute the farmers for doing a very good job.

Social Marketing Initiative

The direct beneficiaries of the social marketing efforts are the trainees of the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan project in Consolacion but the indirect beneficiaries who will be benefiting from the social awareness are all farmers as a whole. Moreover, the target audience of the campaign are the Filipino youth. With these assumptions in place, we designed an elaborate social marketing plan that aims to gather support for the project, raise awareness and glorify the image of farmers and their importance in the society. All this leads to the ultimate goal which is to create a social impact.

Thus our branding is descriptive by nature and we named it iluvfarmers. Our brand attributes are straightforward and empathetic. To gain public trust we have sought the endorsement from prominent and ordinary Cebuano youth who express their support for the campaign. The end result was that around 18 reputable personalities appeared in a series of ad campaigns that we were posted online. Most of them are student leaders in the provinces leading universities such as University of San Carlos, Cebu Normal University and University of Cebu.

With the Php 10,000 parameter set by RAFI, we tried to raise the raise money through solicitation. We sent out solicitation letters to our family who should be the first ones to be convinced first, asked money as we did social marketing in AMA, talked to our friends and we are currently planning a fund raising activity through the help of the crowdsourcing team in Cebu, One Juan made up of YMA Alumni, Vernon Go, Camille Garcia, and Vernie Navaja. The meet up is going to be held at the SM City Cebu on October 23-25, 2011.

In order to gain supporters for the iluvfarmers Facebook page (http://facebook.com/ iluvfarmers), we chatted on and offline, plugged the URL all our internet profiles and on the Pledge of Commitment forms which were distributed to different schools, we posted Facebook status and Twitter status updates that promoted the page, we even went to spamming our Facebook networks and groups. We also approached the help of top Cebuano bloggers to post the press release of the campaign on their blog sites.

The social marketing experience of Jaysee Pingkian was even posted on the official site of the Cebu Bloggers Society Inc. website. The compelling internship experience of the YMA scholars of Team CPMPC was chronicled in their respective blogs as well. The Official Press Release of the campaign was posted in 19 websites online through the support of different bloggers. Links to the posts featuring the iluvfarmers campaign are documented in the Annex.

Reaching 10,000 signatures is a herculean task that is why we approached our different point persons in different schools to collect the signatures from their classmates and schoolmates and so far we have gained the support from colleges and universities including the YMA Season 5 scholars. One of our teammate, Babykit was also able to harness the connections she had with their student organizations in UC Banilad and Lapu-lapu in different departments where most of the signatures we collected came from.

Part of every campaign is to gain sympathy for farmers, so what we did was launch an ad campaign featuring a farmer, posted straightforward Facebook status and Twitter status updates, sent out consistent branding messages, and featured real farmer life stories which are being published on the official blog site of the iluvfarmers campaign (http:// iluvfarmers.blogspot.com).

We didnt just want to comply with the requirements being put up by YMA, we want to create genuine social impact that is why we also aimed for quality interaction from supporters online. We made sure that the supporters comment on posts, actually like the posts, retweet the status updates we sent, post the link to the page on their Facebook profiles and converse with us. We did extensive monitoring on our online marketing statistics with the use of interaction analytic tools of the social networks we are using which are detailed on the Annex. We also praised great comments and thanked those messages of support and even featured some of them in ad campaigns as well.

Lessons Learned and Continued Commitment

The value of time, to never put off until tomorrow what can be done for today, is what I learned from the farmers when I first worked with them. The farmers are one of the most hardworking and dedicated groups of people Ive met in my life and the most important for they grow what we basically eat. They are our heroes. But it is sad to note that only a few values them, a few number of our youths of today have interests on agriculture. Furthermore, I have also learned that our farmers are not very much aware of how great their impact is to the community and thus they need to be empowered, to let them know that we are thankful and we acknowledge their efforts. The interest of these farmers to learn new ways of farming regardless of their age now is remarkable. It reminded me to never stop learning because learning in itself is endless. In my social marketing experience, I have learned that it is not easy to do a campaign for a cause whether through print or social media, the challenge of how many people completely understood what they are supporting stands still. It is important to think about strategies to engage these people to understand more, make them hungry and curious for information, to inspire them and most importantly to establish trust. I commit to honor our farmers forever and to always promote them especially to our children of today. I commit to be there at the farm site every once in a while to interview more farmers and write about their touching stories of hard work. I also want to help teach our MAO officers on how to manage the social networking sites until they master it. - Lorbe Catadman -

I learned that in life we should not only work hard because they have been farming beyond their bodys limits but they are still poor. For poverty to be effectively alleviated, they need to work smart and the modern ways of farming they learned through the program will empower them to have abundant and quality harvests. I learned to appreciate what I have to the point that I think about the farmers who grow them every time I eat. It made me love life in such a way that I dont have to be under the sun, rain or shine, to earn because we have heroes who do it for us, so we dont have to. In the social marketing aspect, I have learned to harness the power of relationships, both personal and professional to advance the campaign and how to effectively monitor different parameters of social interaction online. I commit to continue promoting and maintaining the social media accounts every once in a while even after the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program and the YMA program commences. - Jaysee John Pingkian -

The internship track experience was one of the most unforgettable I ever had and it will make me sad when it ends. Being a volunteer and doing the field work expanded my way of thinking. The experience made me more open-minded. I got nearer to the farmers. Its amazing to be a farmer and to think about the fact that you are the one who grew the crops that almost everybodys eating. As an intern, I was not only taught how to plow and plant but it also taught me to be aware of the important processes a farmer has to comply to grow something. I applied the growing process to my own life and I would like to be a blessing to everyone like that of a vegetable.

I commit to still support the program and promote the program and if my help is still needed then I will as long as I can. -John Rhecel Solon12

I learned the procedures on planting, how to cultivate the land and grow vegetables and hopefully soon harvesting. I so much realized how farmer's really work hard for long hours, often sunrise to sunset. Social Marketing is not an easy task because people will keep on asking you even if you already explained the program to them. I learned to be more patient. I commit to give time and support even if we already have graduated. WE will finish the climb, until the program ends. - Irish Nuez -

What I learned about the internship track is that I come to know the real significance of farmers in and to other people's lives; on how dependent we are towards them. Before the internship, I was barely aware of their importance and disregarded them as poor people. But after getting involved with them for more than a month, and convincing people to support them in order to provide their needs, I was beginning to love the farmers. What I learned about the social marketing is that five out of my ten friends in Facebook are exceptionally kindhearted whether friends for real or friends only in the social networking site. I was touched on how they loved the project and how they're so into it. They automatically shared the page and encouraged their friends to like. I had even made some new friends because of social marketing, internationally and locally. Even after the internship, I commit myself to continually share and promote the program to other people and let them know what they need to know about working with farmers. Babykit Marie Nuez -
