TheAccommodationSpaceEquation
Overlongtimescales(105108years),sedimentaccumulationisstronglycontrolledbychangesin eustaticsealevel,tectonicsubsidencerates,andclimaticeffectsontheproductionofsediment.Several ofthesefactorsarelinkedtooneanotherthroughtheaccommodationspaceequation.Thisbalanceof termsismosteasilyexplainedformarinesediments,butcanbemodifiedeasilytoincludeterrestrial sedimentation.Anumberofprocessescancausethesurfaceoftheoceanstomoveupordownrelative tothecenteroftheearth.Thisdistancefromtheseasurfacetothecenteroftheearthiseustaticsea level.Inaddition,thelithospherecanalsomoveupordownrelativetothecenteroftheearth.Changes inthedistancefromsomearbitrarilychosenreferencehorizonandthecenteroftheeartharecalled upliftorsubsidence.Thedistancebetweenthisreferencehorizonandtheseasurfaceiscalledrelative sealeveloraccommodationspace.
