El expresionismo fue un movimiento cultural surgido en Alemania a principios del siglo XX, que tuvo plasmacin en un gran nmero

de campos: artes plsticas, literatura, msica, cine, teatro, danza, fotografa, etc. Su primera manifestacin fue en el terreno de la pintura, coincidiendo en el tiempo con la aparicin del fovismo francs, hecho que convirti a ambos movimientos artsticos en los primeros exponentes de las llamadas vanguardias histricas. Ms que un estilo con caractersticas propias comunes fue un movimiento heterogneo, una actitud y una forma de entender el arte que aglutin a diversos artistas de tendencias muy diversas y diferente formacin y nivel intelectual. El expresionismo suele ser entendido como la deformacin de la realidad para expresar de forma ms subjetiva la naturaleza y el ser humano, dando primaca a la expresin de los sentimientos ms que a la descripcin objetiva de la realidad.
