All the Ph.D. programmes under Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall be for ON CAMPUS students only. The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth does not permit Ph.D. through distance learning mode.

DEFINITION:
1. A FULL TIME candidate is one who is not employed in any capacity and is fully devoted to the Ph.D. Research work. However, He/She may be assigned maximum Four hours per week teaching work as an when required. 2. OTHER THAN FULL TIME candidates are those who are employed on campus and hence are devoting part of their time to Ph.D. research work. 3. A Teacher means a person engaged in full time teaching work in Sumandeep Vidyapeeth. 4. RAC means Research Advisory committee.

1. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION: 1.1 FACULTY OF DENTAL SCIENCES 1.1.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATEA candidate who presents himself/herself for the registration of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Faculty of Dental Sciences, shall posses a bachelor degree of Dental science and shall also posses any one of the following educational qualifications awarded by this University or by any other recognized Indian University or of any other foreign university as equivalent thereto with atleast 50% of aggregate marks obtained in the Post graduate examination: Degree of Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S.) Diplomate in National Boards of India(DNB) Degree of Master of Science in Dental Materials, Oral Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Forensic Science, Clinical Research, Embryology.

Master Degree in Dental Science from Foreign University. This degree shall be approved by Govt. of India &/or Dental Council of India. 1.1.2 INDEPENDENT RESEARCH CANDIDATE An MDS Professor who is working in any Dental department of this University: with not less than THREE years of teaching experience after the appointment of professor with atleast THREE years of teaching experience at the postgraduate level and Shall have atleast THREE published scientific article in last Four years as a First author in any indexed journal and Shall have atleast TWO completed research projects as Principal investigator, shall be eligible to register for the Ph.D. Degree program in any Dental Subject / department Candidate. without However, a Guide such as an Independent Research candidate

shall have to seek the guidance/assistance from RAC.

1.1.3 OTHER THAN FULL TIME CANDIDATE 1.1.3.1 A candidate who fulfils the regulations as to qualifications specified in regulation 1.1.1 and is working since TWO years as Full time teacher at any post / designation in any Dental department of the constituent college of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall be permitted to register himself/herself as a Other than full time Candidate for Ph.D. program in any Dental Subject / department under the GUIDE of the concerned subject recognized by this University. 1.1.3.2 This Candidate shall submit an under taking stating that he/she will serve the Institute during PhD program. On leaving the job

shall lead to cancellation of the PhD registration. 1.1.3.3 The Candidate registered for Ph.D. in a subject other than the department in which he or she is employed, shall be required to work under his/her PhD Guide directly at least for TEN hours per week for research work. 1.1.3.4 This candidate shall also be required to give an undertaking that he/she shall continue to work as an employee of the university for at least TWO years after the award of degree of Ph.D.

1.2. FACULTY OF ALLIED SCIENCES


[PHARMACY, NURSING, PHYSIO-THERAPY AND MANAGEMENT]

1.2.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATESA candidate who presents himself/herself for registration for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Management shall possess any one of the following educational qualifications in respective discipline with minimum 50% marks awarded by this University or any other recognized University or any other qualification recognized by this University as equivalent thereto: Master's Degree in / Pharmacy/Nursing/Physiotherapy/Management

1.2.2 INDEPENDENT RESEARCH CANDIDATE Professor or Associate Professor who is working in any department of this University with not less than SIX years of teaching experience, of which at least THREE years shall be at the postgraduate level, and having a minimum of TWO research publications as first author in any indexed journal, shall be eligible to register for the Ph.D. Degree without a Guide as Independent Research Candidate. However, such

candidate shall have to seek the guidance/assistance from the RAC. 1.2.3 OTHER THAN FULL TIME CANDIDATE: 1.2.3.1 A candidate who fulfils the regulations as to qualifications specified in regulations 1.2.1, and possesses at least one year continuous experience as a teacher or researcher in a Department/Constituent college of this University on the date of provisional registration, may be permitted to register himself/herself as a other than full time scholar for Ph.D. Degree under a Guide recognized by this University.

1.2.3.2 This Candidate shall submit an under taking stating that he/she will serve the Institute during PhD program. On leaving the job shall lead to cancellation of the PhD registration.

1.2.3.3 This candidate shall also be required to give an undertaking that he/she shall continue to work as an employee of the university for at least TWO years after the award of degree of Ph.D.

1.3. FACULTY OF MEDICINE(ONLY FOR NON-MEDICAL CANDIDATE IN MEDICAL SUBJECTS)

1.3.1 FULL TIME CANDIDATE: A candidate who presents himself/herself for the registration of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Faculty of Medicine, shall possess the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc) of duration 3 years in thesubjectofAnatomy/Physiology/Biochemistry/Pharmacology/

Microbiology,obtained from a Medical college recognized by Medical Council of India.

1.3.2 INDEPENDENT RESEARCH CANDIDATE: A Teacher possessing the qualification of Ph.D. in the subject of Anatomy/ Physiology/Biochemistry/Pharmacology/Microbiology and

working as full time employee of the university shall be eligible to register for another Ph. D in the same subject, without a guide as Independent Research Candidate.

1.3.3 OTHER THAN FULL TIME CANDIDATE: 1.3.3.1 A candidate fulfilling the criteria laid down in clause 1.3.1 and possesses at least one year experience as full time teacher in the department of Anatomy / Physiology / Biochemistry / Pharmacology/Microbiology shall be eligible to register himself/herself as a other than full time candidate for Ph.D. Degree under a Guide recognized by this University. 1.3.3.2. Other than full time Candidate shall submit an under taking stating that he/she will serve the Institute during PhD program. On leaving the institution during the Ph. D program shall automatically lead to cancellation of the PhD registration. 1.3.3.3 This candidate shall also be required to give an undertaking that he/she shall continue to work as an employee of the university for at least ONE year after the award of degree of Ph.D.

2. DURATION OF RESEARCH WORK:


2.1. FULL TIME CANDIDATE 2.1.1. The candidate registered for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) as a Full Time Research Candidate having Masters degree

/ DNB in the concerned subject, shall undergo research work for a minimum period of TWO years from the date of provisional registration. 2.1.2. However, the candidate registered for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) as a Full Time Research Candidate having Masters degree in Science (M.Sc.) shall undergo research work for a minimum period of THREE years from the date of provisional registration. 2.1.3. The Full Time candidate shall attend the department for research . on all working days, except for period when he/she is allowed to visit other institutions/laboratories for activities connected with research for a period permitted by the concerned Guide and Head of the Department.

2.2. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH CANDIDATE2.2.1. The candidate registered for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in any department as Independent Research Candidate shall have to undergo research work for a minimum period of TWO years from the date of provisional registration. 2.2.2 The Independent Research Candidate shall carry out the research related work in his own department on all the working days, except for period when he/she is allowed to visit other

institutions/laboratories for activities connected with research.

2.3. OTHER THAN FULL TIME CANDIDATE2.3.1 The candidate registered for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in any department as an other than full time Research candidate having Masters degree /DNB qualification in the

concerned subject shall undergo research work for a minimum period of THREE years from the date of provisional registration. 2.3.2. However, the candidate other than full time candidate having Master of science in non-medical subjects, shall undergo the research work and training for a minimum period of THREE years from the date of provisional registration.

3. MAXIMUM DURATION The maximum period of Research shall not exceed more than Double the duration of stipulated research period for respective Ph.D. programs. Further extension shall be granted subject to the approval by the Vice-Chancellor.

4. PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION:


4.1. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A Candidate who has passed entrance examination conducted by Sumandeep Vidyapeeth at National level or who has qualified UGC/ CSIR (JRF) Examinations / SLET /GATE /Teacher fellowship holder/ M.Phil shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. Program of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth.

4.2 ENTRANCE EXAMINATION: 4.2.1 The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth shall be conducting an All-India based Entrance examination for the admission to Ph.D. program after due advertisement / Notification. 4.2.2 Passing in the Entrance examination is the pre-requisite for those who are seeking admission to the Ph.D. program on the strength of Entrance examination. 4.2.3 The Pattern of the Entrance examination shall be as under: 4.2.3.1. An objective type question paper of Two hours duration,

having Two sections, each of 50 marks.

4.2.3.2. The questions in section one will be related to Research Methodology and Bio-Statistics. The questions in section two will be related to the faculty/ subject concerned. 4.2.3.3. A minimum of total 50% marks in both the sections taken together shall be required to become eligible for provisional admission. 4.2.4 The Independent research candidate shall be exempted from the entrance Examination

5. ALLOCATION OF RESEARCH GUIDE / SUPERVISOR : 5.1.The admitted candidates shall be allocated to the university recognized Research Guides/ Supervisors formally in the Departmental committee meeting comprising of Head of the dept. and available recognized research guides, if any. 5.2 Candidates shall be allocated to the Guides depending on the ratio of number of students per Research Guide and the research interest of the students as indicated during interview. In any case, the allotment/ allocation of supervisor shall not be left to the individual student or teacher. 5.3. The Head of the department shall send the list of allotted Guides for the respective candidates, before the provisional admission to RAC and Controller of Examination.

6. PROVISIONAL ADMISSION: A candidate shall be provisionally admitted to the University for Ph.D. program by submitting a duly filled Prescribed Form along with necessary documents as under: Copy of Post graduate degree Certificate. Marksheet of Entrance Examination

Copy of the Fellowship award certificate (if any) Sponsorship certificate, (if any) Copy of Recent Publications ( of last four years), (if any) Service certificate (if applicable) Six Printed copies of Synopsis of the Research Proposal in a prescribed format along with a soft copy. Two passport size recent photographs

7. COURSE WORK:
7.1. The registered candidate for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) shall undertake course work for a minimum period of six months. The course work shall be treated as pre Ph.D preparation, and shall include a course on research methodology and computer applications. 7.2. The Sumandeep Vidyapeeth, through the respective department, shall conduct an objective and / or subjective type of examination at the end of six months. 7.3. The minimum marks required for passing the examination shall be 50%. It is the pre requisite for the candidate to proceed further with the writing of the thesis. 7.4. In case a candidate fails to pass the examination in Five attempts, his/her registration shall be cancelled. Payment of fees for writing the examination at the end of first year and inability to write this examination shall be deemed as an attempt. 7.5 The Independent Research Candidate shall be Exempted from the course work examination.

8. INTER-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH:
8.1. A candidate registered for a Ph.D programme shall carry out research work essentially under guidance of his/her Ph.D. guide. 8.2. A candidate can pursue inter-disciplinary research work in other concerned department/institute recognized by the university. However, the

work at the said department/institute shall be carried out under the guidance of qualified and competent expert/s who shall act as co-guide/s for the candidate. 8.3. The co-guide/s may work as co-opted member/s of the RAC for the candidate.

9. CHANGE OF GUIDES AND TRANSFER OF SCHOLARS


9.1 In case of departure, retirement, or death of a PhD guide, the candidates registered under him/her shall be re-allocated to other recognized guide/s in the subject by the RAC with the permission of Vice-chancellor.

9.2 When a guide is not available for period of six months or more due to leave/lien/deputation, RAC shall allocate a student to other eligible guide in absence of a co-guide, till the guide becomes available.

10. PROGRESS OF THE RESEARCH WORK:


10.1 A candidate shall submit progress report of his/her research work every six months in the prescribed format to the RAC.

10.2 The RAC shall review the progress of research and shall advice the candidate with regard to further work. The RAC shall also submit its repor to the controller of the examination.

10.3 The candidate shall be required to make a presentation of his/her research work done before the RAC every year for the purpose of evaluation and further guidance.The RAC shall send the report of the same to the controller of the examination.

10.4 If a candidate fails to submit two consecutive six monthly progress

report or/and fails to appear before RAC for presenting progress of research work on one occasion without valid reason/s communicated in advance to the RAC, the RAC shall recommend to the controller of the examination for cancelling his/her registration.

10.5 In case of unsatisfactory research work by the candidate, the Research Advisory Committee shall record the reason/s for the same, advice and suggest correctives measures. If the candidate fails to incorporate these corrective measures, the Research Advisory Committee may recommend to the Vice-Chancellor with substantial reasons through the Controller of Examinations for cancellation of the registration.

11. CANCELLATION OF THE Ph.D. REGISTRATION:


11.1 In case of recommendation for cancellation of the registration by the RAC, the candidate shall be intimated by the controller of examination about the grounds on which the registration is being proposed for cancellation. In case of any representation from the candidate, the Controller of Examinations shall refer the matter to the Vice-chancellor, who may either suggest cancellation of registration or refer the matter back to the respective RAC for reconciliation or necessary action as it may deem fit. The decision of the Vice-chancellor shall be final.

11.2 A candidate who fails to submit the completed thesis within the prescribed period or has also fails to do so within the notified extended period, if any, the registration of such candidate shall stand lapsed

automatically and such candidate shall be discharged from the Ph.D programme. However, such a candidate may, if he/she desires so, apply for re-registration for the Ph.D. degree after once again complying with the procedure prescribed under these regulations.

12. CHANGE OF TOPIC OF RESEARCH:


12.1 If a candidate desires to change the topic of research on substantial grounds, he/she shall make an application to RAC through the guide within one year from the date of provisional registration. 12.2 The RAC shall consider such application on merit and may recommend change of the topic of research to the controller of examination. 12.3 Permission for change in the topic of research may be granted by the Vice-Chancellor. No further change shall be permitted thereafter. 12.4 The candidate shall be required to comply with all the procedure for registration of the new topic. 12.5 However, the duration of research period shall commence from the date of registration of new topic.

13. TITLE OF THE THESIS:


13.1 The exact title of the Thesis shall be intimated to the RAC at the time of submission of the research proposal. 13.2 Any request made for change of Title of the Thesis after the submission of the research proposal but within period of three months of provisional registration shall be placed before the Research Advisory committee for its consideration. 13.3 The Change in the Title of the Thesis shall be allowed only once and on recommendation by the Research Advisory Committee. The RAC shall intimate the change in the title, if any , to the candidate and the Controller of Examination.

14. SYNOPSIS:
14.1 After completion of research work the candidate shall be required to submit the entire research work to his/her guide for approval. 14.2 After approval of the research work by the guide, the candidate shall submit SEVEN copies of synopsis to the RAC for its approval.

14.3 The candidate shall make a Digital audio-visual presentation of his/her research work before the members of Research Advisory Committee. The said synopsis shall be modified suitably, if needed, based on the suggestions of the Committee. This step shall be considered as preliminary examination prior to the submission of Doctoral thesis. 14.4 The candidate shall now submit FIVE copies of the final approved version of synopsis to the controller of examination through RAC. Copies of the synopsis certified by the controller of examination shall be sent back to the RAC, Head of the department, the guide and the candidate.

15. SUBMISSION OF THESIS:


15.1 After the acceptance of synopsis by the university, the candidate shall submit SIX copies of thesis, duly signed by the guide, coguide(s) if any, and head of the department along with TWO copies in computer disc within three months from the final approved version of the synopsis to the controller of examination through the RAC in confidential cover.

15.2 It shall be mandatory for the candidate to publish at least ONE Research papers from the research work done for this thesis in Indexed journal(s) before submission of Thesis.

15.3 The title page of the thesis, cover, format, etc., shall strictly conform to the format of presentation prescribed by the university and shall carry a declaration by the candidate and certificate duly signed and issued by the Guide, Co-guide(s) if any, Head of the Department and Faculty Dean.

15.4 Supplementary papers to the Thesis like printed copies of any contribution to the knowledge of the subject may also be appended

to the

thesis by the Research scholar.

15.5 The Thesis shall ordinarily be submitted not later than five years from the date of provisional registration in the case of Full time and other than full time scholars.

15.6 Where a research scholar has submitted the synopsis but is unable to submit the thesis within the time prescribed, extension of time for submission of thesis may be granted by the Vice-Chancellor subject to maximum of two more years for valid reasons, on payment of penalty fees as may be prescribed.

16. FEE STRUCTURE FOR Ph.D. CANDIDATES


16.1 Application fee, Tuition fee, Registration fee, Library fee, Examination fee etc. shall be payable by the candidate as prescribed by the University from time to time. 16.2 The security deposit shall be refunded only after successful completion of PhD programme. 16.3 In case the candidate discontinues the PhD programme irrespective of duration of joining, the security deposit shall be forfeited.

17. PUBLICATION OF THE THESIS


A thesis only on approval, shall be published in full as a book with the permission of the RAC . However, a candidate can during the course of his/her research, publish papers in indexed research journals as advised by his/her guide. In such instances, the candidate shall append reprint copies of published research papers in the copies of Ph.D. thesis submitted to the University by him/her.
