OCTOBER 23, 2011 THIRTIETH SU DAY I ORDI ARY TIME

A high school classmate of mine decided after college that he wanted to become a lawyer. He loves the law. For him, it offers the best of both worlds. It is, first of all, an exacting science with great precision and specificity. That aspect of the law appeals to his orderly nature, his desire to categorize things and keep them in little boxes. But secondly, what my classmate also appreciates about the law is that it is open to interpretation. It has a breadth and depth that allow for variation in individual circumstances. This aspect appeals to my friend's more free-spirit nature, a characteristic of his life that left many of us wondering years ago how he would ever succeed in his chosen profession. As they are presented in the Gospel of Matthew, the Pharisees certainly are the ones who can execute the specificity of the law. They are criticized for their intense scrutiny of the minutiae of life, designating whether something is permitted or forbidden. Jesus was not going to allow himself to be trapped in that mechanical application of law. Not that the law is bad. Indeed, for the pious Jew of Jesus' day, the law was the path to life. But the Pharisees were looking for an argument, and Jesus was not going to enter into one. His response might give some guidance today for discussions with those who get incensed about displaying the Ten Commandments. When Jesus was asked about the law he does not reference the Decalogue. Instead, he cites the Shema, the prayer of a pious Jew in Deuteronomy 6: "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." And for good measure he adds a quote from Leviticus 19: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." My classmate would be happy. Law with specificity-love God and neighbor-but with enough flexibility to accommodate a variety of circumstances.

EW PRAYERS, SAME MASS Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent in 2011, Catholics around the US will worship using the new English translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The most noticeable changes are in the Order of Mass and the priests prayers. And also with you becomes And with your spirit. We believe becomes I believe, and one in being becomes consubstantial. Though some words are new, the Mass itself is not changing. As the US bishops remind us, this is an opportunity for liturgical and spiritual renewal. Learning to pray with new words, we enter into the mystery of the Eucharist with greater awareness and appreciation EW MUSIC, SAME MASS"
Do you like to sing in the shower? If so, St. Mary Music Ministry is looking for you! Whether you are a solo singer, a back-up singer, or just enjoy singing in an informal group, your help at any Mass any time will be appreciated! You do not need to read music, or to commit to singing every week; brief rehearsals are held weekly right before each Mass, and right after Mass for the following week's music; just meet in the Choir Loft! There will also be general rehearsals once a month on Saturdays from 11:30 - 1:00. Please consider volunteering your time as available to this important ministry, and especially as we transition to the new and challenging Roman Missal 3 liturgical music settings - ALL are welcome!
