Often times those addicted are surrounded by family, which is a good thing. However, this can also cause the individual to feel guilty, ashamed, and even embarrassed because of their drug use. The holidays can bring on a large amount of stress. This coupled with the parties and gettogethers that serve alcohol could spell disaster. It is important for those who have recently stopped using drugs to focus on the positive, and stay away from situations which are stressful. These stressors could cause one to use drugs or alcohol again. This is an important time to focus on those things one has learned in treatment to stay clean and sober. The holidays can be a joyous time that is cherished with friends and family. Keep on a positive path and have a happy, healthy, holiday season. If you or a loved one is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction call Narconon Arrowhead at 800-468-6933 or visit us www.stopaddiction.com. fb STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver The English language is unique in the number of collective nouns it possesses. For instance, a group of frogs is known as an army and a group of crows is called a murder. We have a shrewdness of apes, a wisdom of wombats, a congregation of crocodiles, a smack of jellyfish, a wiggle of worms, a crash of rhinoceroses, a waddle of penguins and a scourge of mosquitoes, to name a few. Geese flock together in gaggles, unless theyre in flight, in which case they are collectively known as a skein.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver If someone called you a mumpsimus, would you be flattered or insulted? It seems that the appropriate reaction would be to take offense. According to the MerriamWebster dictionary, a mumpsimus is a stubborn person who insists on making an error in spite of being shown that it is wrong.

FIVE REASONS FOR INVESTORS TO BE ENCOURAGED Its easy to become overwhelmed by the constant stream of negative news about the state of our country and the world. This feeling also makes it difficult to be confident as an investor. At times like these, a little perspective might be in order. A good place to start is to remember that smart investing is not dependent on todays headlines, but about building wealth over a long period of time. With that in mind, here are five important reasons you should feel encouraged about your longterm investments: #1 - A stock market with room to grow - The stock market (as measured by the S&P 500 - an unmanaged index of stocks and a benchmark measurement of the broad stock market) has regained much of the ground it lost between 2007 and 2009. In the 12 months ending June 30, 2011, the index generated a total return of more than 30%. Yet halfway through 2011, the index stood 15% below its peak reached nearly four years ago. Historically, the stock market trend has been growth - and there seems to be plenty of room for more of that. But even in light of the current bull market cycle, investors should always expect the stock market to fluctuate along the way. #2 - Companies are profiting even in a modest economic recovery - Though the economy is not exactly growing at a sizzling pace, U.S. companies represented in the S&P 500 Index have the potential to generate record profits in 2011. Many firms have found ways to generate products and services in a more productive and cost-

efficient fashion, which positions them for additional growth during more prosperous periods. #3 - The echo boomers are emerging - An estimated 75 million children of baby boomer parents are now coming of age. They were born between 1979 and 1995 and are already a part of (or will soon be entering) the professional world. As they begin receiving incomes, they will begin buying homes, cars, and other essential (and nonessential) items. They make up the next great consumer class in America. #4 - Capitalism is a worldwide phenomenon - Free markets are more widespread than ever before. Many of us grew up in a time when the U.S. and only a few other countries were capitalist centers. Now it is prevalent in places we wouldnt have dreamed of a generation ago including China, Russia and most of Eastern Europe. This trend is creating a burgeoning global middle class, and real consumers are emerging by the millions in many new markets, some with extremely large populations. This creates huge business opportunities for companies that are well positioned to capitalize on them. Growth is alive and well in many of these newly developing free markets as well as in established markets across the world. #5 - The pessimists have been wrong - Investing in stocks means believing in the potential of businesses for years to come. Although pessimists in the current market call these unprecedented times, the same assumption was incorrectly made at other times throughout history. After a rough decade for stocks in the 1970s, one magazine ran a cover story on the death of equities that was followed by two decades of record returns for stocks. In the midst of the Great Depression, many questioned whether capitalism was still viable, but in the decades to follow America emerged as the worlds strongest economic power. There will always be doomsday pessimists, but while problems exist, our history shows countless examples of companies that uncovered innovative solutions to problems confronting consumers, businesses and society that allowed these firms to thrive. That process leads to new jobs, more economic prosperity and better returns for investors.

As an investor, consider whether the current market challenges are a roadblock that will prevent investment success, or the foundation of new opportunities for future profits. If history is any guide, investors who can afford to ride through short-term market swings will have the potential to realize future profitability. f CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH Corner of Routes 59 & 219 Lewis Run, PA Pastor Randall Sherlin Phone: 814-362-9772 Sunday School............10:00am Morning Worship........11:00am Evening Service............6:30pm Wed. HEART PUBLICATIONS:
(Straight from The Fathers Heart to YOU!)
Part IV: JESUS CRIED FROM THE CROSS: FATHER, FORGIVE THEM! FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO!
This Week, I need to take the flow of LOVE, REPENTANCE, AND FORGIVENESS to a DIFFERENT level: HALLOWEEN. I know many of us for years celebrated this Holiday in the innocence of ghosts, goblins, witches, jack-o-lanterns, trick or treat for candy, etc. thinking it was all fun and games with no real significance of the dark side, so to speak. The LORD led me to do some research on Halloween several years ago. I discovered it to be a demonic holiday with blood sacrifices taking place all over the world - human blood sacrifices. This Holiday is filled with demonic symbolism of evil and death; and we have thought it to be just for fun to dress up and dress our houses and yards with inviting demonic symbols REPRESENTING the dark side. Ignorance CAN harm our family. Id like to give you a testimony of a man who was raised by his father, a Satanist. He shared that when he was young, he and this little girl would be drugged and taken to SATANIC rituals and have various perverted things done to them. This happened repeatedly until they reached their young teenage years at which time this young teenager was to mature into manhood as a satanic priest, following in his fathers footsteps... The young teenage girl was the sacrifice offered that night, HALLOWEEN. This is a VERY TRUE story. HEAVEN IS VERY REAL; SO IS HELL. ANGELS ARE VERY REAL; SO ARE DEMONS. GOD ALLOWED JESUS BLOOD TO BE SHED TO ESTABLISH THE HIGHEST BLOOD COVENANT AND TAKE CARE OF ALL THE SIN THAT IS BEING COMMITTED IN THE EARTH -PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE. HE DID THIS BECAUSE GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD REGARDLESS of the BAD CHOICES OF FALLEN HUMANITY. SATAN SO HATES GOD AND HUMANITY THAT HE IS CALLED THE FATHER OF ALL LIES AND THE MASTER OF DECEPTION. HE DECEIVES PEOPLE TAKING LOVE, JOY, AND PEACE REPLACING IT WITH HATE, RAGE, GREED, LUST, ANXIETY, WHICH ULTIMATELY LEADS TO SELF-DESTRUCTION! WE ARE HERE ON THIS EARTH AND GIVEN A WILL TO CHOOSE WHO WE ARE GOING TO SERVE. WE ARE NEVER OUR OWN MASTER! THINK ABOUT IT!

Choose light-colored costumes made of flame-retardant materials. Avoid oversized shoes, which can make walking difficult, and wigs and billowy costumes, which can easily catch fire and burst into flames. Choose makeup over masks, and if your child must wear a mask, encourage them to take it off between trick-or-treat stops. Use props made of cardboard rather than wood or metal and insist your trick-or-treaters carry a flashlight.. Establish boundaries and a curfew for your trick-or-treaters and enforce them. Accompany younger trick-or-treaters. Encourage your trick-or-treaters to go only to homes that are well lit and accept treats only at the door; they should never go inside a home. Check treats before allowing kids to eat them.

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky Q: I am heartbroken that Fox has canceled Americas Most Wanted. Ive watched the show since the beginning, and I am so proud of all the good John Walsh and his crew have done to get those dirtbags off the streets! Is there an address for Fox that we can write to, hopefully to change their minds? -- Gertrude T., via email A: I have good news for you, Gertrude. Lifetime Television recently announced that it has picked up John Walshs top crimefighting show, which will return for its 25th season later this year. While there is not an exact airdate scheduled as of this writing, keep an eye on this column for updates as I get them. Also, check online at www.celebrityextraonline.com as December gets closer for my exclusive interview with John Walsh about the resurrection of AMW on Lifetime. Im sure well also talk about all those creeps and slimeballs that John will be trying to capture this upcoming season.

Josh Holloway Q: I loved the TV show Lost and have been wondering about the man who played Sawyer. He is such a good actor. Do you have any info on what hes doing now? - Janet R., Newark, Ohio A: The handsome Josh

Holloway, 42, has been keeping pretty busy since Lost ended last year. You can see him again soon on the big screen in Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol. In the movie, which hits theaters on Dec. 21, Josh plays Trevor Hanaway, a member of Ethan Hunts (played by Tom Cruise) Mission Impossible force, along with Ving Rhames and Academy Award-nominee Jeremy Renner. *** Q: I really liked your idea a few months back of having Beth Littleford (of Crazy Stupid Love) playing James Spaders wife in The Office this season, but now I hear Maura Tierney has been tapped for the part. Is that true? If so, what do you think about that? Holly T., via e-mail A: While Maura is no stranger to comedy -- she co-starred on News Radio from 1995-99 -- she usually plays the straight (wo)man, which is exactly what James Spader needs, now that we are getting a better idea of what his character, Robert California, is like. So now I make this modest proposal: How about we cast Beth as Roberts Scranton mistress? Her offbeat and hilarious sense of humor, along with her improv skills and deadpan humor, would make her the perfect secret lover for the new boss, as well as an excellent foil for the rest of the cast. Are you listening, Paul Lieberstein and crew? *** Q: I really like the reality/ survival series, The Colony, on the Discovery Channel. When will the third season start? -- Jane R., Philadelphia A: According to a Discovery Channel representative, currently there are no plans to bring The Colony back in 2011. Ill keep checking and keep you posted as I learn any more details for 2012. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Psychologist and dog expert Stanley Coren pens a loving ode to Flint, his Cairn terrier, in Born to Bark: My Adventures with an Irrepressible and Unforgettable Dog (Free Press). But its also an autobiography of his own journey, with and without pets. Well-written and touching, this is an enjoyable and inspiring read. All My Patients Kick and Bite is veterinarian Jeff Wells second memoir about the joys and pains of caring for farm, domestic and notso-domestic animals. From an escaped dog to an ornery llama, Wells anecdotes are humorous looks at caring for animals in a rural area. Finally, if youre looking for a book that covers the basics of obtaining, training and raising a puppy, look for The Dog Trainers Complete Guide to a Happy Well-Behaved Pet (St. Martins Press). Author Jolanta Bental details everything from choosing a new dog to training and socializing, dealing with common behavior problems and keeping your dog healthy. Anyone considering getting a dog, especially first-time owners, should have a training and care manual close at hand, and Bentals guide fits the bill. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Space Heaters Are Handy, But ... Its that time of year again. As temperatures cool down and Jack Frost makes an appearance, homeowners start looking for efficient ways to heat their homes. Its also when the number of fires caused by improperly used portable electric space heaters begin to climb. Yet we cant abandon space heaters entirely -- they provide decent supplemental heat to individual rooms, and in some parts of the U.S. are the only source of heat during cold snaps. So, careful selection and the observance of safety rules is the best solution to the dilemma of whether or not to use a space heater. If youre using an older model, check it thoroughly for problems -- a frayed cord, damaged heating elements, dented or rusted casing and so on. Damaged space heaters should be replaced as soon as possible. When purchasing a new electric space heater, make sure it has the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label attached to it. Avoid heaters that feature open heating elements (heating elements protected only by a

mesh grille). An estimated 6,000 people a year are treated in hospital emergency rooms for burns caused by contacting the hot surfaces of room heaters. Heaters that circulate warmed liquid or oil through a closed system are a safer option. Although most space heaters rely on convection (the circulation of air) to heat an entire room, some rely on radiant heating: infrared radiation that directly heats up objects and people that are within the heaters line of sight. Radiant heaters are a more efficient choice when youll be in a room for only a few hours, but you must stay within its line of sight. Set up the space heater at least 3 feet away from furniture, drapes, bedding and other combustible materials. Do not place or prop it up on anything; put it flat on the floor, away from foot traffic. Be especially careful to keep children and pets away from the heater, and operate only when adults are in the room. When you go to bed, turn the heater off -stay warm underneath the covers instead. If you use an extension cord with the heater, make sure the cord is marked No. 14 or No. 12 American Wire Gauge (AWG) -- this is printed

on the label attached to the extension cord when purchased. NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson To keep celery fresh for a month or more, wrap your bunch of celery just like you purchased it (not washed) in foil at both ends and all around the celery bunch. When needing celery, unwrap and remove the stalks you need, then rewrap and store in refrigerator. -- R.B. of Florida and Ohio I read your tip on splinters. I would like to suggest another: Put a drop of Elmers glue over the splinter, let it dry and then use tweezers to pull off the hard drop of glue. The splinter usually comes right with it if any of the splinter was exposed. -- P.C. in Alabama I have a tip to keep those nasty flies out of your salads while trying to enjoy the food at a picnic: shower caps! They work well on almost any shape or size of bowl or plate. And they stay on better then stretch wrap. I go to the dollar store and buy 10 shower caps for a buck. And you can wash them in really hot water to reuse. -- A Reader, via email

By Samantha Mazzotta Closing Up for Winter Q: Last year, I placed weather stripping inside my home's window frames and the door. Yet I still feel that the house is drafty, and my heating bills didn't really go down. Is there more that I can do? -Frank L., Burlington, Vt. A: You should do a home energy audit (or home energy assessment) this fall, before winter closes in, to find out if and where heat is escaping from your house. This can be done using a do-ityourself kit -- often available through your utility company at a reduced price -- or by hiring a professional. Professional auditors often use a blower door as their primary tool in hunting down sources of air coming into the house. The blower door is a fan unit that attaches to an exterior door, and includes a unit to measure air pressure inside the house. The door lowers the air pressure inside the house; then, higher outside air pressure means air will enter the house through unsealed openings and cracks. The auditor hunts down these entry points. Ask the auditor if the blower door is calibrated or not. A calibrated blower door can provide additional information on how airtight the home is. Another tool in the professional auditor's arsenal is the thermographic scan. Using this, he or she can determine whether your home needs new insulation and where exactly that insulation needs to go. Proper insulation can go a long way toward reducing energy costs, particularly in older homes. To find a professional auditor, contact your utility company or visit its website. Ask friends and neighbors if they've had an energy audit, and get recommendations from them. Contact several auditors, and ask if they use a calibrated blower door and whether they do thermographic scans. Get a written estimate before allowing any work to be done.

Do you enjoy the detours? I was driving to spend some time with a coaching client. It was a nice day and all was going well as I drove along the recently paved four-lane highway. I had some of my favorite tunes playing, the sunroof open blowing through whats left of my hair, the sun massaging my neck with Vitamin D--It was a good day. I picked up my directions from the seat beside me and glanced at them, and then at my phones clock. Yep, right on time, I thought, took the next exit, turned left and headed off... ...in the wrong direction. I didnt realize it until about 10 minutes further down the road when I was due to arrive at the restaurant...and it wasnt there. So I pulled over, read the directions again, noted that I should have turned right, not left, and headed back up the road. I called my client to let him know Id be late and he was, too. I was aggravated with myself, until I thought, Its going to take the same amount of time to get there whether Im aggravated or not. So I cranked up the tunes, enjoyed the sunshine and a huge dose of positivity all the way there. A public service message brought to you by

Study Pinpoints Gulf War Illness Finally there's a study that matches apples with apples: Baylor University researchers sought to compare the illnesses of veterans with the conditions of their actual deployment. Reported in the Environmental Health Perspectives September 2011 issue, "Complex Factors in the Etiology of Gulf War Illness" takes a look at veterans who served in Gulf War I back in 1990-1991. The report says that one-fourth of Gulf War I veterans have pain, memory problems, gut and breathing problems, mood problems and headaches -illnesses that are grouped together and called Gulf War Illness, or GWI. The types of illnesses depend on the location served, says the research, and subgroups of those locations have been identified. For example, certain illness in veterans who served in Iraq or Kuwait are likely due to the pyridostigmine bromide pills given as a nerve gas antidote. Veterans who weren't necessarily on the front lines were subjected to pesticides, with worse effects if their uniforms were treated with pesticides or they also wore flea collars. Those in Kuwait were exposed to oil-well fires. Everyone got multiple vaccines. Researchers used questionnaires and got down to map level, along the lines of, "Where you were? What was your role? How long where you there?" Participants were asked about each of 19 different experiences, such as, whether they had actual contact with destroyed enemy vehicles or were within 1 mile of a SCUD missile. Bottom line: It depends where you were and what you were doing. If you have a so-far undiagnosed illness, this research can be helpful in establishing a claim with the VA. To find the whole document (not just the Abstract) put the whole title in Google -- "Complex

Keep Pets Safe This Halloween DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Last Halloween, our dog Valiant ran into the room as my kids were tearing into their trick-or-treat candy and ate several wrappers and a couple of pieces of chocolate. We had to rush him to the emergency pet hospital in another town. Fortunately, he only had to stay overnight for observation and he passed the wrappers without incident, but the veterinary assistant said that they see incidents like this every year at Halloween. Please remind your readers not to let their pets near all the goodies being handed out, as they're not

NOW HERES A TIP By JoAnn Derson I feel the following is the best way to remove lint from the trap on my dryer. After completion of the drying cycle, take the used Bounce dryer sheet and swipe the screen. Then throw it into the wastebasket, located next to the dryer. For loads not using Bounce, take a used one from the wastebasket and use it. This puts the Bounce sheet through a complete clothes-drying episode. -- G.B. from Minnesota A great way to keep tennis shoes and other shoes together: When you take them off, tie the shoes together by the shoestrings (loosely) or connect the two shoes with Velcro straps if they close that way. In doing this, it is much faster and easier to find BOTH shoes when ready to go. Keep smiling! -- J.B. in Virginia

S.W.A.M.P. TEEN CENTER The S.W.A.M.P. Teen Center would like to thank everyone who donated goodies for the bake sale on October 8th at the Port Allegany Town Square and to those that came and supported the teen center with their purchases and donations. We would like to extend a special Thanks to the Brookens family. Congratulations Gary and RaChelle! f PA CLEANWAYS COMPLETES ELDRED TOWNSHIP CLEAN UP PA CleanWays of McKean County, an affiliate of Keep PA Beautiful, completed an illegal dump clean up on West Eldred Road in Eldred Township on Saturday, October 15, 2011. Eight volunteers removed abandoned trash, tires, and several white goods from the landscape. Eldred Township Supervisor, Tim Moyer, provided his time and a backhoe for the project. The Casella Landfill provided a roll off and the tipping fees for the project. Other organizations involved included the McKean County Conservation District and Adult Probation, and Penn State Extension. Jim Clark, McKean County Penn State Extension Educator, stated, These volunteers provide a valuable service to the community. People that illegally dump, especially near water sources, put us all at risk because there is no protection for the water. All garbage should be recycled or end up at a landfill.

DOLLARS AND SENSE By David Uffington Child Identity Theft More than 8 million people are victimized by identity theft each year. Just when you thought youd covered all the bases in protecting yourself, thieves have come up with a new target that most families dont think about: children. According to a news release from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, more than half of child identity-theft victims are under the age of 12. A 9-year-old was in debt collection. The largest debt was nearly three-quarters of a million dollars. A 2-year-old was in bankruptcy. And the youngest victim was 5 months old. As usual, it begins with the Social Security number. It will be years before a child applies for credit, or goes to college or needs any government benefits, so the theft might not be noticed. Your child might be a victim of identity theft if you receive bills in your childs name, or tax papers, traffic tickets or lien notices, or if your child cant get a drivers license because the number is already being used. A pre-approved credit-card offer isnt necessarily a red flag unless accompanied by other indications. (Unless you have strong reason to suspect theres been identity theft, dont check your childs credit, as this opens a credit report.) Go to the Identity Theft Resource Center (www.idtheftcenter.org) and put child in the search box. Look for Fact Sheet 120. (Dont miss Fact Sheet 120B -- A Guide for Parents.) According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, here are some ways to keep your child safe from identity theft: -- If you open a bank account with a child, opt out of all marketing lists. -- Object to giving your childs Social Security number when registering for school. It might be optional, or there might be a way to protect the number. Ask hard questions. -- At the doctors office, ask questions about how the information is to be safeguarded. -- When your teen begins to drive, opt for the random number instead of Social Security number for the license. -- When you teen fills out job applications, teach him or her to leave the Social Security number blank. A would-be employer doesnt need that information. If your child is actually hired, only the bookkeeper who fills out W-2 forms at the end of the year needs the information, not a shift supervisor in a burger place. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was American artist and illustrator Florence Scovel Shinn who made the following observation: The game of life is the game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy. The beaver is a rodent. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton

Jimmie Johnson's quest for a sixth straight Cup title took a hit after a wreck at Charlotte Motor Speedway dropped him to eighth in the standings with five races left. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo) The Ebb and Flow of Jimmie Johnson CONCORD, N.C. -- Think the Chase for the Sprint Cup varies week to week? Consider the extreme example of the driver who has won the past five championships.

Jimmie Johnson offers evidence of how the NASCAR title format punishes mistakes more than it rewards successes. Finishes of 10th and 18th in the Chase's first two races left Johnson 29 points behind Tony Stewart, who won them both. Then Johnson finished second at Dover and first at Kansas, pulling to within four points of the lead, now occupied by Carl Edwards. Johnson crashed at Charlotte in the Bank of America 500, resulting in a placing of 34th. As a result, he is now eighth, 35 points behind Edwards. The point system changed this year, and each point has a greater value. Comparing point totals of 2010 with those of the current year, the gap between Edwards and Johnson, 35 points, is the equivalent of about 90 under the previous format. Five races remain. Johnson's bid for a sixth straight title is in jeopardy, but he is far from conceding. "We just have to go racing," he said. "That's all there is to it. There are five races left, and right now all we have are those five races. "Definitely not the night we wanted. This is not going to help us win a sixth championship. I promise you, this team and myself, we won't quit. We will go for every point we can from here on out, and hopefully we are still champions at the end of the year." The volatility is obvious in everyone's results except Edwards, who has finished eighth or better in each Chase race (ninth or better in his last

eight, dating back to the regular season), and Kevin Harvick, who has finished 12th or better in the Chase events. At the top, they are five points apart. The last four positions in the Chase standings are occupied by drivers in considerably worse situations than Johnson. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is 60 points out of the lead, followed by Ryan Newman (-61), Jeff Gordon (66) and Denny Hamlin (-86). *** Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvious -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, its not right by the door. -- I.E. in Mississippi When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around. -- S.F. in Pennsylvania (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Death in the City of Light is the gripping, rapid-fire suspense story of one of the most terrifying serial killers ever, a man who few of us have ever heard of. Author David King was browsing through old books in an antiquarian bookshop in Paris when he stumbled upon a wartime memoir that documented the serial killings of Marcel Petiot, a ruthless murderer who was eventually charged with 27 grisly deaths. Intrigued, he dug deeper. Using sources that include never-before-released police files, King draws readers into the shadowy world of Paris during the waning years of World War II. The crimes began to unravel on a March evening in 1944 when police respond to complaints from neighbors about toxic odors spilling from the chimney of a townhouse at 21 rue La Sueur. Upon entering, the two police officers are horrified to discover two coal stoves with charred human remains. A closer look revealed a pit that contained hands, feet, skulls and other body parts in various states of decomposition. Marcel Petiot, the homes owner and a respected physician, was arrested, and pieces of the story began falling into place. The doctor had posed as a member of the French Resistance so that he could lure his victims --- many of them Jews seeking to escape the Nazis --- into his house. He promised them safe passage out of Nazi-occupied France and then killed them. It is Kings meticulous research that takes readers to the very heart of the case. He examined cartons of police reports, read the interrogations of witnesses, pored over crime-scene photographs and even the detailed dossier from Petiots stays at mental asylums. The result is one of the most exciting true crime books of the year.

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves Agent Orange List The Department of Veterans Affairs has added ships to the list of those carrying veterans presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange. This is a welcome change that will save veterans a lot of legwork in hunting for very old documentation in their quest for compensation benefits. The additions to the ship list include those that the VA has confirmed either sent crew ashore, docked or traveled the inland waterways in Vietnam. The specifics: The ships were Navy and Coast Guard that were operating in the waters off Vietnam between Jan. 9, 1962, and May 7, 1975. Being on a ship in an open water harbor does not count. There are now 14 illnesses recognized as presumptive for Agent Orange exposure. This means you dont have to prove a link between your exposure and illness, only that you were there. Online, the long way to get there is: www.publichealth.va.gov/ exposures/agentorange/ or take a shortcut by going to www.va.gov and putting Ships List in the search box. The first three items that show up are what youre looking for: List of Ships Associated with Presumptive Agent Orange Exposure, Alphabetized Ships List and Ship Not on the List? An odd thing: The VA press release on this topic says that veterans who have evidence such as deck logs, ship histories, and cruise book entries should scan and send them to 211_AOSHIPS.VBACO@va.gov. Its almost as if the VA is looking for more proof of exposure. Additionally, the National Archives is collecting deck logs and more. Go to www.archives.gov and put dock logs Vietnam in the search box. Youll find a lot of resources. Be sure to read the blogs: Archives staffers actually post responses to queries. If you need help proving your exposure aboard a ship, call the Special Issues Helpline at 1-800-7498387 and press 3. Write to Freddy Groves, columnreply@gmail.com

DONOHUE: I have a problem with my feet swelling. They get so big that they hurt when I walk. My doctor is puzzled. He thinks maybe it's due to my heart pills, but he can't change them -- my heart doctor has to. I have had two heart attacks, bypass surgery and a defibrillator put in my chest. When I'm in bed, the swelling goes down to almost normal. When I am up, it returns, even if I am sitting. I'd appreciate any suggestions. -- E.L. ANSWER: I believe I'm safe in saying your problem is chronic congestive heart failure. Your heart is pumping so weakly that blood circulates sluggishly. When you're up or when you're sitting, gravity pulls fluid out of your leg's vessels, and it is the cause of your swelling. In the horizontal position in bed, gravity doesn't have this effect, and the fluid stays in blood vessels. The swelling is called edema (eDEE-muh). During the day, take frequent breaks to lie down with your legs propped up higher than your heart. When you sit, rest your legs on the seat of a chair put in front of you. Walk as much as you can during the day. The contracting leg muscles push fluid back into circulation. Limit the salt you eat; salt makes the body retain fluid. Read food labels. Most of our salt intake comes from the foods we eat, not from adding salt at the table or in cooking. But don't do either. Your total daily salt intake should be less than 5,700 mg, preferably 3,800 mg. If salt is on the label as "sodium," your total daily intake should be 2,300 mg or less. A better goal is 1,500 mg. Tell your heart doctor about your swelling. He might make changes in your medicines either by increasing the dose or switching to other medicines that make the heart pump with more force. There are other causes of edema, but this is the one that seems to fit you best. The booklet on edema explains its causes and treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc.

departments and home health aide groups, at the hospital, town hall and local college. Go online to google.com and put free flu shot in the search box, along with the name of your town. Even if you cant find a free shot this year, get one if your doctor thinks you should have it. To find a flu shot online, go first to www.flu.gov and scroll down the right side to Flu Vaccine Finder, and put in your ZIP code. Also check www.INeedAFluShot.org and www.findaflushot.com. If youre age 65 or older, ask your doctor if you should have the extra-strength shot for seniors. If you want to keep tabs on the spread of flu this winter, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website (www.cdc.gov/flu) with maps, information on prevention and more. Be sure to read the section on How Flu Spreads. Did you know that someone 6 feet away can spread it to others by coughing or sneezing? The vaccines this year include an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus and an influenza B virus, so keep your hand sanitizer ready. Use the wipes provided at the grocery store on the shopping cart handle before you even touch it. Learn not to touch your face with your hands. Remember, it takes a few weeks for the vaccine to become affective. * * * STRANGE BUT TRUE-by Samantha Weaver Youve probably never heard of Harvey Lowe, but in the 1930s he enjoyed a certain amount of notoriety; in 1934 he won the first World Yo-Yo Contest. Now that you know who he is, can you imagine what he had in common with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and notoriously flamboyant entertainer Liberace? It turns out that all three took out insurance policies on their hands. * * *

All visitors welcome! tffb MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Nov. 8, 1847, Bram Stoker, author of the horror novel Dracula, is born in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland. On Nov. 10, 1903, Mary Anderson receives patent No. 743,801 for her window cleaning device for electric cars and other vehicles to remove snow, ice or sleet from the window. Anderson tried to sell it to a Canadian manufacturing firm, but the company said the device had no practical value. On Nov. 11, 1921, three years after the end of World War I, the Tomb

of the Unknowns is dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia when an unknown American soldier is buried. A 2-inch layer of soil brought from France was placed below the coffin so that the soldier might rest forever atop the earth on which he died. On Nov. 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapses due to high winds. At the time, wind forces were not taken into consideration by engineers and designers. The remains of the bridge, at the bottom of Puget Sound, form one of the largest man-made reefs in the world. On Nov. 12, 1954, Ellis Island, the gateway to America, shuts it doors after processing more than 12 million immigrants since opening in 1892. First- and second-class passengers had easily passed through customs, but those in third class underwent medical inspections to ensure they didnt have a contagious disease. On Nov. 9, 1965, Roger Allen LaPorte, a 22-year-old member of the Catholic Worker movement, immolates himself in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York. Before dying, LaPorte, who was against war, declared that he did it as a religious act. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
