Sit comfortably erect, without leaning forward or backward, left or right. Close your eyes and think thoughts of good will. Thoughts of good will go first to yourself, because if you can't think good will for yourself if you can't feel a sincere desire for your own happiness there's no way you can truly wish for the happiness of others. So just tell yourself, "May I find true happiness." Remind yourself that true happiness is something that comes from within, so this is not a selfish desire. In fact, if you find and develop the resources for happiness within you, you're able to radiate it out to other people. It's a happiness that doesn't depend on taking anything away from anyone else. So now spread good will to other people. First, people who are close to your heart your family, your parents, your very close friends: May they find true happiness, as well. Then spread those thoughts out in ever widening circles: people you know well, people you don't know so well, people you like, people you know and are neutral about, and even people you don't like. Don't let there be any limitations on your good will, for if there are, there will be limitations on your mind. Now spread thoughts of good will to people you don't even know and not just people; all living beings of all kinds in all directions: east, west, north, south, above, and below, out to infinity. May they find true happiness, too. Then bring your thoughts back to the present. If you want true happiness, you have to find it in the present, for the past is gone and the future is an uncertainty. So you have to dig down into the present. What do you have right here? You've got the body, sitting here and breathing. And you've got the mind, thinking and aware. So bring all these things together. Think about the breath and then be aware of the breath as it comes in and goes out. Keeping your thoughts directed to the breath: that's mindfulness. Being aware of the breath as it comes in and out: that's alertness. Keep those two aspects of the mind together. If you want, you can use a meditation word to strengthen your mindfulness. Try "Buddho," which means "awake." Think "bud-" with the in-breath, "dho" with the out. Try to breathe as comfortably as possible. A very concrete way of learning how to provide for your own happiness in the immediate present and at the same time, strengthening your alertness is to let yourself breathe in a way that's comfortable. Experiment to see what kind of breathing feels best for the body right now. It might be long breathing, short breathing; in long, out short; or in short, out long. Heavy or light, fast or slow, shallow or deep. Once you find a rhythm that feels comfortable, stay with it for a while. Learn to savor the sensation of the breathing. Generally speaking, the smoother the texture of the breath, the better. Think of the breath, not simply as the air coming in and out of the lungs, but as the entire energy flow that courses through the body with each in-and-out breath. Be sensitive to the texture of that energy flow. You may find that the body changes after a while. One rhythm or texture may feel right for a while, and then something else will feel more comfortable. Learn how to listen and respond to what the body is telling you right now. What kind of breath energy does it need? How can you best provide for that need? If you feel tired, try to breathe in a way that energizes the body. If you feel tense, try to breathe in a way that's relaxing. If your mind wanders off, gently bring it right back. If it wanders off ten times, a hundred times, bring it back ten times, a hundred times. Don't give in. This quality is called ardency. In other words,

as soon as you realize that the mind has slipped away, you bring it right back. You don't spend time aimlessly sniffing at the flowers, looking at the sky, or listening to the birds. You've got work to do: work in learning how to breathe comfortably, how to let the mind settle down in a good space here in the present moment. When the breath starts feeling comfortable, you can start exploring it in other areas of the body. If you simply stay with the comfortable breath in a narrow range, you'll tend to doze off. So consciously expand your awareness. A good place to focus first is right around the navel. Locate that part of the body in your awareness: where is it right now? Then notice: how does it feel there as you breathe in? How does it feel when you breathe out? Watch it for a couple of breaths, and notice if there's any sense of tension or tightness in that part of the body, either with the in-breath or with the out-breath. Is it tensing up as you breathe in? Are you holding onto the tension as you breathe out? Are you putting too much force on the out-breath? If you catch yourself doing any of these things, just relax. Think of that tension dissolving away in the sensation of the in-breath, the sensation of the out-breath. If you want, you can think of the breath energy coming into the body right there at the navel, working through any tension or tightness that you might feel there ... Then move your awareness to the right to the lower right-hand corner of your abdomen and follow the same three steps there: 1) locate that general part of the body in your awareness; 2) notice how it feels as you breathe in, how it feels as you breathe out; and 3) if you sense any tension or tightness in the breath, just let it relax ... Now move your awareness to the left, to the lower left-hand corner of your abdomen, and follow the same three steps there. Now move your awareness up to the solar plexus ... and then to the right, to the right flank ... to the left flank ... to the middle of the chest ... After a while move up to the base of the throat ... and then to the middle of the head. Be very careful with the breath energy in the head. Think of it very gently coming in, not only through the nose but also through the eyes, the ears, down from the top of the head, in from the back of the neck, very gently working through and loosening up any tension you may feel, say, around your jaws, the back of your neck, around your eyes, or around your face ... From there you can move your attention gradually down the back, out the legs, to the tips of the toes, the spaces between the toes. As before, focus on a particular part of the body, notice how it feels with the in-breath and out-breath, relax any sensation of tension or tightness you might feel there, so that the breath energy can flow more freely, and then move on until you've reached the tips of the toes. Then repeat the process, beginning at the back of the neck and going down the shoulders, through the arms, past your wrists, and out through your fingers. You can repeat this survey of the body as many times as you like until the mind feels ready to settle down. Then let your attention return to any spot in the body where it feels most naturally settled and centered. Simply let your attention rest there, at one with the breath. At the same time let the range of your awareness spread out so that it fills the entire body, like the light of a candle in the middle of a room: the candle flame is in one spot, but its light fills the entire room. Or like a spider on a web: the spider's in one spot, but it knows the whole web. Be keen on maintaining that broadened sense of awareness. You'll find that it tends to shrink, like a balloon with a small hole in it, so keep broadening its range, thinking "whole body, whole body, breath in the whole body, from the top of the head down into the tips of the toes." Think of the breath energy coming in and out of the body through every pore. Make a point of staying with this centered, broadened awareness as long as you

can. There's nothing else you have to think about right now, nowhere else to go, nothing else to do. Just stay with this centered, broadened awareness of the present ... When the time comes to leave meditation, remind yourself that there's a skill to leaving. In other words, you don't just jump right out. My teacher, Ajaan Fuang, once said that when most people meditate, it's as if they're climbing a ladder up to the second story of a building: step-by-step-bystep, rung-by-rung, slowly up the ladder. But as soon as they get to the second story, they jump out the window. Don't let yourself be that way. Think of how much effort went into getting yourself centered. Don't throw it away. The first step in leaving is to spread thoughts of good will once more to all the people around you. Then, before you open your eyes, remind yourself that even though you're going to have your eyes open, you want your attention to stay centered in the body, at the breath. Try to maintain that center as long as you can, as you get up, walk around, talk, listen, whatever. In other words, the skill of leaving meditation lies in learning how not to leave it, regardless of whatever else you may be doing. Act from that sense of being centered. If you can keep the mind centered in this way, you'll have a standard against which you can measure its movements, its reactions to the events around it and within it. Only when you have a solid center like this can you gain insight into the movements of the mind.

Imagine that you are in a beautiful forest high in the mountains. You are seated comfortably on a moss covered rock a short distance from a high waterfall that lands in a deep pool before flowing further downstream. The river is surrounded by tall redwood trees that provide a high canopy and shade. The air is cool and comfortable and a gentle breeze blows through the trunks of the trees around you. Now imagine for a moment that you can feel all of your frustrations and negative emotions physically in your body. Imagine that they are manifested as a kind of tar or sludge that has accumulated in different areas all throughout your body, perhaps in your bones, and in your connective tissues at your joints, and in the soft tissues in your body. Any fears, any negative thoughts or feelings, any emotions that you would like to let go of imagine that these are all trapped within your body in this sludge. Could you stay with this feeling a moment, even if it is a little bit unpleasant or challenging? Could you let go of any resistance to these thoughts or emotions and let them be here in your body, just for now? Just be here for a moment, and feel what you feel, accepting that this is truth, this is reality, and you have a choice to reject it or to accept it. You have a choice. Is there any part of you that is grateful for what these negative emotions taught you in the past on your journey into this moment? If there is, stay here with the feeling of gratitude for a little while. If there is not, thats ok could you accept that too, and remain in the moment and in surrender to whatever you are feeling right now?

Now imagine that you are standing up and walking over toward the base of the waterfall. You can feel a faint mist of water hitting your face and arms that gets stronger and stronger as you approach closer. Just as all your negative emotions are now physically manifested in your body, this waterfall is a physical manifestation of pure Source energy and connectedness to Being. And as you walk under the powerful stream of falling pure water, the purest mountain water that exists, the water starts to interact with all those emotions and gradually dissolve them. Imagine now that you are standing tall on a moss covered rock, with your feet firmly anchored on the rough, green mossy surface, and the powerful stream of water is flowing over you and through you. Now the emotions anchored in your head are dissolving and flowing away, through your body, through the tips of your fingers, out the bottoms of your feet and through the ends of your toes. And the emotions and feelings and fears that used to be trapped in your neck and shoulders all dissolve away and flow out your fingertips and toes and out the bottoms of your feet and your neck and shoulders feel massaged and cleansed. Next the water flows through cleansing the negative emotions out of your chest and arms, and all the sludge of emotion is released and flows away. Its easy to cleanse the arms because the emotions just flow straight down, out through your fingertips. The flowing water starts off dark and dirty, and runs cleaner and cleaner until theres no difference between the water entering you and the water flowing out of your fingertips. The waterfall cleanses your core abdominal area and solar plexus and all the tension and negativity breaks up and flows away, down through your body and out your toes and out the bottoms of your feet. Now your entire upper body has been cleansed and the entire force of the waterfall goes to work washing away all the negative emotions contained in your hips and genital area. The powerful stream of water keeps working lower and lower, eroding all the fears and negative feelings contained in your upper legs, in the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, and breaking up any knots of negative emotion in your knees, and then in your calves, and reaching any sludge left over in your feet. Finally you feel the last fragments and droplets of sludge flow out the end of your toes. Could you remain here for a moment with the purest water that ever existed flowing all around you and through you?

Feel the water flowing from the top of your head, through the crown chakra, energizing it and purifying your connection to consciousness itself. The water flows downward through the third eye chakra, cleansing your intuition and your fundamental identity. And the water keeps flowing and energizes the throat chakra and you become aware of the fundamental vibrational frequency of the universe around you. Moving lower, the stream of water activates your heart chakra and you become aware of a profound tranquility, oneness, and a connection to all things. You can feel the water flowing around and through your solar plexus chakra, strengthening your physical body and your spiritual body, and creating a feeling of profound power, capability, and tireless energy. And the water activates the sacral chakra, conferring a sense of fluidity and grace, and a feeling of welcome change, flow, and motion. Finally, you can feel the water cleansing and purifying your base chakra, creating a deep sense of foundation and anchoring in your physical body. Imagine that you are standing there for a little while longer, with the pure water flowing along the axis of your physical and spiritual body, from crown to base. And could you imagine that the water now infuses you with a knowledge beyond knowledge and an understanding beyond understanding, of pure Source, Being, and the vast silence and stillness behind, around, and within everything that exists in manifested form? Could you simply stand for a moment in acceptance and in surrender to this new knowledge, that is not only an intellectual understanding, but that has been infused through all the cells of your physical body, and will remain there as long as you exist in this material form? Imagine now that you carefully step out of the powerful flow of falling water and walk back to the place that you started, seated in a position that is comfortable for you, on the thick carpet of moss a short distance from the waterfall. Just sit for a moment, with your body supported by this natural green carpet of moss, breathing in the cool and refreshing mountain air. Observe for a moment how your body feels. Observe what kind of thoughts if any now arise in your mind. As you stand up and open your eyes and prepare to return to your daily life, could you take a moment to recognize that this waterfall is always with you? Could you take a moment to remind yourself that the Source energy that binds all of us is flowing through you

constantly? Any time you want to, at any moment, you can connect yourself to this purifying waterfall of energy, and whenever you desire, it will cleanse your body and mind completely and leave behind only your eternal, abiding connection to the universal intelligence that is the Source of all life and everything that is.

Life is like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes the ride is fun and exciting. Sometimes it feels like we are blindfolded and have no warning about the twists, turns, dives, and loops headed our way. Then, depending on how we deal with the ride, we may end up regretting the adventure and are not willing to try another ride. We allow fear to hold us back. Fear of being hurt is what keeps us mired in the past. Past relationships, past jobs, past experiences of any kind can leave us holding bags full of emotional garbage. And then we try to carry this baggage around with us, only too eager to use it as an excuse why were not happy in the here and now, why we cant be successful in any given endeavor or relationship. Well, its because thus-and-so happened to me! we cry while hitching the baggage higher on our backs lest it fall off. We all carry baggage from our past. Too often, we put more attention on making sure we hold on to those painful old hurts instead of embracing the love, joy, and blessings of the present. Releasing the past frees us to be fully present and able to receive all the blessings available to us right now. We talk about wanting to be free, but do we really? Do we know how to let go of the baggage that drags us down and keeps us limited and in pain? If youre ready to start letting go of the things in your life that are no longer serving your good, you may benefit from a mentally visual exercise designed to help you start releasing from where youre actually hanging on in your mind. Here is a guided meditation you can use to help you begin letting go of some of the baggage youve been carrying with you. Whether its relationships, fears, worries, debts, or whatever, you can begin now to simply let go of those situations and conditions that have been holding you back from living your blessed life now. (Note: while people or conditions may not actually disappear, the purpose of this is to let go of your attachment to them so they no longer have any control over you mentally and emotionally so you can deal with them neutrally.) To begin, you may want to spend some time thinking about the things you are holding onto from your past. That sounds redundant, I know, if you are already allowing that stuff to weigh you down. But the purpose of this is to consciously think about it from an objective viewpoint if

possible. Distance yourself emotionally and just look at the stuff youve been carrying. Maybe take some paper and a pen to make some notes to keep your focused. For the purpose of this exercise, you may want to deal with one particular issue or the whole bundle. Realize you may need more than one meditation exercise to really feel results, but dont be surprised if one session does give you a feeling of greater lightness and relief! Once you have identified the items youre ready to let go of, give yourself some time and space to be alone. You need to be alone to do this, unless you have someone trusted who can vocally guide you through it; otherwise, read through this guide all at once and then perform the steps mentally, enhancing them as needed for your own style. Avoid lying down as that makes it too easy to fall asleep before your task is complete. Do sit comfortably so there is no stress or strain on your body. If you want very soft music in the background, thats fine (no vocals); a candle or candles adds ambiance to any spiritual exercise. Wear comfortable clothing so you will be warm or cool, depending on your environment. Turn off external distractions such as televisions, radios, telephones, etc. Try to schedule this time without interruption. When you are ready, begin relaxing your body with some deep breathing. You may have a favorite way of doing this; if not, simply begin by taking slow, deep breaths in through your nose and then exhale slowly through your mouth. As you are doing this, mentally prepare yourself by telling yourself that you are relaxing, you are releasing, you are preparing to let go and this is a good thing. If you feel yourself tensing up at the thought, choose to focus on relaxation. Attempt to come into this exercise without judgment of yourself, without attachment to the issues youre dealing with. Be a third-party observer so you dont get stuck in trying to hold on. When you are relaxed and your mind is gently focused on your task, imagine you are walking along a pathway; it can be anywhere you want it to be. Perhaps it is a greenway close by a river. Spend as much time as you want walking along this path. In a little while, you come upon a clearing near the edge of the river, like a boat dock. You think this is a nice area for a boat to be able to take on passengers. At the edge of the boat dock you notice a raft. It can be any size you want it to be: small, large, full-barge-size. At first you may wonder what its doing there, but you look back on the bank and notice lots of boxes stacked and ready to be loaded onto the raft. You realize its your job to start loading those boxes onto the raft. As you are picking up the boxes you notice they are labeled. Look at the labels what do they say? You realize they are labeled with the names of the items you want to release. These boxes are packed full of your excess baggage that youve been carrying in your life. Perhaps they say relationships (is there a specific name on the label?), or grief or fear, doubt, pain over any condition. Examine the label to see what is in the box.

You continue stacking the boxes on the raft. You think the raft is getting pretty full, but you keep working until all the boxes on the river bank are loaded onto the raft. It doesnt matter how many boxes are there there is plenty of room on the raft, even if it looks full. Keep stacking until all the boxes are off the ground and on the raft. After you place the last box on the raft, you step back. Look around the bank to make sure you got all the boxes. When satisfied that you got them all, look at the stacks on the raft. Realize this represents your bondage to the past. As you are looking at the boxes on the raft, you notice the raft is beginning to drift away from the bank. Relax. Dont worry. This is supposed to happen. The raft floats farther out from the boat dock. You realize the current of the river is pulling it out, away from you. You begin to feel a sense of relief as you watch the raft drifting farther away from you. You know that spiritually you are being released from the bonds that have kept you tied to your past. For everything there is a season and now is the season to let go of those things that no longer serve you. Its okay. Its a good thing. Take a deep breath. Notice how much deeper you can breathe. The raft continues to drift away from you. It is pulled into the center of the rivers current and begins flowing downstream. A breeze caresses your body and you look up. See how blue the sky is? Do you hear those birds? What an amazing feeling of freedom you feel! Look how blue the water is and how green the trees and shrubs are! Notice how everything is working in perfect harmony to provide a peaceful and healing environment. You can see clearly now how Nature provides healing in every situation; leaves fall off the trees in Autumn to make way for new growth in the Spring after a period of rest. You understand that Spirit/God does the same thing in your life. When you let go of those things that have served their purpose in your life, you are making the way clear for new and better experiences and this is the way its supposed to be. The raft continues to move downstream. It appears to be getting smaller and smaller. As it moves away, you lose your sense of attachment to the things in the boxes on the raft. It is even becoming more difficult to remember what was in those boxes. You are happy to see them being taken away. When you are ready, you can turn away from the river bank and continue on your journey. You can move ahead on the path, moving on around the next curve to wherever it takes you. As you go along, you are able to observe all that is around you. You are open and receptive to the next experience, knowing you are free from any past restrictions that would limit your ability to receive the blessings of the present and future. Perhaps you want to open your arms to the sky and express your gratitude with a big sigh of Thanksgiving, for Spirit/Gods ability to help you heal, to help you release, to help you move forward in your life freely and joyfully,

unencumbered by past judgments or error thinking. You are able to let go of all of it and say Yes! to your brand new life. You are free to create your new life in any way you see fit. Now that you are free from the past, you have unlimited opportunities ahead of you, which you welcome with eagerness and anticipation, expecting only good to come from them. You have no preconceived ideas about what you will experience, allowing yourself to remain open and receptive to the best and highest good that is coming your way. You realize your life is really good and you have the power to make it even better because you have let go of the past. When you are ready to finish your meditation, bring yourself back to your present awareness. Give yourself a few minutes to realign yourself in your environment. Notice the light feeling you have, feeling the true release you allowed to happen in your heart, mind, and spirit. Write in your journal how you feel. If you still feel bothered by some of the things on the raft, its okay. Realize you can do this exercise again and again, as many times as needed until you are able to fully let go of the idea or situation holding you to the past. Our past experiences have made us who we are today. We should honor them and be grateful for the experiences for if we are at the place of moving on, then they have done their job in helping us grow. Remain open and receptive to the lessons available in every experience, even if its simply the experience of appreciating what you have now, for you will be more blessed by every experience when you are fully present with it. You can adapt this meditation any way you see fit to meet your needs. Instead of a raft, you could load your boxes onto a train, airplane, or truck. Visual imagery is very strong and can be used to help you begin or continue creating the life of your dreams because thoughts are things and the things you think about most are those things you will be drawing into your life experience. Please seek professional help for any mental or emotional issues that you have extreme difficulty in handling. This meditation is intended to help you release your attachment to past conditions that you feel limit your ability to have a happy experience in your life now. It is not intended to replace any needed medical or other professional care. Blessings!
