Creating An Antique Finish
The Antique Look!
Articial patinas are very effective nishes for surfaces and are compared to lacquering or painting less timeconsuming. Patinas are used primarily on decorative objects with structured surfaces. They give objects depth and bring out details as well as providing a touch of antique. HomeDesign Patina Set
Order No. 090-496-200 The set consists of: 1 bottle of patina oil, 1 tube each of patina oil paint brown and cream. Application with a paintbrush is possible, but it is better to use a small sponge (included in the set). The sponge should be moistened with a bit of patina oil before applying a pea-sized spot of patina to a piece of cardboard and then dabbing it and soaking it up with the oily sponge. Relatively small quantities of patina paint are needed. After kneading the sponge a bit, the oily patina paint can be transferred onto the object. This process is particularly suited for smooth surfaces, e.g., for pure white dials that need to be shaded. It is possible to achieve gradations from light to dark, which could not be done much better with a spray method. This patina method can also be used to give furniture, picture frames and other accessories an antique look. A transparent nish is achieved with patina oil paints on untreated or painted wood, paper machee or unglazed ceramics. Particularly impressive effects can be expected on relief surfaces. Patina techniques are used in peasant style painting and in model building as well.

Craquelure Paste
Order No. 541-479-500 and 541-480-200 A very special effect can be achieved by applying this paste to ceramic, wood, glass, tile, etc., surfaces. Dries quickly and forms a fine crack pattern. After setting, the surface is treated with a thin coat of patina. After approx. 10 minutes, the patina layer is partially removed. The patina will remain in the cracks accentuating the craquelure pattern.

How To Do It:
1 Relief surfaces, e.g., picture frames or clock
shields, or create your own surface with a motif pattern and Craquelure Paste Nos. 541-479-500/ 541-480-200. Important: Absorbent surfaces must first be treated with Primer No. 540-530-400.

2 After the application, the craquelure paste will

set and develop cracks across the entire surface. The width of the cracks depends on the thickness of the paste application. Now, the object can be decorated with mat acrylic paints of your choice and then left to dry. The drying time can be shortened with a hair dryer.

3 Apply a small spot of Patina Paste (from set

No. 090-496-200) to a piece of parchment paper or foil. Soak up a bit of this paste with a small sponge and apply it to the object.

4 Apply a bit of patina oil to a soft cloth and wipe

over the applied patina paste. Applying more or less pressure during application can regulate the antique effect. Let dry.

Craquelure Set
Order No. 090-510-400 A fantastic antique look can be achieved with the craquelure effect. Two lacquers with different coefcients of expansion are applied in layers on the chosen object. After drying, the lacquer nish develops cracks, which are then lled with patina. The result is an antique and rustic look making the object appear valuable.

Processing:
The surface of the object must be dry, clean and free of grease. Use a soft paintbrush to apply the primer lacquer, rst from top to bottom, then from left to right to create a fabric texture. After approx. 80 to 100 min, apply the craquelure lacquer using the same technique. This coat dries within 30 to 60 min with small and irregular cracks and craquelure creating an antique look.

Patina Finishes with Wood-Effect Stains

Universal Patina
Set No. 090-476-600 This patina will give wooden or raw ceramic objects a fantastic, antique appearance. Reliefs and gures cast with a ceramic material can be given a wood-like appearance by coating them with Wax Stains. The wood effect can be increased by treatment with Patina Paste, which also will serve to highlight the articial wood structure and grain. Patina Paste based on an oil emulsion is completely free of toxins. Its shades match those of the various wax stains. After the patina coat is dry, treat the object with a soft cloth or brush to give it a semi-gloss lustre.

Wood-effect stains for castings made of ceramic materials: Self-cast SELVA ARTELIN castings have a carved look if nished with wood-effect stains. Simply apply the stain with a paintbrush and let dry. Patina Effect Creams

Order Nos. 090-546-200 to 090-549-900 Patina Effect Cream is based on a wax/oil emulsion and mixed with very effective, fiery pigments. With this Effect Cream you can achieve the opposite effect of Universal Patina No. 090-476-600. While the latter fills in the recessed areas of an object, Effect Cream enhances the raised areas. For this reason, this product is used mostly for finishing reliefs, crche figures or relief candles. Variation: The patina can be applied directly to a 3-dimensional surface using a brush. This will shade the raised areas while the recesses remain untouched creating an interesting finish. Step 2: After a drying time of approx. 2030 minutes, carefully remove some of the cream with a soft cloth or brush. The patina remains primarily along the sides of the raised areas enhancing the 3-dimensional effect.

How To Do It:
Step 1: The patina is applied sparingly to the finished parts using a soft paintbrush and then spread evenly.

Finishing with Wipe-On Metallic Paste or Gold Wax (Classic Gold)

Order No. 091-185-600 For applying to patina-finished or painted objects made of casting materials, wood, paper, and wax. This is the most reasonable and simplest method. The results are not quite as good as with the previously described technique, yet still very satisfactory.

First, cover the relief with a mat brown or black paint. Mat acrylic paints, e.g., are very suitable. After drying, apply a Metallic Coating or, better yet, Gold Wax with an almost dry brush as described above. Here, too, it is important that just the tips of the brush are stroked across the relief without much pressure. Repeating the process will increase the intensity of the patina nish.

How To Do It: Christmas ornament or Easter egg Step 1: Set the dust-free and degreased object on the end of a wooden stick. Apply some Art Deco Adhesive using a sponge of paintbrush. After approx. 20 minutes, the surface is dry and ready for finishing. Depending on the base material (absorbent or nonabsorbent), metal flakes can be applied within 1 to 12 hours. Step 2: Apply metal flakes and tamp them down with a soft, dry brush or a clean polishing cloth. Step 3: Remove any excess with a brush or cloth. Step 4: Let dry for at least 12 hours, and then carefully polish using a soft cloth or a cotton swab. To protect it against environmental damage, coat the finished work with Protective Lacquer No. 090-517-700.
