Large crowd gathers for free salmon

Its one of those miracles of nature. Each autumn, salmon from the big lake head up into the same rivers where they were born. The Little Manistee, Pere Marquette, Betsie and Platte rivers all see a big run. What sets the Little Manistee River apart from the others is the weir where the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) captures the fish and takes the eggs, which are used to stock waters not just across the state, but the country. Part of this spawning ritual is that the salmons journey ends in death. Much of the time, the fish are turned into pet food. This year, though, a local charity group has turned this phenomenon into a small miracle for local residents. Rolling Thunder, a group known usually for their work with veterans, gave away hundreds of the salmon captured at the Little Manistee and Platte River weirs last week. Anyone who wanted to broil or grill one up got a fish. On Oct. 13, a crowd of about 200 gathered in the parking lot of Manistees VFW Hall to get their free fish. There were so many salmon, most people got two. John Stocki, of Rolling Thunder, estimated he gave a way about 3,000 pounds

of fish that day. The group also gave the fish away at a location earlier in the week in Brethren. With the overabundance of fish, we were asked to distribute them, Stocki

said, adding that this particular batch came from the Little Manistee River. The group is known for helping veterans and riding motorcycles, but Stocki said they were eager to branch out to the general public. Were open to helping anyone in need, he said. The American Canadian Fisheries usually takes the fish from the DNR, but this year they contacted both Rolling Thunder and the American Legion to give them away for public consumption. Rolling Thunder member Calvin Murphy helped lift the fish out of the containers and into coolers and plastic bags at the VFW last Thursday. He said doing nice things for other people helps heal wounds for veterans like him. Its part of my therapy, he said. Times are hard and weve got to help out. Lori Jensen-LaBelle came up to Manistee from Scottville for the free salmon giveaway. She was very appreciative. I love fish, but I dont have a fishing license, she said. I think this is awesome. Its a waste otherwise. Why not feed people. Brother and sister Fred and Vivian Thomas came from Ludington and Scottville. Boiled fish is a real delicacy, Fred said. He added that he used to be able to fish for himself, but hasnt been able to recently because his shoulders are shot. Its helpful for me because theres no one to catch fish for me, Vivian said while holding a heavy garbage bag with two giant Kings in it. This is a God send for us. Stocki doesnt know how many more fish his group will be giving away. Were getting near the end of the run, he said.

(CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE) John Stocki, of Rolling Thunder, gets ready to plop a huge salmon into a womans bag. Folks lined up waiting for the fish to arrive. The salmon came from the Little Manistee River. Veterans Calvin Murphy and Stan Preidis helped give salmon away in the parking lot of the VFW last Thursday.

Starting the conversation: Supporting victims of domestic violence

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
Its happening in your city, your community and maybe to someone you love. Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime and although its a prevalent issue, more than one-third of Americans have never discussed it with a friend or family member. Many groups and organizations are working together to educate Americans and bring attention to the issue. The Allstate Foundation, a leading charitable organization focused on empowering women financially to end domestic violence, recently launched www. PurplePurse.com to enable women to start a discussion about the issue. Designed to look like an online fashion magazine, the website provides women a safe and informative place to educate themselves on how to end domestic violence. What many people dont realize is that abuse can be financial in nature, such as withholding banking information, controlling a partners money or misusing her financial identity and ruining a persons credit. This occurs just as frequently as physical abuse, said Michele Mayes, Allstate executive vice president & general counsel. We are rallying people behind the Purple Purse because it stands for economic empowerment and represents the center of a womans financial domain. Its also meant to convey the message that its okay to talk about it in fact, please do. For those who suspect a friend or family member is in an abusive relationship, talking about it with her can be a difficult but necessary first step. The most important thing you can do is to let her know that she has support and options to leave the relationship. The Allstate Foundation offers the following tips for starting the conversation: 1. Offer support without judgment or criticism. There are many reasons why a victim may stay in an abusive relationship, and many reasons why she may leave and return to the relationship many times. Let her know its not her fault and that shes not alone. Respect her decisions, even when you dont agree. Do not criticize or guilt her she needs you to be helpful, not hurtful. 2. Dont be afraid to tell her that youre concerned for her safety. Help your friend or family member recognize the abuse while acknowledging that she is in a very difficult and dangerous situation. 3. Avoid confrontations. There are many reasons why individuals experiencing abuse dont reach out to family and friends. Its important to recognize if she is ready to talk about her experiences while offering support. 4. Ask how you can be helpful. Dont try to make decisions for your friend because it implies that you think shes incapable of making good choices for herself and it may deter her from confiding in you in the future. Instead, focus on offering support and encouragement. 5. Encourage her to get help. Suggest ways she can get additional support. Help her look into available resources, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline number (800-799-SAFE) or a local domestic violence agency with specially trained advocates to help her out of the situation. If you or someone you know could benefit from additional information on domestic violence, visit www.PurplePurse.com for easy-to-use and important information about how to spot abuse, what to say to help a friend in need and where to turn for more guidance and resources.

Medicare changes: What you should know

STATEPOINT MEDIA
If you have Medicare or are turning 65 soon and will be enrolling in it, you need to be aware of new and proposed changes that could impact your life. For starters, the enrollment period is earlier this year for choosing or changing your coverage and your prescription plan. More importantly, unless Congress acts quickly, Medicare payments to doctors will be cut by nearly 30 percent January 1. This could threaten your access to physician care, as many doctors say they will be forced to stop accepting new Medicare patients. There are several things you can do to help make sure you continue to receive access to health care. Enrollment Changes This year, Medicare enrollment, including any changes to your prescription plan, is earlier, running from October 15th through December 7th, and those who fail to enroll or change their plans will be forced to wait until next year. This change was enacted to help seniors who used to wait until the end of the year and didnt have valid prescription cards each January. For more information, visit www. Medicare.gov. Limited Access Just as a huge influx of Baby Boomers is entering Medicare, access to doctors is about to become more limited. A survey by the American Medical Association (AMA) reveals that one in five physicians overall and nearly one-third of primary care physicians say they are already forced to limit the number of Medicare patients in their practice due to the ongoing threat of cuts and inadequate reimbursement rates. An additional cut of nearly 30 percent will make this situation worse, but it does not have to occur. Congress can vote to repeal the Medicare physician payment formula before the scheduled cut of nearly 30 percent. Many seniors are urging Congress to repeal the formula and stop the cut. If you are interested in making your voice heard, visit the Patients` Action Network at www. patientsactionnetwork.org, where you can email Congressional leaders through the site. You also can call them through the Networks hotline at (888) 434-6200. There is wide bipartisan agreement that we need to protect seniors access to health care, says Peter W. Carmel, M.D., President of the AMA. Seniors, as well as their family members, should contact their members of Congress and tell them to repeal the Medicare physician payment formula now. Wellness Opportunities Be sure to take advantage of new Annual Wellness Visits that Medicare has begun offering. New and established Medicare patients are entitled to these visits, designed to offer personalized prevention plan services. At these visits, doctors typically record a patients body mass index, blood pressure and other indicators in order to establish screening schedules for the next 5 to 10 years. By getting more involved in your health care, you can help ensure you receive the Medicare benefits to which you are entitled.

ADHD is a chronic condition of the brain that can impact childrens learning, ability to regulate their behavior, social skills and self-esteem, says Dr. Wolraich. But once a diagnosis is confirmed, ADHD treatments are available to help them control their behaviors. To help parents understand the new guidance on ADHD, the AAP has published a detailed and updated consumer resource book entitled ADHD: What Every Parent Needs to Know.

In it, parents can find the newest treatment options and management strategies that balance behavior therapy, medications and parenting techniques. For example, in preschool children with ADHD, pediatricians are now being instructed to first try behavioral interventions, such as group or individual parent training in behavior management techniques. For preschoolers with moderate to severe symptoms who dont exhibit significant improvement after behavior therapy, medication may be considered. For elementary school children and adolescents, the AAP recommends both medications and behavior therapy. More information on the symptoms and treatment of ADHD can be found on the AAPs website for parents, www.healthychildren.org/adhd. ADHD is a chronic condition that requires a team approach, according to experts, including input from patients, their parents, pediatricians, therapists, and teachers.
