Party Time!
Special occasions are always meant to be celebrated. And luckily, pet parents have even more reasons to celebrate during their furry babies birthdays, of course! I was organizing my digital photo files over the weekend when I came across Hitlers multitude of photographs from the day we got him 4 years ago, to just a few days ago in our bedroom. Amidst the hundreds of files, each year without fail on July 3rd, memorable photographs mark my furry babys birthday milestones.
our vision
We believe dogs and cats must have the best nutrition and health care available. We believe dogs and cats are not toys for our amusement; they have feelings, they are very loyal and they need our tender loving care. We believe the best way to acquire new pets is through pet adoption from the animal shelters. We are against selling dogs and cats in pet shops which involves prolonged confinement in small cages. We are against all forms of animal cruelty including chaining and caging dogs. We support the good work of organizations like Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Compassion & Responsibility for Animals (CARA), and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
our values
Truth be told, at first I thought I was spoiling Hitler a tad bit too much, especially when his 2nd birthday celebration with his furry friends and their pet parents in Bonifacio High Street made it to the lifestyle section of a major newspaper. But I realized fairly soon that for pet parents like me, celebrating the birthdays of our pets was more the norm rather than the exception.

Birthdays are special days the world over and when it comes to the birthday of a pet, a celebration is in order. Many loving pet parents enjoy celebrating the birthday, or adoption date, of their beloved cats or dogs. While pets ignore cakes and calendars, the humans in their lives relish the chance to spoil their pets with gifts and special treats. Even if your pet wont know the reason youre having a party, rest assured, they will enjoy the attention and your family can enjoy your furry babys special day.
If inviting other pets to the party wont work, then invite kids (but only if your pet likes and behaves well around kids). If you dont have children of your own, invite kids from the neighborhood, nieces and nephews, or the children of friends.

are more for the party guests than the guest of honor and will set the tone for the festivities. Instead of regular plates or bowls for food, use pet food dishes. Be sure they are clean before you use them. To cut down on expenses, use a combination of pet food dishes and disposable plates or bowls. Use the pet food dishes for serving rather than have guests eat out of them.
Your pets favorite food and treats should definitely be on the menu for your party, but remember the human guests too. Cupcakes for the humans, or cookies shaped like dog bones, fish, carrots, or some other favorite pet treat are great choices. Remember to keep the pet snacks away from the people, and the people snacks away from the pets as many people foods are toxic to pets.

Making birthday cakes for your pet is downright fun, and your pet will certainly love the taste of a homemade cake over the drab flavor of his daily kibble. The great thing about baking pet cakes is that you are free to use ingredients you might not consider for people cakes. Meaty canned pet foods add protein and a flavor boost to any batter. Pet cake recipes are simple and usually only require basic ingredients you may already have around the house, with very few exceptions. The steps are also typically simple. Mix the dry ingredients, mix the wet ingredients and combine both together in a well-greased pan. Batches are small, so baking times are minimal.

Include different environments. Have your puppy walk on grass, concrete, on busy streets, quiet streets, and areas with other animals. This is also the time to get your dog used to be handled during grooming. Kittens can also be socialized by having people come to your house or by bringing your kitten to other peoples houses, although its better to visit someone who doesnt already have a cat.
Socialization Tips
When youre ready to begin socializing your dog or cat, keep in mind these tips for success: Do it daily. Ideally, you should try to socialize your pet every day during the first 16 weeks. When strangers approach, let them pet your dog. Veterinarians can tell if an animal has been socialized the moment they walk into an exam room. Some animals come bounding up and are happy to see me and everyone else, while others hide and cower behind their owner. Life is stressful for them, says Bonnie V. Beaver, DVM, professor at Texas A&M University in College Station. Socialization helps make the difference . Animals are preprogrammed to become fearful of people and things that arent part of their everyday life, so they react appropriately when they are in danger. But you can introduce a new dog or new cat to a variety of situations when its very young so it doesnt live its life afraid of straying from its neighborhood or meeting new people. When you do, your pet will be more laid back and can enjoy life. Get them used to carriers. If you want your kitten to look forward to vet visits, leave its carrier out for playtime. Carry the kitten from one side of the house to the other and leave cat treats in the carrier. Reward your pet. Make your puppy or kitten feel good about new things by praising it during socialization and giving it small treats (break up a normal size treat into small pieces so your pet doesnt get too many calories). Give it about 75 minutes. Puppies and kittens are constantly learning; they become socialized to new things within 75 minutes of being exposed to them. Be gentle. Its important to keep a close eye on your pets reaction to new things. Dont force it if a situation seems too overwhelming and scary for your pet. Your pet may need to be exposed to that particular thing more gradually. Go for pet training. You can socialize your pet on your own, but if you need help, consider hiring a pet trainer or joining pet socialization classes. Socializing dogs and cats this way ensures that theyre better adjusted as adults and may be easier to train because theyre less distracted by fear.

Q. My dog got infected with fungus that affects the skin from one clinic that we had his teeth cleaned. Can I use over the counter fungal cream to relieve him from the itchiness that he is experiencing and totally cure him of this fungal infection?
A. First of all, you must choose the vet clinic or pet hospital that prioritizes their sanitation and hygiene. You bring your pet babies there to be healthy, not to get them sick. Fungal infection takes quite a while to cure, and you must be certain of what type of fungus infected your pet so you can determine the corresponding medicine that can cure the infection. Laboratory tests from skin scrapings, blood, or even plucked coat can be done in the vet clinic. If you have other pets in your household, you might want to isolate the infected pet so that the others will not be infected.
Q. I do not want to breed my female cat but she is displaying signs of interest to my other male cats. She is only 5 months old, is it the right time to have her spayed?
A. Usually, it is advisable to have your pets undergo spaying or neutering when they are around 6 months old, this is to ensure that they have already produced the reproductive hormones needed by their body for their growth and development. If your cat is mixed with male cats, they would eventually mate and she would be pregnant. It is better to isolate your female cat because they are induced ovulators (they can easily produce eggs) in the presence of a male cat. It is also advisable to have your male cats neutered as it is easier for them to recover after this kind of elective surgery.
Q. My Labrador only eats vegetables and yoghurt. I once gave him a piece of meat and he threw up. Is this normal?
A. Introducing meat to a digestive system that is used to a plantbased diet would not only cause vomiting but may also cause diarrhea and indigestion (the microbes in the gut may not be able to help digest meat), leading to loss of appetite and weakness. In order to ensure that your pet gets the best out of the diet he is used to, you might want to ask your vet for some supplements (vitamins, minerals and also probiotics/ prebiotics for a healthier good bacteria for the gut).

pet matters
Is it ever a good idea to give a kitten or puppy as a holiday gift? Most experts wave the red flag at the idea of holiday pets, but if the animal in question has been a long-considered family addition, it isnt always a bad idea. Here are some things to keep in mind when thinking of gifting a new pet this holiday season.
Important Considerations
DeFeo feels strongly about a no Christmas pets rule, but after hearing the Koehlers story, she makes a concession. That is the one exception I can think of when it would be OK to give a pet as a gift, says DeFeo. Because the person giving the pet as a gift would be the one caring for it. If youre considering doing something similar, Koehler has some advice. Dont take the kids with you the first time you visit an animal shelter to pick a pet, says Koehler. Theyre bound to fall in love with every puppy they see and a lot can go wrong if you let a 4-year-old choose the dog. Koehler knew what kind of dog would be best for her family. I didnt care if a dog was cute or how it looked, she says. I wanted an average-size dog that was gentle, athletic, and good with children. This is the perfect time of year to bring a new furry baby into your home. A pet is the perfect gift for yourself or someone else who is ready for the responsibility. You can make this gift doubly special by rescuing a homeless pet from a local animal shelter. Visit Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA), or People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to find beloved pets that need a home. You can visit their websites at www.paws.org.ph, www.caraphil.org, and www.petaasiapacific. com.

Coat Care
In addition to removing loose hair that would otherwise be swallowed or left on furniture, brushing promotes good circulation, stimulates the skin, and keeps the coat shiny. Its also a way to bond with your pet, as well as to check for any body changes that may signal a visit to the vet.
Grooming is an important part of your pets health care. Nails that are too long can shift a dogs posture and create structural problems down the line, and teeth that have never seen a brush can be lost. Despite the fact that they are relatively self-sufficient, cats do still need a little assistance in the grooming department. Trimming claws and cleaning ears are just two of the things youll need to help your furry friend with.
Bathing
Star t your dog off early in the tub, train him to allow himself to be bathed, and reward him continuously while washing him. Dont bathe him more than once ever y week or two, depending on the coat type. Bathing too often can lead to a dry, brittle coat and scaly, flaky skin. An older or injured cat may not be able to keep itself adequately clean and may need to be bathed. Some cats become very agitated during the process, however, so its up to you to make bathing as stress-free as possible for all participants. Youll probably want a helper so one of you can hold the cat while the other does the shampooing. Both of you will probably get quite wet, so have lots of towels at the ready. Its also possible that you may get scratched, so take a few moments to trim the claws first. Professional grooming is always an option, but it is still important that a pet parent be able to take care of at least minor grooming problems without ending up in a wrestling match with their furry babies.

Nails
Clippers come in many sizes and shapes; the most important thing is to look for a tool that you can handle easily. Choose from a scissors-like clipper or a guillotine-style clipper.Trim a bit of nail at a time to avoid cutting into the quick. Watch your vet or groomer cut the nails the first time so you can see how its done before doing it yourself.

Every once in a while, we love to spoil our pets in order to show them our affection and appreciation for the joy they bring to us. We bathe them with the most expensive shampoos we can afford, or we let them wear chic clothes whenever we walk them in the park. There are myriads of means in order to spoil our pets, but feeding them with treats is probably the most ideal method to make them happy. Treats are also good reinforcements that pet parents can use to let their pets learn certain kinds of tricks as well as obedience techniques. Not long ago, treats mostly consisted of fatty biscuits, or commercial treats containing preservatives and other additives, most of which are unhealthy options that profoundly contribute to the rise of diseases among pets. However, times have changed; as more and more pet parents demand for healthier dog and cat meals, many pet food lines are leaving the practice of manufacturing junky treats and are moving towards healthier treats for pets. Now, you could find healthy treats that include greenies, gourmet bones, and healthy biscuits, among others. Natural dog treats are new additions in canine treats. As their name implies, natural canine treats are made from the finest ingredients that are all natural and human-grade in quality, thereby ensuring that they are not hazardous to your pets health. Consequently, natural treats are far superior than commercial treats especially when it concerns ones budget. Even though your initial purchase of these edible pet products may actually cost more than the commercial treats available in your local grocery or pet store, a diet of natural meals and treats over the life span of your pet could actually result to lesser diseases and illnesses, which means your pet doesnt have to frequently visit his veterinarian and lesser vet bills on your part.
Using treats are a good means to reinforce your pet to learn new tricks and obedience techniques. Hence, it is important that you choose the right treats appropriate for his breed and nutritional needs. It is also essential that you pick treats that contain healthy ingredients.
If youre interested in giving human foods as treats to your pet, some safe and healthy options may include:
Green beans Carrot sticks Cucumber slices Zucchini slices Apple slices (without seeds) Cooked lean meats Baked potatoes (no unripe potatoes or potato plants) Bread (no raisin bread or raw bread dough) Unsalted pretzels Bananas Unsalted almonds Plain, cooked pasta Make sure that all treats are cut into sizes that are easy for your pet to chew. If you notice any digestive upset as a result of adding new foods, be sure to discontinue giving foods that are causing trouble. And please remember that treats should make up only five to ten percent of your pets diet--the rest should come from a nutritionally complete pet food.

The Chartreux
The name, Chartreux, has been associated with this breed since the 16th century. Some historians claim that the breed is named after the Carthusian monastery, the Grande Chartreuse, founded in the 11th century in south-eastern France. Others think that since the breed had a woolly coat, the name was derived from a type of Spanish wool, called Pile de Chartreux. The modern history of the breed began on the island of Belle-Ile off the coast of Brittany, France. The Leger sisters discovered a colony of the large blue cats and began to breed them in the late 1920s. The first Chartreux was shown in 1931 and later descendants went on to win a number of shows before the Second World War. Like other European breeds, their numbers were decimated during the Second World War and breeders had to reconstruct the breed by mating the few remaining Chartreux with stray blue cats. By 1970 the numbers were sufficient to disallow any further out-crosses. Chartreux were imported to the US during the 1970s and in 1987 was given championship status by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). This breed is relatively rare in North America and is characterized by its smiling face, massive body, and wooly coat. waiting until you are ready to play. Chartreux will exercise in short bursts and can be taught to retrieve. They adapt to most household situations and are quiet, almost mute, with only a high pitched chirp which is used infrequently. They will purr but not meow. Chartreux are calm and quiet companions with lots of patience and can adapt to being left alone during the day. They get along with other animals in the home and adapt well to small or large households. Chartreux get along very well with children, and children love these plush smiling friends. They make great apartment cats, being alert and playful without being destructive, and can become quite sedentary after the age of 4 or 5.
Cat Care
Chartreux are very healthy and can live from 15 to 20 years if given sufficient exercise and a healthy diet. Chartreux have a tendency to put on weight after they fully mature and should be fed a calorie restricted diet and encouraged to play more if they are putting on weight. Patellar luxation or displacement of the kneecap is common in some bloodlines and you should discuss the potential for this hereditary disorder with your breeder. The short- to medium-length plush coat is easy to groom and a once per week combing with a steel comb keeps the coat neat.
Characteristics
The Chartreux is a medium to large sized cat breed with large and muscular shoulders and a deep chest. The male is more massive than the female. The Chartreux are slow to mature and males may take five years to reach their full size of 12 to 17 pounds while females will only take 3 years to reach their full size of 7 to 11 pounds. The tail is fairly long and tapers to an oval tip. The females coat is silkier than and not as full as the males. The coat of the Chartreux is short- to medium-length, plush, dense, and double-coated and can even feel a bit wooly. The face is large, broad, and has wide jowls with a sweet smiling expression. The eyes are large, round, and quite expressive and can vary from pale gold to copper to orange with the deeper colors more desirable. The ears are small to medium sized and set fairly high on the head with rounded tips.
Color Varieties
The coat color can be any solid shade of grey-blue ranging from ash to slate, with pale silver highlights at the tips. Clear or evenness of color is prized in judging Chartreux. They have slate-gray noses, leather-blue lips, and rose-taupe paw pads.
Temperament
Chartreux are affectionate, self-assured, and almost have a dog-like temperament. This is not a lap cat and is content to remain nearby

Causes
Most cases of CPV infections are caused by the canine parvovirus type 2b which is transmitted either by direct contact with an infected dog, or indirectly, by the fecal-oral route. Heavy concentrations of the virus are found in an infected dogs stool, so a healthy dog will contract the disease if he sniffs an infected dogs stool. The virus can also be brought into a dogs environment by way of shoes that have come into contact with infected feces. There is evidence that the virus can live in ground soil for up to a year. If you suspect that you have come into contact with feces, you will need to wash the affected area with household bleach, the only disinfectant known to kill the virus. Breeding kennels and dog shelters that hold a large number of inadequately vaccinated puppies can also be a source for CPV. Certain dog breeds, such as Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Pit Bulls, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, English Springer Spaniels, and Alaskan sled dogs, are particularly vulnerable to the disease.
Prevention
The best prevention against CPV infection is to follow the right protocol for vaccination. Young puppies should be vaccinated at six, nine, and twelve weeks, and should not be socialized with outside dogs until at least two weeks after their last vaccinations. High-risk breeds may require a longer initial vaccination period of up to 22 weeks.

Diagnosis
CPV is diagnosed with a physical examination, biochemical tests, urine analysis, abdominal radiographs, and abdominal ultrasounds.

Demodicosis In Cats
Demodicosis, or mange, is an inflammatory skin disease in cats that is caused by various types of Demodex mites not visible to the naked eye. Demodex mites are commonly found on the skin of mammals, and in most cases are not symptomatic of an abnormal condition, but when the immune system is compromised by stress or illness, or the body is producing excess oil or hormones, the Demodex population may become excessive, leading to skin and hair problems. When the number of mites inhabiting the hair follicles of a cat become excessive, skin lesions, genetic disorders, problems with the immune system, and hair loss (alopecia) may follow. The severity of symptoms depends upon the type of mite inhabiting your cat. Although mange is rare in cats, Siamese and Burmese breeds appear to be at a higher risk. Lime-sulfur dips to the affected areas may help relieve symptoms. In either case, the general health status of your cat should be evaluated.
Prevention
General good health may help prevent some cases. Keeping your cat clean, without drying the skin, and in optimal health, will help to keep the Demodex mite population in balance. It is also advised that cats with generalized chronic mange not be bred, as the condition may be genetically based in some breeds and may be passed to offspring.
Causes
Mite disorders in cats are rare, thus there is little known about them. However, two of the species of mites that cause mange in cats have been identified. The first, Demodex gatoi, is potentially contagious and may be transmitted between cats in the same household. The second, Demodex cati, is associated with diseases of the immune and metabolic systems, such as diabetes. It has been found in some cases that impaired immune system or hormone imbalance will allow the Demodex mite to overpopulate.
Diagnosis
Skin scrapings are used to find and diagnose demodicosis. Hair samples may also help identify the specific mite responsible for the condition. A urine test may identify other possible causes for the skin conditions, namely those caused by a disorder in your cats metabolic system. Alternative diagnoses may include scabies or allergies.
Treatment
In approximately 90 percent of the cases, the problem is likely to resolve itself spontaneously. For severe generalized cases, longterm medication may be necessary for controlling the condition.

Is your dog kissing you when he slurps your face like a lollipop? There are several possible explanations for this behavior, some of which are purely biological: Bitches lick their newborn pups to arouse them from their postpartum daze. Licking serves to remove clingy membranes from the pup, freeing him up to move and stimulating him to breathe. Once the birthing and clean-up processes are over, the mom dogs licking her pups stimulates them to eliminate both urine and feces. It is a couple of weeks before pups will eliminate spontaneously. Licking also serves another more romantic role in the sense that it is a comfort behavior that assists with pups bonding to their mom and spurs on their mental development. From about six weeks of age, some pups lick their moms lips when they want her to regurgitate food for them. This behavior is a vestige of their wild ancestry, designed to ensure that they profited from the spoils of the hunt. Licking can also be a signal of submission and so is part of a dogs body language communication system. Pups and adults lick and groom themselves to removes traces of the last meal that would otherwise begin to decompose and smell.
Psychopathology
Some sensitive dogs in stressful environments compulsively groom themselves to the point of self-injury. Licking of this type leads to acral lick dermatitis (a.k.a. lick granuloma). Some dogs take to licking floors, walls, or furniture. Whatever the outward expression of compulsive licking, the mechanics underlying the disorder are the same. In treatment of this condition, first the underlying anxiety must be addressed. In some cases, it is also necessary to employ anti-compulsive medication to help break the cycle.
Lovey Dovey?
We should always bear in mind that any behavior can be enhanced learning. Psychologist BF Skinner immor talized the concept that reward increases the likelihood of a response. So it is with licking. If a dog licks his owners face perhaps as a vestige of maternal lip licking, out of anxiety, or just because his owners face tastes salty and his behavior is greeted with attention, hugs, and (human) kisses, he will likely repeat the behavior in future. So while face licking may not represent true romantic love, it nevertheless can sometimes be interpreted as some token of a dogs affection or respect ... and thats nothing to sniff at.
Psychology
Dogs, like people, engage in a number of displacement behaviors when nervous or stressed, and many of these behaviors involve self-grooming. When you are stuck at a red light, glance over to the driver next to you. He will likely be stroking his hair or looking in the mirror. Dogs have their own share of dilemmas, like going to the vet. Vets expect more anxious patients to begin nervously licking their lips as they enter the clinic. Some dogs lick as a gesture of appeasement and goodwill. They may lick a person to whom they signal deference to. But for some dogs, it seems that they engage in face licking because they can get away with it. When licking is performed for such a reason, it may be part of the center stage, attention-demanding behavior of dominant dogs. No lick! is a good command to have for them.
