Hunting Season Spaghetti Dinner
Vermont hunters are looking forward to deer
seasons coming in November and December --
and with good reason, according to the Vermont
Fish and Wildlife Department. Vermont has
more older, bigger bucks after a regulation was
enacted in 2005, protecting many yearling
bucks.
The antler regulation for a legal buck is
designed to recruit more older bucks into the
population. Hunters may take one buck with at
least one antler having two or more points one
inch or longer. Spike-antlered deer are protected
except during the youth deer weekend. A point
must be one inch or longer from base to tip. The
main beam counts as a point, regardless of
length.
Vermonts pre-hunt deer population is esti-
mated at 123,000 this year with the greatest
numbers of deer found in the southwest, east-
central, and northwestern regions of the state,
said Wildlife Director Mark Scott. This is about
10 percent fewer deer than last year, but it is
comfortably within the limits of the deer popula-
tion goal set in Vermonts 2010-2020 Big Game
Management Plan. Analysis of fawn and buck
body weights and reproductive capacity indi-
cates the deer population is in very good condi-
tion.
Youth Deer Hunting Weekend
Vermonts Youth Deer Weekend is November
5-6, this year, the weekend before the rifle sea-
son. A young hunter who has obtained a Vermont
hunting license and youth deer tag may take one
deer of either sex during youth deer hunting
weekend. Anyone 15 years of age or younger
who has successfully completed a hunter safety
course and purchased the required license may
obtain a free youth deer hunting tag to participate
in Vermonts special youth hunt. The tags are
available from license agents.
The young hunter must be accompanied by an
unarmed adult over 18 years of age who holds a
Vermont hunting license. The adult may accom-
pany up to two young hunters. Landowner per-
mission is required in order to hunt on private
land during the youth deer and turkey hunt week-
ends.
The antler restriction does not apply during
Youth Deer Weekend, and biologists hope to
measure, weigh, and age deer at 24 check sta-
tions across the state. These and other check
station locations are available on a map from the
departments website (www.vtfishandwildlife.
com).
Rifle Season
Vermonts traditionally popular 16-day
November rifle season begins on Saturday,
November 12, and ends Sunday, November 27.
One legal buck with at least one antler having
two or more points may be taken anywhere in the
state.
Muzzleloader Season
The muzzleloader season is December 3-11
this year. One legal buck may be taken with at
least one antler having two or more points with
the muzzleloader license tag. A regular hunting
license must be purchased to get the muzzle-
loader license. The muzzleloader license is $20
for residents and $40 for nonresidents.
In addition to a legal buck, a muzzleloader
hunter who received an antlerless permit may
take an antlerless deer in the Wildlife Management
Unit indicated on the permit.
Planning Your Hunt
The 2010 Vermont Deer Harvest Report,
available from the Fish and Wildlife Departments
web site (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) has a
wealth of information to help plan a hunt, includ-
ing the number of deer taken in each town. Click
on Hunting and Trapping and Big Game to
download a copy of the report.
Vermonts regular hunting licenses, including
a November rifle season buck tag and a bear tag,
still cost only $22 for residents and $100 for
nonresidents. Hunters under 18 years of age get
a break at $8 for residents and $25 for nonresi-
dents. Licenses are available on Fish and
Wildlifes web site and from license agents state-
wide.
Contact the Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Department for more information. Telephone
802-241-3700 or Email fwinformation@state.

The Barre Fish and Game Club is holding a Youth Deer Hunting
season spaghetti dinner at 5:30pm on Wednesday, November 2, at
its clubhouse on Gun Club Road in Barre. The dinner is free for
young hunters with a 2011 Youth Deer Hunting tag.
Club members and Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department staff
will give presentations on the history of the club, hunting season
prospects for this year, Fish and Wildlife laws, and Fish and
Wildlifes Green Mountain Conservation Camp Program.
We are excited to be partnering with the Barre Fish and Game
Club to help celebrate this years Youth Deer Hunting weekend on
November 5th and 6th, said the departments Director of Wildlife,
Mark Scott.
Reservations must be made by calling 802-479-1266.

Cougars Manage Tide
For 34-13 Victory
The Cougars of Mt. Mansfield Union High School managed
their first win of the season 34-13 over the Spaulding Tide last
Saturday at A. G. Pendo Field in Barre. With five unanswered
touchdowns the Cougars thought that they were rolling to a 34-0
first half score. As the half was about to end Tides quarter back
Kevin Collins hit Christian Hammack on a 45 yard pass to the
Cougars 5 yard line. With 26 seconds left in the half Collins com-
pleted a touchdown pass to Jon Kilian and with the point after put
the Tide on the scoreboard 7-34. Spaulding held Mt. Mansfield
scoreless for the remainder of the game and managed to add to
their score with a 75 yard touchdown run by Jonas Dorsett for a
13-34 final score. The loss gave the tide a 0-8 record and the win
brought Mt. Mansfields record to 1-7.
Tides quarter back Kevin Collins runs for a first down and is about to
be brought down by Cougar David Hodge during the first half . DAVID

Raiders Take Solons 3-1 In Montpelier
The U-32 Raiders field hockey team took the Montpelier
Solons 3-1 last Friday at their Senior Day game in Montpelier.
Two goals by Raider Stacey Woolaver and one from team mate
Kristen Keene nullified the game opening goal by Solon Jaye
Grundy. Raider goal keeper Lily Feldman had 4 saves and
Montpeliers goal keeper Sara Grundy stopped 9 shots. U-32s
record went to 6-6-1 and Montpeliers regular season finished with
a 4-7-2 record.

Russo Returns as Mountaineers Field Manager
The Vermont Mountaineers have announced the return of
Manager John Russo to the helm of NECBL franchise for the 2012
10th anniversary season.
Russo has been with the club for eight of the past ten years,
beginning with the 2003 inaugural season. Voicing his enthusiasm
about his return he said, Im looking forward to working with
General Manager Brian Gallagher again. Brian and I have had a
lot of success working together. Its always good to work for
someone when you know you have their full support, Russo
noted.
Gallagher echoed similar thoughts: There is no doubt that John
brings a wealth of baseball knowledge to the job. His acumen and
patience is also found in the more than two dozen former
Mountaineers who are now professional baseball players.
Russo, currently in his fourth year as Assistant Baseball Coach
with Division I Hofstra University, led the Mountaineers in a 2011
campaign that saw the team end the season in third place as one of
the hottest teams in a very tightly contested Western Division, and
earn yet another playoff berth.
Gallagher said 2012 promises to be a very exciting year for the
Mountaineers. Not only is the team observing its 10th anniversary,
they will host the annual NECBL All-Star Baseball game in July.
Once again the all-star game will give the Mountaineers an
opportunity to play host to the very best collegiate baseball players
in the NECBL, he said.
Russo will not be the only familiar face returning for the 2010
season. Assistant Coach Clint Brown will also be a part of Russos
coaching staff while outfielder Brian OGrady and NECBL All-
Star closer Kyle Grana are set to return to historic Montpelier
Recreation Field.
OGrady broke the Mountaineers single season base stealing
record last year with 25 stolen bases. And the Mountaineers set a
new NECBL base stealing record with 118.
Opening day for the NECBL 2012 season is set for June 7,
2012.
Golf Vermont Tourism Association
Donates to School Golf Initiative
The Golf Vermont Tourism Association recently presented a
check for $7,000 to the Vermont First Tee National School
Program Initiative.
Founded in 2004, the mission of the Golf Vermont Tourism
Association is to promote golf and tourism to visitors from outside
the state with the message that Vermont is a great summer destina-
tion.
The focus of The First Tee National School Program is to intro-
duce elementary school children to the game of golf and the life-
time values associated with the game through their schools
physical education program. Seventy elementary schools and one
University in Vermont currently participate in the program. The
Vermont First Tee National School Program Initiative has the
potential to impact more than 14,300 elementary school students.
The Vermont First Tee National School Program grants 75% of
each schools one-time cost for the program including: NASPE-
approved curriculums, SNAG (Starting New at Golf) develop-
mentally appropriate equipment, curriculum training for the
physical education teachers and facilitating field trips to local golf
courses. The Vermont Golf Association, Vermont PGA, Vermont
State Womens Golf Association, Vermont Senior Golf Association,
Vermont Golf Course Superintendents Association, and corporate
and individual sponsors generously provide funding for this pro-
gram.
Golf Vermont Tourism Association is very proud to be donat-
ing $7,000 to the Vermont First Tee National School Program and
helping to promote and grow the game of golf throughout the state
of Vermont, according to Dave Pfannenstein.

Ravens Say Thank You
The 2011 Vermont [Barre] Ravens semi-pro football team nished
the season winning their division and moved forward into the
league playoffs. It was a successful season for many reasons but
it could not have been accomplished without the support of our
fans and sponsors. We would like to recognize and acknowledge
those sponsor who are listed below.
The Vermont Ravens Board of Directors
I didnt like it the rst time I experienced it .I still dont like
itI might despise it. Two car tandems at Talladega or Daytona-
not a lot unlike watching Dancing with the Starsone strong
partner carrying a weaker partner in shoves and pushes, lifts and
dips, hook-ups and unhooks, springs to the front and slides back.
boring-big time boring. ESPN race analysts refer to it, like go-
ing to the prom or a dance still boring. Fans are not going to
sit and watch a prom for three and a half hours. But as the band
nished its last song it was Clint Bowyer breaking from the push-
ing role and charging by his Richard Childress Racing teammate
Jeff Burton exiting the fourth turn on the last lap to win his second
fall Talladega Superspeedway race in a row. The win was the one
hundredth Cup victory for RCR. Burton hung on for second and
his rst top-ve of the season. Part of me wants to cry.part of
me wants to cheer, said Burton. Coming that close after the year
weve had is pretty disheartening. Dave Blaney nished third- his
career best nish followed by Brad Keselowski, who jumped three
positions in the Chase points, 18 behind leader Carl Edwards, who
nished eleventh. Brian Vickers rounded out the top ve. Ironi-
cally it was Kansas Clint, who is leaving RCR at seasons end
that gave Childress his centennial win. It meant a lot to me to get
these guys back in Victory Lane before the end of the season, said
Bowyer. Obviously, I was trying to gure out where to pass him
(Burton). I was going. I was at least going to give him a shot.I
knew it was going to be a drag race. Kevin Harvick nished out-
side the top-ten and fell three Chase positions, from second to fth,
26 markers behind Edwards.
Mike Wallace in his rst Camping World Truck Series race since
2009 scored a win in Saturdays Coca-Cola 250 at Talladega Su-
perspeedway on the front bumper of Kevin Harvick Inc teammate
Ron Hornaday Jr. Hornaday ran second followed by James Bue-
scher, who made inroads into the point lead of Austin Dillon, in
third. Dillon charged back to a seventh-place nish after he was
penalized and moved back to 18
th
for not maintaining pace un-
der the nal caution of the race. The recovery allowed Dillon to
stay ahead of Buescher by three points in the standings with three
races left in the season. The win was the fth overall for Wallace,
who was substituting for Elliott Sadler, whose wife Amanda is ex-
pecting the couples second child. The win was the rst for Wal-
lace in the Truck Series since 2000 and his rst in any NASCAR
top three-touring series since he won in the Nationwide race at
Daytona in July 2004. The two top nishers are a combined 105
years old- Wallace is 52 and Hornaday 53. Wallace was visibility
shaken emotionally when he climbed from the truck in Victory
lane. Im very emotional right now, because a lot of people doubt
you, Wallace said with tears in his eyes. They doubt your ability.
An opportunity like this just proves, Hey, I can get it done. Give
me something good to drive and I can prove I can do it. Wal-
lace continued, Im numb. My sons at home, my daughters.I
wish they were all here. Its my wife (Carla) and my anniversary
this weekend. Its a cool anniversary. This is your exotic weekend,
honey, Wallace said as he turned to his wife. Johnny Sauter, who
came into the event second in points just ve points behind Dillon,
suffered a major setback in an early wreck but limped home 15
th

and nds himself 14 points out of rst in third and two ahead of
Hornaday in fourth.
Garage Garble
Eight-time American Tour Champion Brian Hoar career earn-
ings topped the quarter million mark on the heels of an impressive
2011 season in which he pocketed $65,000. Hoar along with his
Rick Paya led RPM team put together a season worthy of promi-
nence in the ACT history books on the way to a third consecutive
title. Hoar nished outside the top-ten just once in twelve 2011
starts and tied the previous record of ve wins, which he set back
in 1999. Hoar has a record career 33 wins. Not included in those
statics are special events wins at the 49
th
Annual Milk Bowl, the
Showdown at Chaudiere, a 100-Lap segment of the Goodyear
Speedweeks Cup at New Smyrna Speedway (FL). Hoar and his
RPM team will be honored as Tour Champions for the eighth time
in twenty seasons at the 2011 Banquet of Champions in January.
As for the veteran Kenny Wallace, after gridding the No. 09
RAB Racing Toyota on Nov. 5 at Texas Motor Speedway, he of-
cially became the NASCAR Nationwide Series all-time starts
leader. Wallace tied the record of 519 starts set by his good friend
Jason Keller, last Friday night at Charlotte. Over his 22-year series
career, Wallace has posted nine wins, 10 poles, 65 top ves and
170 top 10s. Hes currently seventh in the driver standings and
aiming for his rst top-10 nish in the points since a seventh in
2005.
Dover, New Hampshires Wayne Helliwell Jr. has locked up
the American Canadian Tours Ford Blue Oval Challenge and
the $5,000 top price for the second consecutive year. Helliwells
E-Keys 4 Cars team and owner
Bruce Bernhardt competed in
21 eligible events-more than any
of the fteen Challenge teams.
Helliwell, a former Lee USA
Speedway champion competed
full-time on the ACT Late Model
Tour for the rst time in 2011
and nished an impressive sec-
ond in the nal ACT standings.
Including two wins at ACT afli-
ated tracks, Helliwell earned nine
top-ves and 15 top-10s in his
21 races. He had three podium
nishes (top-three) during the
12-event ACT season at White
Mountain Motorsports Park (N.
Woodstock, NH) , Beech Ridge
Motor Speedway (Scarborough
, ME) and Circuit Riverside
Speedway (Ste-Croix, QC).
This has been a great program
for our race team, said Bruce Bernhardt. We set a goal to try and
repeat as winners of the Blue Oval Challenge and decided to race
as many races as we could to achieve that. I am very proud of our
team and appreciate the support that Ford has given us over the
past couple years,
Ron Silk survived an eventful season nale to take home the
2011 NASCAR Whelen Modied Tour championship in the Suno-
co World Series of Speedway Racing at Thompson International
Speedway last weekend. The 28 year-old Silk, a six-year veteran
of the Whelen Modied Tour, survived an early-race accident to
nish 16th and clinch the rst championship of his career.
With two weeks off, followed by the nal three races, there are
two opportunities for history to be made by seasons end a fourth
consecutive owner title for Joe Gibbs Racing, or the driver and
owner titles could be split among two teams but won by the same
organization Roush Fenway Racing. Ever since 2007, when Carl
Edwards won the driver championship but was unable to unify
it with the owners title, he has wanted to win an owner title for
Jack Roush. Richard Childress Racing won the owner title in 07.
In 2008, Joe Gibbs Racings No. 20 Toyota claimed the owner
championship while Clint Bowyer won the driver title for Richard
Childress Racing. Then the following year, Kyle Busch unied the
championship (2009) in the No. 18 Toyota and last year, the No.
18 again claimed the owner title while Brad Keselowski won the
driver championship for Penske Racing. That 2010 championship
tied Joe Gibbs with Bill Baumgardner for most consecutive owner
championships three in series history. Only three points sepa-
rate the top two in the owner standings and if Joe Gibbs Racing is
to set the mark with four straight, it will have to overcome the fo-
cused No. 60 team, which has gained 47 points over the last three
races. Busch and Edwards will face off in two of the nal three
races (Texas and Homestead-Miami). Ricky Stenhouse Jr. main-
tains the driver standings lead over second-place Elliott Sadler.
However, Stenhouse has seen his 22-point advantage over Sadler
just three weeks ago following Dover shrink to 15 points following
last Friday nights race at Charlotte. Stenhouse continues to hold
the standings lead by being consistent. He posted his sixth con-
secutive top-10 nish at Charlotte. However, Sadler has countered
with two straight top-ve efforts, which have resulted in the cur-
rent decit, the closest hes been to Stenhouse since the September
race at Chicagoland when he was 14 points out of rst.
What Theyre Saying
The electronic fuel injection car seems to improve every time
I test it. Now we can put ngers on problems and x them pretty
quick, which is really good news. At the end of the day, my goal
is to give them (NASCAR) the right feedback so when the regular
drivers get in them, they wont know the difference.- Mike Skin-
ner on testing EFI cars at Phoenix
Next Lap
Its race number seven in the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup
and Martinsville Virginias .526-mile paper-clip shaped track with
its unique long asphalt straight-aways and concrete-narrow tight
turns for the 6rd Annual Tums Fast Relief 500 (ESPN, 2:00 p.m.).
Denny Hamlin is the defending race champion leading the 2010
event 2 times for 40 laps. Like the big-one at Talladega the fre-
quency of little ones at Martinsville could spell disaster for a
Chase contender and play big in the nal point outcome.

Lane at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, has topped over a quarter mil-
lon dollars in career winnings on the American Canadian Tour on the
heels of an impressive 2011 season.

SURVEY REVEALS WILDLIFE HAVE
HIGH RECREATIONAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE
By John Hall
The MISSION of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
is the conservation of all fish, wildlife and plants and
their habitats for the people of Vermont.
WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM
FEDERAL EXCISE TAX
ON HUNTING &
FISHING EQUIPMENT 42%
VERMONT HUNTING,
FISHING LICENSES FEES 39%
OTHER SOURCES 19%
Vermonts hunters have helped restore many species of wildlife since 1900s through their purchase of hunting
licenses, and then, beginning in the 1930s, through taxes on hunting equipment.
The most notable species to benefit: peregrine falcon, common loon, osprey, Canadian geese, wild turkeys,
fishers, wood ducks
Through careful management and protection , white tailed deer, black bears, moose, bobcats and beaver were
brought back from extremely low numbers in the 1800s to the healthy populations we have today.
How much are Vermonts wildlife resources worth? Most of
us would agree you cant put a dollar value on them. Many of
the memories we have of wildlife experiences are priceless - that
monster buck fading into early morning fog, a Canada jay shar-
ing sandwich crumbs in the Northeast
Kingdom, or the baleful eye of a big northern pike as it chases
our lure, looks up and turns, boiling the water next to the boat.
But, our fish and wildlife are important to those of us who live
in Vermont, and they actually contribute greatly to our economy
as was revealed in the most recent National Survey of Fishing,
Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, conducted by the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-
Associated Recreation has become one of the most important
sources of information on fish and wildlife recreation in the
United States. Conducted at five-year intervals since 1955, the
survey quantifies the amount of recreation and expenditures that
can be attributed to these resources. Federal, state and private
organizations use the information found in the survey results to
manage wildlife, market products and look for trends.
Benefits Involve More Than the Money All told, the federal
survey shows those of us who fish, hunt, watch, feed and pho-
tograph wildlife spent more than $379 million on these activi-
ties in Vermont. Thats significant no matter how you look at
it, and it is sure to make Vermont business owners take notice
and think about the opportunities associated with these pur-
suits.
