Downloading Symantec Data Loss Prevention Software

Symantec Data Loss Prevention software is delivered in ZIP file archives that you download. Place all of your downloaded ZIP files in the DownloadHome/ directory as described belowdo not create your own subdirectories. Download your software into DownloadHome from FileConnect. Note that each Symantec Data Loss Prevention product may have multiple components (ZIP files) and many components have platform-specific ZIP files. Since your order can consist of several different product components, you need to download multiple ZIP files from FileConnect until you have obtained all of your software. FileConnect only initiates the download of one component ZIP file at a time. Within any given Symantec Data Loss Prevention product, you may not want to download all available files. For example, if you only have Windows systems, you may not want to download software for Linux platforms. Platform-specific download files indicate Win or Lin in their filenames. Note that many products share files in common; for example, all of the Network name products share a common ..._Platform_... file. You only need to download such files once, even if you have purchased multiple products that list them. While there is no harm in downloading the same file multiple times, it is not necessary or efficient. See Minimizing Downloads on page 9 for detailed information on how to minimize your downloads.

To Download Software From FileConnect

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Go to FileConnect at https://fileconnect.symantec.com. (If you are at the Licensing Portal, click Get Software.) Choose your language on the FileConnect Language screen. Enter the serial number for the product you want to download. (For multiple products you have to enter each serial number separately and perform separate downloads for each one.) Accept the license agreement. Click the name of the product; for example, Symantec Data Loss Prevention Products 11.1 Multilingual. Choose either HTTP Download or Managed Download, and then click Select. HTTP Download (Recommended). In conjunction with a commercial download manager (such as FreeDownloadManager LITE), HTTP download is the recommended download method. Using HTTP Download can significantly increase the speed of large downloads by making them non-blocking and thus allowing them to run in parallel. After starting one file download, you can return to the download screen and start the next download right away. Managed Download. This launches a Java-based download manager, which downloads files serially. This is usually a slower process. Note that Managed Download resets the file timestamps to the time of download, rather than preserving the original ZIP file-creation timestamp. This can make it more difficult to manage various versions over time.

See Minimizing Downloads on page 9 for related information. 7. On the File Selection screen, choose one component ZIP file to download. 4

8. 9.

Click Begin Downloading. When asked, specify that the file be saved in your DownloadHome directory.

10. After the download has been initiated, you are returned to the File Select screen. Choose which component to download next. 11. When all of your product component ZIP files have been downloaded, extract the ZIP files as described below in Extracting Your Software on page 5.

Extracting Your Software

Once you've downloaded your ZIP archives into DownloadHome, extract each ZIP file directly into the DownloadHome directory. Symantec Data Loss Prevention ZIP archives each contain a common tree structure with a top-level root directory called DLP/. Extract (unzip) the contents of each ZIP file in your DownloadHome directory so that the resulting tree looks like DownloadHome/DLP/. CAUTION: Windows may supply an incorrect default Extract filenamedo not use it. Extract the files directly into your DownloadHome directory.

Example:
Suppose you decide to use c:/DLP_files/as your DownloadHome. 1. 2. Open and extract each archive into this same directory. Your Symantec Data Loss Prevention software is now available in the tree c:/DLP_files/DLP/

This is the tree that all Symantec Data Loss Prevention product documentation refers to.

Verifying the Directory Structure

After you have extracted all the ZIP files, you have a complete set of the Symantec Data Loss Prevention software you have purchased in a common tree rooted at your DownloadHome directory. At the end of the process you should see something similar to the abbreviated example shown below: c:/DLP_files/ (or whatever you chose as your DownloadHome) DLP/ Oracle_11gR2_Win/ Oracle_11.2.0.1.0_32bit_Server_Win/ win32_11gR2_database_1of2.zip ... Symantec_DLP_11_Win/ 11.1.1_Win/ Docs/ ... New_Installs/ x64/ 5

ProtectInstaller_11.1.1.exe Endpoint/ SymantecDLPWinAgentInstaller_11.1.1.zip ...

You may notice various levels of versioning within this tree structure. As Symantec Data Loss Prevention software evolves and new revisions are released, they can be downloaded into this same tree.

Installing the Product

Now that the contents of your ZIP files have been extracted into their proper location, the installation documentation for your products can be found in the following location: c:/DLP_files/ (or whatever you chose as your DownloadHome) DLP/ Symantec_DLP_11_Win/ 11.1.1_Win/ Docs/ Symantec_DLP_11.1.1_Install_Guide_Win.pdf

For Symantec Data Loss Prevention Standard, the installation documentation for your products can be found in the following location: c:/DLP_files/ (or whatever you chose as your DownloadHome) DLP/ Symantec_DLP_11_Win/ 11.1.1.Win/ Standard_Docs/ Symantec_DLP_Standard_11.1_Install_Guide_Win.pdf

If you are doing a version upgrade, the upgrade software and upgrade guides are stored in an appropriately named directory, for example: c:/DLP_files/ (or whatever you chose as your DownloadHome) DLP/ Symantec_DLP_11_Win/ 11.1_Win/ Upgrade_11.x_to_11.1/

Perform an installation or upgrade according to the instructions in these guides. Note that the installation or upgrade requires a valid License File. (See Obtaining Your License Files on page 2.)

Checking for Release Updates

There may be a Release Update available for your software. Release Updates are incremental collections of important maintenance hotfixes that all customers should add to their installations to bring them up to date. Release Updates are cumulative, so you need only install the latest one to also receive all fixes delivered in all previous Release Updates. 6

NOTE: All customers should subscribe to the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Knowledgebase to receive notifications when new Release Updates become available. In order to be informed of New Hotfixes and New Release Notifications you must subscribe to email notifications through the Knowledgebase System. To subscribe 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Go to https://kb-vontu.altiris.com. Click New user? for validation and access. Fill out the form and click Submit. When your access is approved, an email is sent with your login credentials. Log in to the Knowledgebase at https://kb-vontu.altiris.com. Click the plus sign (+) next to Vontu on the left hand side of the screen to expand the category. Click Bulletins. Click Subscribe/Unsubscribe. Click Subscribe on the pop-up.

10. Click Submit.

FileConnect
Release Updates are added to the list of downloadable ZIP files within each Product affected by the Release Update. Using a Serial Number corresponding to any of these products, visit https://fileconnect.symantec.com and locate the Release Update ZIP file for your platform. Update ZIP files have names like Symantec_DLP_11.1.1_ReleaseUpdate_Win.zip. If found, download each appropriate ZIP file and extract them into your DownloadHome directory, then follow the installation instructions in the ZIPs Release Notes or Installation Guide. Each Release Update will generally update all possible products, but if in doubt you can refer to the table under Minimizing Downloads on page 9 in this document to see which products share components these products also share the same Release Updates.

Background Information
License Management
A valid License File is required at installation or upgrade time to install and activate your Symantec Data Loss Prevention software. New customers use the Licensing Portal at https://licensing.symantec.com/ acctmgmt/index.jsp to generate their licenses. Upgrade customers receive a link to their license files in their Version Upgrade Notification. If you are a new customer and are unable to obtain a valid License File, or are an upgrade customer and did not receive your Version Upgrade Notification, contact Symantec Customer Care at http://www.symantec.com/business/support/assistance_information.jsp. See Obtaining Your License Files on page 2 for more information. Licenses for all Symantec Data Loss Prevention products are managed using one of the following methods: 7

Version 9 and earlier licenses consist of a short license string. Version 10 and later licenses consist of a Symantec-standard License File (.slf file).

Beginning with Symantec Data Loss Prevention 10.0, all customers must use a License File to activate their products. These files can be created or changed only by Symantec. There is no backwards compatibility with any prior license strings.

Components Packaged into ZIP Files

Symantec Data Loss Prevention products are packaged into multiple downloadable components. You receive access to only those components that correspond to your purchase. Each component is delivered as a single ZIP file. When extracted, the ZIP files create a directory tree with the root ../DLP/ Symantec DLP/ Common directory structure Superset of all components, all variations .zip .zip Customer site DLP/ Common directory structure ... .zip Only purchased components

.zip ... .zip

Transfer purchased components via: - FileConnect - FTP site (for Hotfixes)

In the above example, the customer is able to download two ZIP files; however, the middle ZIP file is not included in this particular order.

International Language Support and Language Packs

By default, Symantec Data Loss Prevention products perform detection on data containing supported languages other than English. Localized Endpoint Agent dialogs are also supported. See the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Administration Guide or the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Standard Administration Guide for detailed information about language support. Language Packs for Symantec Data Loss Prevention provide a limited set of non-English languages for the Enforce user interface and online Help system. Note that these language packs are only needed to provide a translated user interface and Help system; they are not needed for data detection. As they become available, Language Packs for Symantec Data Loss Protection are distributed along with the software products they support. They can be downloaded and added to an installation if desired. These language packs do not require any additional purchase or license. Consult the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Administration Guide for details on how to add and enable a language pack. Language Packs are distributed as downloadable files on FileConnect with file names in the form: Symantec_DLP_11.1_Lang_Pack_language.zip. For example:

Symantec_DLP_11.1_Lang_Pack-JP.zip (Japanese) Symantec_DLP_11.1_Lang_Pack-FR.zip (French)

Minimizing Downloads
Many Symantec Data Loss Prevention products share the same components. Consult the following table to minimize the number of downloads needed to receive the software for all your purchased products. Table 1 shows a Windows example. Linux is similar. Note that the Oracle file named Oracle_11.2.0.1.0_CPU2010OCT_Lin32.zip is updated and renamed every three months to reflect the date of the latest Oracle patch level. Note that the documentation files for Symantec Data Insight installation and administration are contained within the ZIP file Symantec_DLP_11.1_Data_Insight_Win-IN.zip. The documentation file for the Symantec Data Loss Prevention implementation of Data Insight is included in the ZIP file Symantec_DLP_11.1.1_Docs_Win-IN.zip, and for the localized document, within the language packs. The localized documentation files for the Symantec Data Loss Prevention products are contained within the ZIP files for the language packs. The English documentation files for the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Standard products are in Symantec_DLP_11.1.1_Standard_Add-Ons_Win-IN.zip. The localized documentation files for the Symantec Data Loss Prevention Standard products are each in their own ZIP files.
