Terms
1. Application-Software used to carry out a particular task, such as
word processing or desktop publishing.
2. BIOS (explain acronym and define)- A program built into every PC
for setting up very basic things, like how many hard and floppy
disks you have and what type they are; the first thing that loads
when you start your PC. ( Basic Input/Output System)
3. Cursor-a moving placement or pointer that indicates a position
4. Database- a structured collection of records or data that is stored in
a computer so that a computer program can consult it to answer
queries.
5. Desktop-a computer made for use on a desk in an office or home
and is distinguished from portable computers such as laptops or
PDAs
6. Desktop Publishing-combines a personal computer and page layout
software to create publication documents on a computer for either
large scale publishing or small scale local economical multifunction
peripheral output and distribution
7. DOS-Usually refers to MS-DOS, which was the standard operating
system for PCs until Windows 95 came out, now pretty much
obsolete
8. Education-encompasses teaching and learning specific skills the
imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well-developed
wisdom
9. Entertainment-an event, performance, or activity designed to give
pleasure or relaxation to an audience
10. Icon-an image, picture, or representation; it is a sign or likeness that
stands for an object by signifying or representing it, or by analogy,
as in semiotics
11. Menu bar-a region where computer menus are housed. Its purpose
is to house window- or application-specific menus which provide
access to such functions as opening files, interacting with an
application, or help.
12. Operating System-is the software that manages the sharing of the
resources of a computer. An operating system processes raw
system data and user input, and responds by allocating and
managing tasks and internal system resources as a service to users
and programs of the system
13. Program-a collection of instructions that describes a task, or set of
tasks, to be carried out by a computer
14. Programming Language-an artificial language that can be used to
control the behavior of a machine, particularly a computer

15. Research-is a intellectual investigation and aimed at discovering,
interpreting, and revising human knowledge on different aspects of
the world
16. Spreadsheet-a rectangular table (or grid) of information, often
financial information
17. Toolbar-is a row, column, or block of onscreen buttons or icons that,
when clicked, activate certain functions of the program
18. Web Application (Browser)- is an application that is accessed via
web over a network such as the Internet or an intranet.
19. Window-A family of operating systems from the Microsoft
Corporation, standard on most PCs
20. Word Processing-A program used for creating documents, letters
etc. The best known is Microsoft Word

Categories
A. You need to find one program that is installed on the computers
at our school for each of the nine categories below.
B. You must find at least ten other programs (they may be
programs at our school or programs not at our school) and list
them in the correct categories. The extra ten programs must be
within at least four of the different categories.
