Healthcare Tops Nation's Fastest-Growing Jobs
October 22, 2007
Healthcare, the nation's largest field of employment, is about to become even larger. By
2014, this field is expected to grow by more than 27%, compared with 14% for all other
fields combined. In fact, this growth will account for the addition of 3.6 million new jobs,
according to The Editors at JIST, co-authors of the newly released Health-Care
CareerVision Book and DVD. And with the demand for health-care workers growing, the
job market is booming with diverse opportunities. Based on information from the U.S.
Department of Labor, the book identifies the fastest-growing jobs in health-care, that range
from jobs requiring only short-term, on-the-job training to those that require a professional
degree, achieved through years of education, training and internships. The fastest-growing
occupations in healthcare include: home health aides (56% growth rate); medical
assistants (52.1% growth rate); physician assistants (49.6% growth rate); physical therapist
assistants (44.2% growth rate); and dental hygienists (43.3% growth rate).

Recruiters' Confidence In Executive Hiring Market Rebounds
In the midst of growing concern surrounding the pace of U.S. economic growth, the outlook for the
executive employment market remains positive.
ExecuNet's exclusive Recruiter Confidence Index (RCI), a leading indicator for executive
recruitment activity, rebounded in September as companies continued to compete aggressively for
top candidates in an increasingly tight management talent market.
The ExecuNet survey of 125 executive recruiters found 60 percent are confident or very confident
the executive employment market will improve during the next six months — up from 55 percent
the previous month.
"Based on the amount of pent-up demand in the market, predictions of strong executive-level job
growth through the first quarter of 2008 are well within reach," says ExecuNet president Mark
Anderson. "Given the current shortage of top talent, companies are well aware of the consequences
of putting their hiring plans on hold — and very few are willing to take that risk."

capital — and key financial services talent — from Wall Street to London, which has seen its
identity as a truly global financial center continuing to expand in recent years.
Now along comes a report that suggests the United States will maintain its position as the world's
leading country for nurturing and developing talent over the next five years, but face big
competition from the United Kingdom and China in the recruitment of leadership talent.
"Until now, companies may have sensed which countries attracted and developed talent most
effectively, but objective data to support their impressions was simply unavailable," says Kevin
Kelly, CEO of Heidrick & Struggles, which released the findings of its Global Talent Index survey in
cooperation with the Economist Intelligence Unit. "If talent is the oil of our future," Kelly contends,
"we need to pinpoint the hot spots, identify the reserves, and know how fast the pipelines can get
up and running."
Overall, the survey confirms that talent follows where money leads. After the United States and the
United Kingdom, the next best countries for attracting and developing talent are the relatively
small but open economies of Canada, the Netherlands and Sweden. Its findings also suggest that
Russia and Brazil simply won't be able to match the talent attraction of employment in other
emerging economies, such as those of India and China.
The Index measures each country's potential for producing talent and the conditions necessary to
realize this potential. Seven separate measures were used in assessing each country:
demographics, quality of compulsory education systems, quality of universities and business
schools, quality of the environment to nurture talent, mobility and relative openness of the labor
market, trends in foreign direct investment and proclivity to attract talent.

Understanding Marketing Yourself: Part 1: Survey the Landscape …
As with any product, good marketing begins with knowing the marketplace. It makes no
sense to go blindly into the fold without understanding trends and focus. Many a good
product has come up short because of a lack of perspective on what the market was
buying. While the job search landscape is littered with stories of those who attempted to
“sell ice to Alaskans” or “beachfront property to Kansans”, there are many other stories of
those who made the sales process a snap simply because they understood market
preferences and demands. It’s nice to do hardcopy research and online info gathering but
there are three much better ways. Talk to your preferred industry, talk to your preferred
industry, and then talk some more to your preferred industry until you have a strong sense
