Understanding Marketing Yourself: Part 1: Survey the Landscape …
As with any product, good marketing begins with knowing the marketplace. It makes no
sense to go blindly into the fold without understanding trends and focus. Many a good
product has come up short because of a lack of perspective on what the market was
buying. While the job search landscape is littered with stories of those who attempted to
“sell ice to Alaskans” or “beachfront property to Kansans”, there are many other stories of
those who made the sales process a snap simply because they understood market
preferences and demands. It’s nice to do hardcopy research and online info gathering but
there are three much better ways. Talk to your preferred industry, talk to your preferred
industry, and then talk some more to your preferred industry until you have a strong sense
