around the world.
That necessitates another change in employers' tactics: The process of interviewing and preparing
an offer that routinely used to take two months is being condensed. To stay ahead of competing
offers, the more proactive employers are scheduling fewer rounds of interviews or setting up multiple
meetings on a single day, and coming to decisions quickly.
"There are only so many candidates, and if you stall, you may lose them," says Mr. Best of Taxi. He
himself ended up at the boutique agency because a larger agency took three months to extend him
an offer. "We'll sometimes interview a candidate in the morning and, if it's the right person, have an
offer letter sent to them that afternoon," he says.
Planning ahead
Indeed, to be ready to act fast, recruiters say that companies are asking them to plan much further
ahead. Recruiters have always had to be aware of the talent in particular industries, but now they are
developing external pools of potential hires and keeping dossiers on them.
Ms. Tromba, for instance, has a current assignment to locate someone for an executive-level position
without a specific future job description. "The client doesn't know exactly where the person will be
deployed," she says. "It's a classic example of hiring ahead of need."

No Easy Job
By MATT PHILLIPS
Weekly jobless claims data shot up and a key inflation gauge stayed stubbornly high, painting a not-
so-pretty picture for a central bank that has been slashing interest rates to help heal the economy.
Unemployment numbers and personal consumption figures both arrived in a morning deluge of data,
a day after the Federal Reserve cut a half percentage point off its federal-funds rate. The number
of U.S. workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits jumped by a
seasonally adjusted 69,000 last week to 375,000, the Labor Department said. The consensus

2
forecast among economists asked by Dow Jones Newswires was for a jump of just 17,000. Some
played down the size of the uptick in claims, citing the presence of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday
as a potential pitfall for statisticians. But in light of pervasive recession fears -- aggravated by
yesterday's report showing the economy braked sharply in the fourth quarter -- others found today's
jobless numbers more worrisome. "If claims were to stay at this higher level for several weeks, it
would be a significant indicator of sharply deteriorating economic conditions," wrote Bear Stearns
economists in a research note. Economy watchers will get another snapshot of the employment
market -- and by extension the economy as a whole -- in January's payrolls report, due out at 8:30
a.m. EST tomorrow. Expectations call for the unemployment rate to tick down to 4.9%, from 5.0% in
December, amid the creation of 75,000 new jobs this month. That would be an improvement over the
feeble 18,000-job increase reported for December.
Of course, stoking job creation and economic growth was at the heart of the Fed's rate decision
yesterday. But while worrying about recession, the Fed also has to watch out for price stability. Its
preferred metric for gauging inflation pressures is the core personal consumption expenditure price
index -- which strips out the costs of food and energy. This morning's report on that measure showed
that prices stayed stubbornly above the upper limits of the Fed's perceived comfort zone of 1% to
2%. Year-over-year it rose 2.2% in December, matching November's reading. In a research note,
RBS Greenwich Capital economist Stephen Stanley said: "I don't think that anyone would argue with
the proposition that the Fed has been distracted from its pursuit of low inflation by weaker growth and
financial market turmoil. The Fed is relying on slower economic activity to tamp down the inflation
brushfire, and that is a reasonable expectation, but Ranger Bernanke has been emptying his can of
lighter fluid all over the forest in recent days by lowering the funds rate so aggressively."

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 70…)

Be Wary of The Passive Search Monster
When I first wrote the title above, I thought about looking for a replacement word for “Monster”
because of that company’s obvious place at the forefront of the internet job search marketplace, and
then I thought that for this particular message, it’s entirely appropriate even if it is an awesomely bad
pun. There’s been a great rush to extol the virtues of many of the newer social/professional
networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Naymz, Friendster, and the like; and there’s no denying
that these are potentially great tools when used in the proper context. Just like CRN, Monster,
Career Builder, and Yahoo Hotjobs to name a few, it can be very tempting to sit back and depend on
these electronic processes to “find” a job for you. That’s called passive search and it’s not nearly as
effective as personal networking. The numbers still bear this out. The latest stats still indicate the
more than 60% of the time, your new position will be found this way. Electronic processes including
e-networking represent a little over 20% of the job search success pie. So here’s a thought: using
them both together can put you solidly into the 80% success category and that’s a good bet any day!
