Manypeoplemaynotrealizethatwhentheyturnonthetelevisionintheirhome,whattheyseeasaconstantflowofimagesisactuallyflickering.Althoughwe donotseethisconsciously,therepetitivepatternofflickeringimagescreatesastatethatissimilartohypnosisinthetelevisionviewer.Studiesbyresearcher HerbertKrugmanhaveshownthatwithin30secondsoftelevisionviewing,brainwavesswitchfrompredominantlybetawaves,indicatingalertandconscious attention,topredominantlyalphawaves,indicatinganunfocused,receptivelackofattention.Thebrain'slefthemisphere,whichprocessesinformation logicallyandanalytically,tunesoutwhilethepersoniswatchingTV,whiletherighthemisphereofthebrain,whichprocessesinformationemotionallyand noncritically,isallowedtofunctionwithouthindrance.Duetothisphenomenon,televisiontransmitsinformation,whichisnotactivelythoughtaboutatthe timeofexposure,muchlikehypnosis.Whenviewingtelevision,wedonotconsciouslyrationalizetheinformationresonatingwithinourunconsciousdepthsat thetimeoftransmissionandtheviewerbecomesmoreopenandsuggestible. Becauseofthepassive,hypnosislikeviewingoftelevisionaswellasitspredominanceinthehomesofnearlyallAmericans,thetelevisionisoneofthemost powerfultoolsusedtoday.Asof2009,sixcompaniescontrolledallofthemajormediaoutletsintheUnitedStates.Thatisaverysmallnumberofpeople controllingalloftheinformationthatstreamsintomillionsofhomesacrossAmericaeachdaythroughtheirtelevisionsets.Inrecentyears,anumberof investigationsandexposeshaverevealedthatthesegiants'silenceindependentvoicesandinvestigations,discouragejournalismthatinterfereswiththe agendasofspecialinterests,andeliminatediversityintheinformationtheyprovide.Becauseofthecontrolthatthesecompanieshaveovertheinformationthat mostAmericansreceiveonadailybasis,thesecriticismsandrevelationsareneverknownbymostoftheAmericanpublic. Thesemediagiantsworkhandandglovewiththefederalgovernmentaswellasmanymultinationalcorporationstodisseminatecarefullyplannedmessages. Throughthetelevisionandotherformsofmedia,theytellyouwhattothinkabout,whattoworryabout,whattosmileabout,andwhattobescaredof.They havesoldthepublicontheideaofthenewscasterbeinganextensionofthefamily,atrustedfigurewhoencouragestheacceptanceoftheinformationbeing presentedastrueandaccurate.In2008,thepentagonspentmorethan$2billioncompensatingmajormediaoutletsfordisseminatingpublicrelations messages.Thesemessagesaredeliveredtothetelevisionviewerasnewsproducedbythetelevisionstation,notaspaidandproducedbythepentagon.In thesameyear,pharmaceuticalcompaniespaidtelevisionoutletsmorethan$4billionforadvertising,whichincludedVideoNewsReleases(VNR),specially tailoredpiecesthatappearwithinthenightlynewsdisguisedasresearchedandreportedbythelocalstations.Nootherindustrializednationintheworld allowsdrugadsontelevisionletalonethesecleverlydisguisedVNRshiddenwithinthenews. Andyetwhileallthishasbeenhappeningbehindthescenes,theAmericanpublichasbeendupedintostakingalltheirtrustinselectmajormediaoutletsas theyexpressbrandloyaltyintelevisionstations,newspapers,andmagazines.Manypeoplehavebeentrickedintobelievingthatthemainstreammediareports onlyobjectivenewswhileanyinformationdeliveredfromoutsidethemainstreamistoalwaysbequestioned.Somehowthepublichasboughtintotheidea thattheTVwouldn'tlietothem.Manypeoplewillnotpayanyregardtoinformationthatisnotcoveredbythemajormediaiftheydidnothearaboutiton thenightlynewsthentheysimplydon'tcare.Thisisthemindsetthatthemajormediamogulswantustohave,aswearewillfullyignorantandobedienttotheir everydirection.Ourunanalyticalandloyalviewershipisintheirbestinterest.
