The Solar Flyer

A new airplane using the sun for power took off in Hawaii. This airplane was called the Pathfinder. It had
eight tiny electric engines. It was able to fly up to more than 80 thousand feet.
The goal was to prove that a plane could fly for a long time. The plane could do many of the same things as a
satellite. This plane, however, would fly lower.
The plane is very light, but it still needs a lot of power to keep flying. The solar cell which collects the sun=s
energy must be very light. This also means it must work well. There are thousands of solar cells on the wings of
this airplane. These cells change the sun's energy to electricity. The cells generate about 10,000 watts.
Standard fan jets power this plane. There would be two planes, so they wouldn't have to stay in the air for
months at a time. The planes would send and receive phone calls over a city. The pilots on board would take off
and go up to the place where they would fly around in circles. A second plane comes up and takes over before
the first plane can leave. It is said that about 1,000 planes could fill the telecommunications needs for three
hundred cities around the world. Several groups of helium balloons, about two hundred fifty over every major
city, could also send signals from the sky. This may be difficult to imagine, but money would be saved. Planes
and balloons would cost only a part of the fifty million dollars to send a satellite in the air.
